CHAIRPERSON S REPORT INTRODUCTION The Stellenbosch University Cricket Club (Maties) experienced a highly successful / season with the First XI reaching the Final of the National Club Championships (Losing against the University of Pretoria); sharing the USSA title (with the University of Pretoria) and winning the Boland Premier League. In the Premier A League Maties only lost one match. Furthermore, the Victorian (Vics) side secured promotion to the Boland Premier A League by winning the Premier B League this was set as a very important goal for the / season and, as Chairman, I would like to congratulate the coaching staff and all the Vics players for their commitment in ensuring that this goal was achieved. Having two teams in the Boland Premier A League is crucially important to the Club. It ensures that a larger number of highly-talented players play cricket at the highest possible level. Here a special word of thanks and congratulations most go to our new Head Coach, Andrew Wylie, who had an immediate positive impact on the Club and its players and consequently on the performances of all our teams. Andrew was well supported by his assistant coach, Warren Kirsten and our other coach, Leon Roberts Leon did stirling work with the Second and Third elevens, respectively. Maties further also won the Boland Regional One Day Competition. Vics also won the Premier B / and Premier B Time Cricket competitions. The Maties II and III sides again performed well, with Maties II winning the Boland First Division. Leenert van Wyk represented South Africa at the Hong Kong Sixes and several Matie players again represented Boland at various levels throughout the season. The season furthermore saw the continuation of meetings with Steinhoff International to strengthen the company s long-term involvement with the Club. My thanks go to the company and its senior management including Mr Markus Jooste (CEO, Steinhoff International); Mr Danie van der Merwe (CEO, Steinhoff Africa) and messrs Derrik Matthew and Ajee Valentine for their interest and dayto-day support to the Club when and if required. Their professional support and assistance was highly appreciated. It has to be said that, in modern times, a Club like Maties could not perform consistantly and at such a high level without very active, generous and loyal support from a company like Steinhoff International. To them a say thank you!. My sincere appreciation goes to all my committee members, namely Messrs André Geldenhuys, André du Toit, Derek Mitchell, Oscar Nauhaus, Alec Brown, Henno Jordaan, John Loxton, Manrich Kotze and Nathan Roberts for their loyal support during the season.

A special word of thanks must go the Club s Head Coach, Andrew Wylie, the Assistant Coach, Warren Kirsten, as well as Leon Roberts who coached Maties II and III and our Fitness coach, Faan Fourie. Everyone contributed greatly to the success of the Club in the past season. A huge note of thanks also to the other personnel responsible for playing facilities, as well as Mr Kallie Daniels for his continued support and service to the Club. Lastly, but by all means least a very big thank you the cricket manager, Andre du Toit. I have had the privilege to work with Andre over a number of years and without his commitment; professionalism and love for the game and its players the Club will not be where it is today; so to Andre I say baie dankie! My thanks also go to many former players, other individuals and corporates like Gino s for their generosity in supporting the Club financially.

USSA TOERNOOI Pretoria -9 DECEMBER. Team Steinhoff International Maties USSA team members were: Lenert Van Wyk Ompile Ramela Mark van Heerden Dewald Botha Uwe Birkenstock (Vice Captain) Wikus van Vuuren Henno Jordaan (Captain) Derek Mitchell Viljee Geldenhuis Nathan Roberts James Groom Jean Marias Coach: Andrew Wylie Manager: Warren Kirsten Fitness trainer: Faan Fourie. Pre USSA Preparation Due to the time of the year we were fortunate to be able to use club form in the league and amateur form as the basis for our selections. The team then embarked on the first of many changes the new coach Andrew Wylie implemented, a team bonding trip up the west coast. The two days away were spent doing team bonding exercises and jelling the club and provincial players into a unit. Fitness on the beach and strategy sessions at night started the ball rolling for a successful USSA tournament. Practice facilities were arranged at St Albans College after the flight up to Pretoria were the boys were able to stretch there legs and have a light net before the tournament began in earnest the next day.. Transport We flew early on the morning of the th of December from Cape Town International Airport to Lanceria. Our Budget rent a car was picked up at the airport and we made our start to Pretoria. The vehicles remained with us for the remainder of the tournament and were returned early on the morning of the th of December. 7

