3 Cub Day and Club Member Appreciation Day Cub Day and Member Appreciation Day was a great day to be out! Everyone had a great time and the weather couldn t have been any better. Thanks for all those who helped out and made the event another successful day! Thanks to Tom Pham for the pictures!

4 How to Avoid Damaging Phillips Head Screws Written by Bob Mosley We all have at least one, and likely several, Phillips head screwdrivers in our tool boxes and field boxes. It is pretty much impossible to be a Do-It-Yourself kind of person without them. But, if you own anything manufactured of Asian origin, chances are, the cross-slotted screws on it are not "standard" Phillips head. So, if you find that your Phillips head screwdrivers are ruining your fasteners, it very well might be because you're using the wrong tool for the job. Lesser known is the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). Bottom-line; a standard Phillips driver will not go all the way into a JIS screw because the corner radius of the screw is smaller than that of a standard Phillips driver. As a result, it leads to what is referred to as "cam-out". In fact, the standard Phillips was created to allow this cam-out so that you know when maximum torque has been reached, avoiding over tightening or worse, snapping fasteners. Fortunately most of the RC engines we use come with SHCS (Socket Head Cap Screw) screws and bolts for the main assemblies such as crankcase and cylinder heads, but cross-slotted screws are still used for almost everything else attached to the engines. Also, many of our accessory items and especially electronic items are assembled with cross-slotted screws which likely are JIS. The differences between Phillips and JIS are not easily seen, so this illustration should help: Sometimes JIS screws will be identified with a dimple or dot on its head: Having this dot isn't always the case, but chances are, if you're working on an Asian made item, RC or otherwise, the screws with cross-slots will be JIS and not Phillips. JIS screwdrivers are not hard to find, ranging in price from the mid to high $20.00 for the budget stuff, on up to 3 times that (or more) for the good stuff. Good tools, if taken care of can last a lifetime and the right tool for the job saves time and money in the long run. 5 McMaster-Carr, individual JIS screwdrivers: RJR Cool Tools, JIS screwdriver sets: Here s a Tip (pun-intended): If you find that even when using the correct screwdriver, sometimes the tip still cams out and causes the driver to slip, and/or if you know that the screw has been in the part for a long period of time, just dip the tip of the screwdriver into some valve grinding compound. This will help eliminate tip slippage, especially when removing screws from engines that have endured many heat cycles. Bob Mosley credits: some information and images obtained from Thumpertalk. Starting with reviewing our SOP, looking at new recruiting ideas, "locking up" events for the rest of the year and interviewing prospective military candidates for the position of President. 6 All hands on deck!... Words from the Vice President Well, summer is here and we are off to great start with the club, starting on a good note with the first open cockpit display. Moving right into the Gillespie Air Show, the Cub Fly-in, Membership Day and Fun Fly all at the same time. This worked very well, all had a good time with two guest down from the San Bernardino area, taking $80.00 worth of gift certificates with them. I bumped into them in a fly-in in Chino they told me that they spent the $80.00 and then some at Discount Hobby's the day of our event. We also did a display at MCRD this was way more than expected, with what I believe to be over 325 cars not counting motor cycles, with other entertainment. This was held down with two members that showed, a little disappointing but for the two that did show they had a great time, people watching, talking to vets, working on new members, free lunch and looking at the cars, my hats off to Brad Kuller for putting the show together. We have an Open Cockpit display, also we have the kids from the San Diego Aero Space Museum, will be talking about those and any other events for July at the club meeting. We have put into place a fun little activity THE MODEL of THE MONTH event, at last months club meeting Ron Stark took the award, so bring in that model and show it off! We are also wanting to get the bring your unwanted treasures in for a fun raffle, this we did a couple of years back it worked great and it gave everyone at the meetings a chance to clean out what they no longer wanted and it gave members a chance to get something they could not live with out. I know I was lucky with some books and picture cards. As you can see from this article I AM SO GLAD JUNE is OVER and sliding right into JULY to do it all over again. 7 10 June 2014 Miramar Radio Control Flyers Minutes of the Meeting Held at the American Legion MAKE SURE PMO AND THE TOWER ARE CALLED FROM THE CLUBS PHONE TO CLOSE AND OPEN THE FIELD AND THAT THE BOOK IS FILLED OUT DO NOT FLY UNLESS THE BASE IS REACHED Meeting opened at 7PM with the pledge of allegiance. 28 members in attendance. Curtis Kitteringham: Frank Gagliardi was introduced to the general membership as the new president. Frank was selected by the remaining board members to fill the position as prescribed by the club bylaws. Secretary - Mark Lukens: May minutes were reviewed and tentatively approved pending detailed review to determine if certain meeting events were accurately reported as club business. Treasurer George Sager: Balances and expenditures reviewed. Motion made to approve, seconded and approved Safety Brian Werner: Be cognizant of the recent increase in helicopter traffic flying low over the field. If you see safety violations bring them up and if members are challenged when addressing members please support them. Field Marshall Tom Pham: Make sure that the lock is securely closed after locking it. A maintenance day to be scheduled soon to upgrade the east flight tables. June 22 nd : MRCD Car Show and recruiting event. Contact Curtis if you want to participate. June 28 th : Open Cockpit at Leatherneck Museum. July 19 th : Wings of Wonder San Diego Aerospace Museum day. Need laptops and airplanes. New Business: Frank Gagliardi: Brief review of base security efforts by the board. Board is working to adjust guidelines to ensure compliance with PMO requirements. Curtis Kitteringham: Model of the month and model of the year awards to begin this month. Model of the month to be voted on each month. Model of the year to be voted on in November and awarded in December. Frank Gagliardi: Scale Squadron event coming up in Chino on June Jerry Neuberger: Recognized contributions by John Weaver to the club. Frank Gagliardi: Introduced idea of expanding the criteria for military membership.
