By GEORGE McTAGGART North Old Boys finished much too strongly for De La Salle in last Saturday's Second Semi-final, and the win puts them into their third successive Grand Final They were runners-up to St Bernard's in 1975 and beat that side for the premiership last season Old Scotch beat Reservoir Old Boys in the B Section Second Semi-final and have at long last won their way back into the top section, after a long spell in B Section Parkside, Old Brighton, West Brunswick and Bulleen-Templestowe who won the Finals in their respective sections, gained promotion to a higher grade in 1978, and Geelong, winners of the Junior Section 2 Final, will play in Section 1 next season Neither De La Salle nor North took advantage of the fairly strong breeze in the first half, and at the interval the difference was only two points, in favour of De La Salle North, who held their opponents well in the first quarter, looked to be gradually gaining the upper hand late in the second term when they edged away to a 10-point lead, but "De La" hit back with 2 quick goals just before half-time to take the lead again But the third quarter belonged to North They were able to open up the game, which had been rather scrambly in the first half, and the standard of play improved North started the last term a point in front, but a quick goal by De La Salle gave them the lead again Then North unwound a strong finishing burst and rattled on 6 goals to score a decisive 35-point win Old Scotch gained an early lead over Reservoir Old Boys, and led throughout, but they tired in the last quarter as Reservoir made a determined bid for victory Scotch's "score on the board" stood them in good stead, however, and they held on to win by 27 points Parkside made better use of their opportunities on the forward line to beat AJAX by 15 points - each side having the same number of scoring shots So Parkside gain promotion after finishing in fourth position on the ladder, and there only on percentage Another "double chance" side in St Kevin's also failed to gain promotion, when they crashed badly against Old Brighton, who won by nearly 10 goals West Brunswick, who kicked themselves out of it in the Second Semifinal, made the most of their second chance by scoring a 15-point win over North Brunswick Bulleen-Templestowe, overwhelmed by St Bede's in the Semi-final, qualified for another "crack" at them with a 5-goal win over Thornbury Top Junior side, Ivanhoe, who lost only one home-and-home match, but went down by a goal to St Bernard's in the Semi-final, beat North Old Boy s Page 2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - September 10, 1977 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - September 10, 1977 Page 3

3 by a similar margin in the Final But they nearly kicked themselve s out of the running, scoring 1-8 in the first quarter, and finishing with 9-21 North were also off the target, with 9-15 Geelong' straighter kicking gave them a 7-point win over De La Salle (14-7 to 12-12) In the Reserves, University Blacks beat De La Salle by 4 points, the same margin by which St: Bede's beat Commonwealth Bank Beverley Hills beat West Brunswick by 10 points, but Ivanhoe, Hampton Rovers and Old Brighton won their matches by comfortable margins IMPORTANT NOTES "Herald" Phone Numbers You may dial DIRECT to the Amateur Football representative at the "Herald" office The numbers are: or If you have any difficulty, you may ring 63-0? 1 1 and ask for EXTENSION 1892 or 1893 RESERVE SECTION RESULTS to be phoned t o Same numbers BEFORE 3 p m When phoning scores, please state firstly the Section, the teams concerned, and then the winners, before giving the actual Scores Notifying "Herald" of finals scores is responsibility of WINNING Club PRESS CORRESPONDENT The phone number of the Press Correspondent, George MeTaggart, is now EMERGENCY UMPIRES - Ring (Elsternwick Park) and ask for an Umpire The A B C Sporting Session from 3LO each Friday ( which commences at 630 pm ), wi ll include a preview of the following days amateur matches Page 4 PREVIEWING TODAIrS GAMES A SECTIO N Ever-green, LES MURRAY may still be the difference between a North double flag and perhaps a St Bernard's or De La revival And the form of North last Saturday certainly was indicative to its all-round consistency throughout the year But while North would appear the hottest "A" Section favourite for years, the flag still has to be won and not without some spirited "Irish" resistance The accuracy of the Sit Bernard's forward line paved the way for that side's dedicated return ito premiership calculations a fortnight ago With many big names injured the responsibility has men arrested by an enthusiastic bunch of youngsters and this development must not be underrated Henry Nadzielski and Mick Powell, are most promising forwards and their lack of experience is offset by their ability, and they are enthused by the tremendous personal effect skipper Greg Wade has on his side together with co-state player Peter Rackham Last year, St Bernard's beat De La Salle, by a marginal number of points In the dying stages of a most exciting Preliminary Final Can history repeat itself? Barry Lyons, De La Salle's stalwart skipper, is perhaps "under a cloud" and this to my mind becomes a paramount consideration in assessing that team's immediate future Rover Terry Crothers is certainly a key and if Sit, Bernard's let him "off the hook" he could itear their backline apart Peter McDonnell is in dashing form in the De La Salle defence and he will provide plenty of resistance to any St Bernard's forward maneouvres Mick Bourke, Richie Halasa and Brian Bourke are tried performers and they comprise part of the well blended all-round evenness of this De La Salle Sine-up Its interesting to note the years perform- 'ances of both teams - De La Salle 14 wins from 19 starts and Sit Bernard's have 13 from the same number of starts Can St Bernard's level the score? I'll take St Bernard's because of