1 Corvair Connection Central New Hampshire Corvair Association July 2013 Parade, Club MEETING, & Cook-out July 4 th. DETAILS on page 7. We would like to welcome new members Allison, Titus, Victoria, & Catherine Stewart to the club. Their winter home is in Florida and they are spending the summer in Tilton. Maybe we ll see them on the fourth. The cover shot this month, is from the Flag Hill Winery Meeting and Tour. We hope to see everyone on the fourth. It is always such a special day. Congratulations to Jim & Nancy Freeman on their recent wedding.
2 President s message: Brierside chat Greetings Corvair Friends, The winery with tour and tasting was very interesting and some varieties very tasty. I bought the maple one which was very smooth and nice to share with Janis. It was very good. She enjoyed it as well. I hope some will get to the Sunapee show in June. We have plans with our camping club. I am sure it will be a great show. We look forward to hearing about the shows and cruise nights everyone goes to. Janis is done with regular school but now is the time to finalize last year and get ready for the next year. You would think she could do this in her sleep after 25 years. Maybe that is when she does it? Next meeting will be on July 4, 2013 at the Joneses after the parade in Hopkinton, NH. Check the calendar for the information of when and where to meet. Looking forward to seeing everyone and enjoying a day of fun, friends and, of course, there will be food! Wayne Cox, Co President Vairs at the Flag Hill WINERY. 2
3 CNHCA Secretary s report June 2, 2013 Members present: Jon Guignard; Ginny Blackmer; Wayne Cox; Ray & Cecile Moore; Allan & Judy Jones; Bob & Agnes Brown; Jim & Phyllis Turner and Charlie & Kay Pieroni. Upon arrival at the Flag Hill Winery, the group was welcomed by a posted sign indicated a Vintage Car Display from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Special parking was awarded to the cars for display. After enjoying a picnic lunch under the shade trees at Flag Hill Winery and sharing the wealth of food available, the group enjoyed a very pleasant and educational tour of the Winery at a reduced entry fee because of the car display. It began outside under the shade trees where we all gathered to view the open vineyards. The tour then proceeded inside where the beginning to finish of the final product was explained. At the end of the tour there was sampling a number of a number of tasty wines and spirits, which were offered for sale at the end of the tour. Evidently Charlie was the special guest of honor as he was often offered something different than the majority with his specialty being announced by our host. 3:00 p.m. President Ginny called the meeting to order welcoming all of the group. She thanked Charlie & Kay for suggesting this winery tour as we all had a great time. Ginny noted that the Winery had actually put a blurb on their website about the cars and club prior to this event announcing the Classic Car Display. Secretary s Report: Charlie made a motion to accept the minutes as printed in the newsletter; seconded by Jon and approved. However, there was such a hesitation about the motion, I am not convinced that it was a willing motion! Treasurer's report: Bob reported the following: Beginning Balance $ 1, Dust-Off total profit $ plus and minus (details given, not recorded) ENDING BALANCE $ 1, Jon made a motion to accept the Treasurer's Report as read; seconded by Allan and approved. Editor s report: Jon thanked everyone for the timely contributions to the last newsletter. He will need info by June 19 th at the latest for the current newsletter. All is going well in general, but please keep the pictures and articles coming!! Old Business: Jon would love to continue receiving pictures of the dust-off. Ginny noted that a couple from Montreal, Canada arrived late at the Dust-Off as the group was picking up. However, they did join the group dinner enjoyed by many at the end of the day. They expressed interest in keeping in touch with the Club. Reminders: The July 4 th Parade will line up at the Hopkinton High School at 11:00 ish and then continue on for the usual cookout at the Jones'. August 11 th at the Ardito's in Moultonborough. Charlie noted the Wings & Wheels event in Rochester next Saturday, also saying there were other similar events being offered in the area. Typically they benefit a cause. More events listed in the newsletter. 3:25 p.m. Charlie made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Wayne and approved. The Club then continued on to the Pink Cadillac for more eating and socializing. The group did however encounter severe thunderstorms on the way home. Hope everyone made it safely and without incident! We made it fine except that the convertible leaks on MY side and I was a bit wet!! Respectfully submitted, Judy Jones, Acting Secretary From the Editor s cubical I may be absent from some club events and meetings for much of the summer season. I have been diagnosed with lymphoma and as a result of chemotherapy, and its effect on the immune system, I will be avoiding crowds when my immune system is at its weakest. Continue sending in articles and photos for publication. I will continue to work on the newsletter and will attend whatever events take place when my immune system is at the high point. There may be periods of time in the cycle when I am not up to working, so please submit materials as early as possible to allow me some wiggle room as it applies to publishing deadlines. Notice I have hair in the photo, we ll see how long it hangs around. 3
4 Tire Update by Bob Brown Recently, Kathy McCafferty (of Bay State Corvair Club) reported purchasing a set of P185/80R13 tires for her beautiful "Kermit" (Lime Green I960 sedan) from the Coker Tire folks, after all major tire companies gave her the same response "No Longer Available". Trouble is, they set her back $ each (not sure if that includes S&H) and the white side walls are 2-7/8" wide from the rims edge. Now, for those of us who favor the original 13" wheels, and in my own case would hate to give up my wire wheel covers, this is a problem. What you see pictured, however, is the tread design of a KUMHO Solus KR21 Black sidewall (white are extinct now) and this tire is surprisingly close to our P185/80R13 tires in overall diameter (23.2") which translates to negligible change in speedometer readings. Best part is that Norm (the Parts Manager at Cantin Chevrolet) can pass these along to club members for $75.00 each which includes a $10.00 S&H fee, while supplies last. So, if you don't mind running a Black tire and would like to take advantage of this opportunity to outfit your Corvair with a new set of sneakers, call Norm at and be sure to tell him you are a member of CNHCA. And finally, if you are interested in the possibility of adding "imitation" whitewalls, you can go to portawalls.com for a full description of what's available these days for radial tires. C U Soon Tech Talk LED dash lights by Ray Moore Recently I read an article in CORSA 4/13, by Ed Halpin, about LED dash lights, so I decided to try them. My directional lights and gen/oil lights were bright enough, but the hi/low beam and instrument cluster lights were hard for me to see. I ordered 2 blue lights for the instruments and red for hi/low beam, very easy to install and what a difference it made. They were inexpensive ($2.98 plus shipping). They come in colors amber, blue, red, green and clear. Distributed by Superbright LED Inc., St. Louis, Missouri, phone for literature and application chart. I also changed my flasher to a #224, due to the brite #1157 I am using, installed earlier. That made a big difference in a steady flashing directional. Do not use LED Lamps in variable headlight switch. Use a regular bulb only. The LED lamps are designed to be either on or off (not in a dimmer circuit). Any questions, call Ray Moore I m not sure if this really belongs here but it has an air cooled alternately placed engine that is most likely deafening. I wish I knew more about the photo so I could give photo or photo shopping credit. 4
