Newsletter 11 April The Club Community The SGRLC is a not-for-profit family-friendly rugby league club and we all work together to help our club function and to provide opportunities for our players. Please approach your Coach or a Committee member to see how you can assist. We need Coaches, Managers, Referees, Touch Judges, LeagueSafe, trainers/water runners and First Aid Officers in every team. Some of these roles require doing a course (easily done in 1 2 hours) in March and April, so please put your hand up early so you don t miss out. Periodically we have working bees to keep the club looking smart and parents of all teams are encouraged to help with running the canteen on training nights and game day duties. You get more out of involvement than you put in! You will find that many not-for-profit organisations like ours are volunteer based. Not only does it help keep the fees down but the kids playing footy (those we re doing this for) see their parents having fun and putting their bit in. Such an important lesson and better than that, it really builds camaraderie between the families of the club as a whole. Something we will come to really appreciate and look forward to as the season progresses and in the years to come both on and off the field. or _us SGRLC - the ROAR Page 1

Open s Match Report The Open s game from 23 rd March 2013 After a long and tedious pre-season, a wash out and a bye, the opens finally got their first game last weekend. The match saw them going down to Bulimba. However, it must be mentioned that the score card did not reflect the performance, with the team in the game until the last 10 minutes. The team played well considering it was the first time a number of the guys had played together and the fact they were coming against a team that already had one game under their belt. Despite running the rust out of the system and trying to gel together, the guys put up a good fight. In the end it was just match fitness let them down, something that will improve with time. The mood in the sheds after the game was positive and the opens were happy with how things went and are looking to get some wins on the board as the season continues. The Open s game from 6 th April 2013 The second game of the season saw the opens convincingly beat Wynnum The team had moments of brilliance in attack and their on the line defence was spot on with Wynnum s only points coming from a dubious touch judge call. While the team fronted up and played well, there was a lot of dropped ball on the weekend giving the guys something to focus on. For the most part the team looks like they getting comfortable with each other s playing styles and really starting to gel. If you re around this week come out and support the guys as they take on the competition leaders Slacks Creek at home. Under 7 s Match Report U7 s had a forfeit this last weekend. Under 8 s Match Report Our under 8 s ventured to Kookaburra Park in Rocklea to take on the St Brendan Brothers again in very hot conditions at 10.00am. We were strengthened by the addition of Seth from the Under 7 s for this local derby clash. To get Seth to play for us, I had to release my patent on The No-Go Zone coaching strategy to Luke the Under 7 s coach (he s also Seth s Dad). I am prepared to enter this strategy into the Mini League Trade Secrets handbook. What a difference a week makes. After our best training session of the season on Thursday night, the or _us SGRLC - the ROAR Page 5

