St. Kilda CBC won their fourth >uccessive game, beating Collegians by nine points, and are now only one game outside the four. Old Scotch trounced Old Paradians, who hold fourth place only on percentage from Geelong. They're certainly consistent in C Section! The five home teams won ~i fortnight ago and last week the five visitors won - and it was the same five teams. To add to the coincidence - the same thing happened in the Reserves. Perhaps a computer could work out the odds against this rather remarkable occurrence. These teams are the top five in both Senior and Reserve sections but are not in the same order in both sections - that would be just too much!! Old Xaverians, after winning the first seven games, have lost the last two - they were thrashed by Assumption last week, after going down to AJAX the previous week, but they're still second on the list. With half the season gone, and each team having met all its opponents, only six remain undefeated - Old Haileybury, AJAX, West Brunswick, North Old Boys Juniors, Thomastown Juniors and West Brunswick Reserves. North Old Boys are leaders in A Section and Junior Section 1, Old Scotch are on top in B and B Reserves, St. Kevin's head E and E Reserves and West Brunswick Seniors and Reserves are at the top of their sections. But I think the stewards should be called in to look at Old Xav's and Assumption and who would have picked Old Brighton. Which makes todays choice even harder. No, AJAX I never did indicate that you were a one-man team, I merely quoted a statistic on a player who is averaging more than your team average of 25 kicks a game. Please give him credit when it's due. Tread warily however - you are still undefeated but its a long way to go before you can claim to be "Champions and Premiers". Old Brighton provided a turn up last week but even with this improved form I can't see them troubling AJAX. Assumption, with second place the coveted stakes, will not allow this chance to slip against Old Camberwell today. Inconsistency is Assumption's biggest danger. Elsternwick will strengthen its "four" chances by holding back National Bank while hopefully to my predictions Old Xaverians, on their last chance, can pull themselves out of the doldrums and account for Brunswick. I say this with no great confidence, comparative form in recent weeks is that both have played AJAX with demoralising effects. Old Geelong provide another riddle. "Nugget" can probably tell me. Did they consider Old Brighton an "easy call" and declare last week an "alpine weekend"? If not, why the form reversal? Today they play State Bank. This is a really tough one - two points apart on the ladder and unpredictable from week to week. A tipsters nightmare but because June is traditionally a difficult month for Old Geelong, I'll lean towards State Bank playing on its home ground. F SECTIO N Well it just goes to show you that the pen is mightier than the sword, La Trobe Reds proved this last week by downing Bulleen- Templestowe. Mind you they did their sums and discovered that the least number of scoring shots can win games providing they go in the right direction. This week will see St. Bede's start on the right foot (?) for the second round by downing Bulleen- United. La Trobe Reds and Footscray I.T. will be an interesting game ; as I said last week Footscray usually prove me wrong but I will persevere and give them the nod. Beverley Hills at home will win over Thornbury but only becaus e they are at home. Page 8 Bulleen-Templestowe face the Uni boys for the second time in two weeks but this time they will have the measure over Uni Re,-is. I have a soft patch for Glenroy but it does not do them much good and certainly this week they would need both Alan Jeans and Kevin Rose to mastermind- a will over West Brunswick (mind you you won't get me down at St Baths at 7.00 a. JUNIOR SECTION 1 This tipping business is pro v ing to be more difficult each week in this Section. Nevertheless, this is not a game for excuses, and points are only obtained by good performances. I only hope that my second half will be much better than the first. Monash University meet Old Scotch at home and should have an easy win, even though Scotch are a hard team to predict - a draw with Ivanhoe and then beaten by Hampton Rovers. Hampton Rovers are at home to Ormond but despite the confidence gained from last week's victory will not be strong enough to win. Power House were the improvers of the Section until they collapsed against Ivanhoe last week. They should be able to regain their confidence today by beating University Blacks, particularly if Graig gets amongst the goals again. North Old Boys still undefeated, meet University Blues who are third on percentage. The Blues were unable to beat second team Monash last week and will not be able to match North's overall strength today. The battle of the district sides takes place at Coburg. This is a must for Coburg if they are to be considered as a finals prospect. The win put Caulfield on top of "A" Section,cith 8 wins, while five teams were level in second place. St. Bernard's stalwart Peter Nathan battled his way to 100 games with the club. One of the founders of the club, naugural secretary, and a member of St. Bernard's first reserves premiership side n 1963, Peter came back, after a nasty accident in 1969 which badly impaired the sight of one eye, to achieve the elusive silver pewter. (Peter is now a n ember of the V.A.F.A. Elsternwick (D Section) set a new club record by being undefeated after the first round. A Tribute to John Sothera n Old Brighton Grammarians mourns the recent death of club delegate John Sotheran. John has been an active worker and club supporter for many years and has represented the club as its delegate to the V.A.F.A. and was a member of the Umpire committee. In these capacities, John worked energetically on the club's behalf and took an active part in the administration of Amateur football. 