Seventeen of our St. Helens primary schools welcomed the new year in with a bang! Due to the large number of entries, both a morning and an afternoon session were planned to accommodate all of the schools. Both sessions were full of talent providing us with some of the closest and highest scores we have ever had. The closest of which took part in the morning session with both Rainford Brook Lodge and St Thomas of Canterbury finishing joint top of the pile with St Marys snapping at their heels. It seemed fitting that the two Star Performers of the morning came from the joint winners of the session, Rainford Brook Lodge s Sam and St Thomas of Canterbury s Maddie. It was also decided that Newton would receive the Fair Play Award during this session, an award that was picked by our volunteers for the day, the Edge Hill students. Onto the afternoon session for more close fought races and brilliant performances. In a very tight results table it was St Julies that managed to edge out St Bart holomews and St Ann s to the bronze medals but it was Bleak Hill and Rainford CE that ran away from the rest of the field to take the silver and gold medals respectively. Congratulations to all that took part and a big well done to Mia from Rainford CE (front crawl town record) and Harry from St Julies who were awarded the afternoon s Star Performers along with the Fair Play recipients Eccleston Mere. Turn over to find out the overall results and the two teams who qualified the Merseyside School Games Finals. Record Alert! Congratulations to Mia from Rainford CE for setting a new town record of seconds in the girls front crawl. Pg. 1

All schools played against each other in a round robin tournament with games officiate by the St Augustine s leaders. As the group stage started to unfold last years champions Eccleston Lane Ends began to emerge as the favourites. Chapel End, Rainhill St Ann s and St James were all closing the gap on the reigning champions. However, Eccleston Lane Ends managed to win all of their games making them back to back champions. The silver medallists were Chapel End and the bronze medallists, despite being a team of three, St Ann s. A big well done to all the schools and a further mention to Amy from Eccleston Lane Ends for taking home the Star Performer Award along with the Fair Play recipients St Ann s. Pg. 2
3 Y4 Highland Games Another popular event delivered across two sessions was this years Year 4 Highland Games in which pupils take part in eight events including the caber throw, the kiltie dash and highland steps. The morning session managed to get underway on time with all schools ready and raring to go. Twelve schools battled it out for the morning title and as the event started to draw to a close, the scores got closer and closer. With all the scores in, only 5 points separated the winners and the runners up and it was St Peters(1287 points) that managed to edge out Eccleston Lane Ends (1282 points) with Thatto heath taking home the bronze medals (1224 points). An additional well done to Bleak Hill who received the Fair Play Award. If you thought the scores from the morning session were close, the afternoon session was even closer, with some equally impressive performances emerging. Come the end of the day, only 1 point separated the top two teams and that 1 point advantage belonged to Garswood (1277 points). Just missing out on the title, but still claiming the silver medals was St James (1276 points), with Queens Park taking home the bronze (1078 points), just 2 points ahead of Haydock English Martyrs in 4th. Well done to all the schools involved and a special well done to St Aidan s, the recipients of the Fair Play Award in the afternoon session and to the amazing leaders from year 9 at St Augustine s. KS2 Seated Volleyball A brand new event on the School Games calendar was Seated Volleyball for KS2 pupils. Despite the new rules and malfunctioning beach balls, all of the participating schools took to it extremely well and after a bit of practice, were involved in some exciting games. Seven teams battled it out for qualification for the Merseyside School Games Finals. Having not lost a single game throughout the entire tournament, it was Broad Oak who took the first Seated Volleyball crown, closely followed by Legh Vale securing the silver and St James taking home the bronze medals. A big well done to everyone who took part in a very enjoyable afternoon and hopefully we will see this competition become a permanent fixture on the School Games calendar. Also after some incredible service games, Freddie from Broad Oak was chosen as our Star Performer of the competition which he was delighted with. A final thank you goes to the students from De La Salle, without their assistance throughout the afternoon the event would not have been able to go ahead. Pg. 3
4 School Games Qualifiers Queens Park & St Aidan s Green New Age Kurling (KS2) With the Winter Olympics well underway in Pyeongchang, pupils were more inspired than ever to take part in the annual KS2 New Age Kurling competition. Despite the lack of ice and brushes as in the Winter Olympics, the New Age Kurling equipment still enabled two great sessions of skill and accuracy. The morning session played host to ten schools all battling it out for that one spot in the Merseyside School Games Finals and after the group stages it was Queens Park, Bleak Hill, Willow Tree and the Federation of St Mary s Juniors who progressed into the semi finals. Queens Park and Bleak Hill both managed to negotiate the semi finals and a place in the gold medal match was their reward, leaving Willow Tree and the Federation of St Mary s Juniors to battle for the bronze medal. The gold medal match was probably