UQ APPROVE NEW OVAL REDEVELOPMENT!!! A Home of our Own - Be Part of The Red Lions Foundation As the UQAFC heads towards our 60th Anniversary in 2016, The University of Queensland have committed to developing Oval 2 on the St Lucia campus as a purpose built AFL facility. After 60 years, the UQAFC have been offered QAFL standard facilities and a clubhouse to call our own. UQ have released a master plan, available at identifying Oval 2 as a dedicated AFL venue. For the club to realise this opportunity, the UQAFC must contribute to the cost of the development. As a result, the club has established a unique trust fund, The Red Lions Foundation with the Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland Inc. Contributions will be fully tax deductible and administered by a board of trustees solely for the club s benefit. The primary purpose of The Red Lions Foundation is to invest in and maintain this new facility and also provide scholarship and educational opportunities for club members into the future. We will be in touch with you shortly to provide you with details of the foundation. Many members of the club across all ages regard their time at the UQAFC Red Lions as some of the best years of their life. The current playing group are also committed to making a substantial contribution. It is incumbent on us all to ensure that future generations of Red Lions enjoy their time at the club as we have and this development will secure that future. We look forward to speaking with you shortly regarding your contribution to The Red Lions Foundation. The respective coaches have all provided some insight into how each team is faring, and how the playing group as a whole are striving to represent the core values of the UQ footy club.

2 IT S BACK... The second edition of The Roar provides a chance to keep up with the club as it journeys through season 2015, with plenty of on and off field success already to report! Every grade has experienced victory, and the feeling around the club could not be better as we continue growing from strength to strength. The respective coaches have all provided some insight into how each team is faring, and how the playing group as a whole are striving to represent the core values of the UQ footy club. STATE OF ORIGIN THE NORMAN Although it s clearly not as exciting as our beloved AFL, the one thing that our League rivals do well is the State of Origin series. Always a fierce contest, there s no better place to catch all of the three games than in the Norman Hotel s beer garden. Get stuck in to a renowned Norman steak over a couple of craft beers with your mates while watching Queensland and New South Wales go at it. Come along and support our major sponsors at The Norman Hotel as they host the second State of Origin game live on Wednesday, 8 July. Bring your friends and family along for what should be a great night KARAOKE NIGHT Time to start warming up the vocal chords again as all the closet karaoke kings start looking forward to this years competition! 3 QAFL Written by Darren Pfeiffer As we near the half way mark of the season and sit 1-9 its hard to be satisfied with where we are at. But in saying that, the win-loss record was never of primary concern to the coaching group when we sat down at the start of the year. From both internally and from the outside footballing community, it seems as a playing group we have taken a real step forward. Most importantly, our first quarters have been our best quarters all year, and it proves that when the heat is on in a game we have the ability to be a very good side, and compete with any team. When I watch the video each week I see a team that is either winning the game or losing the game of football, which is a great opportunity because it means we have a chance to turn it around very quickly. The challenge for us is consistency, and that will only come from driving a non-negotiable standard of excellence on the training track that becomes second nature for all of us. We need to have as many people as possible consistently pushing the UQ wheel forward, because once it starts building some real momentum, this UQ wheel will be very hard to stop! PURPOSE RELENTLESS PRIDE Cheers, Darren 2015 has seen an exciting start to colts football at UQ. With the newly split north and south competitions we found ourselves placed in the northern sector with some very stiff competition. With changes to the comp there were also changes in the team, adopting the club name of the Red Lions and gathering over 15 new talents down to oval 7. The tone had been set through pre season, seeing great numbers and a real up beat vibe in the group. With round 1 greatly anticipated, it saw us up against a hard hitting Maroochydore side, a team which in the previous year had been deep into finals. Through quick ball movement and a real want within the group we were able to grind the match out to register a one-from-one start. Round 2 saw a depleted side take on Mayne, another team who had played finals the year before. Once again, our fighting spirit and ability to run games out saw us get the win in front of a greatly appreciated seniors crowd. An electric start in our Rd 3 clash with Morningside ensured we had the confidence and the run to be able to grind out another win. 3 from 3 and on top of the table, a loss to a very talented Aspley side was followed up by another tough win against Sandgate. COLTS Written by Rob Pettis Our latest fixture was against Wilston Grange, a side that had pumped us