1 MEMO Schedule 'B' Class Environmental Assessment and Preliminary Design Lakeview Boulevard Improvements Culvert Assessment February 15, 2017 As per the preferred Lakeview Boulevard alignment provided by the Town of Ajax, there exist various drainage culvert crossings which require remediation from a road design and/or wildlife corridor perspective. As shown on a provided topographical drawing and in discussions with the Town consultant, TMIG, three metal culverts are being looked into at this time. It should be noted that no existing storm flow information was available at this time and an opening area is all that is being considered such that existing hydraulic characteristics are maintained. Generally, the subject culverts have little to no cover and are affecting the condition of the road pavement. It should also be noted that this area of the Town of Ajax has been identified to be within a Spill Zone of the Carruther s Creek Floodplain and filling is to be kept to a minimum such that existing floodplain characteristics remain effectively unchanged from that of existing conditions. Therefore, larger diameter or overall rise drainage crossings are not recommended as filling would be required to install these structures. Three or four sided concrete culverts (open bottom vs concrete bottom) with a low overall rise is recommended. Existing Conditions Culvert 1 Consists of twin 450mm diameter CSP s Opening Area = Pi(r) 2 = 0.159m 2 each or 0.318m 2 West Culvert Upstream Invert=75.42 Downstream Invert=75.39 Length=~13.0m Slope=0.23% Capacity=0.074m 3 /s East Culvert Upstream Invert=75.45 Downstream Invert=75.37 Length=~13.0m Slope=0.62% Capacity=0.122m 3 /s 1
2 Use combined flow m 3 /s to size culvert Slope = 0.30% (from TMIG) Rise = use 0.30m A four sided concrete Box Culvert with a rise of 0.30m at 0.30% would need to be a minimum of 0.57m wide. Culvert 2 Consists of a 900mm diameter CSP Opening Area = Pi(r) 2 = 0.636m 2 Upstream Invert=75.22 Downstream Invert=75.17 Length=~14.0m Slope=0.36% Capacity=0.588m 3 /s Use flow of m 3 /s to size culvert Slope = 0.50% (from TMIG) Rise = use 0.750m A four sided concrete Box Culvert with a rise of 0.750m at 0.50% would need to be a minimum of 0.46m wide. Culvert 3 Consists of a 600mm diameter CSP Opening Area = Pi(r) 2 = 0.283m 2 Upstream Invert=75.60 Downstream Invert=75.05 Length=~16.5m Slope=3.33% Capacity=0.607m 3 /s Use flow of m 3 /s to size culvert Slope = 0.50% (from TMIG) Rise = use 0.450m A four sided concrete Box Culvert with a rise of 0.450m at 0.50% would need to be a minimum of 0.72m wide. Notes: * Mannings Equation used to calculate flow capacities see attached * No inlet/outlet controls taken into consideration for capacity calculations at this time. * Existing Elevation/length/diameter information taken from survey prepared by DFP surveyors dated June 3 rd 2015 Project No
