2 MA Y 2017 ACTIVITIES by Dottie Karika We had a very unique "Meet Your Neighbor Pasta Dinner" Saturday, April 8th. As the 60 members walked into the clubhouse they were asked to pick a number which told you the table to were to sit at. This was only the second time this was done in the 22 years I've been here and it went pretty well with a minimum of grumbling! Each table was also asked to answer a question with some very interesting comments, all in all, it proved to be fun! Our thanks go to Linda Burkhart, Pat Byron, Gladys Joyce, Susan & Rudy Hrubala, Arlene Kutz, Carol & Jim Piersa and Nancy Warren for hosting the event. A special thanks to Carol & Jim Piersa, new residents who jumped right in volunteering. The menu was delicious with snacks, salad, pasta w/marinara sauce, meatballs & sausage, garlic bread and cake & ice cream for dessert! Could you ask for anything more for $6.00 plus sitting with different people made for a lot of conversation and a getting to know you chance! It might be a good thing to do once or twice a year! Saturday, April 22 at 3 PM was the date for our annual "JAC Bowling Tournament" held at Beach Bowl in Ogden. We had 22 bowlers sign up and 11 just for the dinner. It was a fun time with a lot of laughing and hugging going on! The teams were made up with the lower average bowler or no average bowling first & then the higher average bowler attempting to pick up the pins left by the first ball thrown. It sounds like it should be easy but that's not always the case! Bea & Ted Acorn and Dottie & Jim Karika hosted the event with the help of Carol Peralta who went to the clubhouse early. Our big winners were Gladys & Ted Acorn with games of 155,155, series. Gladys really helped the cause with 11 strikes but Ted was on his game as he made many spares! 2nd place went to Mary Ellen Gaffney & Charlie Brady with 129, 141, series, 3rd place to Linda Vergallito (who hadn't bowled in 25 yrs. but looked like she bowled yesterday) & Rosemary Krug with 142, 163, series. Holding up the bottom was Rita La Calamita & Beryl Bloch with games of 121, 89, 100 for a 318 series. The four teams received prizes, Ist place - ribbons, wine glasses & bottles of wine, 2nd - ribbons, wine glasses filled with candy, 3rd - ribbons, wine glasses filled with candy and last place - honorable mention ribbons, wine bottle magnets & candy. Dinner consisted of salad, pizza, drinks, cookies & ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious! Some have suggested that we have the tournament twice a year, considering all the fun we had, we may think about it. Many thanks to all who participated. Next week, Saturday, April 29th at 7:00 PM, Chip Vergallito will once again have a free evening of music and "dancing" at the clubhouse. It was such a rousing success last time with over 70 members attending, he decided to do it again! This time it will be music from the 60's with Chip on the drums. It's a BYOB plus snacks to share or for yourself. A sharing table will be set up & iced tea & lemonade will be available. Hope to see a good crowd there! Speaking of dancing, if you haven't been to the clubhouse, there have been a few changes. Thanks to Blair Kelly, Gary Struck (who laid the floor in one day) with (continued on next page)

3 the help of Rich Jemmott, Chip Vergallito (who painted the walls) and Jim Karika, we have a dance floor in the area where a lot of the library bookcases were. The room looks beautiful with a new floor & painted walls, the material provided by Jensen's. The majority of the library bookcases are on the porch and thanks to Gladys Joyce, Sylvia Mangan, Pat Struck, Mae Curfman and Dottie Karika for removing the books or putting them back. It was a big job but a job well done! With the unfortunate loss of our beautiful mural in the clubhouse, we have to thank Marie Kenyon (for painting the wall) and Marilyn Smith for hanging a gallery where the mural was. The pictures are diversified and tastefully hung in the space and if they are up to it, they may start on a new mural in the fall. The mural was a great background for pictures and the new one should be just as beautiful! May 6th at 8 AM Saturday is the date for the "B" Team breakfast. Price is the same $3.00 and the winners of the 50/50 which is usually 2 sometimes 3 prizes sends members home with a surplus and a smile on their faces! "B" Team always has specialties so come and see what their surprise will be this time! "Our Annual Pool Opening Party" sponsored by the officers & board of JAC will be held over the Memorial Day weekend. This is a freebie event sponsored by Jensen's Inc. and is always a great day honoring our military members. Flyers will be out as the time approaches. Time certainly has a way of flying when you're enjoying all the good stuff that goes on in Coastal. It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating New Year's Day and here we are close to May. Soon the pool will be open and we'll be enjoying the camaraderie at the pool. We've had a taste of some hot days recently and it sure feels good! Til next time, God Bless & God Bless America! Love Dottie WINE ON WEDNESDAY at the Pool at 4 o clock is starting on May 17th! BYOB and snacks. See you there! Linda

