But what, may be asked, is a viage? One source tes me a viage is a custered human settement or community, arger than a hamet but smaer than a town, with a popuation ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. In the past, viages were a usua form of community for societies that practiced subsistence agricuture, and aso for some nonagricutura societies. In this country, a hamet earned the right to be caed a viage when it buit a church. Athough many patterns of viage ife have existed, the typica viage in times gone by was sma, consisting of perhaps five to 30 famiies. Homes were situated together for sociabiity and defence, and and surrounding the iving quarters was farmed. In Domesday Reoaded, on the web, to be a viage, a settement must have a church, a viage ha or community centre, a schoo (though not necessariy, some shops, usuay incuding a post office, a viage green, aotments, a pubic house, paces to work, both private and counci houses, and a parish counci or parish meeting. We, apart from aotments, we have a that but perhaps we have a itte more. There is a certain pride about Farndon. About how it ooks and how we want it to ook when peope visit us. We have a Parish Counci which takes a progressive approach to its duties and we, of course, have FREG which takes great pride in making the viage ook better. This year we aim to go further with our Best Kept Viage chaenge when the eyes of the judges wi compare us with other aspirants. We a need to pu together, keeping the viage ooking good. To be the best of the best and to impress. There s a ot to be said about iving in a viage and iving in Farndon is no exception. FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you 3

I had received requests to organise another tak by Poyanna at Farndon ony the week before I heard the news. It has been a great honour to work with Poyanna and her daughter Anna Louise recenty and I honesty don t think we woud have the new watch hut at the Farndon wiow Hot without her generosity of time, connections and support. Like many other peope mum, Shirey Hatcher and I visited Poyanna when she hed exhibitions at her studio near Bakewe. We admired her so ifeike widife designs, especiay the eyes and watching her spend an hour with a fine brush adding individua hairs onto the fur of a cheetah was awe inspiring. When her designs were converted by companies into cross stitch mum and I coud combine our two oves whist raising money for our favourite charity, Nottinghamshire Widife Trust by seing the produce competed and framed cross stitch designs. Out of courtesy we wrote to Poyanna asking for her permission to use her designs for this purpose, as we did to severa other cross stitch designers. Whereas most designers just wrote back either giving us permission or refusing Poyanna asked for more detais. When we expained about hoding a month ong exhibition/sae at Attenborough nature centre of the competed designs Poyanna not ony granted us permission to use her design but put us in contact with DMC the company that produced the cross stitch kits featuring her artwork who donated materia, threads and kits to us, but she aso recommended our project to an internationa cross stitch magazine that produced a page ong artice on the work mum and I were doing. This was not enough for Poyanna she wanted to do more so when she reaised she was free both the opening and cosing weekends of our exhibition the offer of two taks and her demonstrating her painting during the rest of the day came from Poyanna which we quicky accepted. That set of taks raised 1500 which paid for the panning appication fee for a project at Besthorpe nature reserve. When Poyanna heard our watch hut had been destroyed by an arsonist she offered her hep. Four 4 FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you Poyanna Pickering taks ater and after another cross stitch exhibition amongst many other fund raising events we got the funds to buid our hut so when we were ooking round for someone to open our hut Poyanna was an obvious choice and was thried when she reaised she was free the day of the hut opening and was abe to see the competion of the project she had supported. Even that day she didn t do ike many ceebrities opening events of opening the event then disappearing she aong with her daughter set Poyanna at the hut openng up her sta seing books, cards and products featuring Poyanna s artwork but made a point of speaking to a the other sta hoders, minging with the visitors and earning of their connection to the watch group and taking to the chidren and eaders of the watch group hearing of a the pans we had for using the hut. As she eft, Poyanna said she hoped to return one day to see us using the hut and thanked Shirey and I for invoving her in such a wonderfu project she even mentioned our hut opening on Create and Craft TV the next day aughing as she tod everyone how the scissors which worked perfecty we for me one minute faied to work for her so she neary ended up biting the ribbon to decare the hut open, We had a reaxed reationship with Poyanna and Anna Louise. If we went to an event where they were, they aways greeted us enthusiasticay and aways asked after the viagers of Farndon, who they fet had supported us so we in our fund raising. I was so ooking forward to contacting Anna Louise to organise a date for Poyanna s next visit but was heartbroken to find mysef instead writing a etter to Anna Louise sending the condoences of not ony mysef but the other eaders and chidren of the watch group and Nottinghamshire Widife Trust. The watch group are hoping to invite Anna Louise back to the Farndon Wiow Hot when we hod our next open reserve day and to formay show our thanks for the hep Poyanna gave us.

