1 RELOAD! Celebrating Our 25th Year April 2012 NO MORE CUPCAKES IN MILLBROOK Jeff Hunter Orvis Sandanona pulled out all the stops for The Original March Madness on Sunday, March 18th. Ninety-six Travelers and their guests took advantage of the Orvis hospitality and the gorgeous 72 degree day. We ended up starting a couple minutes later than expected as John Hachmann and I ironed out some last minute details of the shoot. We gathered for safety instructions and were dispatched to our stations a little after 10:00. Usually we expect to see some high scores coming from our shoots at Orvis Sandanona. Edward and Andrew tweaked the course and had some rather challenging targets. Quite frankly, some of the best targets I ve seen at Orvis in the twelve years I ve been frequenting the place. Station Two had a straight away trap bird followed by an honest to goodness 50 yard rising/crossing target. There was some discussion as to whether the target was 45 or 50 yards out, but either way it was time to screw in the U3. Master Statistician John Hachmann told me that out of 95 shooters only 24.9% of them were hit. In addition, only four people hit all three; Steve Coppa, John McCaffrey, Joe DeMarco, and Robert Chambers. Of the four people, John McCaffrey was the only person to clean the whole stand! Good shooting John!! The target setters definitely took advantage of the terrain on station 5. The first bird was a crossing left to right target that rode the top of a ravine and then dipped down into a valley when it ran out of steam. The report was a going away bird that appeared to rise

2 over the ravine, but since most of the misses were over the target it probably wasn t rising. One nice thing about Orvis is they still mix in some manual traps. Station 12 was a true pair off a manual that was basically two straight away trap-style targets stacked on top of each other. One bird came out faster than the other and the slower bird had a little curl to it. Some of us found it very difficult to concentrate on just one target when they were both plainly in front of you. Lots of eights came out of this stand as did some fours. We stepped off the course a couple minutes past one. Sure there were a couple backups, but that will happen when you have 18 squads over 15 stations. Overall the flow was very good and the Orvis staff got us in and out pretty quickly considering we had close to 100 guns. Lunch at Copperfields was served about 15 minutes after we got there. The usual scoring team kicked in and had the scores ready very quickly. There were several shooters in the mid-eighties, but none could catch Dean Anglace with an 88. The class winners and subclass winners walked away with gift cards from Dicks Sporting Goods for their outdoor gear purchases. On the way out I noticed Carol Roesslein confiscated Fred s gift card and I bet she shows up in Maryland with a new pair of boots! NRA MEMBERSHIP As requested at the Annual Meeting, Dean Anglace inquired to the NRA about what advantages a club has by being affiliated with the NRA. NRA Club membership entitles the members to special discounts on insurance, eligibility for range grants, and awards. There is no obvious advantage to having 100% club participation. 3 JUNIOR JAMBOREE COMMITTEE Chairman Jim Comiotes reports that planning is underway for the Second Annual Junior Jamboree. The Jamboree will take place on September 22nd, so mark your calendars. Also, Jim is looking for a Fundraising Chairman. This person would be responsible for soliciting donations and running some 50/50 raffles at various Travelers Shoots.