mighty lions turned up to play today. They showed tremendous team spirit today. It was the best display of sharing the ball around in attack that I have seen. Everyone has grasped the jersey order for whose run it is concept. This is really pleasing to see as our teamwork was second to none. Even when we were getting tired in the third and last quarters it never faltered. This good teamwork also spilled over to our defence was our tackling intensity lifter in the second and third quarters. Again, great team effort guys. It goes to show that you play the way you train so I need each and every one of you ready to train hard when we resume training on the Thursday night after Easter. The final score today was in our favour 42 points to 24. Our game highlights were as follows: Bayley was really red faced at the end of the game due to a non-stop effort; Noah s defence was outstanding as he laid plenty of bone jarring tackles; Evan showed his off-loading skills; James came into the game in the second quarter as he wanted to ease his way in as he was getting over a cold but this did not stop him from making some heavy tackles; Toshi continued on his try scoring spree with another three tries. It was good to see him move into first receiver when he tired in the last quarter; Ethan again showed his all-round skill with several strong jinking runs and he also made plenty of tackles; Toby showed that he is the master of the sneaky dummy-half run with an impressive 30 to 40 metre run down the right hand touch line that saw he partially tackled then he went again for a second effort. Great stuff mate; Diesel made some crunching tackles and is showing his leadership skills by organising our team around the ruck when we are in defence; and Seth, the under 7 s general, displayed his silky skills and can fill in for our team whenever he likes. For next week s game, we need to continue this good team work. Score: 26 were defeated by Greenbank 36 Tries: Toshi (3), Diesel (2), Ethan (2) and Seth (1) Goals: Toby, Ethan, Toshi, Bayley and Seth Thanks to Julian for doing the sidelines, Peter for keeping score and a big thank-you to Skippy and Tammy for the ice-packs and face washers at half-time. Have a happy Easter. Photos are taken by our team photographer Tammy (Diesel s Mum) and they are of Toshi on the charge and Ethan showing his dodging skills against Greenbank last week. 7 Under 9 s Match Report The lads were up against a tough team playing Logan at our home ground this Sunday missing 4 key players in Ryan, Jack, Flynn and Shannon as well as the Coach, Manager and Touchy. We were lucky enough to have two new players transfer papers come through in time Welcome Jye and DJ and your families to, we all hope your time with us is enjoyable. The boys played on a hot day with no reserves, particularly rewarding to hear that they all gave it a go without any subs on an increased field size new to the team this year. I hear the lads had a bit of trouble with keeping their defensive line and some ball handling errors, but there were also some very standout efforts with Ed, Jacob and Nick kicking it up a notch. There was 1 try by Nick and some great cover defence from our new boy Jye Great stuff guys. The final score was 4; Logan 24. A very commendable effort considering the hurdles, lack of sub s and up against a tough team. A special thanks must go to our stand-in s as well. A/Coach: Andrew Benjamin (Ed s dad), A/Manager: Steve Tarasiuk (Josh s dad), and Touchy: Alex Crisafulli (Jacob s dad). Brendon and I must be the luckiest Coach and Manager around with such a supportive team; thanks boys and thank you parents for help out on this unusual weekend in footy. Pete Under 10 s Match Report Match report up-date next week. Under 11s Match Report Lions v Rochedale First home game for the year and despite a final training session that had the same level of focus as 100 three year olds in a pool of green cordial, the boys came ready to play. With two players out it was going to be a long hot game for the boys with no reserves, but the focus of the boys in the dressing room indicated it would be Rochedale who will be in for some heat! However, thanks to Patrick backing up from our under 10 s for helping us keep the burners on full tilt. Well the first 5 minutes of the game saw us under pressure with defensive gaps, no possession, poor field position, a deficit of 4 points, and the Tigers full of running. The blow torch was on us and it was not the start we expected. To our credit we hung tough, didn t panic, and started to close our defensive gaps with Connar & Lucas leading the way on the edges and Luke topping the tackle count keeping busy across the line. The boys began to move as one and met the ball runners at the advantage line and bending them back. After being on the wrong end of some physical defence the Tigers really didn t want to run anymore. From this point our defence shut down the Tiger s attack and the momentum swung in our favour, as they say, defence wins games. The young Lions all of a sudden found great attacking field position and Luke had our big fellas lining up to pound through the faltering Tigers. It was only a matter of time before the camel s back was broken and or _us SGRLC - the ROAR Page 7

the floodgates opened with our backs relishing the space offer by the battle shy opposition. One had to feel a bit sorry for the referee who had to keep up as our speedy backs raced away for 7 unanswered tries. This was a great team win, 3 rd in a row and placing us on top of the heap; however we have not come up against the competition heavy weights as yet and are not getting carried away with our start to the season. The team structure is building very well with much more improvement to come and we can t wait for a real test. Keep up the good work and practice your basic skills at home. Lions 32 Tries: Nicky 2, Harry 2, Abu 3, Goals: Nicky, Ben Rochedale 4 Under 12 s Match Report On a day that was better suited for the beach the boys minus 4 players but with reinforcements from the Under 11 s went up against Beenleigh in what proved to be their best test so far this season. While always appearing to have the upper hand we went in to the break-up 8-0 which was the biggest margin we had all game. The two tries in the first half were both by our wingers one slashing run by Abu and the other some great finishing work from Ewan which was a just reward for his efforts so far this season. I could count on one hand how many wingers tries were scored last year so we continue to break new ground. The second half saw Beenleigh score first and after some tense and testing moments Dylan finally busted them open to put the final score at Plenty to like about the game especially our defence which has only given away 16 points in the first 3 games this year. No doubt there will be days when it gets tested but while our technique is not always correct the effort is 100%. Harry completed a massive 22 tackles well supported by Geoff, Alex, Luke, Griffyn, Johnny and Alec. All these boys reached double figures which was a great effort with the other 6 just below them in numbers. Billy challenged the oppositions defence every time he had the ball not only individually but looking to put his team mates through a gap. Nice strong running from Dylan and Geoff in the forwards also helped our cause today. A great team effort where everyone contributed. Lets keep working hard and try to improve each week. Many thanks to Luke, Nicky and Abu for helping out this week. These boys never looked out of place in the higher age group and all made valuable contributions. 12 Beenleigh 6 Scorers Tries Abu, Dylan,Ewan Under 13 s Match Report Match report up-date next week. Under 14 s Match Report Well our first game for the season. The day did not start well with illness and registration issues reducing us to 10 available players but it was time for us to make a start so we took to the field anyway. I could not have been prouder of the way the boys took to the challenge. We knew Forest Lake would be a tough opponent after having a couple of ferocious games against them last year. And with only 10 players or _us SGRLC - the ROAR Page 8