NLitchell's proven finals record SELECTION - St Bernard's - JIM FIDGE B SECTION Well done Scotch, you've bought your ticket to 'A' Section and can now sit back and watch with interest, Ivanhoe and Reservoir Old Boys wage a war of attrition for the right to order a flag, and accompany you into the silk department THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - September 10, 1977 Despite three =losses this season to Old Scotch, I earnestly believe that Reservoir are in this prelim7nary final with a big chance They have split the results so fat with Ivanhoe and both games have resulted in tight finishes Neither side can claim an advantage on each :other in the high marking, long kicking game, but they both are well endowed with mobility and slick disposal Every square inch of the big Collingwood ground will be used by Charlie Stredwick and Chris Stewart of Ivanhoe and the equally pacy and talented Ray Shepherd and Jim IIorne of Reservoir Both teams are directed by very shrewd coaches It is here I see an advantage for Reservoir's Barry Evans who does not have the added problem of picking up the odd kick, atask which will keep Ivanhoe's Bill McWhinnie quite busy, thank you It will be a top game, worth going any distance to see Whilst the result is almost certain to be a cliff nanger, I can see Reservoir coming home the and extending the season by one more winners, week SELECTION - Reservoir Old Boys - ALF KEAM C SECTION Well done Parkside you've made the Grand Final and `B' Grade - maybe you've done it the hard way, and, with your tails up you could worry Fawkner Both!teams last week had equal 'scoring shots, however Parkside's straighter kicking put AJAX out of business 'Bad luck AJAX, you worked hard throughout the year I know!there is no consolation prize, however my congratulations on what I would term '9a good year ' Keep your players together and I'm sure you will be there again in 1978 Fawkner, a good finals side, will need to produce all their experience and knowhow today - Parkside have plenty of Finals up their sleeve but often fall to clinch the big one Another flag would be well deserved, but it's hard to see them tossing Fawkner, the season's 'top team Considering all aspects I'll go for Fawkner - by a whisker My Selection - Fawkner - ALEX JOHN- SON D SECTION Congratulations Alphington and Old Brighton in making the Grand Final this week and their promotion to "C" Section in 1978 Grand finalists are always difficult to select but I have the feeling that Alphington may have the edge on Old Brighton Whatever the result I am sure It will be a hard fought out match Best of luck to both sides Selection - Alphington - KEITH FIND- LAY E SECTIO N Not a great deal in last week's game, West v North, with West gaining promotion to D Section I have had a number of experiences with my mob having to saddle up for a second lash at winning the flag and sadly, never quite making it I've no doubt that West will give It all they have but Heatherton should have all factors summed up They had the opportunity of assessing the pros and cons last week and should win a close game SELECTION: Heatherton - SYD WHIT- FIELD JUNIOR SECTION 1 A great clash is expected today from the two sides, Ivanhoe and St Bern ard's, who have emerged as the most powerful and talented in this section Both sides are worthy contenders for the coveted premiership flag St Bernard's suffered two thrashings at,the hands of Ivanhoe during the season but were able to turn the!tables on them two weeks aga in the second semi-final and squeezed in by one goal It was a fine effort, full of determination and courage and some fine teamwork Ivanhoe have earned themselves great respect for possessing the same points but with the greater pressure that is exerted on all players during finals games they have not responded as well as they should have Last week Ivanhoe's forward line, which amassed an amazing total during the season, was way off target with only 9 goals from 30 scoring shots If the St Berna rd's backmen can exert the same intense pressure as they did at their last meeting and which North Old Boys did last week they could just abouit win this one too However, one of Ivanhoe's stronger points,is their backmen who always give their opponents e torrid time This will be; a great clash and I must stick to the most consistent side throughout the season and select Ivanhoe to win SELECTION~-- Ivanhoe - CLIFF BAS- TOW F SECTIO N The season's two strongest sides receive recognition today when they meet in the Grand Final Bu lleen Templestowe this season have emerged from the F Section wilderness where they have won only eight matches during their first two seasons in senior football They are a young club on the rise in the V A F A St Bede's who joined the V A F A in 19T2 have earned promotion back to E Section from whence they were relegated in 1975 St Bede's advertising indicates they view this sepson as the start of their rise to A Section They must realize this climb is cluttered by forty clubs all of whom have the same goal Good luck to St Bede's however for their public optimism, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - September 10, 1977 Page 5

