1 Sports Development- September Newsletter 2016 Couch to 5K is back! Welcome to our 6th St. Helens Couch to 5k programme! Managed and delivered by the Council's Sports Development Team as part of our Community Sport project - we want to support people to get active. Week 1 starts on Monday 26th September so come to a session during that week and start your journey! Sessions take place every Monday and Wednesday 6-7pm and Saturdays am, for 10 weeks. Perfect timing to get you in shape for Christmas! You can attend one session or all three sessions, it's up to you. Obviously the more you attend, the quicker you'll improve! IT S ALSO FREE! Rio Paralympics 2016- Well Done Team GB!

2 Rio Paralympics Well Done Team GB!! Great Britain closed the Rio Paralympics with 64 gold medals, the most by a British team since ParalympicsGB exceeded their London 2012 medal tally of 120 on day nine of the Games in Rio and finished with 147, second in the medal table behind China. The team's target - set by UK Sport - was 121 medals, which has been by far accomplished. They also matched the highest number of gold medal sports at a Paralympics with 11, matching China at Beijing This GB team has set a new standard and as one Games closes, plans for the next summer Games in Tokyo are well under way. Now the challenge will be to maintain momentum and rise to the occasion once again in 2020.

4 European Dragon Boat Championships Success! Four young people from St Helens have represented Great Britain in the European Championships held in Rome, Italy between 27 th 30 th July Olivia Lynan (16), Jess Johnson (19), Joe Johnson (20) and Sam Richardson (23) represented the under 18 s age category and the under 24 s age category for Great Britain. Jess, Joe and Sam won 3 Gold and 3 Bronze medals over 200 meters, 500 meters and 2,000 meter race distances in the under 24 open (fastest 10 paddlers) and mixed (fastest 6 males and fastest 4 females) squads. While Olivia won 3 Silver and 3 Bronze over the same race distances in the under 18 s mixed and the women s squad. These four young people are now in training for selection to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in China in 2017 with the continued support of the Gold Card program through Sports Development which offers free gym membership to council gyms for elite athletes who live in St Helens. 8 Under 13 s Training Sessions SAINTS' Performance and Community departments have announced details of the next U13 s training sessions held at Cowley Training Facility on Hard Lane in St Helens. All sessions are open access regardless of playing ability, playing experience or town you play your sport in! 9 Air Factory Trampoline Park The 1m attraction, which is for people of all ages, opens its doors on Monday 26 th September and for the first seven days will offer visitors the chance to jump for free. The arena is situated within a 21,000 sq. ft. former warehouse in Lea Green and will offer Olympic-sized trampolines; Gladiator-style jousting on battle beams, trampoline dodgeball, a huge foam pit, a ninja warrior course and a slam dunk court. For the 2016/17 season Pilkington will have an Under 18 s team for the first time since 1992! They are also looking for players over 35 for their veteran s team. Haydock Warriors Rugby Club If you are returning to High School at Year 8 in September, Community Club partners Haydock Warriors are on the lookout for new players. They currently play in the North West Counties U7 s-u12 s section with games resuming a week on Sunday. 11 School Games Update With the start of the new school year comes the return of the School Games programme of competitions. September sees a number of competitions including girls rugby union and both primary and secondary football, with winners of some competitions progressing through to represent St Helens in the Merseyside Winter Games Festival in early The last school year saw over 60 competitions provided for pupils in St Helens, providing over 4000 opportunities to take part in competitive sport. Almost every school in St Helens entered into at least one competition, with many schools entering multiple events throughout the year. This year, the School Games programme offers as wide a variety of sports as ever. Traditional sports such as Rounders and netball, modified versions including hockey quick sticks and touch rugby, and inclusive sports like boccia and new age kurling, the School Games offers the opportunities for pupils of all abilities to compete in opportunities at a level suitable for them. Despite only being 11 years old, Paisley, nicknamed 'Goldie Lox' impressed the judges to victory in the under 16s category for breakdancing to win her first world championship title.

13 Success at Street Dance World Championships! Dance sensation Paisley Kerswell has enjoyed her biggest success yet as she picked up a first and second-place at the UDO World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow. Despite only being 11 years old, Paisley, nicknamed 'Goldie Lox' impressed the judges to victory in the under 16s category for breakdancing to win her first world championship title. And to top it off, the former Eccleston Mere pupil also finished runner-up out of 70 competitors in the street dance competition. Congratulations Paisley!! Thatto Heath Ladies Congratulations to Thatto Heath Ladies who became the first-ever winners of the Lancashire Cup Final Last night, beating Leigh Miners Rangers at Twist Lane. The MVP award was given to Thatto Heath-St Helens' Katie-May Williams who proved crucial in both attack and defence throughout the game, making a remarkable last-minute tackle to prevent a potential Rangers try that would have levelled the scores. Well Done girls!!

14 England Women name Elite Player Squad CONGRATULATIONS TO RACHAEL WOOSEY! Rachael who is from St Helens originally played for West Park girls and has now progressed through England s age group teams and will this season focus on sevens having been awarded part-time, three-day-a-week contracts. England Women have announced the Elite Player Squad for the 2016/17 season, with 29 players awarded the first ever 15-a-side professional contracts. The 54-player squad is split into full-time, part-time, short-term and non-contracted players with 38 contracts awarded to date. Eight of the 12-player Team GB Olympic squad will return to the 15 s programme this season as England Women bid to retain the Women s Rugby World Cup which kicks off in Ireland in August These include Team GB captain Emily Scarratt alongside fellow 2014 World Cup winners and Olympians Claire Allan, Natasha Hunt, Katy Mclean and Danielle Waterman. England Women head coach Simon Middleton: "We are looking forward to an exciting season, and I would like to recognise and thank those employers who have supported and released players to take up these contracts and represent England."

18 Merseyside Sports Awards 2016 The Council s Sports Development Team is looking to nominate individuals and a club for the Merseyside Sports Partnership Sports Awards. The awards recognise individuals and organisations achievements between September 2015 and August Does your club or one of its members deserve being recognised for their achievements this year? If so don t leave it to someone else please nominate them? The process could not be easier, simply send an to; sportsdevelopment@sthelens.gov.uk by Monday 10 th October with the following information: 1. Who are you nominating? 2. Which category are you nominating them for? 3. Why are you nominating them? (Max 300 words) Sports Development will select one nomination for each category and submit this for the Merseyside Sports Awards which are being held on the evening of Friday 18th November at Aintree Race Course. The award categories are: Lifetime Achiever is there someone in your club who has dedicated their life to your sport or a number of sports, tell us about them, why they are special and what they have achieved. Coach of the Year tell us how many hours they coach each week and the level of performer they are coaching, do they mentor other coaches? Have they been responsible for increasing participation? What successes have their performers had in competition? Club of the Year tell us about you links to your governing body and how you work together, do you have links with schools or other organisations in the community. Are you accredited with all the relevant policies in place? Do you invest in coaching, volunteers and recruiting new members? Your information should focus on the last twelve months. Volunteer of the Year tell us about what they do, what it means to the club and the difference it s made. Young volunteer of the Year - do you have a young person aged between 14 and 19 in your club who is volunteering already; tell us about what they do, what it means to the club and the difference it s made.