the closest match of the morning going to a final stone tie break in which the Star Performer of the morning Ethan managed to hold his nerve to give Queens Park the title and the first spot in the Merseyside finals. Well done to Bleak Hill who were worthy runners up and Willow Tree who took home the bronze medals. An additional well done to Thatto Heath who were awarded the Fair Play Award. In the afternoon session, a further twelve teams attempted to take the second spot at the School Games Finals. After some very tight group matches, two of the groups going down to points difference to separate them with St Ann s, Legh Vale, St Aidan s Green and St Aidan s White progressing to the semi finals. Could it be the dream scenario for St Aidan s ensuring them a guaranteed title with at least one of their teams? It was! Both St Aidan s teams made it through to the gold medal match leaving St Ann s and Legh Vale to battle for bronze. Despite the great position St Aidan s found themselves in, it was still a very competitive final with both teams wanting to take the title. However it was St Aidan s Green that just edged out St. Aidan s White to the gold medals. Well done to St Ann s for their win in the bronze medal match and to Birchley St Marys on the Fair Play Award. A special mention goes to Luke from Ashurst who was over the moon with his Star Performer of the afternoon which he thoroughly deserved and to the incredible leaders from St Augustine's for once again enabling a brilliant event to go ahead. Y3/ 4 Key Steps Gymnastics The St. Helens Centre for Gymnastics played host to the Year 3/4 Key Steps Gymnastics competition after The Beast from the East led to the postponement of the competition the previous week. This gave the schools a little bit more time to perfect their routines. Schools took part in three disciplines - the floor, body management and the vault showing high levels of co ordination and flexibility. In contrast to all of the other competitions, Gymnastics is a relatively quiet event and all the schools respected this allowing their team mates and opponents to concentrate on what they were doing. This event was a School Games qualifier with the top two schools going to the School Games Finals. After two very high standard sessions, it was St Aidan s Green who continued with their impressive form this term taking another School Games title with Rainford Brook Lodge securing second spot and with it a place at the School Games Finals with St Austin's taking home the bronze medals. A big well done to everyone who took part and thank you to The St. Helens Centre for Gymnastics for hosting the event. School Games Qualifiers St Aidan s & Brook Lodge
5 KS1 Multi Skills It had seemed like a long time since the KS1 pupils were in action at the New Age Kurling event so it was nice to see them back competing at the Multi Skills Festival. This was another popular event in which 95 pupils from 18 schools took part in ten different stations testing agility, balance and co ordination. After all ten stations were completed we were able to add up the scores and find our medallists. In the morning session St Thomas of Canterbury stormed to the top of the table taking the first trophy on offer with St James taking the silver medals and Queens Park the bronze. The Star Performer of the morning as awarded to Yasmin from Willow Tree for her quick and agile feet in many events but mainly in the ladder event chosen by one of our very helpful Edge Hill students. After a great morning and lots of smiles, Chapel End were awarded the Fair Play Award. During the afternoon session, St Bartholomew s and Garswood, after 10 events, couldn't be separated and they both sat at the top of the table with 84 points. Eccleston Lane Ends managed to bag the bronze medals and Haydock English Martyrs took home the Fair Play Award. A big well done to Vivian from Wargrave for being awarded the Star Performer of the afternoon and a massive thank you to the students from Edge Hill for giving up their time to help us. Another great event ticked off! Y4 Everton Festival After some very enjoyable indoor competitions, it was finally time to brave the outdoors once again. Despite a very blustery and chilly morning the Year 4 football teams still showed up in numbers with nine teams taking part in the morning session. As if the wind and cold wasn t challenging enough for the teams, the rain decided to join in as well creating some very difficult playing conditions. However, this didn't stop the teams with some great play which the Everton scouts were very impressed with. After the group stages, the top two teams in each group formed another group of four and the bottom teams formed their own group so every team had more games to play. After more games in their newly formed groups it was the Federation of St Mary s who managed to win the most games in the top group making them the winners of the morning session. Luckily for the participants of the afternoon session, the sun decided to make an appearance heating up the session in more ways than one. There were 14 teams hoping to impress the Everton scouts and that they did. After the three groups had finished their games, the top team in each group went through to a semi final along with the highest placed runner up. St Ann s played Rainford Brook Lodge and Rainford CE played Queens Park in two nail biting semi finals, one of which went to penalties! St Ann s managed to outscore a resilient Rainford Brook Lodge in the shoot out sending them through to the final against Queens Park. St Ann s penalty experience fired them up for the final in which they took the win from worthy runners up Queens Park. Well done to everyone who took part!