4 In the three encounters this season St Bede's have emerged with the better record At hom on May 74 the Combine won by ten points despite inaccurate kicking At Beda Park on July 1 6 St Bedei's recorded a 46- point victory Two weeks ago they had 77 points to spare over the Combine as the final siren sounded in the Second Seimi-final- Patterns which emerge, from these games for today's deliberations, include the ruck dominance of Mick Roberts for St Bede's On each previous occasion the big fellow has ranked in their best Combine coach Barry Murphy will have to position himself to shark knock outs to try to nullify Roberts play Ali Bulleen-Templestowe supporters hope Barry will repeat last week's great game My spies tell me St Bede's defence was very :tight in the Semi Final Their half back line 'acted as a spring board for their attacking moveis The Combine forwards are not at their best when pressured into quick disposal Walker has proven his ability to goal against St Bede's Howeveir today I expect his +apportunyties to be limited Tenace and Craig Sheridan who have been prominent Combine forwards have not been table to score heavily against St Bede's on earlier occasions On the other hand St Bede's forwards led by Allen, Collins, and Turner have consistently goaled against the Combinq defenders Peter Fogarty, on a wing, has proven a problem during the season and today he can help St Be:de's have a winning centre line 'My research has prompted me to select St Bede's who seem to have had the measure of Bulleen-Templestowe during the sason I must be( truthful; had I stuck a pin into my Amateur Footballer I would have picked the Combine! Will logic or luck triumph? Selection: St Bede's - NORM NUGENT JUNIOR SECTION 2 Congratulations to Hampton Rovers an d Geelong on their promotion and also to all other clubs who earned promotion to a higher Section While the break "up North" was most enjoyable and relaxing, it is certainly great to be back home The frustrating part of the holiday was that you cannot get the main VA F A results until Monday lunchtime, when the Melbourne daily papers arrive Today's game should be a reat football spectacle, particularly as Gee%ng are improving at the right end of the season - a contrast to De La Salle, who started well but faded away Hampton lost only two games during the season, to Reservoir and De La, sides that have been beaten by Geelong in their two final games to date Hampton have the name players, with James and Cole dominating on the forward line and being the leading goal kickers in,this section They are ably assisted by Thompson who won the section fairest and best with a magnificent total of 34 points, second highest total for the whole association While Hampton may have considered their seniors unlucky, the real bad luck story rests with Geelong seniors, who are to be relegated from!b Section on percentage, after having won seven games, and actually being only three games out of the four No doubt coach Ken Larsen would feel happier if he had interstate representative Stephen Wells, who I am told is still a junior, in the line-up The shrewdness of Ken Larsen versus the cunning of Ron Wilson, coach of Hampton, poses as an interesting battle Will this be a case of a champion team beating a team of champions? 5 UMPIRES CORNE R Today we feature one of the hard-working but seldom praised officials of the VAFA, Peter Fell, who is the Secretary to the Umpire Committee Despite Peter's substantial responsibilities as the General Manager of the Southern Cross Hotel, he still somehow finds time to carry out his onerous duties as Secretary to the Umpire Committee Apant from attending regular meetings of this Comm Vtee, Peter co-ordinates the Saturday viewing :c t ivi;ties of the members of the CamMitcer: and also has the enormous task of preparing the umpire's appointmfnts It would be fair to say that the umpires have been more than satisfied with the manner in which the appointments have been made this year and for this Peter is to be congratulated This as especially so having regard to the difficulties that the Association has had in obtaining enough umpires virtually throughout the whole seasan Peter was an ideal choice for the position as Umpire Commiuee Secretary as he umpired for eleven ye,irs in the VAFA, umpiring a number of finals :id up to B grade matches in home and home games He has been a magnificent member of the VAFA Umpire's A5zsocdaftion and -was rewarded for this contribution with lifemembership in 1976 Peter first came to prominence when he accepted the position of Social Secretary of the Umpire's Association in 1973 He was then elected as Vice-President the following year and automatically acceded to the Presidency in 1975 He was an excellent President in a difficult year and his marvellous sense of humour and of responsibility are qualities for which Page 8 he is universally respected by clubs, officials and all umpires Peter is particlarly u well-known for his performances as master of ceremonies at the Umpires' Association Annual Dinners and anyone who has the pleasure of attending such functions will attest to his rapierlike wit and to his extraordinary musical talents Peter's greatest asset is his ability to dedicate himself absolutely to any job that he takes on A recent incident exemplifies this In the last home-and-home round Trevor Rowe severley injured his ankle 10 minutes into the first quartet of the Ormond v Coburg game, There were no emergency umpires left and it appeared that the game would be drawn and the points shared When Peter heard Of this he offered to umpire the game and in fact did so From all Teports he acquitted himself admirably and his efforts certainly appreciated by the players and officials of both clubs The umpires certainly hope that people of the calibre of Peter Fell are involved in the administration of the VAFA for many years to come, as the Association wi ll surely be the better for it A TON TO THE 'HUN ' Bill Schwarzenberg ~today plays his 100th game for St Bernard's Bill would have reached this goal some time ago but for many injuries, a few Tetirements and a couple of nndiscretions He has played in many positions on the back and forward lines and in the ruck and always gives his utmost for St Bernard's especially in the 'A' Reserves Premiership in 1975 Keep up the good work Bill All at St Bernard's wish you well TRIBUNAL S Pollard G(Buileen- empiesowe) was found guilty of striking M F Ladds (St Bede's O C ) and suspended for four matches J Beaumont (West Brunswick Reserves) was found guilty of striking N Ho pkins (Heatherton Reserves) and suspended for four matches THE BLACK LIST Missed Publication deadline (Seniors and Juniors 5 p m, Reserves 3 p m) -
