2 2 COASTAL CHATTER SEPTEMBER 2018 ACTIVITIES by Dottie Karika Happy to be back at Coastal after 3 weeks in NY and sadly watching all the devastation happening to our beautiful area. So reminiscent of Hurricane Fran in 1996 and all the destruction. We are fortunate that Coastal fared pretty well except for 2 houses with considerable damage. Those who went to shelters were very appreciative of the help they received. One thing we know, you can't fool with Mother Nature & you have to be prepared! A lot to catch up on, the concert by Chip & Steve, August 25th, was well received and enjoyed. They did a great job and we are very fortunate they are so talented and willing to entertain us! This was the 10th year for the "Ice Cream Social" held on August 30th. Jane & Tom Wright have been hosting this event every year & it is always an enjoyable time! This year they were helped by Lucy & Bill O'Brien, Sharon Simpson & Mary Snead. Thanks for your dedication! Labor Day, Sept. 3rd brought our 2nd Annual "Hot Dog Day". All the different versions of hot dog toppings from around the country were represented. Linda Burkert & her committee did a wonderful job considering we had over 70 members and guests attend! The baked beans, coleslaw and extras were delicious and the dessert looked too beautiful to eat! Everyone had a great time! Looking forward to a special dinner on Saturday, Sept. 29th at 5:30PM. Lorraine D'Amato & Peggy Sue Hersom are hosting a "Post Florence Celebration of Life" with a pot-luck dinner. A flyer went out to the community to bring their favorite dish and reunite with neighbors after the experiences they had during and after Florence. What a thoughtful thing to do to lift the spirits of those who went through some hard times during the storm and after! Thanks so much and all who are helping you. Oct. 7th 8AM, it's hard to believe we are already going into October, the "A" Breakfast team will host the monthly breakfast. Jim Karika & his faithful team, Ted Acorn, Charlie Brady, Mike Gillis, Bill Hanks, Rich Koluch, Gary Struck & John Williams. who floats from the A & B Teams when needed, will be cooking & serving. Come out & enjoy more food then you could get anywhere for $3.00 plus the 50/50. There will be a sign-up sheet at the breakfast for anyone who would like to host an event from October to May. Please consider volunteering, November, December, March, May & June are filled, leaving October, January, February & April. There are plenty who will help anyone who signs up for these months. 4 4 COASTAL CHATTER SEPTEMBER 2018 Interested in learning new games? All of the games played at the clubhouse are open to everyone and if you never played the game before, we are always available to teach you as you play. Mah Jongg is played every Monday afternoon from 1-4. It is a great game that helps keep our minds thinking. It is not as hard as people think it is, and it is a great fun game. No money is lost while playing as we do not play for money. Rummycube is played every Monday night from 7-9 PM. This is a real easy game to learn and is fun to play. You can master the game in one evening, just come and join us. No need to just watch without playing, as you can pick up how to play the game in one sitting. Canasta is played every Thursday from 7-9. There are many different versions of Canasta, so come and learn the one that is played here in Coastal Plantation. Again, this can be taught in one sitting as everyone helps you. Dominoes is played the first 3 Friday nights of the month. Last week is Bingo which everyone knows how to play. Bingo is one of the few games that requires you to buy your bingo card. Dominoes is also known as Mexican Train. As with all of the other games you can easily learn it in one night. Bunco is played the first Wednesday of the month and if you can roll dice, you can play. That is all you really need to know in advance. It also requires you to bring $5.00 as there are cash prizes at the end. In addition, they usually go out to lunch after we play. You must call Mae and reserve your seat as there has to be a certain number of people per table. Pinochle is played every Tuesday afternoon from 1-4 and new players are always welcome. Again, they will teach or refresh your knowledge of the game. The only game that is NOT played in our clubhouse is Bowling. Every Friday starting at 9:45AM we meet at Beach Bowl on Market St. 9:45 to 10am is practice time and we start bowling at 10. YOU DO NOT NEED To be a good bowler!!! It is just a fun league and a wonderful way of making friends. This costs $6.00 per person for 3 games. As with all of the games, you play with different people each time. Teams, tables etc, are always mixed, you are never playing with only the same people at you table. It is the best way of meeting new people and making wonderful friends. Any questions, call me: Mim

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE Some information for new residents or anyone that does not know, we have some medical equipment available, at no charge to our residents. In the clubhouse there is clipboard hanging on the back wall, on the sunshine bulletin board. It contains the names and phone numbers of people that have items that you can have, or borrow. If you have any items that you would be willing to give or loan please add them to the list. Also make sure if you are only willing to loan the item to mention that. If you have any medical items that you do not want to store please call me at Charlie Brady
