The Sandon School Newsletter 8 February 2018 JOHN WHITTINGDALE VISIT TO SANDON For years there have been calls to help engage more young people in politics, with the youth turnout consistently being extraordinarily lower than any other age group. However, our school seems to be bucking the trend. Political debate can be heard throughout the common room, classrooms and school corridors. The perfect opportunity for students to illustrate this passion was on 3 February form students attended a Q and A session with the local Member of Parliament, John Whittingdale. The MP for Maldon has a longstanding political career, working alongside Margaret Thatcher in the late 1980s before becoming an MP in However, Sandon only came under his constituency in 1997 due to the boundary changes. Since then he worked in David Cameron s Cabinet (as Culture Secretary) and during this time was a prominent campaigner for Britain to leave the European Union. Students from both year 12 and 13, across the political spectrum, had the opportunity to ask an array of questions to our local MP. These questions covered the economic impact of Trump s presidency, to feminism in the 21 st century, Jacob Rees-Mogg as a potential Prime Minister, the number of people attending university, legalisation of marijuana and the Carillion crisis and the almost inevitable question on Brexit negotiations. After engaging in conversation, perhaps occasionally ensuing into a debate, Mr Whittingdale asked the students two questions of his own: firstly, whether or not many people in the room would like to become even more involved in politics - around half of the room agreed they would - and secondly, whether or not people under 18 should be able to vote, which was resoundingly rejected. It was a pleasure and honour for me to help organise the event. It was an opportunity for me to increase my own involvement in politics whilst also helping to engage other young people. However, it was also an opportunity for John Whittingdale to understand the views of so many young people in his constituency and to visit the Sandon School for the first time in over a decade. I hope that it was useful for everyone involved and I am extremely grateful to Mrs Newman for her help and support in making it a success. Jack Walters, Year 13

Dear Parents/Carers You may be aware that on Thursday and Friday last week the Governing Board conducted the interview process for our new Headteacher, to take over when Mr Wincott retires at the end of August. We received 26 applications for the position and shortlisted six for interview and we were commended by external advisers for a robust and rigorous selection process. Late on Friday evening the Governing Board agreed to appoint Andy Weaver as our new headteacher with effect from 1 September As many of you will know, Mr Weaver is currently a deputy head at The Sandon School and has a long and successful association with the school. I am delighted to advise you that we have now offered Mr Weaver the post and he has accepted that offer. By making the appointment now we are able to ensure a seamless transition to our new headteacher. Yours sincerely Mrs A Whelpdale Chair of Governors POSTAGE STAMPS Don t forget to bring your used postage stamps in to the ATLAS Centre. Please leave a border of approximately 1cm of envelope around the stamps. Stamps are sent to the Royal National Institute of Blind People who use them to raise valuable funds to support blind and partially sighted people. Thank you

VEGAN PASTA Vegan pasta is now available at lunchtime daily but needs to be ordered via the Catering Manager by breaktime. Mrs Bayley REMINDER FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT A polite reminder that students need to get changed for all PE lessons, even if they have a note excusing them from the lesson. Students not participating physically will be expected to umpire, officiate or help to coach other students in the lesson. Students wearing casts for broken bones will not be expected to get changed. PE Department ROYAL OPERA HOUSE VISIT On Friday, 2 February we took 42 students who have an interest in dance to see the Royal Ballet perform Giselle at a special children s matinée. This was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Royal Opera House and we were fortunate to have orchestra stalls seats which gave us an amazing close up view of the ballet. The quality of the set, costumes and props enhanced the exquisite ballet which the students loved. Giselle was indeed a beautiful piece of storytelling through dance accompanied by the wonderful orchestra. We hope the students experience of this ballet will further inspire them with their dance performance skills. In terms of Artsmark this trip is an example of offering students an opportunity to experience a high profile cultural treasure. Mrs H Davis CTL Performing Arts ATTENDANCE The Sandon School aims to encourage and assist all students to achieve good attendance and punctuality in order that they may take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. The Sandon School expects students to attend school for all timetabled lessons, on time, properly equipped and ready to learn. Parents will be routinely informed of their child s attendance regardless of the reasons provided. NON PUPIL DAY The next non-pupil day will be Friday, 9 March 2018.

