Training Night Canteen Roster 15 July Under 9s 22 July Under 10s 29 July Under 11s 05 August Under 12s THE ROAR Newsletter 15 th July President s Message 15 July 2010 Welcome back everyone from the school holiday break. Good to get back into the footy. Unfortunately some very sad news to tell you. Young Eric Harrison from the U11s lost his dad last week. Eric s father passed away suddenly and his loss has come as a huge shock to Eric and his family. We extend our condolences to the family and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they struggle through this difficult time. To show our support for our teammate every Graceville player will this weekend wear a black arm band as a mark of respect for Eric and his family. On the financial front the club received some good news over the break. Thanks to some great work by our Grants Coordinator, Scotty, SGRLC has been awarded a grant from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund to undertake some upgrade works around the grounds. The committee will prioritise the works to be completed but look for some improvements over the coming months. On the flip side some not so good news we have been advised that our grant application for funding for the new lights to our new playing field has been unsuccessful. We will keep trying to obtain the required funding but it would seem that night time use of our new field is still some time away. All Junior Teams at home this Sunday. Please check the canteen and match day roster and help out where you can. Good luck to all teams this weekend. Canteen Dinner Under 9s tonight. U10s next week. Warren Creevey President. Club Behaviour I think everyone within this club has probably witnessed at some stage, anti-social behaviour from visiting teams supporters or staff. While this is not acceptable, it happens. It is an entirely different matter however, when that behaviour or abuse is levelled at our own referees and support staff from members of our own club. We all know that emotions get the better of us some times. It is human nature that we will not always agree with refereeing decisions, and that voicing disapproval at these decisions happens. However when that turns into swearing at referees from near the players enclosures that is not acceptable and will not be tolerated by the club. Our children do not need to hear these gestures and neither does anyone else. Our referees (who are all committee members as well as coaches/assistants or managers) volunteer their time and do a great job. I think it s about time we showed some support. Referees are not a special breed either. This behaviour has also been directed towards support staff of our teams. These people also donate their time to carry out these roles so that we can put teams on the field. Without them our children would not be playing at this club. This is not what Souths Graceville Rugby League Club is all about. It has always been a friendly, family orientated club and I wish to see it stay that way. Scott Gehrman, Referees Co-ordinator Match Reports from Rounds 15 & 14 Under 7 s The under 7's had the away game that was more like a boys own adventure trip. It was an early start on Sunday morning for the drive to Cleveland point to catch the ferry to Stradbroke Island to take on the sharks for the first time this year. The excitement amongst the boys was palpable and emotions were running high before the game, it must have been the sea air as well as the big trip. After throwing a wet blanket over them the boys calmed down a bit and got their minds back on the job of playing football. With no reserves and Sam Harris getting out his sick bed to play we seemed up against it, but the boys came out with the right attitude and had a real crack. With Jack Fox providing good service from dummy half Jaidyn, CJ, Patrick and Ryan were able to make damaging runs up the middle which led to a number of tries. The defensive pressure we applied also led to

