2 2 COASTAL CHATTER SEPTEMBER 2015 ACTIVITIES from Dottie Karika After a few much needed rainy days, we had a beautiful Sunday for our "Hero's & the Pool" on Aug. 9th at 6PM. Over 50 members & guests enjoyed 2 six foot delicious hero's of ham, turkey & roast beef with tomatoes & lettuce accompanied by home made macaroni salad, coleslaw and baked beans along with potato chips. Our hosts were Fleur & Chuck Mc Knight, Dottie & Jim Karika and Marilyn Smith. The dessert was a farewell cake for Elaine & Wayne Rodney plus cookies. Elaine & Wayne sold their house on Clubhouse Circle and moved to Belevedere while their son & daughter-in-law put an addition on their house for them. They lived in Coastal many years and will be missed by all the friends they have made here. Fortunately, they won't be too far away and promised to stop back from time to time. Thanks to the guests & our faithful 50/50, we actually made a few dollars on the meal. Thanks to all who helped with the set-up & clean-up, especially Marilyn Micek & Bob Rossi. Our annual "Ice Cream Social" will be held on Thursday, Aug. 3PM at the clubhouse & the pool. Cost is $2.00 per person and $2.50 per guest. Thanks to Jane & Tom Wright for once again chairing this event. They have taken care of it since it started at least 5 years ago. The rest of their committee are Linda Henry & Sharon Simpson. Come & enjoy great ice cream sundaes and or Root Beer floats. Sounds yummy!! With September around the corner, our monthly breakfasts will begin again. The "A" Team will host the first one on Saturday, Sept. 8AM. Come & enjoy all the goodies they provide for a healthy & delicious breakfast. The price is still the same $2.00 and even though prices have increased greatly for the various items, the guys are still able to keep the same price all these years. That's over 20 years!! Hopefully, we will have our annual "Shrimperoo" in September also. Unfortunately the price of shrimp has gotten very expensive and to try and keep the price at $5.00 per person & $7.00 for guests will depend on the cost. If we can't, the hosts will get together and decide what other fare we will have. A flyer will be out with all the particulars. Hope you all enjoyed this wonderful summer, no hurricanes, thank God, and now that school is open there's a lot more traffic on 17, so please drive carefully! We also had a lot of new people move into Coastal in the past couple of months. let's show them what a friendly community we are!! God bless, Dottie

4 4 Ladies Lunch & Movie Bunch by Fleur McKnight On our usual second Thursday, Aug. 13th, appropriately enough, 13 ladies met for lunch at Fox & Hound next to Mayfaire theater. Definitely a sports bar with silent TVs all around, large dining area separated from the bar area to the front and pool tables in the back with no distraction from either area during our lunch. Also with a large, covered, outdoor patio seating area. I'd like to give a special "thumbs up" as we've not been there for a while after some difficulties in the past. Having had a nice lunch experience recently with others, I decided to give it another try much to our pleasure. They accepted our group graciously, the lunch menu was varied and reasonable, service was excellent with smiles and good food, the bills handled well. Both the manager and chef came out to be sure all was well. The location is perfect and we are sure to return soon. Attention bowling group! Now to the movies. Our usual two "adventure ladies" didn't disappoint and attended "Fantastic Four", which I would label as a "Sci-fi/Super Hero Adventure" after listening to them and reading reviews. Four young outsiders teleport to an alternative universe which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Starring Miles Teller as "Mr. Fantastic", able to bend his body into impossible shapes; Michael B. Jordan as "Johnny Storm", aka as The Human Torch; Kate Mara as Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, aka rock monster, "The Thing". Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. Both said it was just wonderful, no matter that it got an unfavorable review in the local paper comparing this sequel to the original. They liked that it didn't have "blood and guts" but more of a real story. The rest of us went to see "Riki and the Flash", starring three time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, who proves once again that she can transform herself into just about any character you want and very believably so. Riki is an aging, down-on-her-luck singer/ guitarist/songwriter in Southern California, having left her family in Indianapolis decades before to follow her dreams. Now as a grocery clerk in the day and barroom rocker at night with her band, The Flash, and keeping her bandmate and sometimes lover, Greg (Rick Springfield), at arms length, her laidback life rolls one day into another until a phone call from her ex-husband, Pete (Kevin Kline), about a crisis with