5 Farndon widife watch report The recent fooding on the Farndon Wiow Hot didn t stop the watch chidren athough it offers concrete proof of why the hut is on stits as the water apped the sixth step which is the ast step before you get to the fooring of the hut. Luckiy, athough arge pieces of tree stumps were moved quite forciby around the area by the hut, no damage was sustained other than to some fencing which was due for repacement anyway. March saw the Hedgehog Awareness charity from Foston join us for a meeting when we earnt a about these pricky friends, how to recognise a hedgehog in distress and make a rescue box that we coud keep the hedgehog in unti we coud contact the rescue charity. A the aduts and chidren drew around their hands and then cooured the resutant hand prints which were then turned into a arge hedgehog on the hut wa. Apri saw us ooking around the reserve for signs of spring whist finding od puffba mushrooms showing that there were sti signs of autumn around! News from the Widife The chidren and eaders were saddened to hear of the death of Poyanna Pickering and rather than just signing a condoence card the chidren wanted to do something more so they drew pictures of the hedgehogs they saw ast month to show off their artistic skis. In the May meeting we used the recent foods as an excuse to ook at water and who needs water. We came to the concusion that everything whether bird, mamma, insect or pant needs water to some degree but too much can be just as bad as too itte. We then waked around the reserve ooking for signs of water and birds, animas and insects using water in some way. We founds severa bugs and snais on fower heads drinking water where it had gathered in the fower head and took some back to the hut to identify. Back at the hut the eaders tod the chidren a about 30 days wid which is run nationay by a the widife trusts across the Uk and the chidren have a taken a sheet home to record what they do each day before bringing it back to our Juy meeting. As part of June s 30 days wid a the nationa widife trusts have decared the weekend of 16th/17th June Wid Weekend when across the UK famiy friendy events wi be hed at widife trust reserves... Our nearest event is at Besthorpe nature Reserve off Trent Lane Besthorpe where the watch group eaders wi be running pond dipping and sweep netting sessions from 9.30 ti 4pm. 7 Ninjutsu host nationa course In Apri, BBD Newark Ninjutsu hosted the first nationa course of 2018 at their training base, 6th Newark Sea Scout HQ, Farndon. Led by Chief Instructor, Shihan Brian McCarthy 8th Dan and Shidoshi Ken Redden, 6th Dan from Dubin, with some 50 students/ instructors from across the UK. After a warm up start, training started with some basic but very strong technique, encouraging students to move for one eement to another to deiver power and etting the movement fow instead of being fixed to one position. This moved on to a revision of kata with the 3 way heart form, Sanshin no Kata being practiced. Repetition of these, are sound buiding bocks for good strong techniques in freestye Ninjutsu. After the unch break, four students from Newark undertook their grading's whie the rest of the students trained outdoors with Mr Redden. They went through basics of Kamae no kata postures, stances or, momentsin time as we phiosophicay prefer to refer to them. The four candidates began their grading by answering questions from the syabus, posed by Brian McCarthy, then demonstrated Sanshin no Kata and some throwing and take don techniques from Jutai jutsu before escaping from grabs and some cose quarter work. Some weapons skis are aso part of the grades, featuring sword, spear and knife. At the end of the grading session, Mr McCarthy announced were a successfu but need to buid on and deveop their skis. Darcey Dunne 19 Beckingham and Biy Owen were graded to 5 Kyu and Barry Hoand 53 and Robert Edin 24 were awarded their 2nd Kyu. The fina session of the day was centred around the Tanto or knife. Because of recent high media focus on the number of stabbings and knife crime in the UK Mr McCarthy used this to highight some of the difficuties and potentia ways of deaing with knife attacks and being threatened. The most important object is to use your senses and Kyoman no Jutsu or study and observation. This is about being aware of your surroundings, peope in them and any potentia threats that may arise. If you have chance to escape without confrontation then do it. Protect yoursef by using anything to aid you to hep you as a shied. This may be by wrapping a jacket or jumper around a eading arm, use of a bet or handbag, and umbrea or chair or simiar. If you have to face an attacker without any of this assistance, then the use of deady force is your ast option, so show no mercy. Ladies Sef Defence Course. 