Garry Costello Principal Assistant Principal s Report Course Selection All students have been involved in course information sessions and selection this term. Year 7, 8 and 9 students had to submit their 2014 course selections by the end of last week. Any outstanding selection forms are to be returned as soon as possible. Year 10 students met with staff from Mildura Senior College this Wednesday for their course selection process. School Captains and House Captains Nominations for 2014 School Captains and House Captains have closed and the quality of applicants is very high. The voting process for Year 7, 8 and 9 students and for staff will occur on the 6 th and 7 th November. Prior to voting, applicants will have the opportunity to speak to students at Year Level assemblies and to staff at morning recess. School Nurse Jo Paxton, who has been the School Nurse for over 10 years, resigned last week following an extensive period of leave in Jo has provided advice and support to staff and pastoral care to many students in this time and she will be missed by the College community. The school is very fortunate to have Julia Lohmeyer appointed as Jo s replacement. Julia is an experienced School Nurse and has a strong background in child and adolescent mental health. Julia will commence at Irymple Secondary College on Monday 11 th November and she will work 0.5 at Irymple SC and 0.5 at Red Cliffs Secondary College. School Assemblies Regular whole school assemblies have been reintroduced to the College calendar this year. The assemblies have been a success, with students looking forward to the variety of reports and performances and the presentation of awards and Student of the Month Certificates. At the last assembly held there was a performance by the Year 8 Dance class and two items from the upcoming production of Aladdin. The success of this year s assemblies demonstrates the importance of whole school events on a regular basis. Garry Costello - 25 Years of Service Garry Costello was acknowledged last week by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development for his 25 years of service to the Victorian Education system, with many of those years as an Assistant Principal and Principal. Garry also spent the first 12 years of his teaching career in the NSW system, giving him a total of 37 years in education. This is a major contribution to the lives of many young people and as a school we also would like to acknowledge Garry s service. Mrs Blackie and Mrs Symes Assistant Principals 9/10 Girls Interschool Cricket On Tuesday 22 nd October, the ISC Year 9/10 Girls cricket team travelled to the Aerodrome Ovals to compete at the interschool competition. With a side made up of all Year 10 students, the girls were confident and excited about the opportunity to represent the school. Game 1 saw ISC take on a much improved Coomealla High. Team captain Lorianne Lowerson won the toss and elected to bowl, which proved to be a good decision with Madeline Barker taking a wicket in the first over. Unfortunately, the wickets dried up for a few overs and some wayward bowling added valuable runs to the opposition and gifted them with a number of free hits. With Coomealla 2
3 posting a competitive 4/81, it was up to the ISC team to make some early runs to relieve the pressure. Madeline Barker and Abbie Dean tried their best and moved the side to 0/13 after 2 overs, and the big hitting combination of Lorianne Lowerson and Jemima Underwood amassed 33 runs off the final overs. ISC finishing with 5/77, and dropping the first game of the competition. In Game 2, a young Red Cliffs SC was blown out of the water early with the Irymple opening combination smashing 45 runs off 2 overs, including three 6 s and two 4 s. The runs continued to flow with Tessa Kiel and Kaila McLean adding 37 runs to the team total in their stint at the crease. Irymple finished with an impressive 2/128. With the team enthusiasm up and about, Red Cliffs found it difficult to rotate the strike due to some excellent fielding and bowling on display by the ISC team, (with 22 out of 36 balls resulting in no runs). ISC ran out comfortable winners in the end, keeping the opposition to 1/74. The following game saw a showdown against arch rivals St. Joseph s, who again were the favourites to win the tournament. St. Joseph s were sent in to bat, and the quality of fielding and bowling was again on display by ISC which silenced the opposition supporters. Heading into the final 2 overs, ISC had restricted St. Joseph s to 4/57. This saw St. Joseph s send in their strongest player to save the team, accumulating 0/61, and bumping the team s total to 4/118. The ISC girls were determined to match the target set and started confidently, racing to 22 off the first over. The runs continued with Sheree Moore and Jemima Underwood hitting consecutive boundaries. Once again, St. Joseph s sent in their best player in the final over and allowed only 2 runs to be made off her over. St. Joseph s eventually won by 29 runs. The final game of the day