their adult daughter (played by Streep s real life daughter, Mamie Gummer) and Riki decides to return to try to help, face the music and set things right with her loved ones. Not so easy. Two grown sons, an upcoming wedding as well as Pete's wife of many years (Audra McDonald) add to the still raw wounds of all. Good music all through and a wonderful, uplifting musical ending but with some sad undertones when thinking about "tomorrow". They all will continue on following the paths laid and you know, as all families, that those paths won't be easy. As one lady summed it up "Wonderful music, laugh-out-loud moments and very sad." Our next movie day will be Sept. 10th. Can you believe Summer's over?!! Mark your calendars and call me. Your "Movie Lady", Fleur
5 5 Our Friend Lauretta Not being able to be there to pay our respects to our friend, we wish to voice a few words of our feelings and sadness of losing a really wonderful lady. Knowing Lauretta as we did, we know she fought through her illness with courage, strength, and the greatest will to live than many. There is not much that hasn t already been said about her. What we will always remember is that OH MY GOD whenever she got excited or needed to make a point about something, her laughter resonating over conversations that others were having. Her passion for everything she did was intense and contagious including her love of cooking, painting, dancing, singing. Her craft abilities, and especially her love/hate relationship with Friday morning bowling. She was always ready to say I m in and let s do it!! She was grateful for everything and anything that came her way. If anyone lived life to the fullest and if anyone lived a life that mattered, it was Lauretta. She had such love and joy in her heart and if you were lucky enough to be her friend, you were truly blessed. One special Lady and we will miss her dearly. Gary and Pat Struck SUNSHINE CLUB by Dottie Karika Please keep in your thoughts Pat Brady, Chuck Klempay, Linda Taylor, Josie Balderson and Chuck McKnight who are having health problems or operations. Due to the HIPA law we are not permitted to put details in the Chatter.
6 6 WATER AEROBICS NEWS For the last 8 1/2 years we have been fortunate at Coastal Plantation to have Brenda Pill-Gilchrist as our water aerobics instructor. During this time she combined exercises, laughter and even songs as part of her classes. Now it will be over. :( Our instructor is moving to Boone. We shall hang up our dumbbells and noodles till But we will not forget her, all we learned about exercise and the benefits to our bodies, and those happy times in the pool. As we come to the end, we wish Brenda and her husband, Jim happy days in retirement. Thank you Brenda! The Mermaids of the Pool ATTENTION Will the residents who have removed shale from the end of the driveway at 96 Cypress Circle, stop. You are removing personal property that we have paid for and now must buy again. 7 7 Sky Watch September Sky by Margaret Stenerson Summer is over as the autumnal equinox approaches on September 23 rd with 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. The mornings are cooler and superb for walking if you are ambulatory. The turtle nesting season ended on August 31 st and the State of North Carolina had a total of 1,124 nests and Topsail Island had a total of 66 nests, Some of those TI nests hatched early with over 100 little turtles making their way to the salt water. Only 1 in 1,000 of those baby turtles will survive to adulthood and that is why they are endangered. Lunar eclipse is at the end of this month in the middle of the night for all you night owls. 8 8 COASTAL CHATTER MANAGERS MEMO It seems like every once in a while here we are seeing a hint of fall weather (not enough but a hint)! As fall approaches two things to be mindful of; first we are getting into peak hurricane season so please pay attention to the weather alerts! We normally have plenty of time to prepare for these storms if we are paying attention. If you need more information regarding hurricane preparedness just stop by the office. Second; as the leaves and twigs start coming down please keep them separated for pick up. Small sticks and limbs don t go through the vacuum very well and can cause damage to the machine. As the summer starts to roll towards a close (kids are back in school so be watchful as you drive for the buses); I want to thank you all again for making Coastal Plantation the Community it is!!!!!!!! Timothy Weaver REMINDER for residents with pets: Please make sure to have your pets on a leash while outside. If you are having guests over that also have pets, please make sure their pets are on a leash while outside and they pick up after them. Thank you for keeping Coastal Plantation clean! WILDLIFE AND ANIMAL RESCUE Thank you everyone for your generous donations! You can continue dropping clean towels, tee shirts, old sheets and blankets to 96 Cypress Circle.
