1 The Sandon School Newsletter 22 February 2018 THE SANDON SCHOOL RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS ARTSMARK AWARD Students and staff at The Sandon School are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Gold Artsmark Award. Artsmark is Arts Council England s award for schools that champion the arts and strive for excellence. It celebrates school s that embrace the arts across the curriculum, bringing them to life for children and young people. In order to become an Artsmark school, The Sandon School had to develop their arts and culture provision to achieve a broad and balanced curriculum. This was achieved by creating an overall plan that was committed to and delivered across the whole school. The Panel which considered our submission made the following comments: The panel was very impressed by Sandon s firm commitment to excellence in arts provision and its inclusive ethos, exemplified in the Statement of Commitment and Case Study by its strong range of offer and the implementation of the Sandon Arts and Culture Map. As a result of its well-established partnerships with arts organisations and high quality accommodation and facilities, Sandon has clearly begun to establish itself as a beacon school for the arts in the area. As the reach of Sandon s advocacy and influence deepens over time, the school is in a very strong position to achieve Platinum level. Congratulations on your Artsmark Gold Award! On receiving the award, Head of Performing Arts, Heather Davis, said We are absolutely delighted to hear that our quality Arts & Cultural work has been recognised at Gold standard! Our journey has been a rewarding one and the staff and students at The Sandon School deserve the utmost praise for the exceptional work they do every day to promote a culture of creativity and arts excellence at every opportunity. Our remit now as an Artsmark Beacon School in Essex is to continue to reach out to partner schools and share best practice arts education with them." 2 ESU SCHOOLS PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION On Thursday, 18 January, two teams from the Sandon School Debate team (Jacob McVaddy, Faith Blake, and Adam Finn; Matthew Sokhi, Terry Thurnell, and Madison Bellamy) competed at the ESU Schools Public Speaking competition at New Hall school. The competition was a resounding success for everyone; one of our teams qualified to the next stage and was awarded original Winston Churchill crown coins for their impressive performance in debating the motion, Does Google live up to its motto, Don t be evil?. Furthermore, Jacob McVaddy was awarded the Best Personality accolade for his speech which pondered the question, Have our leaders lost touch with the people?, and Faith Blake was awarded Best Questioner for the second year running. On Monday, 5 February, the winning team (Matthew Sokhi, Terry Thurnell, and Madison Bellamy) competed in the second stage of the debate. Unfortunately, they did not qualify, however, they represented all the comprehensive schools in Chelmsford and Colchester as the only comprehensive school in the group. These debates, no matter what the success, have really helped us nourish and refine our research, critical thinking and public speaking skills, all of which will serve us well both in and beyond the classroom. Congratulations and thank you to the competitors for their commitment, hard work and enthusiasm in representing our school in these debates. Miss Cunniffe would also like to thank the members of the debating club who helped prepare the competitors, as well as for their continued support of and commitment to the debating club. Jack Dean Debate Team member ATTENDANCE POLICY UPDATE In order to help us ensure we know the whereabouts of our students, the Attendance Policy has been updated to clarify the procedure when a child is off sick. Clause 14 now reads: Parents are responsible for immediately informing the school of the reason for any absence by telephone call on the first morning of any absence. Please also advise the school on each subsequent day of absence or advise us of the date you expect your child to return to school. Reasons for absence should be confirmed in writing, by a parent, when their child returns to school. If this does not occur absences will be recorded as unauthorised. 