SANDON PE DEPARTMENT WORKING WITH ESSEX UNIVERSITIES HUMAN PERFORMANCE UNIT Year 11 and Year 12 visit Essex Universities Human Performance Unit On Wednesday, 10 January Year 11 students who are considering undertaking A Level PE and Year 12 A Level PE students visited Essex Universities Human Performance Unit. Whilst there, students completed various fitness tests, learned about the importance of VO2Max to sports performance and had a full tour of the facilities and university campus. Students had the chance to learn more about life at university including learning about entry requirements and the types of courses available within sport. Essex Universities Human Performance Unit visit A Level PE students On Thursday, 25 January a Sports Scientist visited our A Level PE students in order to carry out a multi stage fitness test and educate them on how to use respiratory data to predict fitness levels. All A Level PE students completed a bleep test with heart rate monitors on and Imogen Payne (Year 12) completed the test with a 12,000 gas analyser attached to her face! Once students completed the tests, they had a chance to analyse their fitness data and compare to data produced by elite athletes. Students also had the chance to learn more about applying for university courses and had the opportunity to ask questions about sports science at Essex. Mr Sutton

RUGBY NEWS YEAR 7 RUGBY TOURNAMENT 30 JANUARY 2018 It was a bright but crisp Tuesday afternoon, the air still cold despite the January sun. The Year 7 team arrived at Chelmsford RFC with renewed confidence after training hard and learning from the defeats of the previous tournament. Their determination was clear and evident and their first match was against a well drilled Shenfield team. The Sandon boys demonstrated their teamwork and organisation in defence shutting down Shenfield s attacks with a solid line of tackles. In attack, Sandon rucked well and retained possession, setting up a series of attacks which was finished by Seb Dupee in the corner for the first try. Sandon remained in control with Ellis Devereux scoring twice to make the final score 15-5 to Sandon. In the second match Year 7 faced St John Payne. This proved to be an epic battle with the Sandon forwards lead by Nathan Howe and Daniel Nice, both whom played exceptionally well taking the fight to St John Payne. However, SJP found a space out wide and scored with a second soon after. Sandon heads never went down and the boys simply fought harder. Their efforts were rewarded with Chris Berry scoring a quick pick and go from a ruck and then Ellis Devereux, running wide through a stretched defence to score a second. SJP once again struck back with a strong sustained forward push, eventually getting over our line. The rest of the game was just relentless Sandon pressure. Sandon carried the ball twice over the try line, once through Daniel Nice and once again through Morris Lambert only in both instances to have the ball knocked out of their hands in valiant last ditch tackles by SJP. It looked as if the boys would go unrewarded for their efforts. However, in the last play of the match, the ball was passed wide and with an angle to the corner, Ellis Devereux dived over the line to level the score (final score 15 all). Sandon s next match was against a feisty Ormiston Rivers. The match was easily controlled by Sandon and the constant pressure soon resulted in another sniping try for Chris Berry. The forwards pushed on disrupting the Ormiston defence and allowing Ben Ferrier to score four tries with some great, strong, straight running. Lucas Alberson narrowly missed out on scoring a couple of tries by being pushed into touch by Ormiston s last defender each time. On the final whistle, Sandon were comfortable winners: Sandon s fourth and final game against Plume was cancelled due to an injury sustained by a Plume player in a previous game, meaning that they had to return to school. Sandon were given the victory in their absence. To finish, I would like to congratulate the Year 7 boys for their commitment, attitude and determination to improve. An excellent tournament, three wins, one draw; well done all! I would also like to thank the parents who have helped and supported throughout the season. YEAR 8 RUGBY TOURNAMENT - 1 FEBRUARY 2018 Year 8 arrived at Coronation Park walking out over the cold, muddy expanse to the central pitch. The team were confident but aware of the challenge that lay ahead. Their first encounter came in the form of William De Ferrers. Sandon started well, playing the better rugby and controlling the game, the forwards supporting each other and recycling the ball with great rucking. However, it was WDF that scored first against the run of play, capitalising on a loose ball. The Sandon team remained focused and unflustered by this; they had the game plan and skill to fight back. The response was swift and decisive with Joe Dawe flying through to score Sandon s first try. This was soon followed by another strong and direct run from Monty Payne cutting open the WDF defence to score a well-deserved try. The rest of the game turned into a much closer affair after two Sandon players picked up injuries. WDF scored again only for Sandon to strike back moments later. At the game was still not over, but a great break from inside his own half saw Joe Dawe score to give Sandon a slender cushion. The final score 25-15, but with two players unfortunately ill and off school and now two injuries, the team had no more subs.