. Accommodation As TUKS were the hosts of the tournament and there hostels are not to be used by visiting teams we were encouraged to use Jacaranda Lodge, where the majority of the other Universities also stayed. The rooms were very small but clean and the food was appetizing.. Financial Report Expenditure: Accommodation: R. Transport R8 7. Dinner: R 87. Totaal: R87. Income: Club Sponsorship R. SU Subsidy R 7. USSA Subsidy R 8. Totaal: R87.. Sponsors Steinhoff International is the official sponsor of the team and was very proudly represented by the Maties team. Our thanks must go to them for the addition of our trainer and Physiotherapist Faan Fourie who added valuable knowledge through his specialty fields of Physiology and Physiotherapy. We as the players and management are well aware of the privilege. Thanks to André du Toit, Sidney van Heerden and Steinhoff. 7. Functions A Managers and captain s meeting was held at the HPC upon arrival. Here the day to day running of the tournament was explained and logistics were discussed. The final Dinner was Held at the Waterloo Country Club. At the function the USSA team was announced and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all that were involved in the event. 8. Results of the tournament Day Steinhoff Maties versus UCT In overcast conditions and on a wicket that we would have bowled first on the toss was lost by Henno Jordaan and we were duly sent into bat. After losing Wickus Van Vuuren early to an indifferent stroke, a beautifully constructed partnership between Henno and Lenert van Wyk was the difference between the sides at the end of the day. There partnership of in challenging conditions was a wonderful balance of attack and defense. Unfortunately on the last ball of the power play Henno Jordaan was dismissed. A flurry of wickets then followed his dismissal and a low risk partnership between Dewald Botha and Omphile Ramela righted the ship and allowed the scoreboard to tick over. There run partnership, laid the platform for the next two batsmen to come in and express themselves. Jean Marias brisk run a ball was built on by the destructive Derek Mitchell who s off balls allowed the maties to ff the last vers and end with a competitive. Some inaccurate bowling by our openers allowed UCT to rocket to 8 ff the first 8 overs. Matthew Newton then produced to beautiful away swingers that were well caught by Derek at nd slip. Sanity then returned to proceeding as Derek picked the next two wickets up to have UCT reeling at 9 for. A dangerous partnership was then nipped in the bud by man of 8

the match James Groom whose spell of. overs for 9 wrapped up not only the partnership but the match as a whole. When danger man SA Engelbrecht nicked off and was well caught by Jean Marias, UCT capitulated from for to all out! Maties win with a bonus point by 8 runs. Day Steinhoff Maties versus UJ The loss of another toss saw the Steinhoff Maties batsmen put in under challenging conditions. Although Henno was able to get us off to a good start, his wicket soon followed by Wickus saw maties in a precarious position at for. Uve and Lenert then began to piece a partnership together, Lenert s LBW with the partnership stating to blossom made way for a patient stand by Uve and Omphile. They produced the most profitable stand of the day of 8. Omphile s wicket ended the stand and paved the way for Dewald, whose innings of off balls, really added the impetus the innings was lacking. The loss of Uve shortly after passing stopped the momentum built in the overs that Dewald and Uve were together. No meaningful partnership from this point saw the maties boys end on 8 for 9. Matthew Newton s off 7 balls pushing the score over the mark. Although the bowlers stuck to there guns throughout the innings, the flattening out of the wicket made putting any real pressure on the batsmen an up hill battle. Good spells by James Groom and Matthew Newton kept the scoring rates down and at 7 for after overs we were well and truly in the contest. We just didn t seem to get the rub of the green as we had probably deserved and through good disciplined cricket we kept the opposition to 8 for after overs. A good innings by Richard Cameron put pay to our chances and even though we fought to the end our efforts saw us end, short with UJ 7 wickets down and with 7 balls to spare. A tough pill to swallow, but the boys will be up for tomorrow s clash against NMMU. Day Steinhoff Maties vs NMMU After a change of venue due to an underprepared wicket at High School Old Boys our match was moved to the TUKS B field, a field with a reputation for low scoring and tough conditions. We won the toss and sent the much vaunted NMMU batting line up in. A great opening spell of controlled swing bowling from Matthew Newton set the tone for the day. He had the Warriors pair of David White and Collin Ackerman in the Pavilion before the score reached double figures. Then the spell of the day was bowled by the occasional swing bowler Derek Mitchell who in helpful conditions was at times unplayable. His spell of 7 overs for 8 was inspirational and on a hot day in Pretoria a herculean effort. James Groom was his miserly self and it was left to him to rap up the tail. NMMU were bowled out for below par 98. We were aware that 79 was a wining score on the same ground the day before so positive intent was needed by the batsmen. Although we lost a wicket early the change in order promoting Jean Marias up the order proved its worth as he swung the momentum of the innings our way with a quick fire. With needed still Uve (*) joined Lenert (*) and they batted superbly, even the late introduction of Simon Harmer could not stop them as Maties cruised to a 7 wicket victory. More importantly this allowed us due to the magnitude of our win to end top of our pool and the easier semi final versus Pukke. 9