6 Y5 Everton Festival Another outing to Ruskin Drive this time for the Year 5 Everton Football Festival. An event sparking a lot of interest saw 26 school taking part across morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session consisted of 12 schools who were spilt into 3 groups with the top school in each group going through to the semi finals with the best runner up. Our group winners were St Thomas of Canterbury White who played St Anne s in the semi finals along with group winners Bleak Hill White and the best runners up Oakdene. After some very well contested semi finals St Thomas of Canterbury played Oakdene in the final and after being the stand out team of the tournament St Thomas of Canterbury were able to take their third title of the term. The afternoon session had a total of 14 schools, allowing us to have 4 groups with the winner of each group making it through to the semi finals. After some high quality matches, the semi finals saw Wargrave play Rainford CE and Rainford Brook Lodge play St Aidan s. Despite a valiant effort, Rainford CE and Rainford Brook Lodge fell just short of making the final leaving Wargrave and St Aidan s to battle it out for the title. In the final seconds of play, Wargrave were awarded a free kick just inside their attacking half. The ball glided straight over the wall past the keeper and into the top right corner sending the Wargrave team wild, only to be made better by hearing the sound of the final whistle seconds later! Congratulations to everyone who made the day such high quality. Y5/6 Handball A first time feature for handball for the St. Helens schools and WOW what a game! With the majority of the schools having never played competitive handball before and some having never played at all, an amazing afternoon took place at Ruskin Drive. After a quick run down of the rules, the teams took to it incredibly well and by the end of the group stages there were lots of smiling faces and a passion for a new sport. With there being three groups in the competition, the top school from each group and the best runner up went through to the semi finals. This saw Rainford CE play St Ann s and St Aidan s play St Thomas of Canterbury. It would prove one step too far for Rainford CE and St Aidan s who would go on to compete for the bronze medals. St Thomas of Canterbury managed to just edge out a brilliant St Ann s 1-0 in the final continuing their very impressive form this term and adding a 4th title to their name. In the 3rd v 4th play off Rainford managed to bag the bronze medals with a 5-2 win over St. Aidan s. A big well done to everyone who got involved in our new event. A special mention to Max from St Thomas of Canterbury who was awarded the Star Performer of the competition and to Sutton Manor for being the recipients of the Fair Play Award. Y1 LFC Festival Despite The beast from the east claiming the original date for the Y1 LFC Football festival we were lucky enough to fit in a replacement date at The Academy. There was 10 of our St. Helens schools who got to experience a great morning playing lots of football. The teams were split over 3 pitches and played a few games in their groups before being split further into seeded groups. The winners formed a top group, the runners up formed a group and everyone else joined together to make the final group. After the initial group stages it was St James, St Bart s and Grange Valley that made up the top group. The next 3 games would decide the overall winner and having not lost a game over the whole morning it was St Bart s who claimed that title with St James close runners up and Grange Valley in third. All the Year 1s had a great morning, all received signed certificates and even got the chance to meet and have photos with mascot Mighty Red!
7 Level 3 Merseyside Finals Sportshall Athletics A massive congratulations to Legh Vale who managed to retain their Merseyside Sportshall crown for the 3rd successive year. Also well done to St. Helens other representative Bleak Hill on their 8th Place finish in a high class field.
8 Level 3 Key Steps Gymnastics Having qualified from the St Helens round of Y3/4 Key Steps Gymnastics competition, St Aidan s and Brook Lodge earned themselves a spot in the Merseyside School Games Finals. Flying the flag for St. Helens in their bright red t-shirts both schools did us proud. Even though the medals were won by other boroughs both teams did exceptionally well to get to the finals. Brook Lodge managed to finish a very credible 10th with St Aidan s snapping at their heels in 13th a massive well done to you both!
9 High School News St. Augustine s leading the way with their new imatter Programme The St Augustine s imatter campaign is a mental health campaign aimed at enabling younger pupils at the high school to feel like they can confide in an older buddy. This will hopefully allow pupils to share their thoughts and feelings if they find themselves struggling in and around school. A fantastic group of Year 10 pupils put themselves forward to be mentors on the programme and had a brilliant day learning some new skills and realising what it takes to be a mentor. After spending the morning training, the mentors met with the Year 7 & 8 pupils who were put forward as pupils who would benefit from a little bit of added support. Some very timid and quiet Year 7 & 8 pupils soon realised how approachable their new mentors were which sparked a lot of conversations and some very happy young faces. St Augustine s have scheduled a number of sessions over the academic year enabling the group to bond and get to know each other better as well as learning new and important ways to maintain a healthy mind. Congratulations to all involved in such a brilliant programme.

Dianne Murphy was an integral part of the programme and has been for a number of years. She has taken up a post with the FA which was too good an opportunity to miss. Even though she is going to missed, we will carry on with the great work that she started and inspire and provide events for the very talented children we have here in St. Helens.
12 Champions Change 4 Life Champions training enables young pupils the chance to become leaders in their school and deliver Change 4 Life Clubs to younger pupils in their school. Nine schools took part in the training at De La Salle High school which involved ice breaker activities and planning and preparing their own games to take back to school with them. For the first hour all the pupils seemed very quite and a bit shy, however after the ice breaker activities and them getting to know pupils from the other schools a bit better the noise level picked up. All the pupils delivered their games and also had the chance to observe and make other games better. A big well done to everyone who took part and we hope this benefits your school.