a number of turnovers in possession, this made it a lot easier to create scoring opportunities. The boys also seemed to really enjoy the refereeing as they were left in no doubt about the rules of the game and how they should be applied, they packed their first scrum for the year and were even allowed to kick for touch. All up it was a very enjoyable day especially having come away the winners with a scoreline in our favour. Thanks to all the parents for making the effort to travel all that way especially Andrew for organising the tickets, please make sure that no-one forgot to pay him for your tickets. Under 7 vs Eden s Landing Round 14 We played away at Eden s Landing but without our trusty coach, Devin, you took his family camping for the weekend. The game was only minutes old before magnificent Muffa started our try scoring spree. Jayden, one of our team s try scoring juggernauts, continued by adding another two tries to his season tally. Rampaging Ryan also scored two powerful tries, CJ ran into an open paddock for a runaway try and Sam Harris also slammed over for a try. Also pleasing to see, was sum sizzling runs from Sammy Hughes, along with some courageous runs from Jack and Flynn played his best game of the season and came within metres of scoring his first try in the corner before being caught by the Eden s Landing defence. Great team effort boys!! Score: Graceville 32 defeated Eden s Landing 4 Tries: Jayden 2,Ryan 2, Muffa 1, CJ 1, Sam Harris 1 Goals: Jayden 1, Sam Harris 1 Under 8s Graceville Vs Inala Round 15 After suffering our 3 rd straight loss, the coaching staff would like to assure everybody this is not a team in crisis; we are not holding emergency player meetings; there is no talk of defections to other codes, and the players are in full support of the coaches! After another fantastic opening quarter, boasting a comfortable 14 nil lead and looking unstoppable, the young lions took their foot off the pedal and were chased down by determined opponents. Our eventual downfall resulting from a loss of focus on our defensive line, and allowing two very fast Inala players to run around us. Once again there were plenty of positives despite the disappointment of going down to a team we should have beaten comfortably. Our ball running was strong with Coen and Sam s charging runs earning big metres down the middle and giving us great field position to work from. Luke used his smarts and pure determination to make the most of some close range possession carving them up early to score another hat trick of tries great stuff! Tom and Lucas showed great speed and evasion to slice through the edges both unlucky not to cross the line in fact Tom did twice, but received no favours from the ref bad luck mate we were robbed! Dan and Josh again looked the goods with the ball in hand and it was also great to see Nicky back on the try scorers list after a zippy burst down the right flank keep running to the gaps Nicky. Cade posed a constant threat with his sharp moves from dummy half and continues to impress in this role. Another pleasing aspect of our attack was Cade and Luke s ruck work, it had depth & width their passing and organisational skills resulted in plenty of good clean ball to the runners a big highlight was Cades long ball to Luke who dummied to a charging Nicky and passed to an even wider running Coen who galloped off for a long run just being pulled down by desperate defence.pretty to watch. Our defence in the first quarter was spot on moving up together as a team and smothering any attacking flames the opposition could fire at us. We then defended as individuals for the remainder of the game rather than as a team, and paid the price on the scoreboard, so close gents. It certainly wasn t all doom and gloom though, and was hard to miss some great defensive efforts. Luke put in a man of the match display, putting his body on the line on several occasions to knock potential try scorers into the crowd. Tom and Nicky showed off some classic tackles out wide to curtail the antics of Inala s nimblest ball runners. Coen moved up all match and showed plenty of guts to knock over the oppositions Big Bopper with a couple of great one on one tackles. Cade and Lucas also put in strong efforts chasing hard all game and racking up plenty of important tackles. Finally, how good was that? Our first scrum of the year! And the boys new what to do, a great coaching effort Ok, ok the boys watch NRL too. Just so it looked like the real thing, and it was, the ball was fed just like NRL behind the fullback s heels, yes fullback s, we don t have second rowers in under 8 s (the bellow heard from the crowd He s been doing it all day sir!! Music to the ears), gotta love ya footy! Bad luck boys - lets work on combining our individual efforts into a mega team effort next week and we ll come up winners.

