1 The Sandon School Newsletter 27 September 2018 SANDON RUGBY With more competitions and matches than ever before, Rugby has returned with a bang. The number of fixtures and tournaments mean training is essential for all year groups. Everyone is welcome to attend. Training after school. Year 7 training is Monday after school with Mr Ashley Year 8 training is Thursday after school with Mr Hull Year 9 training is Thursday after school with Mr Hull (this might have to change, I will keep you informed) Year 10 training is Tuesday after school with Mr Hull All years Girls training is Monday after school with Mr Hull Upcoming fixtures. Year 10 Essex Cup vs Westcliff HS Tuesday, 9 October. Year 7 and 8 Tournaments Held at St Martins Year 7 Tuesday, 16 October and Year 8 Thursday, 18 October Held at William de Ferrers Year 7 Tuesday, 6 November and Year 8 Thursday, 8 November Held at Great Baddow Year 7 Tuesday, 29 January 2019 and Year 8 Thursday, 31 January 2019 Held at Ormiston Year 7 Tuesday, 19 March 2019 and Year 8 Thursday, 21 March 2019 Safety First The RFU have developed online concussion resources which include a 30 minute online course explaining what concussion is, how it happens and what teachers, parents and guardians can do to help their players avoid injury or return safely to learning and playing following a concussion. Please follow the link to find out more. We also highly recommend all students have gum shields. The other question I m often asked is about high protection (scrum caps) : Headguard-Black The only problem I can see with making these compulsory is the fact that once wearing one it gives students a sense of it ll be fine, I ve got a scrum cap on when in reality they should not be placing their head there instead of using safe and correct technique. 2 MATCH REPORT Year 9 Rugby vs Baddow Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more. But when the blast of the whistle blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the rugby player; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd tackling; Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide, Hold hard the breath and step every defender. To his full height. On, on, you year 9. Have in these parts from morn till even fought, (kick off 3.30pm) And whose boots have stayed clean for lack of games: Whose limbs were made in England, show us here I see you stand like greyhounds in the backs, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: Follow your forward, and upon this charge Cry 'yes for Rugby, England, and Saint George!' Year 9 took control of the match from the start, running straight and hard at the Baddow line of defence; for the first 5 minutes they held firm. However, the continued attacks made by Sandon were constantly making ground. The breakthrough came with Nathan Dunston scoring after sustained pressure from the forwards had sucked in the defenders to allow space out wide. Monty Payne added two more points with the conversion. From then on Harry Parker and Monty Payne terrorised the Baddow backs, tackling hard, applying tons of pressure and seizing every fumbled pass they made. With this Joe Dawe scored twice, running past the disorganised defence after more good forward play. Monty added two more points and Sandon lead at half time The second half continued with more good play, Joe Sandle, Ollie Stephenson, Oliver Turton and Kade Silverman all running through defenders time and time again with Kade scoring the next try and Monty adding two further points. Kade added another soon after on the back of more great forward work. There was one more try from Joe D before the final whistle making the score The effort and commitment was excellent from everyone. Will Bowers led an outstanding defensive effort keeping the team organised in defence and Baddow to zero. At scrum half Toby Restall kept the momentum going forward with good ball and game management with his distribution between forwards and backs. In all an excellent effort by all and a well-deserved victory. Well done! Year 10 Rugby vs KEGS 25 September National Cup It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, the season of hope the winter of despair; we had KEGS before us in the first round of the National Cup. We knew KEGS were very strong and quick in their backs but we hopefully had the game plan to deal this danger. The game started positively with both sides playing well; it was always going to be close. After a lost ball, KEGS broke wide and scored the first try of the match, converting it to make it a seven point score. Sandon fought back with a great effort from the forwards, keeping the ball tight, going route one, resulting in Will Boyden scoring a well- deserved try. Each side continued to battle, with Sandon making ground only to be countered by KEGS then attacking wide and our backs forcing them back inside into a dead end. Something had to give and it was unfortunately us. KEGS scored a second try after a turn over, converting again. Sandon again fought back, Harrison Riley scoring under the posts just before half time. With Ollie Hollingworth converting, the score was at the break. (Continued)

3 The second half was an even closer fought affair, but with a few interesting decisions from the KEGS ref, frustration was growing. Then the KEGS back broke wide, but were forced into touch, however the ref didn t blow and we stopped allowing them to score under the posts. A bad call from the ref? Bad play from us for not playing to the whistle? Both? Either way it didn t matter - we needed to get back in the match, but time was not on our side, amongst many other things. The forwards responded well and Louis Cheek forced his way over to score. The conversion bounced off the cross bar and realisation set in that it was going to be one of those days. The final score The effort and team work were excellent, the plan executed well. We just came out on the wrong side of a very close game between two very good teams. Mr Hull ENGLISH AND MATHEMATICS YEAR 7 PARENTS INFORMATION EVENING Each year the Mathematics and English departments invite the parents of our new Year 7 pupils to take part in an evening presentation on How to help your child with maths and English. 80 parents attended this year s event on Thursday, 20 September, all keen to learn and listen carefully to any advice offered by Miss Flawn and Mrs Blackman, representing the Mathematics department, and Ms Henderson and Miss Cunniffe, representing the English department. It was very pleasing to see so many of our new parents taking a genuine interest in the education of their child. We are only too aware of how difficult it can be to synchronise many different events after a long day at work. Hopefully the information, tips and tricks of the trade, and educational philosophies shared went some way towards eliminating many of the myths surrounding education. The key strategies offered to help with mathematics were: Never tell you child that you were hopeless at maths and had a bad experience at school in you maths lessons. Try to help examples of work and methods can be found in the handout booklet Ensure your child knows their multiplication tables to 12x12 Try to help with homework if asked don t dismiss the request because the task involves maths! Take up the challenge is there something in your child s book that they could talk to you about, and then be applied to this task? The key strategies to help with English were: Reading research shows us that any form of reading is better than no reading at all the more the better. Conversation engage in asking open questions and new ideas to stimulate their interest it s all about thinking and talking ideas through. Discuss their accelerated reader books with your child. Comprehension can they read between the lines? Do they fully understand what they have read? Can they apply some of their new terms to their reading? Homework using the assessment focus, help and guide your child wherever possible. Any difficulties your child may face then the classroom teacher is the first port of call. Miss C Flawn Head of Maths