14 T_ JACK FULLERTON Secretary for 25 Years It is almost 25 years since JACK FULLERTON became Secretary of the Victoriant Amateur Football Association, and the Association has made great strides in that time. Jack has devoted more than 40 years to football, his first real achieve., ment in the football world going back as far as 1933, when he represented Victoria in the Interstate Schoolboys Carnival. He played with Collingwood Seconds for two seasons, 1935 and 1936, and still has a great love for his old club. Then he journeyed to the country and played with Horsham in the Wimmera League in 1937 before returning to Melbourne in Jack played all his football as an amateur, but after the war he gave up playing and started "blowing the whistle". He umpired in the Metropolitan Football League in 1945 before joining the V.F.L. the following year. Although on the senior list, he did most of his umpiring in the major country leagues - Ballarat, Bendigo, Ovens and Murray. He continued as an umpire until 1951, and was appointed Secretary of the V.A.F.A. in September of that year. Jack has seen many changes since he took over the secretarial reins - in 1951 there were 40 teams competing - this season there are 140. The Junior Section was formed in 1939 as a separate body - the Victorian Junior Amateur Football Association-and operated as such until it was merged with the V.A.F.A. in 1953 and became the Junior Section of the parent body. Then there was E Section, the Reserves and F Section, as the Association continued to grow. Jack was Manager of the Victorian team in 1953 which boasted many very fine players, and literally "scooped the pool" at the Amateur Carnival at Adelaide. Another feat of which he is Page 28 JACK FULLERTON justly proud was the organisation of the demonstration match of Australian Rules football at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in He was also an assistant to Mr. Bill Holt, who was the Tech - nical Director for the Olympic Games. Jack had a good deal to do with the Association's acquiring Olympic Park No. 2 Oval as a central ground in The V.A.F.A. had the use of this ground until di, end of 1960, but the installation of the greyhound racing track made the playing area too small. His next triumph was the gain- THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JUNE 26, 1976 ing of St. Kilda Cricket Ground as }leadquarters in 1965, but this, too, was to be short-lived as we had that ground for only one season. But the Fullerton determination was not dimmed by these setbacks and Jack did much of the negotiating for the use of Elstern- ~irick Park, which we gained in Much has been done to improve the facilities at this ground, which we now call "home" and further improvements will be carried out on a gradual scale. Something more we can thank Jack for - it was his drive, enthusiasm and persistence which has played a big part in getting these things done. Jack received the A.N.F.C. Merit Award in 1968 (the V.A.F.A., one of the four bodies affiliated with the Australian Amateur Football Council, is entitled to make a nomination for this award every fourth ~-ear). He was also honoured by being elected President of the A.A.F.C. in Jack was instrumental in obtaining the use of the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Amateur Carnivals in 1962 and 1973, just another achievement in the tremendous amount he has done for Amateur football in Victoria. BUT - Jack freely admits that none of it would have been possible without the help and co-operation of his wife, Mrs. Norma Fullerton, who has been Assistant Secretary of the V.A.F.A. for the whole of the time that Jack has been Secretary. And the members of the Association think very highly of the Fullertons, for they have both been elected to Life Membership of the V.A.F.A. While Jack and Norma Fullerton are on deck the Victorian Amateur Football Association is certain to flourish. Ray was "Shepherded" back to R.O.B.'s Ray Shepherd, Reservoir Old Boys' centre line player, stands at only 5' 8", but his lack of inches in no way measures his football ability. Ray, who has just turn ed 21, has proved his ability and versatility since joining Reservoir in He has played in the centre, on includes squash and athletics the wing, and even as ruck-rover, among his other sporting activibut he is hardly the build for this ties, latter position, as he weighs only 12 stone. He won the Best First Year Player award in 1972 and was second Best and Fairest the following year. In 1974, Ray tried his luck with Collingwood (V.F.L.) and played in the Under-19's and the Reserves, but couldn't "crack" the senior side. He was back with Reservoir Old Boys last season and is in the squad for next month's Carnival at Adelaide.