was a battle for third position against Chaffey and the ISC team were immediately put on the back foot with Chaffey blasting 101 runs for 4 wickets in the opening innings. But the girls replied quickly thanks to Courtney Hynoski and Kaila McLean collecting 37 runs, including some big hitting clearing the boundary. Once again the runs continued to flow with Sheree Moore and Abbie Dean making 0/42, Madeline and Courtney making 1/31 and Lorianne and Jordyn Ashenden making 0/38. ISC won the bronze medal match by 57 runs. Congratulations to all who participated on the day and represented the college with high levels of sportsmanship, respect and enthusiasm. Mr Hughes. Year 9 Drug Forum Eric's Story On Tuesday 15 th October Year 9 students attended the annual Sunraysia Drug Forum. This event is organised by Victorian Police in conjunction with other agencies. Students have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the drug issues in today s society. Each year a guest speaker is invited and this year s speaker was basket-baller Eric Bailey. This is his story: Born in South Central Los Angeles, one of the toughest neighbourhoods in America, with a bone disease in both knees, Eric was abandoned by his birth parents. He fought incredible odds to elevate himself into a brighter future. Dealing with racism, drug infested surroundings, gang violence, low socio-economic conditions and a school system that said he would never graduate; his turning point came at age 14 when Eric began to plan his future - not by saying, but by doing. He trained every morning and studied every evening. He tried out for the Basketball team at school and went on to take his high school basketball team to its first and only state Championship! Because of Eric's planning, persistence and passion, he received a Basketball scholarship to Boise State University and graduated with a Bachelor in Marketing and Communications. Eric 3
4 came to Australia in 1982 to play basketball in the National Basketball League, playing with the Hobart Devils, Melbourne Tigers and Gold Coast Rollers. During that time he worked in many customer-driven businesses such as sales, promotions, fitness, media, marketing, basketball coaching and health industries. After retiring from basketball Eric decided to direct his passion into motivating and activating people. One of his first roles was as host of the NBA ALL STAR weekend Jam session, the first person brought in from outside the USA. Here he was able to combine his communication skills, marketing, sport and energy to actively energise over 100,000 people over a three-day weekend. Eric uses the lessons of life, sport, and international travel to deliver dynamic presentations and interactive workshop. SSV (State) Athletics Championships. Following their success at the Loddon Mallee Region Aths, Mebal Singh and Jeremy Aworth competed at the State championships at the Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on Tuesday 22 nd October. Mebal, while not performing at her best, came 5 th in the 15 Yrs Girls Discus with a throw of 26.15m. Jeremy also did not perform as well as he would have liked and finished 6 th overall with a throw of 11.22m. It is worth noting that in both Mebal and Jeremy s events, competitors broke records by significant distances. In Mebal s Discus event, the winner broke the record by 2m and 11cm with a throw of 38.55m, while in Jeremy s Shot Put event, the previous record was beaten by an astounding 2m and 24cm with the winner throwing an incredible 19.19m. Mebal and Jeremy were certainly up against some formidable competition. Congratulations to both competitors on a job well done to make it to the State Titles. Steve Morrish Sport Co-ordinator Interschool Basketball The title for the Interschool Basketball competition was played at the Hothouse on the 14 th of October. Irymple Secondary College entered two boys teams and two girls teams from junior and intermediate age groups. Although, having limited time to prepare and train, the teams performed admirably but were unable to win their sections. All of our teams represented Irymple Secondary College in the best way possible and show-cased some fantastic shooting and passing skills. With some more time to gel from training we could have pushed harder for some victories over our rivals. The intermediate boys team in particular played hard in their group games, but were outclassed by a determined Merbein P-10 side who later went on to win the competition and also at LMR level. The junior boys finished 3 rd overall and look like a promising outfit for the future because the side consisted of mostly year 7 students. The junior girls made it to the semi-final and were defeated by St Joseph s College in a highly competitive match. Our girls should be proud of how they performed as they played very well as a team and all contributed in some way, especially in defence. The intermediate girls also found their way through to the semi-final by finishing 2 nd in their pool. They too were unable to find a way to win and were narrowly beaten by a better team on the day. Overall, we all had a great day and we should be proud of our performances. Mr. Kee Year 7/8 Girls Cricket The girls started off the day with a comfortable win over Trinity Lutheran College. They showed their abilities with the 4