4 BOWLING by Jim Karika It took 2 months to break the 200 game drought. Beryl Bloch ended it by bowling a 201 & 511 series! Two weeks later, Ted Acorn had a 232 game with a 519 series & Dot Karika bowled a 206 game with a 541 series. The following week, to save face, I had a 226 and 604 series. With one week remaining of winter bowling, we seem to be getting our second wind! Rosemary Krug tried to keep it going with games of 186 & 187. Ted Acorn came back with a 184 game. This was before he teamed up with Gladys Joyce to win the team bowling on Saturday afternoon. I understand Ted didn't get to bowl much as Gladys had 11 strikes for the 3 games!! Way to go, Gladys, you showed us what a Southern Gal can do!! Getting back to Friday bowling, Rich Jemmott bowled a 183 edging out Bob Johnston's 181 game. Mina Alford followed with a 179 and Pete Schnauder with a 176. Starting in May, Charlie Brady will handle the summer bowling. With no averages kept, it's a good time to try bowling. We bowl Friday mornings at Beach Bowl in Ogden. You only pay $6.00 for 3 games and no charge if you don't bowl. Let Charlie know if you're bowling - practice begins at 9:45 AM. Have a great summer - Jim SUNSHINE CLUB by Dottie Thanks, Dottie Please keep in your thoughts & prayers, Pat Brady, Mickey & Syble Spillane, Karen & Rick Marshall, Joann Murphy, Sandy Powell and Tina Landis. Unfortunately, we also lost a resident, Robert Dunlop of Clubhouse Circle, who passed last week. Please contact is anyone is hospitalized or very sick, I would appreciate it. 5 5 Ladies Lunch & Movie Bunch On our regular second Thursday, April 13th, fifteen ladies met for lunch at Ruby Tuesdays, Mayfaire, at our usual set of tables with yummy biscuits and crispy salads readily made available by a good wait staff. Two movies were attended there with more than usual other patrons as it was Spring break week. The theater with Beauty and the Beast was filled with many expectant young ones as well as our own "young at hearts". No one was disappointed as all were held spellbound by the "Tale as Old as Time" shown as never before by Disney, combining live actors, real settings and eye-popping computer animation. Starring Emma Watson (so grown up after the Harry Potter movies) and Dan Stevens, each having to do much prep work. Both took dance training and Emma had to learn to ride a horse -- running fast through a forest and jumping obstacles. Her signature yellow dress required 3,000 feet of thread and took more than 12,000 hours to create. Dan wore a Lycra muscle suit and stilts to make him tall. He required three or four people to help him become the beast each day. Our Action Ladies missed a good one here as it had everything from wolf-fighting, horseback riding, guns and sword fights, a villain, a comical inept sidekick, animated candelabra, wardrobe, tea pot with cup and saucer, who all managed to cause havoc with intruders along with the beautiful countryside and menacing woods. All agreed we wanted more -- even one more dance in the ballroom -- one more "happily ever after". The second movie there was "Going in Style", also tagged "The Retirement Robbers", a remake of the 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg. In this current outing, Morgan Freeman, 79, Alan Arkin, 83 and Michael Cain, 84, portray longtime friends bogged down by lost pensions, medical bills and pesky bank mortgages who come up with a crazy plan to rob the bank that misappropriated their pension funds. They didn't think it was a crime. They were only getting back the exact amount which was stolen from them in the first place. In an interview, Cain said, "It's a comedy that's unusually deep". And relatable, too, not only to the actors but to us "older folk" also, as the three actors are good friends and find extreme enjoyment in each others company which shows in their work. Caine and Freeman have worked together in six films and all have similar life experiences from all being newspaper delivery boys, struggling, cashstrapped aspiring actors to having been affected personally in one way or another by corporate greed. Our ladies thoroughly enjoyed it, over-the-top or not and recommended it for all. Continued on next page

6 Our fore-mentioned "Action Ladies" traveled over to AMC (new name for Carmike) to see "Logan", billed as an Action/Adventure Sci-Fi Fantasy, starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in this third and last Wolverine-based spin-off of the X-Men franchise. For fans of this series this was a "can't miss". The synopsis says an aging Logan is caring for the ailing Professor X in a hideout near the US/ Mexican border when their sheltered existence is ended by the arrival of a young mutant girl needing help to stay safe from the mutant hunters. Page one of the computer reviews had three 5-stars: "The Perfect send-off for Wolverine," "Amazing" and "Easily one of my favorite thus far, the best Marvel movie of the year. A story taken from the graphic novel of the Old Man Logan story that tells the struggle and life of Logan. Action and brutality as the way Wolverine should be." Our ladies review was that it was great; fast paced and exciting and they both enjoyed it. Our May movie date is second Thursday, the 11th, so please be in touch by Monday, May 8th if you plan to go. Your "Movie Lady", Fleur /famck6016@gamil.com *ATTENTION ALL* Thank you Pat Byron for taking calls for B-TEAM Breakfast. We now have a wonderful lady to call for B-TEAM breakfast. Please call Belle Jenkins at if you are going to attend B-TEAM breakfast. You MUST CALL her to attend. Thank you All, B-TEAM Bob Rossi THE REAL WORK by Wendell Berry It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go, we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings.

7 THANK YOU Charlie and I would like to extend a loving and grateful thank you to all our friends at Coastal for the cards, prayers and flowers I've received since my surgery. Words cannot express how grateful we feel to have so many caring friends. Thank you once again, Pat Brady THANK YOU Thanks to all my well wishers as I started my long walk on the Appalachian Trail first part of April. It ended up being a very short walk in the woods due to pneumonia. I am back home trying to regain the use of my lungs. Thanks to all your good thoughts and prayers. Cindy Klempay THANK YOU Thank you so much to all of you that donated for the Cancer Relay for Life. Bob and I like doing this and it does make a difference. Thank you, Marilyn & Bob

I know this has been a long process for some of you and we appreciate your understanding. During the month of May, we will be adding soil and seed to the areas that require further attention. We will also be assessing lots and adding shrubs to fill voids on lot lines. The new plantings and seed require additional water so please be diligent in watering over the next 6 weeks. Most yards are looking great so if you are one of those that is unable to maintain your lot please talk to your neighbors and see if they know someone that can help. We have a great community and I know there are folks out there that are willing to help a neighbor in need. Keep in mind that the Annual Homesite Awards will be judged the end of June.
