2 COASTAL CHATTER ACTIVITIES f rom Dottie Karika The JAC "Halloween Party" was a rousing success! Held Sat., Nov. 1st as a pot luck supper, the food was wonderful, the decorations great & all those who dressed up were unbelievable! Many thanks to Marilyn Micek & Bob Rossi for their novel ideas along with their committee, Linda Henry, Rich Jemmott, Sharon Simpson, Barbara & Pete Schnauder, Marie & Phil Kenyon and Joan & Steve Hildreth. Check out the pictures in the clubhouse to see some of the costumes worn by Barbara Hunter, Barbara & Pete, Mary Ellen, Karen & Rick Marshall, Joan & Steve, Joan's sister Pam, Peggy & Tom Nattress, Jean Stoudenmire, Linda Henry, Marilyn & Bob and Rosemary Daidone. They all did themselves proud with their unique costumes! What's better than eating peanut butter eyeballs & pretzel stick fingernails! From all I heard it was a fun evening but isn't that what we expect when we have our various dinners. Thanks guys & dolls for a great time!! The next day we had a "Farewell Wine & Cheese, Cake & Coffee" for Jennie & Gene Paumgardhen. They left us to return to Pennsylvania on Nov. 7th. Many members came out to say goodbye to a very special couple. A few tears were shed when Gene spoke about how they enjoyed being part of our Coastal community. They are fortunate to be moving near their two daughters who were present along with their grandchildren. They will be missed! On Sat., Nov. 8th the "A" Team held their breakfast. Just a reminder, the teams buy the food for the breakfast based on the number of people who say they are coming, the last few breakfasts an average of 6 members don't show up causing food to be thrown out. The teams are working on finding someone to take over the "B" Team so we can continue to have monthly breakfasts. There is no breakfast in December. Hopefully, this will be worked out by January! Our "Thanksgiving Dinner" will be held Sat., Nov. 22 at 5:30 PM. We have 57 members & guests signed up for this special event. The committee consists of Mina Alford, Rick & Karen Marshall, Carol & Tony Peralta, Jim & Dottie Karika. Since the Chatter deadline was the 21st, info on the dinner will be in next months paper. At the JAC meeting Nov. 3rd, all the monthly dinners were filled by volunteers. December, of course, is the Christmas Party at Shell Island Resort on Wrightsville Beach. The date is Dec. 8th. All the other months are at the discretion of the committee as to type, date & time but fortunately members thankfully came forward. Since we have quite a few new people who have moved in, those running the events might ask them if they would like to help out & help them get their feet wet. Participating is a fast way to get to know your new neighbors and find new friends! Even though the world outside seems to be in such a turmoil, I thank God that our little corner of the world, Coastal Plantation, is free of conflicts. Driving into our community is like driving into a peaceful oasis and we have so much to be thankful for. On this Thanksgiving please remember all those who are so less fortunate than we are and ask for peace in our country & world. Thanksgiving blessing to all! Dottie
3 LADIES LUNCH & BUNCH by Fleur McKnight Early November was full of those crazy mixed up days that kept us all guessing. A list of 20 Interested ladies for the movies ended up with 11 actually going out on the 13th to take advantage of the last clear, mild day before the dreaded Artic Vortex engulfed us. Nine met at Atlantic Bread and two chose breakfast at I-Hop before taking in movies at Mayfaire. Two very disparate movies were attended, "The Judge" and "Interstellar", however both revolved around a similar vortex, so to speak: deep family relationships and Love. The two central characters in "The Judge" are the estranged middle son, (Robert Downey, Jr.) a big city lawyer returning to his small Indiana hometown for his mother's funeral and his father, the Judge, (Robert Duval) who later is on trial for hit and run murder. Enmeshed are two brothers still at home, a wife he's separated from, a young daughter, an old girlfriend in town, single with a grown daughter, myriad old friends and enemies of both father and son. Every single review I read said the performances of Downey and Duval were Oscar caliber with each and everyone else in the cast also outstanding. One critic put it best in my estimation: "A harsh judge with a grudge or two, cancer, murder, mental disabilities, resentment, remorse, love, power and more. Every character was deeply drawn, complex and believable." A must see. "Interstellar" which was seen in I-Max form and therefore excelled in outstanding special effects, concerned Cooper, (Matthew McConaughey) a former NASA test pilot and widower with two children who is now a farmer in a 21st century dust bowl; a permanent cloud of dust nearly blotting out the sun, crops and animals dying, civilization on Earth seems doomed. He and his son find a hidden underground outer space facility still operating and Cooper is convinced to head a crew to explore three planets for a possible new habitat for Earth's people. The relationship between the children, especially the daughter is very poignant. On 11/4, Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun Times wrote the following review that seems to align the best with what our ladies had to say: "Great performances, tingling our senses with masterful special effects, daring to be openly sentimental, asking gigantic questions about the meaning of Life and leaving us drained and grateful for the experience". His entire, lengthy review can be read on line by clicking on the movie on the movie listings page. There will be no organized movie outing in December as we're all so busy and/or traveling. However, I encourage you to check what's playing, set up your own outing when it's convenient for you and enjoy the movies! We'll all get back in touch for our first outing in the new year on the second Thursday, January 8, Happy Holidays, Take Care & God Bless. Fleur, your "Movie Lady"
