1 November 8 th, 2012 No. 361 Karadoc Avenue, Irymple Victoria 3498 Phone: IMPORTANT DATES NOVEMBER Fri 9 th Yr 7 Multicultural Day Wed 14 th Irymple Under the Stars Mon 19 Thu 22 nd - Year 9 Surf Trip Thu 29th Year 9 Peer Mentoring Day (24 students only) Fri 30 th Irymple Movie Night (Henshil Oval) Principal s Report Facilities Work is progressing very well on replacing the roof throughout the school. This significant upgrade also includes new insulation and new evaporative air conditioners. Our school was one of only 50 schools in the State to be included in the Assisted Supplementary Maintenance and Minor Works Program. This has resulted in funding of $700,000 for these improvements. It is expected that all work will be completed by the start of the 2013 school year. Industrial Action The Australian Education Union has indicated to members at our school that there may be a half day stop work on Tuesday 27 th November. Parents will be notified on Friday 23 rd November of any disruptions to regular classes on this day. Report Writing Day College Council has designated Friday 7 th December as a Report Writing Day. No students will be required at school on this day. Garry Costello (Principal). Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013 The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses. In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will receive an annual payment of $ Year 7 students will receive a payment of $ The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment from Payment Option From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment: -Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank or -Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or -Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses. The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment directed to the school provides parents with extra flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses. Eligibility: To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:-be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and -be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004*or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent. *i.e the parent /guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card. 2 GRIP Leadership Conference On Tuesday 30 th October, 14 Year 9 students attended Leadership Training. They attended workshops on How to give a Motivational Speech, How Students can run successful events and Sports Captain Leadership. It was reflecting about being leaders with the right focus, on How to minimise conflict and create a positive culture and How to develop others. Congratulations to the following students who also attended this day long training session: Jordyn Ashenden, Catherine Baker, Madeline Barker, Abbie Dean, Sasha Dowdy, Abigail Holden, Tessa Kiel, Penny Konstandopoulos, Kaila McLean, Sheree Moore, Tanner Payne, Ria Snodgrass, Lauren Swift, and Tiana Sylvia. Callum Barnden, Jonathon Dowdy, Jayden Vassallo, Zac Gillard, Liam Wood, Ben Brinsmead and Jordan Bolitho. The boys played three preliminary rounds against Chaffey and Merbein. Irymple finished second on the table after going down to Chaffey in the last over of the first match. Irymple then played Coomealla in the preliminary final and with smart batting and bowling from Daniel Chapman the boys made it through to the final against Chaffey. Chaffey batted first in the final and finished with 6/99 after their allocated eight overs, with Nick Callipari and John Dowdy being the main destroyers with 2 wickets each. Irymple chased the total down in the fifth over with Daniel Chapman and Ben Brinsmead both retiring after making a quick fire 25. RESULTS Round 1 Irymple 4/129 defeated by Chaffey 3/138 Round 2 Irymple 2/114 defeated Merbein 5/82 Preliminary Final Irymple 3/111 defeated Coomealla HS 3/109 Final Irymple 3/116 (5 overs) defeated Chaffey 6/99 Leadership positions in Year 10 We are currently in the process of electing our peer mentors, House Captains and College Captains for Year 9 students this week will be delivering College Captain speeches to respective Year 7, 8 and 9 students and elections held the following week for College Captains and House Captains. Year 9/10 Boys Cricket Team Interschool Year 9/10 Girl s Cricket On Thursday 18 th October, the Year 9/10 ISC girl s cricket team attended the Interschool super 8 s 2

3 competition at Aero Ovals. The team went into the competition full of confidence after strong tryout sessions to select our best all round team. The first game saw ISC take on Red Cliffs SC; and after winning the toss elected to send the opposition into bat first. A strong bowling line up, accompanied with an all-round fielding effort saw ISC take 4 wickets and keep RCSC to 75 runs. The girls then backed up their bowling by belting 133 runs for 4 wickets, winning the game by 58 runs. In the second of two pool games, ISC faced 2012 contenders Chaffey. Again the girls won the toss and chose to bowl first. Chaffey were caught on the back foot, as the ISC girls powered away to take 7 wickets and restrict them to 61 runs. With a low run chase ahead, ISC took a while to get going early but came home strong to post 88 runs from their 8 overs, finishing the game 27 runs ahead to take out another win and head into the semi-final undefeated. The semi-final saw ISC face a surprising opponent and last years easy beats Trinity Lutheran College in the must win game. Lutheran elected to bowl first, which placed ISC into the unfamiliar territory of having to post an unbeatable score. The girls agreed to go with their strongest batting combinations, and it paid dividends as the team amassed a total of 149 runs (including 17 boundaries) for 4 wickets. A deflated TLC then attempted to reach the colossal score but didn t look like getting close, needing 100 runs from their final 3 overs. ISC went on to win the match by 61 runs. The ISC girls were ecstatic to make the Grand Final, however, knew their job was not over until they faced St. Josephs College, the only other undefeated side for the day. The ISC team had watched the SJC semi-final closely and knew the plan which had to be followed in order to claim glory. Again ISC were sent into bat and scored a competitive 104 runs for the loss of only 2 wickets. The task was to then restrict SJC every ball and limit their big hitter s influence on the game. With scores tied at the half way mark of the innings, some 3 sensational field coverage, a tight run out and some sensible bowling saw ISC get over the line by 14 runs in what was a nailbiting final over. The ISC Year 9/10 girls team will now travel to Melton on the 8 th November to compete in the LMR stage of Super 8 s cricket. The team is to be congratulated on their success, behaviour and representation of the college. Thank you to all girls who tried out, it was a very tough selection process! Todd Hughes (Coach) Interschool Cricket Championships Junior Boys Super 8s A squad of ten boys travelled to the Aerodrome Ovals recently to compete as one of seven teams in the Super 8s format. Captained by Lachlan Rowett and competing in Pool B against RCSC and Merbein SC, the team made it through to the Semi Final with a win and a loss before losing to eventual competition winner St. Joseph s College in the Semi. A playoff for third place against Coomealla HS saw ISC score a competitive 117 but lose too many wickets and eventually go down by 30 runs. Team members: Bryce Thomas, Thomas Moore, Jake Barker, Brayden Phipps, Selim Keles, Brodie Jackson, Dom Price, Lachlan Rowett (C), Connor Tyson and Shannon Brennan. Scores: ISC 119 defeated by RCSC 172 ISC 183 defeated Merbein P Semi Final: ISC 127 defeated by SJC rd /4 th Playoff: ISC 117 defeated by CHS 147 Mark Kerr (Coach)
