2 2 COASTAL CHATTER MAY 2016 ACTIVITIES by Dottie Karika We're very thankful for the warm weather and shedding the dark colors of winter. There have even been children in the pool but they came from the north so the cool temperatures of the water didn't bother them. They said they swam in 52 degrees and our pool was no problem. Ah youth, most of us wait until the pool is at least in the 80's before we put our little toe in!! I'm sure a lot of us will be swimming soon! April was a busy month at Coastal beginning with the "B" Team breakfast which had a great attendance and delicious blueberry pancakes and donuts as their extra. These guys lay awake at night thinking of new things to prepare and we certainly appreciate them!! Many thanks for doing such a great job!! Our "Annual Bowling Tournament" was held on Saturday, April 9th at Beach Bowl in Ogden. 22 Coastal bowlers participated and had a fun time. Our first place team was Mary Ellen Gaffney & Rosemary Krug who as a team had a 161 game and the high series. Second place went to Maddie Drew and Pete Schnauder, third place to Priscilla Dunphy and Barbara Sheridan who also had a 161 game but not as high a series. Holding up all the teams in last place was Gladys Joyce and Bea Acorn. They all received ribbons & gifts for their efforts. After the bowling, we all came back to the clubhouse for a delicious meal of heroes, macaroni salad, chips & cookies for dessert. Members of our cheering section also ate with us. Thanks to Bea & Ted Acorn and Dot & Jim Karika for running the show. Next came our 8th annual "International Nite" with 69 members & guests attending. Our Coastal cooks out did themselves with lots of ethnic food choices, plenty of appetizers and many delicious desserts. Many thanks to our hosts Jean & Wayne Beck, Pat Byron, Marie & Phil Kenyon, Mike McCaughey, Marilyn Smith, John Tamn and Jane & Tom Wright for a great job. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves from the sound of all the chatter in the room. We missed having the entertainment but it was a fun evening! Amazing was Pat & Mike Gillis who had friends visiting from the Philadelphia area whose names were also Pat & Mike, the Pat's have been friends for 51 years! The "A" breakfast team will host the May breakfast on Saturday, May 7th at 8AM. Still the best deal in town at $3.00 a person. Hope to see everyone there! Our "Pool Opening Party" funded by Jensen's will be held either Sunday or Monday of Memorial Day weekend. The affair is run by the club officers and board members. A flyer will be out with all the particulars in due time. There is usually a rain date just in case! Getting ready for the summer season and many special memories with vacations (although we're always on vacation at Coastal), graduations, etc. Enjoy everything you do with family, friends and people you meet. We have been blessed with a good life here in North Carolina and pray for good health & happiness for all of us!! God bless. Dottie
3 3 COASTAL CHATTER MAY 2016 BOWLING from Jim Karika Gladys Joyce became our newest bowler - welcome Gladys enjoy!! We started using 4 sets of alley's when everyone is able to bowl. Don't forget you only pay when you bowl! Jim K. has had a great April, bowling 223, series plus a 244 game and a 598 series. Beryl Bloch followed with a 192 and 213 games. Chuck Mc Knight came next with 207 and a 505 series. Gary Struck got hot bowling 185 & series. This being the 2nd highest series this year. Fleur Mc Knight said "if my husband can do it, I can to & she bowled a 197". Charlie Brady came next with a 181. Pat Struck couldn't catch her husband but bowled games along with Bob Johnston's 179. Rosemary Krug bowled a 178 and came back 2 weeks later with a 175 & 177, just missing a 500 series by 7 points. Ted Acorn & Bernie Zikos both bowled 177 games followed by Dot K's 176 & 500 series. Pete Schnauder joined the fun with a 168. Rudy Hrubala, using his Rosie ball, came up with a 162 games - way to go Rudy!! Only one more week to go for the winter bowling. Charlie Brady will be taking over for the summer with the same rules. Let him know if you are going to bowl so he can make up his lineup ahead of time. Have a great summer and remember, practice, practice, practice. Enjoy! Jim Karika REMINDERS FOR THE UPCOMING POOL SEASON Residents are required to be with their guests at the pool. Noodles need to be put away and umbrellas closed before leaving pool area. Please leave the side door by the pool unlocked at the Clubhouse. Easy access to the phone for 911 calls is needed. And, as always NO SMOKING is allowed. Thank you for you cooperation. Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause & reflect. Mark Twain
