2 2 COASTAL CHATTER ACTIVITIES f rom Dottie Karika In listing members who dressed up for the "Halloween Party", I overlooked mentioning our golfers, Wayne & Elaine Rodney. Sorry for the error! Our "Thanksgiving Dinner" was held on Sat., Nov. 22nd with 59 members & guests in attendance. The clubhouse was decorated beautifully, the food was fantastic & the desserts delicious. It was a treat to have our linen tablecloths on the tables and everyone enjoyed the evening. Many thanks to our hosts, Bea & Ted Acorn (who filled in for the Mc Knights who had a family emergency), Mina Alford, Dot & Jim Karika, Rick & Karen Marshall and Tony & Carol Peralta. Much appreciation to those who cooked the turkey, the dressing and gravy plus everyone who supplied the snacks, veggies, breads & desserts. We had a groaning board fit for a king! Next was our wonderful "Christmas Luncheon" at the Shell Island Resort on Monday, Dec. 8th. Everyone arrived dressed in their Sunday best and all looked terrific. Our thanks to Barbara Sheridan & Linda Taylor for all their efforts to make the day a memorable one. This was the third year they hosted the event at Shell Island and they signed up to do it again next year, making the VP's job easy. When you have a well oiled machine, you stick with it and Barbara & Linda work well for all of us to make sure we get the best. The food & dessert were great, the scenery wonderful and enjoying each others company made for a great time. A wonderful way to start the Christmas season! Our "Christmas Grab Bag Party" happened on Sunday, Dec. 5:30PM. Vice- President Rick Marshall ran the show with the help of President Mary Ellen Gaffney and her elves, Pat & Gary Struck. Thanks to Rosemary Krug who made the with & without punch and to all the bakers for all their cookies & other goodies. I heard it was a great party with lots of swapping, lots of candy and lots of bottles to share. Thanks to all who helped clean up after the party. I also noticed that the boxes for the clothing for the school children were filled to the brim. It's great to see the outpouring of charity to those less fortunate and we have many in our local schools. Thank you for your generosity! January will begin our monthly breakfasts, date unknown at this time. Hopefully the :"B" team will have enough help to host the breakfast. Our January event will be hosted by Ann Lee & Bob Johnston, Carol & Tony Peralta and their committee. A flyer will be out with all the particulars, so be on the lookout. It's incredible how fast time flies when you get older. Here we are at the turn of a new year, When you're young time drags and you're always looking forward to being another year older or maybe 16, 18, 21 or 25. Then you turn around and you're 50, 65, 75 or like my mother 96 in January. My prayer for each of you is a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, peaceful and joyous New Year. Til next year! Dottie

3 3 BOWLING: This past month, the women took top honors away from the men, led by two of last years rookies, Jean Stoudenmire and Lil Duffus. Jean bowled a strong 211 game and Lil a 202. Needless to say they are on cloud nine! Jim K bowled two 197 games for a 576 series, Gary Struck a 193 followed by Charlie Brady's 188 game and 513 series in a gallant try for the men! After a slow start, Rosemary Krug bowled five strikes in a row for a 181 game. Pat Struck came next with a 178. Dot Karika, trying hard to hold onto high average for the women, bowled a 177. Steve Hildreth came next with a 174 followed by Fleur Mc Knight's 171. Other good games included Bob Johnston 169, Barbara Sheridan 166, Rich Jermott 164, Bernie Zikos 163 and Chuck McKnight's 161. Let's not forgot the many hugs that came with those scores!!! Charlie, Pat, Dottie & I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! ATTENTION POOL/BILLIARDS ENTHUSIASTS: On the calendar you will see Billiards listed on Mondays at 11am. This is not at the clubhouse but locally. Please contact Jack Doherty or Jens Jensen for more information. ALL ARE WELCOME! Men, Women, Beginners to Experienced! (Lunch is also available on the premises.) ANIMAL RESCUE Donations: Animal Rescue and Wildlife Groups are in need of CLEAN used towels, bedding, pet beds, and tee shirts. Items can be dropped off at 96 Cypress Circle in and will be distributed to needy organizations in Pender and New Hanover counties. Thank you for your needed donations! Ann Besch

5 5 Sky Watch January Sky by Margaret Stenerson 2015! The year of the total solar eclipse in March! It will get dark that day! Did anyone else see the six real, live ducks in our pond on Sunday morning, December 7 th???? I heard that the decoys were there to attract other ducks. However, ducks can fly and they are gone. The early morning sky (before dawn) has the Big Dipper directly overhead. Sometimes it is difficult to see, especially during the summer. Remember as we move through the New Year the days are actually getting longer (a few more minutes of sunshine each and every day!) Rejoice, spring is on its way, really. Phases of the Moon January 1 st : Waxing Gibbous Moon (getting larger toward the Full Moon) January 4 tth: Full Moon (looks like a Full Moon from the 2nd to the 6th) visible all night January 8 th : Waning Gibbous Moon (getting smaller toward the last quarter moon ) January 13 th : Last Quarter Moon (looks like half a moon) and visible in the morning sky January16th: Waning Crescent visible in the morning sky January 20 th : New Moon - not visible from earth January 23 rd : Waxing Crescent Moon (getting larger toward first quarter moon in the afternoon) January 26 th : First Quarter Moon (looks like a half moon) and visible in the afternoon. January 30 th : Waxing Gibbous Moon (getting larger toward the Full Moon) Planets visible: Venus near the moon early in January; Jupiter is very bright before dawn; Moon and Jupiter in conjunction on January 21 st ; Saturn before dawn on the 16 th ; Venus low in the sky of the 21 st. Constellations visible: Northern Cross upright in the western sky, and Sirius in the Big Dog is the brightest star we can see in the northern Hemisphere. Questions: stenersonmargaret@yahoo.com
