6 CARE AND USE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS We all should have fire etinguishers in our RV s. They probably stay in their brackets with little or no thought. To properly maintain them take them out of the bracket monthly, clean them and inspect the gauge. The pressure should still be in the green. Then turn them upside down and shake to loosen the powder inside. To use a fire etinguisher, remember the acronym: P A S S P - Pull out the pin. A - Aim the etinguisher at the base of the fire. S - Squeeze or press the handle. S - Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire. Keep spraying the etinguisher until you run out of powder or you are sure the fire is out. Often Neglected RV Safety Accessories - a must read RV safety is usually focused on tires, eceeding weight capacity, brakes, navigating hilly terrain, etc. I obviously didn t spend enough time thinking about interior safety as you can see from the results of our interior safety inspection. Fire Etinguisher The President of our Good Sam Chapter provided a tutorial on the care of fire etinguishers. In following his advice we found that our fire etinguisher was (1) small and (2) beyond the accepted replace by date. The etinguisher was already four years old when it was originally installed. We upgraded the fire etinguisher by the entrance from a 5lb, to a 10lb and added another 10lb in the bedroom area. Turning the etinguisher upside down monthly and whacking it on the bottom prevents the contents from collecting there. That maintenance action was never performed on our old etinguisher. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing etinguishers at 12 years or earlier if they do not pass inspection. Fire Alarm We replace the battery in our RV fire alarms each year just to be sure the battery low alarm doesn t start going off in the middle of the night, right? But do we ever check the replace by date? Ours was past its replace by date so we went shopping for a replacement. Luckily we found one with a worry free lithium-ion 10 year battery. NFPA recommends smoke alarm replacement every 10 years and our new one has a end of life warning chirp. Since the operating temperatures are 40F to 100F, I wrote an 8 year replacement date on it, assuming if those temperatures are eceeded it will effect the battery and operating life of the alarm. Belt and 6

7 suspenders thinking. Oh, and they recommend you clean with compressed air once a year. Another maintenance action I have neglected. Carbon Monoide Detector I found ours in the bedroom area and it was also beyond its replace by date. I believe the older detectors needed to be replaced after 6 to7 years. Our new one will start chirping at end of life, estimated to be 10 years. The good news is ours has the worry free lithium-ion 10 year battery. We upgraded to get one with a readout so we can see the level of CO even if its not yet at dangerous levels. UL requires that the detector not display any CO levels below 30PPM and will sound an alarm at 70PPM. The ability to see CO levels displayed will give some piece of mind when running the generator. LP Gas Detector And lastly, there is the LP Gas Detector. It used to go off when ever the wife used hair spray. That hasn t happened for the last couple of years. Now I know why. It was way past its replacement date. So off to Camping World. The new LP detector specifies that its replacement date is 5 years after power up. Our RV safety accessories are now all updated with a replace by date written on the outside. If you have an older RV like ours please take some time to check that your safety accessories have fresh batteries and are working correctly. Safe travels, Roger Roger Lee, Rollin Roamers member & OGS State Publicity Chair ELEPHANT STEW 1 Elephant Salt and pepper 2 Jack Rabbits (optional) (Found this recipe in a cookbook I was using for a Rally Book Craft...Karen) Cut elephant into small bite-sized pieces. This should take about 2 months. Brown in large skillet, making enough gravy from the drippings to cover. Cook over mesquite campfire about 4 weeks at 465 degrees or until tender. Serves 3,836 people. If more folks are epected, the 2 jack rabbits may be added, but do this only if necessary as most people do not like to find hare in their stew. This recipe was very popular back in my grandfather s day. In fact, it was so popular that most hunters are hard-pressed to find any elephants in Teas now. However, adding the hares was so unpopular that most cooks would just as soon serve small portions than add the rabbits.so that s why there s still so many jack rabbits around today. 7

11 ATTENTION: ALL VETERANS We are going to honor all our veterans at the rally in Roseburg june 21-25, 2017 We are building a list of our Oregon Good Sam Veterans. I was asking all Chapter Secretaries to PLEASE send me a list of the veterans in your chapter before the end of the year. Also if we knew where they served, which war, date served that would be helpful. Thank you for helping me. We have 197 Veterans listed so far. We still need Veteran Lists from the following Chapters. Bridgetown Campers Cascade Sams Columbia River Sams Good Sam Beaver Dam #1 Lighthousers Portland Single Sams Rolling Coasters AD Simons AD Morrill AD Krause AD Morrill AD Veenendaal AD Morrill AD Hancock We don t want to leave any of our Veterans out when we put the list on the Communications Wall during the Rally. Please help us get them all. Thanks!! Veterans are people who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States of America, for an amount up to and including their life. REMEMBER ALL OF OUR VETERANS!! 11

12 Larry and I have a fairly large yellow pole building that we have made into our Good Sam warehouse. Stored in it are our two OGS trailers and lots of Rally (Samboree) supplies. Right now you will find some of the Good Samers priming and painting the Saturday Night Show backdrop paneling (20-48 sheets of plywood). The Parman and Veenendaal RVs are parked between the farm buildings with more coming in. In between priming and waiting for the paint to dry, they decided to take a drive around eastern Linn County, headed into the hills. Yesterday, around 4 p.m., Karen received a call from the wanderers telling us they were broke down and needed to be picked up. Following our GPS, we found them near Jordan, a country village in the Cascade foothills. Until the truck gets fied, the Veenendaals will call our farm their home. :-) We are looking forward to having more of you here on the farm net week tracing and painting. See the net page for the invitation to join us. Another 60 degree day - oh how I love them. Last year, when we visited with most of our chapters, I gave up gardening for that year - we weren t home enough to keep things watered. But this year I am ecited about growing veggies again. I have the seeds planted in a seed-started potting miture. The lettuce, spinach, cabbage, brussel sprouts and sunflowers have already stuck their heads up. Larry thinks I am watering them too much, the seed packets say to keep them moist, so it will be fun to see how they turn out. By the way I did not plant zucchini. Most of my time now is spent working on Good Sam projects of all kinds, including our State Rally. I have already sent all the Chapter presidents/reps my proposed agenda for the Spring Gathering. As you can see on page 4 we have finally reached our quorum so we can do business but I still want more of our leaders to attend. We have been handed the responsibility to keep Good Sam viable. It is going to take a lot of discussion, brain-storming and courage to make the changes necessary to keep us strong. I am so glad we are a family, a great big wonderful family. Thanks so much for being willing to be a part of it. Karen 12