4 4 COASTAL CHATTER LADIES LUNCH & MOVIE BUNCH Our movie day on April 14th, dawned sunny and cool but warmed up quickly welcoming 25 ladies to Mayfaire for noon start times. With such early movies, six ladies decided on breakfast at I-Hop. Seventeen were seated at BRIXX Pizza across the street from the movie by 11:00 and the staff scrambled beautifully to get all out in an hour. Their excellent pizza, salads and wraps enjoyed by all. We welcomed back two ladies who decided they were missing all the fun, Kitty and Gladys. See you next month! Our two action/adventure ladies chose a later movie, so went on their own to Brixx a bit later. Their movie was "Demolition": a successful investment banker (Jake Gyllenhaal) struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Upon reflecting on the stagnant marriage he had, he becomes obsessed with dismantling malfunctioning machines around him, harassing the companies with complaint letters and consequently begins a relationship with a customer service representative. (Naomi Watts) Rather than a typical wild action movie that the ladies expected, it was a psychological demolition. They were disappointed (as well as two ladies they saw walking out) and said they wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Sorry Ladies. Several went to see "Hello, My Name is Doris" starring Sally Field as a sad, wistful, older woman alone after her mother's death, feeling life has passed her by. She dresses in quirky retro clothing, holds her lifetime possessions close, fantasizes about relationships with younger men and becomes obsessed with a young man at work. Everyone agrees Ms. Field is an exceptional actress and a movie reviewer said, "She carries this film on her shoulders and hands it to us for approval". One of our ladies said, "She is a genius and can tell a story with facial expressions alone". High praise indeed. The majority went to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2". Those of us who remembered the first one were eager to see what happens next. Briefly, Toula (Nia Vardolas) and Ian (John Corbett) have a daughter ready for college and wanting to go far away from her smothering Greek family. Toula's father, Windex handy, is researching his family tree convinced he's a direct descendant of Alexander the Great. Among papers he finds his wedding certificate that was never signed, meaning the parents of this large clan are not legally married. -- Wedding 2!! We all knew it would be a light, fun, laugh-out-loud experience and it didn't disappoint. The surprise was the added poignancy, attention to ethnic sensibilities and the tenderness of family closeness bringing tears to our eyes. Ladies, mark your calendars for the 2nd Thursday, May 12th, for the next outing. I will be away and Pat Byron has graciously volunteered to get you all off to lunch and movies but she'll need your help. You can get a heads-up by checking the Star News the Thurs. before, May 5th, for listings and brief story outlines. For more in depth, go on your computer to: fandango.com/wilmington_nc_movietimes. Click on the pic of the movie at the listing and it will take you to details, synopsis, etc. Check in with Pat at Breakfast on Sat. 7th or call her: by Mon., 9th. Thank you, thank you all for your cooperation. You make our movie days a wonderful time!! Fleur

If we are not at home, just hang your check onto the clip that is on our front door. If you see me at an activity, you can hand me your dues then too, however, if you are giving me cash, please have a note with your name on it attached to the cash, so I can properly record your payment. 8 8 COASTAL CHATTER MANAGER S MEMO Happy May to all!!!!!!!!!! I hope that everybody is ready to get out and take advantage of the nicer days that will be here this month; I know I am!!! First let me let everybody know who has been appointed to the communications committee (and yes I said appointed by Jensen s): your current members are; Bob Rossi, Gary Struck, Peter Schnauder, Jimmy Karika and Pat Byron (and no she is not the secretary but a fullfledged member). These residents have graciously accepted this position and I and Jensen s thanks them for doing this. If you have any issues regarding the community as a whole you can let them know or continue to bring them to my attention; I try and have an open door policy. Now that is out of the way, by now I hope you have heard the pool is being used. Chemical level is good and the water temperature is rising (it was 69 degrees today as I am writing this, that would be April 20 th ). I would hope it will be plenty warm in time for the Pool Opening Party the end of the month. Until next month; thank you all again for making this community a fun and enjoyable place to reside!!!!!!!!!! Timothy Weaver REMINDER for residents with pets: Please make sure to have your pets on a leash while outside. If you are having guests over that also have pets, please make sure their pets are on a leash while outside and they pick up after them. Thank you for keeping Coastal Plantation clean!