9 MId February this year, writes Phi Rogers, saw us returned from a short break to Orkney. Yes, we did see the Northern Lights, aso visiting severa quite On birds and butterfies archaeoogica as these necessitate reguar fiing of the feeders and bird bath de icing. Our packs of raisins and suet were gone in no time. A this et to a pretty miserabe Spring athough a decent day was to be had at RSPB Langford where a manner of birds were gorging themseves on the peanuts offered up in the feeders. Great Tits, Bue Tits, Coa Tits, Long taied Tits, Chaffinch and Reed Bunting a vying for position. As were the robins which certainy adapted to the feeders. Mid March showed things moving on when a neighbour informed me his pond contained frogspawn and five caing frogs. Co incidentay, it was a year to the day since ast time! This was foowed soon after by my first Brimstone butterfy sighting and a pair of Robins with Green finch, Godfinch and Coa Tits were greediy attacking the sunfower hearts. Peanuts sti a 'no no' The end of Apri saw us in North Norfok, a favourite ocation, with some good birding to be had and a visit to the Widife Trust's superb estabishment on the Cey Road, overooking astonishing sites of Word Heritage status with the hep of our very own persona guide. It was aso bittery cod with ferocious winds and snow showers. Thank goodness for a modern bungaow with underfoor heating throughout. This, naturay, brings me to the birdy bit. Stunning ocations, rare sightings, great opportunities. What did I see? Huge numbers of Greyag Geese, Hooded Crows, Curews, Oystercatchers and Redshank, a of which I see cose to home. So be it. And there was no way I coud fit in a trip to a nearby isand to see the Snowy Ow! Fascinating Shorty foowing our return home it was fascinating to watch a femae backbird franticay coecting awn moss (we do have some!!) and twigs for her nest in our Hawthorne hedge. It was a reminder that Spring was just around the corner. Needess to say, however, she, ike the rest of us was in for a big shock as snow and biting winds moved in at the end of the month. Conditions such the marshes and North Sea. Binocuars and teescopes are there for everyone. The shop is exceent with briiant cooked briiant food. We worth a visit. Our resident mae eucistic Backbird, (with the white markings), has been feeding his four offspring and this is the second time he has heped raise a famiy. Eary May saw things hotting up iteray. Farndon bowing green in gorious sunshine produced mae and femae Orange tip butterfies, aong with Brimstone and Bues (The Hoy and Common Bues I find notoriousy difficut to separate when they are in fight! ) and one morning I actuay stood outside and istened to the dawn chorus. What a racket. A with a purpose, of course, and ong may it ast. Finay, and perhaps fittingy, on the evening of Sunday 6th of May, did I, very briefy, heard the Cuckoo from the direction of Wiow Hot and the Trent? If so, it woud be the first time for me for severa years in our viage and I reay woud appreciate any confirmation from readers out there. Reay, reay finay. Yes, the powers that be have appointed the Rev Eizabeth Murray as the current priest in charge of the United Benefice of Farndon with Thorpe and Hawton with Cotham. And she is aso currenty priest in charge of a group of parishes down the road centred on Eston and East Stoke, known generay as the Octave group. Introduction... Dear A Firsty, et me introduce mysef. I am Revd Eizabeth (Liz) Murray and I was icensed as Priest in Charge (Vicar to most) to Farndon with Thorpe and Hawtin with Cotham on the 6th Apri. These parishes are in addition to the ones I have now: East Stoke, Eston, Syerston, Sibthorpe, Sheton, Staunton and Kivington; so perhaps I am going to be a very busy person. I have been with Eston et a since 2013 and have reay enjoyed getting to know the area. A few years ago, I came to Farndon to take a service and I was just driving aong thinking how ovey this area is, when I came across a road sign saying, cats eyes removed, this gave me a different picture of Farndon! if they are removing cats eyes what ese do they get up to in Farndon? I asked mysef. Of course, I refer to the road being regraded and not the feine persuasion. First impressions do inger for a whie; therefore, I need to reassure you that I have found Farndon and the other viages very wecoming. I am the first femae Vicar of these parishes and I hope in this I can bring a wonderfu pastora care and priesty practice to the viages I serve. I ook forward to meeting and getting to know many more peope, through working with the schoo, and as I trave with you through the sorrows and the joys of ife, and of course in worship at St Peter s. Athough I ive in Eston I ike to think I have an open door so do pease pop by for a chat or perhaps best to ring first to make sure I am in, or if you want meet to visit you, again give me a ring or emai and we can aways find a date and time. With Grace and Peace to a. Rev Liz Murray The icensing service was very we attended and a happy and dignified occasion with Bishop Tony and the Archdeacon both present. One visitor was heard to remark there is a ot of ove in that pace. Eizabeth is no stranger to us at Farndon having taken services here on severa occasions when heping to keep worship aive and kicking during our vacancy so she, in a way, is re joining od friends on a different basis and most importanty, she has aready started to buid a reationship with St Peter s Cross Keys Academy. Working it out You wi gather that arrangement of a programme of worship is going to take some working out since, with the best wi in the word and with responsibiity for 11 parishes, she wi not be abe to provide us with the programme of services we enjoyed in the past and we sha have to be prepared as a congregation to conduct some of those services which do not require the presence of an ordained minister, but this is