4 BOWLING: Jim K topped all bowlers this past month with a series. He also had a 200 game for a 592 series. Charlie Brady keeps improving his average by bowling a 220 game & 576 series plus a 201 & 548 series. Ted Acorn has his average going in the right direction with a 206 & 188 games. Pat Brady got the women going with a good 199 game & a 490 series. Rosemary Krug didn't want to be left out, bowling a 197 & 486 series. Bea Acorn said she's not left-handed like Rosemary but her ball acts like it, so she came up with a nice 196 game. Gary Struck wanted the men heard from again bowling a 188 game followed by Chuck Mc Knight's 187 & 495 series. Dottie Karika got the women back on track with a 176 & a big 502 series. Lil Duffus beat out Bob Johnston's 172 game with a 173 game. Bowling certainly can equalizel the size of the bowlers!!! Other good games were bowled by Fleur Mc Knight 165, Bernie Zikos 162 & Pat Struck 160. Gee, what will next month bring! Quite a few new people have moved into Coastal & we're always looking for new bowlers to join us. Friday morning at 10 AM is start time & cost is $6 per bowler for 3 games. Come & join the fun!! Happy Bowling & Happy Thanksgiving! ATTENTION POOL/BILLIARDS ENTHUSIASTS: On the calendar you will see Billiards listed on Mondays at 11am. This is not at the clubhouse but locally. 6 6 SUNSHINE CLUB by Dottie Karika Please remember Gerry Crandall, Jim Smith, Barbara Hunter, Barbara Marryat, Mert Taylor & Don Worsford. All of them have had various health issues in the past month. The CUB SCOUTS will be in Coastal Plantation on December 15 for some old fashioned Christmas Caroling! If you would like for them to stop by your house, please put on your porch light! They should be starting about 6pm. Afterwards, you can join them at the Clubhouse for refreshments and a song or two! Please contact: Josie Balderson ( ) if you would like to donate your help with the snacks and refreshments. With Love At Christmas To a Special Friend Love Eggnog but hate all the calories? Try this recipe: What is a Friend? A friend is someone who understands and Someone you can trust. They will listen to you both night and day Without ever making a fuss. A friend will stand by your side when you are right and sometimes when you are wrong. They will hold you up when you are weak And provide support to make you strong. A friend s love is unconditional And unique in every way. And when you have problems A true friend will kneel with you and pray. Take 1/2 cup Egg Beaters 1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk 2 tablespoons sugar free vanilla pudding mix 2 ounces Bacardi Silver rum (less sugar & calories than other brands) Garnish with pumpkin pie spices and cinnamon Sip and enjoy! MSN Buzz 60 A friend once said to me that a friend is sent from God above And I believe this to be true. Because God has sent a friend to me and that friend to me is YOU! quarrygreetings.webs.com LEAVES ARE FALLING When you rake your piles of leaves to the curb for Wednesday s pickup, please make sure there are no rocks, mulch, sand, soil or sticks in the piles. The leaf vac can only pick up leaves. Anything else will damage the vac, which will result in breakdowns. Thank you!
7 Sky Watch December Sky by Margaret Stenerson The winter solstice occurs on Sunday, December 21 st. That means the sun shines directly on the Southern hemisphere because the earth is tilted as it rotates. Interestingly, on Dec. 21 st, the earth is at perigee to the sun, i.e. the earth is closest to the sun as it revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit. BUT, there is real cause for a celebration on December 22 nd!! Since Sunday is the shortest day of the year (least amount of daylight), every day after that is a little bit longer. So, as we move through Christmas and the New Year the days are actually getting longer (a few more minutes of sunshine each and every day!) Rejoice, spring is on its way! Phases of the Moon December 1 st : Waxing Gibbous Moon (getting larger toward the Full Moon) December 6 th : Full Moon (looks like a Full Moon from the 4 th to the 8 th ) visible all night December 11 th : Waning Gibbous Moon (getting smaller toward the last quarter moon ) December 14 th : Last Quarter Moon (looks like half a moon) and visible in the morning sky December 17 th : Waning Crescent visible in the morning sky December 21 st : New Moon - not visible from earth December 25 th : Waxing Crescent Moon December 28 th : First Quarter Moon Planets visible: Jupiter very bright in the night sky, Venus near horizon, and Mars and moon in SW on December 24th Constellations visible: the Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) is a bright cluster (very close to each other) The Great Square of Pegasus (with a tail) AND the Andromeda Galaxy to the left of the square Cassiopeia (the Queen) high in the sky
8 COASTAL CHATTER MANAGERS MEMO: Well I cannot believe that another year is almost behind us here at Coastal Plantation! It has been a year of losing friends but making new ones! We have been busy as have you the residents!!!!!! I hope I am half as active as the majority of you when I finally get to retire!!!! I would like to finish the year by saying a big THANK YOU to all the residents here at Coastal Plantation that make this an enjoyable place to work and a community we can all be proud of!!!!