5 bat and ball, fours and sixes being whacked all over the ground and plenty of wickets being taken. Merbein P-10 College proved too strong in the second game, and Chaffey took the upper hand in the third. Going into the final game, the girls were still full of enthusiasm and all eager to have a chance to hit the ball, but unfortunately St Joes finished with the win. Whilst all players played their part, fielding, bowling and batting, a few stand-out players for the day were Courtney Ransome, Emma Martin, Georgia Robertson and Courtney Rhodes. Breanna Smith Cake Decorators Success Last term year 10 Cake Decorators made fruit cakes and decorated them. They learnt how to apply icing along with many new skills to use in the future. There were many wonderful creations demonstrating sugar work, flood work and piping skills. Eleven students entered their cakes in the Mildura Show, with some great results. Jess Burgess won first prize for her cake entered in the Any Other Decorated Cake Section. Kerryn Pongraz Class Teacher Office Hours The office is attended between 8:30 am- 4:30pm daily. Parents/guardian s wishing to contact the school outside these hours are invited to leave a message on the school answering machine Tessa Kiel was awarded second prize. Lauren Swift was awarded second place in the Decorated Novelty Cakes Section Student Absences, Late Arrivals or Early Departures Please notify the office before 10am if your child will not be attending school If your child is late or needs to leave school early, a signed note from home is required or a parent/ /guardian must sign the student in/out. 6 Exchange Student Report Nearly 5 months are gone and I m feeling very well here at Irymple Secondary. After a few weeks I recognized that there were some differences between school in Australia and school in Germany. In Germany my day began at 6 o clock because school begins at 7:45. Most students at school are walking or travelling by bus or tram. The sessions in Germany are 90 minutes long and after every session we have a 30 minutes break. On most days I have four sessions till 3:15 and sometimes I have just 3 sessions till 1:15. In Germany we have no electives so we can t choose which subjects we want to do. We have the English language since Year 3 and in Year 6 we have to learn another language (Latin, French or Russian). The teachers are very strict and sometimes very impolite. Our school year begins in summer (September) and after the first semester we get our midterm report. Our form classes are our form for every lesson except of our 2 nd language. Carnivals like Sports Carnival, Spring Carnival or Schools Bilby Day are very rare in my school and most time no fun. We have no houses like Johansen, Middleton, Lloyd and Robertson. At most events at my school it is an expectation that all students participate. every year into the forest and bring bird food, carrots and other vegetables with us. We issue them in the woods. After that at home we are eating our special Christmas cake called Stolle. Stolle is very famous in Germany and you can only buy it at Christmas time. It is fluffy dough with sultanas. Some of my friends don t like Stolle because of the sultanas but I will miss it. After having our Christmas cake with coffee or tea the children get their presents from Father Christmas. Father Christmas is often played by a relative or friend of the family and one time when I was younger I recognized who he was! After everybody got their presents we are sitting together and talking about the year. For dinner every family has their own tradition. Some of them are eating sausages with potato salad and some are eating goose with red cabbage and dumplings. Because of our tradition we are eating Ragout fin. On the 25 th of December we are going out for lunch. For German s, lunch is the biggest meal. We mostly eat warm food for lunch. At the second Christmas day we are eating special meat with dumplings, red cabbage and sprouts. Luise Koehler After school students often have to do homework especially in higher classes. But often we also go to sports. A very famous sport in Germany is soccer. Most boys of my class are playing soccer, but also European handball, swimming, athletics, judo, cycling and others. I often meet friends at the sports club. In Australia the summer is coming within Christmas. In Germany we have a white Christmas most years. At the moment there was some snow in Leipzig, my home town. We celebrate Christmas on the 24 th of December. At this day the family is coming together. Some of them are going to church to see the scenario of the birth of Jesus Christ. My family has our own tradition. Because of my idea we are going Irymple Secondary College kindly thanks the above sponsors 6