something we have been doing during the vacancy and no doubt wi be prepared to continue. Mothering Sunday ceebrations incuded a distribution of fowers and ighting of candes in honour of mothers. Our Easter ceebrations were we attended. The Passover type mea on Good Friday was an occasion of soemn remembrance with hymns and prayers ed by the Rev 12 FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you Reg. Waton but aso enjoyabe as a socia gathering with our sister parishes joining us. We particuary owe a debt of gratitude to our friends from Hawton who undertook the responsibiity of providing the mea. There was a arge attendance on Easter Sunday. Churchwardens After Easter we hed the usua Vestry meeting for the eection of churchwardens foowed by the Annua Parish meeting reviewing the past year and making decisions for the next. Happiy our two wardens Jessica and Keith were prepared to continue in office, so no changes on that front. Generay church affairs seemed to be in good order. No shortage of vounteers for the mutitude of tasks that have to be done to keep things ticking over. Prayer Group at 9.15 on Wednesdays and Open Church on first and third Saturday mornings ti noon both seem to be attracting more interest. By the time you read this we sha have had another concert by the Dukeries Singers and hopefuy another two days of workshop in church for the Academy wi have been organised. Best wishes to you a and we hope to see you sometime. Grass Cutting The Parish Counci has been without a Handyman/Sexton for a itte whie but was deighted to wecome Simon Pashey to the team at the end of Apri. Simon has previousy worked for the Parish Counci and, with the recent wet weather, foowed by a dry spe, he wi be kept busy maintaining the grassed areas the parish has responsibiity for. As there has been a gap in maintenance, the verges have been fuy mown earier than norma. They woud not normay be mown unti 6 weeks after the ast fower has died away to protect the bubs for next year. Paying Fied With the summer approaching and the ighter nights, it is nice to see the paying fied back in fu use, with the cricket and bows cub meeting reguary. On 19th June, the second John Cark Memoria Run, organised by Peter Davis and supported by the Memoria Ha and the Parish Counci, wi take pace on the fied. This was we attended ast year and it is hoped that there wi be more taking part this year. The race starts at 6pm. BT Kiosk The kiosk on Main Street wi soon be given a new ease of ife, with a ick of paint and information eafets advertising oca events paced inside it. Loca Improvement Scheme As outined in the previous issue, an appication has been made to the oca improvement scheme for funding for new entrance signs to refect the heritage of our viage. No decision has yet been received, it is understood that successfu appicants wi be informed by the end of May. Potentia Deveopment At the time of writing, the Counci had been approached by a deveoper with a view to presenting proposas on a deveopment in the viage. The Parish Counci wi hear these at its meeting on 21st May. Cemetery Further work to the conifers have et a ot more ight in to the Cemetery and given the trees that were in between them space to branch out. The bossom on these trees has provided a pretty dispay in the Cemetery, which woud previousy have been hidden. And finay, the Parish Counci meets at 6.30pm on the fourth Monday of every month. Members of the pubic are wecome to come and join us and ask questions or raise issues during the pubic session. FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you 13

24 Busy Women s Institute Here s what we have been getting up to over the past few months! Ann Seaston reporting! Our speaker for February was Joanne Tayor, who was we and truy into feet! She has been ooking after feet for 35 years or more, having stumbed into the profession after finishing schoo. She trained with a chiropodist for some time and then spent 20 years doing home visits, that she reay oved. With famiy, Joanne moved to Spain, where she got invoved in a sorts of beauty therapies. Due to persona and heath probems Joanne came back and after awhie got back to doing feet. As she has famiy in Mansfied, she found hersef setted in Newark with her own foot business, concentrating on home visits. Photographs We gasped when Joanne said the worse the feet the better! Some of the photos that she showed us, were to us, dreadfu, but to her wonderfu! She oves tacking ingrown toenais. They are very painfu for her patients but she can give instant reief. She gave us ots of advice in answering our many questions. A very joy ady, who, I m sure, woud put you at ease straight away, during what coud be a very painfu time. March, as usua, is AGM time. The Gir Guides came to sing us some of their songs, a bit of practice of singing in pubic, I think! Some of the songs required audience participation! Trying to coordinate hand movements with singing was hiarious and a very good start to our AGM. Thanks Girs! Lots of voting Serious business AGMs are! Lots of voting goes on, for exampe our charities for the year, which are Think Chidren and the Air Ambuance. New committee members voted on, whie we sady say goodbye to Our birthday entertainment two committee members, eaving for different reasons. On 14th Apri, the Notts Federation of WIs brought the year of 100 