1 OCTOBER 2009 PRESIDENT S CORNER Ralph Graul As I start to write this, it is the night before the Culpepper Air Fest. September was a great month for flying with the IMAA event at the Flying Circus, NVRC s Pattern Contest which was a very successful event CDed by Don Szczur. There was a good turnout with excellent flying in all the classes. Duane Beck squeaked out a first place in Sportsman by only a few points. Congratulations Duane! A Big thank you to the Culpeper Barnstormers for opening their field up to our club members to fly while the FARM field was closed for these events. On Saturday, October 3rd, the club hosted the Fall FARM Float Fly at Lake Ritchie. I was not able to attend this event due to a business trip but I have heard it was a successful event. A good day of flying, food, and fellowship was had by those that attended. A special thanks to Doug Cash for organizing this enjoyable event. I would like to thank everyone that made this event a success. I have asked Doug Cash to work up a report for this newsletter and hopefully have some pictures for the club website. Several members provided static display aircraft and RC flight demonstration at the Culpeper Airfest on Saturday October 10th. Our thanks to John Hunton for organizing the various RC clubs participating in the Air Fest, to Bill McMullen for coordinating the flight line activities and Doug Cash for arranging the static displays. It was a great show and more of the crowd got to enjoy the RC flying this year due to a later start. The weather did limit the model air show due to cross winds but those that did fly performed well and wowed the crowd including Snoopy s Flying dog house which the wind tried it s best to over power Snoopy s pride and joy but Snoopy won out in the end with a rough landing in the grass. Duane Beck volunteered to lead our Crockett Park activities again this year with the help of Bill Towne. I heard that 20 children and two adults were buddy boxed and experienced the thrill of RC flight. October 11 th was the clubs final fun fly for I Cded this fun fly and 12 pilots participated. The first event was Sudden Death where the pilot s plane takes off and flys for an unknown amount of time and then is told to land at which time a stop watch is started and then stopped when the plan touches down, second event was Beads On A String this was the most rolls in a straight line the length of the runway and the third event was the Dice Roll Maneuvers the pilot rolled a die to determine what maneuver to accomplish then rolled the die again to determine how many times to accomplish that maneuver, time started on takeoff roll and stopped upon touchdown. Everyone claimed they had a good time and as I recall all planes landed safely. The mowing season is over and my thanks to everyone that helped maintain our field this year. Great job everyone! 2 The October club meeting is on the 27th at the Warrenton Community Center at 7PM. We will begin taking nominations for next year s Board of Directors. We will also take nominations at the November meeting and voting will conclude in December at the Club Christmas Party. Ralph Graul See You At The Field, Ralph For the Secretary s report, nothing new to report. Nic Burhans gave the Treasurer s Report. We now have $ in the bank. With new member Bill Parn, we now have 112 members in the club. The budget projection for next year looks good if all members re-new on time. AMA renewals and annual dues are coming up soon. Nic also noted he has the T-shirts and ball caps for sale; medium sized items are getting short on supply. Old Business Bruce Green gave a report on Bud Hilker. He is sounding better, and he has been out a bit. For mowing the field, there will be 2-3 more cuts this year. Then we will clean up the machines, and do some tear down for the winter. Some money will need to be spent on the equipment this winter. Club Meeting, October 27, at the Warrenton Community Center, 7:00 PM SECRETARY S REPORT Ralph Graul called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Warrenton Community Center. Board members Ralph Graul, Bill Towne, Doug Cash, Nic Burhans and were present as were 11 other members. The Float Fly is coming up on October 3 at Lake Ritchie. Preparations are coming along fine. Signs have been put up at local hobby shops, including the new one in Warrenton. The Culpepper Air Fest on October 10 is coming up soon. Our club flies for an hour at noon. We will have a static display with 2 tents. Full size planes fly after us. Duane Beck gave a report on Crockett Park preparations. Culpepper Field update The road is ready, and gravel is OK. The field is in good shape (thanks, Nic Burhans). Membership is open now. There is a beaver problem which the county will address. The pattern contest in September was a success. 27 flyers participated. Hog Wild catered the food. Six rounds were complete by 1 PM Sunday. We earned $68 from the event. Bill White donated his grill to replace the old one which was unsafe. Thanks Bill. Big Bird Fly-In at the Flying Circus Dale Lester reported on this event. Several concerns were voiced. A midair occurred which damaged one of Dale s planes under questionable circumstances. Some pilots felt that the conditions were unsafe at times; one of our members (an experienced pilot) refused to fly citing safety

3 concerns. There was confusion of fees charged to FARM club members. New Business John Hunton made the recent issue of Model Aviation with his article on torque management (using right wing weights). Also, in this issue of MA, you can find Mud Duck items for sale. Someone bought the rights to the Duck from Tom Chipley. There was a fire at the field on Sept. 13 due to an electric model crash. The fire department was called. The person responsible for this incident was not a club member and was not flying with another member. Remember that club member lists are at the field. No non-members may fly without an AMA card, and they must be a guest of a club member. Charlie K. noted that Hobby Hangar s Bob Johnson will order items for you. He can even have items drop shipped to you. your request to him at bob@hobbyhangarva.com. They want to support our spring float fly with food and prizes. Show and Tell The following show and tell items were at the meeting: 1. Dick Sutton A book showing era R/C equipment. 2. Nic Burhans Superstar 40, an old ARF. 4c Enya motor, flaperons. Had to be re-glued. 3. Duane Beck achieved 1 st place in his class at the pattern contest by 6 points (in 4000). 4. John Hunton hobby equipment from Chinese web sites (hobbycity.com and hobbyking.com) Prices are about 25% of typical US prices for similar equipment. Avoid Turnigy but Rhino is OK. 5. John Hunton tuned pipe increased power output by 30% Presentation John Hunton brought in his laptop and played a DVD for us from a camera he mounted on the fuse of the Halifax. It shows the takeoff and two engines on right wing from up in the air. Also, he had video of a tethered car that goes really fast, and C/L speed flyers. Raffle Lloyd Hinricks won the money. 4 FALL FLOAT FLY The annual fall float fly was held on October 3 at Lake Ritchie. Although the weather forecasts leading up to the weekend were indicating the likelihood of rain, the weather turned out to be a spectacular sunny day with perfect fall temperatures. There were 29 registered pilots along with a number of spectators who came just for the gourmet lunch. Throughout the day, the skies were kept full of planes by the participants. Despite the sunny skies, a number of aircraft managed to get more than the bottoms of their floats wet. The valiant air-sea rescue team did a great job of saving the downed aircraft.

5 One of the rescue crew was almost lost in the wilderness during retrieval, but I am happy to report that Vince Dr. Livingstone Tobacco was himself rescued and led back to civilization through the intrepid efforts of several pilots who wish only to be known as Team Stanley. Special thanks are given to Bill McMullen, Bill Towne, Dan Jones, and Ron Coen. Without the efforts of these gentlemen to secure the retrieval boat, the barbecue, and the food, as well as checking in the pilots, retrieving downed aircraft, and cooking the food this event could not have taken place. Next time you see these outstanding members at the field be sure to thank them for their hard work.