by 150 points last year when we met. The opening quarter saw them get the jump on us going into the first break down by 3 goals. Resetting and adjusting to the conditions, we were able to claw our way back into the game to draw even at halftime, and carry the momentum into the fourth to string together our fifth win of the year. Some brilliant individuals have performed in the early parts of the season with Jonno Macanawai, Henry Mundie and Jack Spurgin picking up where they left off last year, displaying guts and determination in the middle in times where we needed them to stand up. New boys, Tom Jamieson and Sam Hodgson have provided tall marking targets all over the ground and Marcus Mcnee and Wills McCulloch providing run and smarts up forward. Although individuals have stood up it has been the teams ability to gel into one unit and the willingness to work for each other that has ensured a confident start to the year. With a few wins under our belt, the boys are hungry to ensure we continue to play a good, winning brand of footy. Red Lions Australian Rules Football Club (RLAFC) Inc. 3

4 The QAFA B comp is almost exclusively a Friday night fixture and is at a genuine senior football level. The standard is particularly good and a big step up from the reserve grade level that many of us have played for the last few years. The Red Lion squad is currently at 6 wins from 10 games sitting 6th on a crowded ladder in a 14 team competition. Two out of our losses were by less than 10 points and all were to the top sides so we are certainly in the mix and looking to a finals spot come the first week in August. All things considered we are delighted with that outcome given a number of internal and external challenges faced over the last 6 months. QAFA Written by Peter Rosengren We are flush with numbers which on one hand is a good problem but on the other a significant administrative challenge. As we don t have quite enough to sustain a second team we have entered into a loose joint venture arrangement with the Ipswich Eagles to help with numbers to get their side on the park. That sees at least six, but up to as many as 12, players having a run with them each week. It provides a spot to play but doesn t solve the problem that all Red Lions want to play in a Red Lions jersey!! Through rotations and good grace we are getting there. Milestones come and go and we probably don t make the effort to track and celebrate them all as we should. One that will not be forgotten was club stalwart Darryl Stephenson who notched up his 150th game for the club recently against Mayne. Congratulations Dazzler. LADIES Written by Michael Swann The Red Lionesses are still very much finding their feet in the football world, but have been taking huge strides forward in season A number of opposition sides have made comments about how rapidly our girls have improved since entering the competition a mere two years ago, and have commented that we re definitely the ones to watch out for in the back half of this year. Our QWAFA side sits at 1-6, but have played some very gallant football. In a competition with some very experienced ladies sprinkled amongst newer players our relatively inexperienced side is always going to be facing an uphill battle. Our newer girls, however, have shown great enthusiasm and there is no doubt that they will be stringing together wins very shortly if they continue learning the intricacies of our game and finding out more about how their team-mates play. The State League competition has been a little up and down for the Red Lionesses. Our senior side announced their arrival as a future force with a thumping 90-point Round 2 win over Griffith Moorooka. The girls are probably a little unlucky not to have more than the two wins on the board at this stage but will be looking to come home with a wet sail in the second half of the QWAFL season. The QWAFL girls came up just 4 goals short of both Coorparoo and Zillmere, last year s two grand finalists. Considering that we had not previously gotten within 150 point of either side it s clear that we have closed the gap to those top sides quite considerably. To keep improving our girls will now need to focus on developing some additional avenues to goal so that they may better capitalise upon their forward entries. We have had forty different girls experience senior level footy and hope that our rookies can continue to put selection pressure on the QWAFL girls to drive development. This coming weekend sees both Ladies sides travel down the M1 for a weekend away. QWAFA will be hungry to go 2 from 2 against Burleigh in the morning to kickstart the second half of their 2015 campaign. The task is more difficult for the QWAFL side who take on the ladder leading side from Coolangatta. The last time these two teams met our girls played with courage but nonetheless sufferred a significant loss but, fresh off a win, our girls should approach this match with renewed enthusiasm and will no doubt be keen to continue closing the gap to the top teams. LAST MAN STANDING TIPPING COMP Unfortunately for most who entered the Last Man Standing Tipping Comp, organised by current player Luke Stewart, the crystal balls were not very clear! In what has been an unpredictable start to the AFL season, we were left with an outright winner in Edward Hooper after just Round 6. The money raised was well spent however, with the club now using three state-of-the-art Sports Performance Tracking GPS systems to help record player data.