we knew we were going to do it tough. But no one shirked from their responsibilities and the game started with a lot of enthusiasm from the team. It was like we hadn t stopped playing for the summer at all. The team gelled again started playing good, disciplined and structured football. Our attack was crisp with plenty of support for the ball runners and our defence was enthusiastic moving up quickly and preventing our opponents from exploiting our lack of numbers out wide surprisingly, we found ourselves up 16 to nil after 15 minutes. It was awesome to watch the power running of our forwards with Isaac and Kyle leading the charge, and the speed of our backs with both centres Stevie and Aryn scoring great tries. Our halves Sam and Nick kept things moving nicely and both did a lion s share of the defensive work. And of Course Tom W as always worked himself to a standstill in both defense and attack. Welcome to Javier putting in a very solid display in his very first game of Rugby League. Great effort guys- that was enormous and if we had 13 players we would have run away with this game. Final Result Forest Lake 24 defeated 16 Under 15 s Match Report We went to Slacks Ck, an old nemesis, with full intention to pay them back for the last 2 unsavoury loses we had against them. This was a game that I was not worried about grading and just wanted to get a big win as did the boys who remember. We started off without Bailey and Nelson (injured ankle), 2 very good players for the team, put a bit of pressure on but knowing the depth that we had this year and the return of Richard I was still pretty comfortable that a win was coming. This is a special group of Boys that have an excellent bond and just has that feeling about them, they all get along with each other and all have the respect for each other that is very much needed to move forward. It didn't take long for them to get the first points on the board and they just kept coming, they are playing to the game plan extremely well and are sticking to the team structure no matter what. If it strays, thanks to the great leadership by Bryce and with John's assistance they get it straight back on track, yet they do try out their options if they present. Josh and Henrique's run's from dummy half really put them on the back foot followed up by our big boys, then out to our speed men to convert the advantage. Slacks Ck had a huge forward pack that we simply played out of the game, with big tackles and hard runs aimed directly at them. Coen was hit or _us SGRLC - the ROAR Page 9

in one of the biggest tackles I've seen for a long time, as usual he got up as quick as he could, played the ball and continued on. Must discourage them when the opposition see's this. Alfred's hard hitting runs were frequent and effective, along with his defence, probably our best forward for the day. There were some great runs by the boys, the impressive part was the width that they were playing, one side to the other and throwing in the odd short run, really confused Slacks Ck and they couldn't adapt. There was a couple of standout moments in the game, one when a high kick went out to Jayden's wing and with a Slack's player coming down at top speed with intention to tackle him as he caught the ball, Jayden caught the ball a moment before he was smashed by the tackler and retained possession. It was like watching NRL players, fantastic work under a lot of pressure. Another was when prince scored and the crowd gave him a hard time for not admitting to a dropped ball, so when they kicked off to him he ran straight through them and scored again and made a reply to the crowd. Silence was golden. Late in the second half Slacks were able to get a couple of tries out wide, mainly as we were buggered from running in our own tries. Final score was 58-14, Ref called it early. Try scorers: Prince (3), John (1), Belly (2), Red (1), Andrew (1), Yafith (1), Jayden (1), Bryce (1) Conversions: Jayden (7) A Big Thank-You The Bronco s Jersey Raffle held by the Under 15 s was very successful and helps us to pay fee s for some boys that aren t able to pay. Otherwise we may lose them to another code and that would be a big loss for us, the club and the Sport as they are truly great ambassadors for the club. Winners: First prize - Robyn Van der Vorst - ticket sold by Zack Campbell Second prize - Karen Gordon - ticket sold by Leanne Stumer Third prize - Corey Walton - ticket sold by Zack Campbell Our second place winner, Karen is the Great-Niece of Bert St Clair, former coach and long-time member of South Junior Rugby League Club (the oval was dedicated to him).