Graceville 18 Tries: Luke 3, Nicky 1 Goals: Nicky Inala 24 Tries Homer, Bart, Ralph, Skinner, Krusty Goals Sideshow Bob. Sideshow Mel Under 8s Graceville Vs Greenbank Round 14 The boys were expecting a tough game against arch nemesis Greenbank and all expectations were fully met. Despite Greenbank s size and strength, the young Lions offered strong resistance and plenty of courage to be valiant in defeat. It was nil all at the first break, the game was on.. Our enthusiasm early in the match was unbelievable many of Greenbank s runners being confronted by 8 tacklers. Unfortunately Greenbank were pretty enthusiastic too, making our boys work hard for every metre of ground. The Lions were sucking the big ones in at every break in the contest, this was our most physically enduring game this season and the pride of Lions didn t stop the chase, well done. Tough games call for big efforts and there was no doubting the effort our boys put in today. Coen was tough as teak, putting plenty of shoulder into his non stop tackling display, and breaking the stonewall defence with a battering ram charge to score our first try a huge effort. Nicky Low entertained us with his gift for great cover defence, but much more than that, he really took on the big guys in the middle and came out a champion. Luke was in everything up to his ears at full speed with his uncompromising defence and dangerous ball running not to forget his quick thinking around the ruck that resulted in our second try great stuff. It was great to see Sam get back into the action, getting involved in plenty of tackles and running straight and strong with the ball keep it up mate. Cade played with irrepressible determination whether chasing down a run away opposition train, or giving his all to break through the defence, it was done with full effort. Lucas continues to impress in his rookie year -making great ground with his fleet feet, and as we have come to expect, making many important tackles in closer to the ruck. Ofo, Josh and Dan each showed how dangerous they can be with the ball, and should come away from today with great confidence. Their straighter running caused plenty of havoc for Greenbank and certainly would have resulted in a bag of tries against lesser opponents. Keep those legs pumping boys! Ultimately the game came down to a few lapses in our straight line of defence and some strong and fast opponents. It also be would be fair to say Tom s absence was also a big loss; his usual high quality contribution would have been most valuable against such a strong side. No doubt it was a great effort boys hold your head up high and let s work on keeping our focus for every second of the next game. Champions keep trying until they get it right, on we go!! Graceville 10 Tries: Luke 1, Coen 1 Goals: Josh Greenbank 26 Tries Squarepants, Star, Tentacles, Crabs, Puff Goals 3 Cheeks Under 9's Round 15 Over the past 2 weeks the boys have come across the 2 best teams in the competition and while being on the wrong side of some big score lines we have learnt more about ourselves than any of our previous games and what we have to do if we wish to compete against these teams. While we tried hard all game we must learn to hold on to the ball as long as possible. Throughout the game we handed back possession to Mustangs 6 times before the first tackle was completed. When you play against sides that are well drilled in defence and have plenty of attacking options we need to treat the ball like gold. Zac topped the tackle count with a massive 31 tackles and was well supported by Jaydon, Tom and Alex. Without these boys efforts the scoreline would have been much higher. In attack we found it hard to break their defence which moved up quickly and in one line all day however Tom did manage to find some space which led to great run down the blind side for a try. I know we are a better side than we have showed over the past couple of weeks and lets hope that now the school holidays are over we can get back to being the competitive team we were before the break. Mustangs 44 - Graceville 6. Scorers Tom 1 Try Zac 1 Goal Under 9 Round 14 Missing 4 players due to holidays we went into our match against Greenbank which are one of the better sides in the competition knowing that our game would have to be at its best if we were to be competitive. Unfortunately I think the boys talked

themselves out of the game before we even got on the paddock. In that there is a lesson to be learned in that we must remain positive before and during the game even if some players are missing and irrespective of who and where we are playing. A negative attitude is easy to spot by the opposition and only instils more confidence in them. If we go out each Sunday and concentrate on the skills we practice each week and try to be the best we personally can be we will always walk off the field with our heads held high knowing that we can be proud of ourselves and that we have respected the values of our club. While the score line showed a defeat there were still some great performances - Alex, Tom and Dylan led the way in the tackle count with all of them showing the value of tackling low bringing down the bigger and faster opposition. If we can all learn to move up together on both sides of the field the tackling will become a much easier task for the whole team. In attack Tom, Josh and