1 1 JULY 2011 NEWSLETTER CELEBRATING OUR 24th YEAR Jeff Hunter, Editor Pro Tem The next Travelers Monthly Shoot is Summertime, Summertime on July 17 th. The Fall Trip is September 23 rd 25 th. RETURN TO MID-HUDSON Jeff Hunter The CT Travelers returned to Mid-Hudson Sporting Grounds to hold their Annual Club Championships on June 19 th. Peter Wicker, the Club Manager at Mid Hudson, set a fun and challenging course for the 120+ Travelers in attendance. Last year s Club Champion, Stefanie Steinkraus, was defending her crown against some of the best in the region. Our very first station set the tone for the whole shoot. We were presented with a mostly straight away quartering chandelle from the left followed by low left-to-right crosser about at skeet height but about 30 yards away. Surprisingly, the crosser gave us the most problems as a lot of people shot over the target. Stations four, five, six and seven were the stations that separated the cream from the milk. Lots of twos and threes on these stations (in my group, at least) kept the scores down and left us shooters shaking our heads. There was some distance in this group and some straightforward trap-like shots that lulled the shooter into a false sense of security. None of them were easy, but none were impossible either Champion Stefanie Steinkraus presents Christian Suter with the Club Champion Award for 2011.
2 2 Usually when you round the corner on the backside at Mid Hudson, the targets are set a notch tougher than the rest. Station 12 was a very fun presentation with a left to right crosser off a platform that was high above your head. It crossed through an abbreviated window in the treetops before it disappeared out of sight. But wait, this was a true pair with a high traplike bird going straight away. The obvious way to approach this bird was to get the crosser and then you were in position for the trap bird. A couple new shooters in our group shot the trap bird first and swung quickly on the crosser and got it as it crested the trees. Just goes to show that sometimes the best way is not the only way. When the scores were tallied, Christian Suter was crowned the new Club Champion with a score of 90. Long Island s favorite son, Howard Berman, was the Runner Up with an 84. Yes, it was that much of a difference between the HOA and the next best. Newly elected Board Member, David Miller, took over the MC duties and did a fabulous job presenting some very attractive trophies to the class and concurrent winners. On a more personal note, my nephews Chris and Matt, attended a skeet clinic last summer at Seymour Rod & Gun Club. They just started shooting Sporting Clays last November. On his fifth time out, Chris captured the Jr. Runner Up award at this shoot. I am really proud of both of them. Lots of Juniors were on hand for the shoot on Father s Day. Next month Mr. Peabody fires up the wayback machine and we shoot Simo Sunday at Orvis Sandanona. Orvis is always a fun time and the theory is that Simo Sunday will be twice the fun. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Chris Schwarzer I wanted to share some news with you regarding Carolee and how the CTSCA organization has an effect on her. Last weekend Carolee shot the Mass State qualifier for the Junior Olympic Skeet program and won HOA. Last year (shooting for the first time) she did fine and after the competition she said to me she wanted to win. Throughout the ensuing year she worked and worked on improving her technique and scores. I believe her interest in shooting and competing was kindled in the CTSCA organization and their wonderful members who encouraged and supported her and for that I wanted to share this with you and say thanks to them all. We are planning on going to the SCTP and Junior Olympic Nationals the the Olympic Training Camp in Colorado this summer and she is excited to go.
3 3 INSTRUCTORS DIRECTORY From time to time people ask me if I can recommend someone for lessons. This is always a difficult question to answer, as what I look for in a coach may be different in what they are looking for in a coach. Below is a list of some of the more popular instructors in this area covering all levels and all techniques. Name & Contact Info Borst, Steve 6274 State Hwy 30 Esperance, NY (518) (days) (518) bigursis@aol.com CTSCA Member Cabassa, Luis (860) (h) (860) (c) claysbreaker@comcast.net CTSCA Member From the Instructor Master Class Shooter in NSCA Experienced in trap and skeet shooting I teach the Move, Mount, Shoot method of shotgun shooting. I teach from novice to experienced shooters by appointment. I teach at Sunset Farm Sporting Clays range in Delanson NY. I will travel to students shooting facility for instruction. I am an NSCA Level III instructor who has taught hundreds of shooters from first time ever through Master Class. I believe that all shooting methods are useful on a Sporting Clays course and recommend them according to the target presentation and the shooter s abilities. I don t believe in forcing a different method on an experienced shooter who has been shooting another successfully. I have also taught wingshooting (at the Orvis wing-shooting schools, and in Argentina, too). I believe that good fundamentals are the key to good shooting for both the new or experienced shotgunner. Slumps in tournament shooting can often be traced back to being lax about the proper basics. I enjoy instructing people who are truly enthusiastic about clays or bird shooting (or both). I offer instruction at either the student s home course, or my own set-up in Dutchess County, NY.

I have worked with shooters of all ages as well as women shooters. I usually teach at Mid-Hudson sporting grounds, but have taught at Dover Furnace and Wallkill Rod and Gun Club. Currently I'm an AA shooter and look forward to meeting new shooters and welcoming them to the challenging shooting world of sporting clays. Lessons are by appointment with Saturdays being optimal until the summer season, and then my schedule opens up as I teach in the public school system during the year. Owner Rock Mt Sporting Clays, NSCA Level II instructor. Teaches many styles, no particular one, but will work with experienced shooter's current style or teach new shooters from square one.