3 HUGE ATHLETICS SUCCESS FOR MAISIE FULKER Congratulations to Maisie Fulker, who competed in the Essex County Championships and the Eastern County AA Championships at Lee Valley earlier this month. She won four silver medals in total and that was with a slight injury. Maisie was competing against some tough competition. We are looking forward to having her as part of our athletics team in the summer. She is already a member of the netball team, plays football, attends running and trampolining clubs. Her G&T badge was certainly well deserved. Well done Maisie, keep up the good work. Medals Won Essex County Championships silver in Long Jump Eastern County Championships silver in Long Jump Essex County Championships silver in Shot Putt Eastern County Championships silver in Shot Putt June Allen Head of Girls PE ALUMNI DRAMA STUDENT SUCCESS FOR HOLLY HOSTLER WHITE It's lovely to be able to celebrate the continued success of past students, many of whom are forging exciting career paths in the Performing Arts Industry. Holly Hostler White took part in numerous drama clubs and productions whilst at Sandon and she was a fabulous Bohemian in our amazing 2011 production of We Will Rock You. Having completed her A level Drama and Theatre Studies here at Sandon, she then went on to graduate from Arts Educational Schools London s Excelerate Acting course in March She is now a founding member of the Essex based improvisational comedy Troupe, Lady Inconvenience, and recently started her own Theatre Production Company Yellow Beetle Productions. We are delighted to share with you that Songs For a New World is her first production (Holly's both producing and acting in the show). Holly also teaches Drama under her own production company name and with Roar Edge Productions. Finally, Holly is also doing some exciting work with a couple of You tubers as an actor in their sketches. 4 PETER PAN (The Panto!) Just before half term the Drama Department was very busy putting on an exciting pantomime of the much loved J M Barrie classic, Peter Pan. With a large cast and stage crew the studio was filled to the brim with excited audiences for two consecutive nights. The audience enjoyed Pantomime traditions such as call and response, slap stick comedy, chase scenes, a 'skin part' (namely the crocodile) and audience participation songs. Much to our delight the strong cast, led by Lucy Hilton as Dame Tiger Lily and James King as Smee, gave superb performances and we have received a wealth of feedback and s of congratulations. Thank you to all the parents and friends who took the trouble to write, it means a lot to the staff and student team. Other notable performances were from Finley Nathan who gave a dynamic rendition of Peter Pan, together with a sweet Wendy played by Isabelle Partridge who delighted us with a beautiful version of 'Hushabye Mountain'. Tinkerbelle played by Charlotte Golden had just the right amount of 'sass!' for the part and sang a wonderful solo of 'On my Own' from Les Miserables. Finally, Hook was played brilliantly by Bertie Lambert who worked the audience up into a frenzy as he sent the Lost Boys to their doom whilst strutting his stuff to 'Another One Bites the Dust!'. To the whole cast and crew, thank you for your tremendous performance and sense of fun. The quality achieved was a real testament to the continued high standards of Performing Arts productions we have achieved in recent years. Gold Standard indeed! Well done! Mrs Davis Director Here is some of our audience feedback: Mrs Davis, Staff, young Actors and Actresses, Tec Crew and all involved in the production of Peter Pan, We were lucky enough to attend the performance of Peter Pan on Wednesday evening and we would like to congratulate every one Involved with the fantastic pantomime. Having two grandchildren in the play we know how much hard work went into this production. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and we could all see how much fun the children were having; the audience participation was great as well. (Oh yes it was!!!!) Well done to you all Sylvia and David Taylor

5 CHARITY EVENT On Tuesday, 20 February, the year 11 Business group ran a charity event during which we shaved Dylan Schrieber s hair for the Little Princess Trust. This is a charity where you can donate hair (and money) and they will make it into wigs for children who have lost their hair due to illnesses and treatments. First of all we put Dylan s hair into plaits to cut off and donate to the charity and then the rest of the hair was shaved off by Mr Robin. Then Mr Robin also volunteered to shave his head to raise extra money for the trust! During the assembly we managed to raise 133, with extra donations still to come, and on Dylan s Just Giving page he has so far raised an amazing 710. 6 OPEN TO ALL AGES JUST COME AND HAVE FUN! The Sandon Community Choir is expanding! After a successful year and a half we are opening our doors on every 2 nd and 4 th Monday of each month. We still operate out of Sandon Church Hall and want to invite new members to come and join us. No previous experience is necessary just a love of singing all sorts of different songs.