Day Semi Final: Steinhoff Maties vs Pukke On a worn day four wicket and with the pressure of it being a semi-final, Steinhoff Maties won the toss and elected to bat. A quite fire innings by Omphile Ramela got us off to a good start. He unfortunately got out and started a mini collapse which was rescued by Uve Birkenstock () and Dewald Botha () who in the context of the match put together a chanceless 8 run partnership which proved to be worth its weight in gold. As this was a difficult surface to bat on all the batsmen struggled at the beginning of their innings which saw the Steinhoff Maties innings close at for 7. We all knew that because this was a semi-final the team batting second would always be under pressure, unfortunately this message did not get to the Pukke dressing room as they raced to 8 for in the 9 th over. Thanks to a superb run a ball by Michael Lazenby. The introduction of the part-time spin of Omphile Ramela was a master stroke by Captain Henno Jordaan. The first ball of his over was him for a towering stick over cow corner, the second ball though was ankle high full toss which was hit straight down square legs throat where Derek Mitchell made no mistake with the catch. Even though his next four balls went for runs this single over changed all the momentum of the game. Viljee Geldenhuys then produced a wonderful spell of overs taking wickets for runs and ending with match figures of for in overs. A run out and a wicket from the other side taken by Derek Mitchell this time with his more orthodox off spin saw the Pukke innings in complete tatters. It was then left to Matthew Newton to pick up the final two wickets and end a remarkable come back by the Steinhoff Maties team who picked up the final wickets without conceding a run. Who would have though that at 8 for, overs later the Pukke team would have collapsed to all out. A memorable victory paved our way to the final. Stellenbosch University wins by runs. Day Final: Steinhoff Maties vs Tuks There was no play on the final day and we were therefore forced to share the trophy with Tuks The final place standings were:. Steinhoff Maties and Tuks.. NMMU and Pukke.. UWC and UCT. 7. UJ and UFS 8. A wonderful week s cricket by the Steinhoff Maties cricket team therefore ended with unfinished business. Our congratulations go to Uve Birkenstock, Lenert van Wyk and James

NASIONALE KLUBKAMPIOENSKAPPE Pretoria -9 April. Team Steinhoff International Maties Club Championships squad members were: Lenert Van Wyk Ompile Ramela Emile Kriek Dewald Botha Uwe Birkenstock Carl Raubenheimer Henno Jordaan (Captain) Faan Fourie Daniel Childs Nathan Roberts James Groom Jean Marias Keegan Petersen Coach: Andrew Wylie Manager: Warren Kirsten. Club Champs Preparation As the tournament was played at the end of the season for the first time, selection of the squad and the form or the players was easier to judge then for previous club champs. We were fortunate to have three weeks from the end of the season to the start of the week to prepare. The players therefore had the first week off over Easter to be with there families and loved ones before preparations began in earnest. Even though we had no fields to practice on due to our cricket fields turning into koshuis hockey fields, our preparations in the nets due to the unseasonal good weather ran smoothly. No stone was left unturned and due to our middle facilities not being available to us, a friendly against UWC was arranged for middle practice. Practice facilities were arranged at St Albans College after the flight up to Pretoria were the boys were able to stretch there legs and have a light net before the tournament began in earnest the next day. A big thank you must go to Craig Hoyer for making this possible.. Transport We flew early on the morning of the of April from Cape Town International Airport to O R Tambo on SAA. Our Tempest busses with trailers were picked up at the airport and

we made our start to Pretoria. The vehicles remained with us for the remainder of the tournament and were returned early on the morning of Sunday the 9th of April. We returned to Cape Town on SAA 7.. Accommodation As this was a Cricket South Africa sponsored event we had the luxury of staying at the Hatfield Manor Hotel. The hotel was centrally situated and the breakfasts were superb. It was a very pleasant stay enjoyed by all.. Financial Report All cost was paid by Cricket South Africa.. Sponsors Steinhoff International is the official sponsor of the team and was very proudly represented by the Maties team. We as the players and management are well aware of the privilege. Thanks to Andre, Sidney and Steinhoff. 7. Functions A Managers and captain s meeting was held at Supersport Park upon arrival. The batsmen in general struggled to come to terms with the nature of the sporty wickets but still managed to show grit and determination to graft through the difficult periods. The challenge of playing days in a row against some of the best sides in the country was a challenge the players enjoyed and they really worked brilliantly as a unit, where much of their success can be attributed to the wonderful Team Dynamic s and spirit they displayed especially when under pressure and at times under threat of defeat. The Captain Henno Jordaan must take a lot of credit for the way he marshaled his troops and maintained their belief throughout the week as he was a prime example of that never say die attitude the boys exuded. The Final against Tukkies was ultimately a bridge too far, and Maties were beaten by a better side on the day but still continued to show the fighting character throughout the game. Despite Omphile Ramela s (9) at the top of the order the middle overs so Maties lose too many wickets to the spin bowling of Tuks and could not capitalise on the early imitative and therefore ended a good runs short of where they should of. The Matie Bowlers struck early to have Tuks in trouble at / but the experience of le Clus (*) and Hewitt (88) saw them home to victory. As coach I am incredibly proud of the way the players conducted themselves during the challenging tour, but especially impressed with the way this UNIT has grown over the past season and the real Matie Character they have shown. Andrew Wylie 9. Behavior The behavior of each team member was exemplary at all times and they represented the University with honor and pride.