years ceebrations to a cose at the Newark Parish Church, with a ovey afternoon of singing, readings, reminiscing, ceebrating our achievements and again ooking forward to next year. Lots of the adies dressed in the cothes of the many decades since 1917 which was very interesting and sometimes funny. The Apri meeting saw Linda Hewett show us Bread! Linda gives taks and demonstrations a round the country and aso judges bread and pies. She has ived in severa countries during her ife, due to her husband s profession, and has been infuenced by the many cutures she has experienced. She brought some oaves for us to taste and they were very tasty! Bread making can be easy She is a fan of food processors and brought her super duper one to use whie she was making oaves to show us just how quick and easy bread making can be. Linda tod us that after you have made 6 oaves you are experienced enough to know what you ike and how to achieve it. She dispeed many myths from our chidhood incuding how ong dough had to rise and how the dough used to be bashed and pued about. She gave many tips on what fours to use, she recommended Waitrose, yeasts and how to store ingredients and the bread. When making savoury breads, it is a good idea to use the ois that some foods come in, such as sundried tomatoes or oives, makes deicious focaccia! Linda made it ook so easy, she gave ots of us the urge to try bread making again! Aongside a the cooking, she has started sewing! Making a baby quit, shopping bags and aprons. Don t know where she finds the time! Linda was very generous too, donating a the dough she had made during the evening, oaves that she aready made and many items that she had created and sewn for our raffe. Enjoyabe evening We a agreed, it was a very enjoyabe evening and Linda is a briiant speaker, very enthusiastic and with a very infectious manner. We hope to see her again programme organisers! 25 The Farndon Horticutura Society chief event since the ast issue of Focus has been the Spring Show which took pace in Apri. Expectations of quaity, writes George Harper, and number of entries were not high in view of the harsh winter and eary spring weather and some members were quite pessimistic about their prospects. In the event there was a much better turnout than expected, both in attendance and number and quaity of exhibits on show, especiay since a number of members were attending the church service where new Vicar, the Reverend Eizabeth Murray was being icensed. Good quaity 17 members submitted entries and the quaity was good. There were 22 casses 6 of daffodis, 2 of tuips pus sprays from fowering spring shrubs and potted indoor pants. In addition the taents of the fower arrangers were tested by 3 casses in the fora art section entited Branching Out, My Favourite Container and Arrangement Suitabe for a Lunch Party. In a 132 entries were submitted with some high cass items on view. Three trophies were being competed for one for the member awarded most points in show, another for the best item in Fora Art and the third for the entry adjudged the best entry in a the casses. Spring show better than was expected Best in show The winners were respectivey Jenni Gadwin for most points in show over a wide range of entries and Margaret Cox who not ony entered the winning fower arrangement in the cass Branching Out but aso was awarded the trophy for Best Entry in Show with the same arrangement. As far as our norma programme is concerned since our AGM we have had a fascinating tak on vegetabe growing given by an expert who wins substantia cash prizes for his entries in shows. Another tak was on growing gadioi. At the time of writing we ook forward to an iustrated tak on New Zeaand and another on ferns. At the moment arrangements are being made for our Centenary Meeting on August 22nd, for detais of which see the advertisement in this issue. Annua show Our annua show wi be hed on August 11th. We hope that we wi get entries in our junior sections. For any juniors out there who may be interested the detais are as foows: there are three age groups five to seven years of age, eight to 11 years and 12 to 15 years. Each age group has the same casses for entry: any drawing in any medium and/or a HANDWRIT TEN copy of any poem. There is aso a junior photography section. A photograph of any subject provided the photo is no bigger than 20 cm x 15 cm with no time or date printed on it. One cass is for ages up to 12 years and a second cass for ages 12 to 15. So there you are boys and girs, you have something to think about during the summer hoiday. Disappointing One disappointing thing to report. We have had scarcey any interest shown by members in sharing the work on the committee or take the responsibiity of doing the work of one of the officers who keep the work of the society going. 