A game against St Martins was, on paper, going to be the hardest as they finished runners up in the previous tournament. However, a fighting display and great defence saw Sandon emerge 20-5 winners with three more tries to Joe Dawe and one to Nathan Dunston sealing a welldeserved victory. It was during this game that Sandon lost another player to injury, the hard tackling scrum half Will Bowers. This meant Sandon were now unable to even field a full team. The final match against Shenfield was going to be tough even with a full squad! Now it was not so much an up-hill struggle but more a vertical climb. Shenfield were in great form and, with some blistering runners, were soon ahead. Their quick hands and strong forwards took advantage of spaces in a stretched Sandon defence then, with strong powerful runs, drove over the line. Despite valiant tackling, Sandon were continually pushed back. It was at this point, under immense pressure, that a number of individuals really stood tall. A determined and passionate attitude to never back down or give up had to be admired. The final score was 45-0 to Shenfield and our team were devastated to lose like this. It is now time to put this into perspective, as I know the boys were completely gutted! This is Year 8 s only defeat in three tournaments and a massive improvement from last year. Training will continue on Thursdays, as we rise to a new challenge. I am confident that with the talent and character displayed so far this year, this team will continue to do well. I would also like to add my thanks to all the parents who have helped and supported me and the team throughout the season it really is appreciated. YEAR 9 MESSSA RUGBY VS MOULSHAM Arriving at Moulsham, Year 9 were confident and upbeat, despite the cold. With an agreed kickoff of 3.40 pm, Sandon were ready to go at 3.30 pm. It was a pity Moulsham was not. Finally, at 4.10 pm the match started. Sandon took immediate control. Constant pressure, with strong running and good distribution from Jim Iliffe playing scrum half, meant Sandon punched holes in the Moulsham defence and then spread the ball wide, coming close to scoring on the left wing. Moulsham defended well on their 10 yard line, but Ollie Hollingsworth charged over the line only to have it disallowed. Sandon continued with the pressure and eventually got their reward with Ollie charging over the line to score, this time without any doubt. Moulsham kicked off, the ball was caught by Tristan Koch who burst through and scored a great solo try. Another welldeserved quick try by Will Broadrick soon followed with some excellent passing from the backs. Two more tries from Gerrard Sedeno and Terry Catchpole saw Sandon finish the half 25-0 up. The plan for the second half was to find a format to keep Moulsham to 0. However, like the best laid plans, it went wrong straightaway. Moulsham received the kick off, ran wide and kept going, scoring their only try of the game. This shocked Sandon into action and normal service resumed. Three excellent tries from Tristan Koch and then possibly the best try ever scored by this team saw the team all running and supporting each other, off-loading the ball phase after phase from one end of the pitch to the other, with Joshua Neal finishing under the posts. Along with the nine tries, Terry Catchpole kicked five conversions and Ollie Hollingsworth kicked three, making the final score Well done all on a great performance! As always, thanks to those parents who have helped and supported us this season. Mr Hull