Luke made some great runs testing Greenbank s defence each time they touched the ball. Thanks very much to Nicky, Luke and Coen for stepping up from the under 8's. Your efforts were once again much appreciated by your team mates. Scorers - Tries Josh 1 Tom 1 Goals Josh 1 U10 s Round 15 Friday nights in Logan are always a blast... And our time in the hood was no different. After finally fielding a full team with no reserves, our boys proceeded to play some magic footy and got away to an early lead. Contributions came from everyone with Harry the pick of the forwards with some strong running and very effective defense. Zac decided to turn in an attacking lesson with a hat-trick of very good tries. His strong running to hit the line at pace was a feature and he troubled the Logan defense all night to win a deserved man of the match. Dylan once again showed his strength with some galloping runs downfield. The twins were everywhere in defense and showed some mighty spirit to bring down the considerably larger opposition, as did Timmy and Jordan. Gang tackling was on the menu tonight with four and five to a tackle seen more often than not. A feature of this game was the teamwork in defense to repel the Logan attack time and time again on our own line. One tackle in particular by Callum who was eventually helped out by half the team, summed up our enthusiasm to keep the opposition out. A very pleasing game from a coaching perspective and a fine game for the spectators. Graceville 30 - Logan Brothers 6. Previous week Round 14 was a Bye. Match Report U11s 27 June 2010 Round 14 What a fantastic effort easily our best defensive game ever. Our enthusiasm in defence today was great. We got up quickly off the line and really put pressure on the big Beenleigh attack. By the second half their big guys had got tired of being knocked over and had stopped running. Then we began to dominate the game. The other aspect of this game I really enjoyed was the spirit we showed coming from behind to eventually take the lead. As seems to be our habit we started slowly letting in two pretty soft tries before we began the hard work of winning this match. Our attack was at times very polished. Our first try came from a well executed move that created space for Stevie out wide and we all know that given an extra yard of room Stevie will make the most of every opportunity. Even so we were still 6 points behind at half time and it was our courage in defense that eventually got us on top. One lesson for us to take from this game is that we must maintain our composure when we are under pressure. There were times today when a little panic drifted into our attack when we knew we had to score. Whenever we are under this sort of pressure the best thing to do is simply revert to what we know best. We train to play the game the best we can so if we play the way we train we can be confident that this will bring us success. A great effort. The scoreboard says it was a draw but we and Beenleigh both know that today victory was ours. Award recipients; Player of the Match Gus. Really excelled today with some powerful running and the best tackling I have ever seen from him. A very proud moment to be Man of the Match in such a strong team effort. Tries of the Match Stevie. Eagle 2 worked like a charm creating room which Stevie did very well to exploit. And Nick. A very clever try taking on the defensive line as second receiver and using his strength to get over the try line. Well Done. Tackle of the Match Brandon. Everyone but the Beenleigh player could see Brandon lining up this hit. Read the play well and timed his hit to perfection. A great ball and all tackle that had every opposition player looking out for him for the rest of the match. Well done everyone a fantastic effort!! Try scorers today were Stevie (2) and Nick with the goals kicked by Nick, Jake and Stevie. Score Souths Graceville 18 drew with Beenleigh 18 U11s Round 15 - Inala Forfeited

SPONSORS Under 12 After a nice break we encountered Souths at home. With our normal halfback away we filled in with Isaiah from under 11's He did a great job considering he did not know our structure or play directions. Unfortunately we looked very disorganised in defence and attack in the first half with us making a lot of mistakes that we don't normally make. It didn't help that they had a monster that came down from the premier division and the size of the forwards that they have. Coen Lead the way with his one on one tackles on the bigger guys and the courage shown by the rest of the team not taking a backwards step. A great effort by Jayden making a try from a great kick but again the ref saw differently. The second half was much better with Richard making a brilliant try. with some great runs from Yafith, Blair and Bryce making good headway but unfortunately getting tackled at the last hurdle. Jayden made some great decisions in defence and made a couple of try savers, definitely playing one of his best games. Nelson had a great game back in the forwards and Yafith playing at five - eight for a change in scenery. Souths ran ahead from us by way of the premier division player planting on the wing and the shift went straight out to him leaving us a bit fragile one on one with him. Bad luck boys but we need to stay focused and get back to how we normally play in our normal positions. Forest Lake