27 It woud have been difficut way back in Apri to have missed the fact that the nation was ceebrating the centenary of the formation of the Roya Air Force by the amagamation of the Roya Fying Corps and the Roya Nava Air Corps. It woud have been even more difficut to understand the mind set of the miitary and nava figures who were opposed to the creation of the new fighting force. What has this got to do with Farndon? We, one of Farndon s residents had a distinguished career which spanned both Word Wars and contributed in no sma way to the nation s success in each. His name was Patrick Huskinson. The famiy ived at Farndon Lodge. Patrick s father was Coone of the oca T.A Battaion of the Sherwood Foresters and a soicitor in the firm of Newbad Larken and Toynbee.. Not much has come to ight regarding Patrick s eary ife. He was born in 1897 in Farndon. In the year of King George V s coronation 1911 the famiy distributed to a the chidren in Farndon a coronation mug in Patrick s name. His parents sent Patrick to Harrow pubic schoo and he served in the schoo cadet corps. By the time he eft schoo at the age of 18 Britain was at war with Germany and he made his own way to France to visit his father who was Commandant of a arge base. Back in the U K he was admitted to Sandhurst for officer training and after graduating joined the Sherwood Foresters. Somewhere aong the ine he had picked up a fascination with fying and within the year he was posted to France as a Second Lieutenant in the Roya Fying Corps. Active service In his eary stages as a piot he was engaged in directing artiery fire and photographing enemy trenches. Later he bombed raiways and enemy trenches and experienced his first brush with death. He was bady shot up in a dog fight with enemy aircraft, ost contro of his pane and had to gide back to British ines and safety. On another occasion he destroyed Hero of the Roya Fying Corps and Roya Air Force a train with bombs but his aircraft was bady damaged by the bast and he had to gide back to ground eve whist being shot at by both sides. This earned him the Miitary Cross which was quicky foowed by promotion to Captain. At this point he was Fight Commander of six aircraft. In 1917, over a period of fourmonths he shot down 12 enemy aircraft. A Fying Ace Though never in the same cass as the Red Baron Richthoven of Germany or Captain Abert Ba of the UK he coud be regarded as a fying ace. On another occasion he narrowy escaped death when his pane ost its propeer in a dog fight and finished upside down in a waterogged she hoe. Patrick neary drowned before being rescued. He repaired his engine and imped home to safety. For these expoits he was awarded a bar to his Miitary Cross (the equivaent of a second MC). Stayed with RAF After the end of the war he was with the Army of Occupation in Germany with the rank of Major. As many airmen eft the service to return to civiian ife, Patrick decided to remain with the newy formed RAF and make it his career. He spent some time as an instructor at Cranwe, and then came the moment which turned him from a war time fighter ace of the Great War into a desk bound warrior of the Second Word War. Personne were required to choose to speciaise in one or another branch of the RAF. He chose the armaments branch which was then in its infancy. This gave him the chance to deveop his taents. He widened his experience finding bombing ranges for testing and bombing practice and was posted as Armaments Staff Officer at the Air Ministry. He was made a Wing Commander in 1933 and a Group Captain in 1937 in charge of 2 bomber squadrons. However in 1938 he can be said to have reay arrived when an Ordnance Committee was formed to concentrate on the deveopment of a manner of guns, bombs and ammunition and he was the RAF representative on the committee with the post of Director of Armament Production. That appointment brought him into contact with big names ike Dowding, Tedder and Harris. Once war had broken out and the wartime cabinet was formed he associated with peope ike Lord Beaverbrook, Director of Aircraft production and even the Prime Minister Winston Churchi. The roe he occupied invoved deveopment of new weapons of war. Some of the suggestions of the boffins were quite comica and incuded expoding tennis bas (an eary kind of bouncing bomb?) and rats parachuted down with exposives tied to their tais as a kind of booby trap. Needess to say they never made it past the drawing board. What Patrick Huskinson was far more interested in was bombs the bigger the better. At the start of the war the RAF had nothing more etha than Genera Purpose bombs of 250 pounds and 500 pounds weight. Under the guidance of the new Director, as the power of new types of bomber ike the Lancaster increased so do did the size of new bombs from 1000 pounds upwards. And as the need grew to penetrate deep underground bunkers the end of the war saw the production of the Taboy of pounds and the Grand Sam of pounds. His reward for a this work was promotion to the rank of Air Commodore and the award of the CBE to add to his MC and bar. The Americans awarded him their Legion of Merit. There was a persona price which he paid, however. Based in London as he was, he ived with his wife in a fat in Knightsbridge. One evening in Apri 1941 he was working on some papers during a German bombing raid and waked over to the firepace to fetch his pipe. The next thing he knew he was ying craded in his wife s arms, wounded, beeding and unabe to see. Their fat had been hit by a German bomb. Medica examination reveaed that he had been permanenty binded. This did not hat his vauabe work for the war effort and he earned to work his way round his disabiity with the provision of secretaria hep. He earned to read the time by removing the faces from cocks and watches and he read maps and bueprints by having outines perforated with a toothed whee. Everyday items had to be eft permanenty in the same pace so that he coud memorise their position. At the end of the war he retired from the RAF and entered the word of business and became Chairman of a London printing firm. He died in 1966 aged 69. 28 Don t be caught out this winter Safeguard your centra heating system. What is power fushing? Many peope don t give their centra heaing system a second thought unti a cod snap strikes. As experienced pumbing and heating engineers we are urging home owners to think about their centra heating so that it wi be running efficienty when they most need it. Probems are sometimes not aways obvious, so if your radiators are sow to heat up, or cod near the midde at the bottom, the chances are that your centra heating system needs power fushing. Power fushing is the most effective way of ceaning a system, to keep it running efficienty for onger. It s aso important to power fush a system before instaing a new boier or the manufacturers guarantee may be compromised. How is power fushing carried out? The principe of power fushing is to create a powerfu water fow through the system to remove a debris. Used in conjunction with an enviromentay friendy chemica ceaner and protector, It removes sudge deposits of imescae and corrosion debris. If this debris finds its way back to your boier it settes and forms a sate ike substamce that expands at a different rate from the boier meta causing stress between the two and utimatey eading to further damage which coud be uneconomica to repair. After a system has been fushed a magnetic fiter can be instaed to prevent further deposits reaching the boier. The improvement in performance after a power fush is so marked that you that you may not have ever experienced your radiators ever being so hot. Contact us today if you woud ike to discuss the benefits of power fushing and ooking forward to being warm and cosy during the winter months 28 FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you

29 Farndon cricket cub get underway good, with their first games starting in mid May, we are ooking forward to seeing how they take their winter deveopment from the nets out on to the fied. Our Notts star Rhiannon wi be eading from the front as she takes on the captain duties. Friday evening coaching is underway and this year we have the addition of A Stars Cricket, which has proved to be a big hit for five to eight year ods. Our Kwik Cricket coaching aso continues for 8 11 year ods and our U13s aso train on the same evening. There s a rea buzz on Friday evenings from 6pm as everyone turns up, the sun comes out, the BBQ sizzes away and ots of kids are After a very wet spring the season is finay underway at Farndon CC. The 1st XI started their campaign on May 5th at home against Hicking in Division D after being reegated by a meagre 3 points in the 2017 season, they are hopefu for a more successfu season under new captain Dave Adwick. The 2nd XI had a weather affected start with two games abandoned without a ba bowed due to unfit grounds in Division K. A rea shame as we are excited about seeing our youngsters in action for a senior team. We wish captain Richard Burroughs a the best in eading his mix of experience and youth during the summer. The Sunday XI are ooking forward to another successfu season after gaining promotion in to Division 4 of the Newark Aiance, a tough start against Chiwe in eary May was a test for Andrew Lamb and his team, but we are sure they wi bounce back as the season progresses. Our participation in the Newark Evening League has become our deveopment team, aowing some of our juniors to make the progression from junior to senior cricket whist aby assisted by some of our more experienced payers. There has been some promising performances so far in this team by the Farndon youth, with a win first up at Edingey and a very narrow defeat against RHP. Lots of exciting prospects coming through the ranks. Juniors As ever our junior section continues to fourish. The U13 squad is ooking particuary Farndon Under 13 s team out enjoying the wonderfu sport that is cricket. If you haven t aready done so, you shoud come down and see what we are a about, we are very much a socia cub as we as a sports cub. 30 Trave Topics in The simpe stone sepuchre is overaid with back marbe and covered by a round, stone inaid dome. A huge bronze statue of the archbishop, moved from Nicosia s The fight of some 2,250 mies from East Midands Airport to Paphos in Cyprus takes some four and a haf hours and its we worth the time on board to arrive at the deights that this mediterranian isand has to offer. Situated within amost a stones throw from the coast of Turkey it enjoys a cimate that is bound to attract. Since the time when the isand was annexed by Britain in 1914 it has experiened severa periods of unrest with Enosis eaders, Archbishop Makarios and Georgios Grivas fighting for independence which came about in 1960, then foowed by the Turkish invasion in Juy 1974 which resuted in the divided isand that exists today. We few into Paphos airport, writes Phiip Inga, in the southern (Greek) part of the isand and then through Paphos town and aong the coast road to Cora Bay and our hote. Day one was exporing the oca area and a visit to Paphos, a town divided into two parts. Inand there is the od town with many historic buidings that seem, on first sight, to be far too grand for a sma town but it has to be remembered that, at one time, it was the capita of the isand during Roman and Byzantine periods. The town abounds with shops and a good car park in the midde of them. A short distance down the road eads to Kato (or Neo) Paphos which, with its sma harbour, incuding a caste and outdoor theatre, aso abounds with hotes, restaurants and shops to capture attention as we as historic sights such as the Tombs of the Kings and some perfecty preserved mosaics cose to the harbour. Paphos houses the ruins of the Sanctuary of Aphrodite but you have to go out onto the road towards Limmasso to find Petra Tou Romiou or the Rock of Aphrodite, near Pissouri viage, said to be the birthpace of the goddess of ove hersef. The egend is that you find true ove if you swim round it three times. Another presence of Aphrodite is in the other direction from Cora Bay to the attractive sma fishing viage of Latchi where some exceent restaurants, on the sma harbour, are a good pace to stop for food. The natura grotto of the Baths of Aphrodite, and its botanica garden, can be found past the viage and towards the tip of the Akamas Peninsua. Shaded by an od fig tree, amidst ush greenery, egend tes us the Greek Goddess Aphrodite bathed in the cear poo beneath the rocks. Somewhat of a et down as a tourist attraction. Cyprus without a visit to the Troodos mountains woud not be compete. The argest mountain range in Cyprus is ocated in roughy the centre of the isand. Its highest peak is Mount Oympus and the journey there goes through both inhabited and deserted viages and a great area of natura beauty idea if waking is your forte. The Kykkos Monastery, one of Cyprus s most spectacuar, is we worth a visit for the outstanding frescos, god decoration and architecture. Just two kiometres from the monastry is the tomb of Archbishop Mikarios the first president of Cyprus, ocated on Throni Hi. Buried here at his request, cose to the pace where he served as an apprentice monk Archepiscopa Paace in 2008, now stands on the hi, adding to its grandeur. Higher up on the path from the tomb is the Throni Shrine to the Virgin Mary with spectacuar, views of the vaeys and roads beow it. A wishing tree is ocated just near here, where the pious tie paper and coth messages in the hope that the Virgin Mary grants their requests. Coser to Paphos is the monastery of Ayios Neophytos where, in 1150, a 25 year od monk of the same name cut a hermitage out of soid rock with his own hands. His bones are contained in a wooden sarcophagus and his sku in a siver reiquary. The road to Limasso takes us aong the coast road past Aphrodites Rock, making a short detour to PIssouri for morning coffee. You can expore the ruins of the Tempe of Apoo and the Koossi Fortress before skirting the RAF base at Akrotiri where in the Spring the Red Arrows have rehearsed their programme. Then drive to Limasso with its centuries od caste, other historic buidings and a busy seaport. Cyprus s second argest city, Limasso has a wide promenade and busting shopping streets. The resort enjoys a reputation for fun and some of the Isand's best beaches. A day exporing there can be we spent. Nicosia, the isands capita, has a the sophistication of a typica isand capita with, in addition to its historic buidings, museums and art gaeries, it has many designer shops, trendy restaurants but sti a divided city with checkpoints between the two separate parts of the isand. Worth a ook to see it in person. 30 FARNDON FOCUS... news and interest for you If you intend to take a hire car to the north, the main crossing in Nicosia is Agios Dometios. Cyprus immigration authorities have confirmed that EU passport hoders with a 'TRNC' stamp in their passport wi not experience difficuties when reentering the south. On the way to NIcosia stop off at the viage of Pano Lefkara, famous for its eaborate cotton broderie angaise ace produced in the open air by women of the viage. It is aso the birthpace of the ate Sir Reo Stakis who, as a poor Cypriot, started by seing ace door to door in Engand and became a hote magnate seing his empire to Hiton Group in 2000 for 1.2 biion. Food in Cyprus is whatever you want but there are Cypriot dishes that are a must. A favourite is Keftiko pieces of amb in a traditiona Greek recipe made with sow cooked amb, first marinated in garic, oive oi and emon juice. Other meat dishes incude Stifado, a wonderfuy fragrant beef stew and Afeia, a traditiona pork dish braised in red wine. There are many more. Fish is avaiabe but can be reativey expensive as this part of the Med is not rich in fish. To mention a the speciaity dishes woud fi a book but be brave, sampe them and eave fish, chips and burgers at home. Beer is popuar, Cyprus brands of Sherry and brandy are aso worth drinking. Liqueurs incude a deicious Fifar (made from oranges). Cyprus wines go back centuries and incude Commandarias, Spourtiko yia Mavri Moshato, Koios Shiraz, Erimoudes Constantino to mention just a few that are popuar on the isand and abroad. This artice has ony just touched on what Cyprus has to offer, and that s just the south of the isand. It s a unique isand of history, cuture, food, sunshine and more than anything a good pace to reax. But when you are there be sure to buy a good guidebook to make sure not to miss anything. Some content in this artice is based on 2017 and some information may have changed.
