6 Messenger Summer/Fall 17 RECREATION GUIDE Around the Ranch Project Update: Zone 4C Pump Station and Pipeline Construction on the Zone 4C Pump Station and Pipeline projects began in April of this year. Both projects were hampered by spring showers, however, as the weather has dried out significant progress has been made. Excavation for the below ground pump room was completed in April, followed by the placement of the concrete foundation and pump room walls. This summer the remainder of the exterior walls will be completed, allowing the roof to be installed and the structure enclosed to accommodate the installation of pumps and control equipment. The pump station is on schedule to be complete and operational by the beginning of the 2018 irrigation season. Construction of the 7,000 linear foot pipeline began with the installation of mainline connections in S. Broadway and Wildcat Reserve Parkway. Following the connections, the contractor began installing pipe from S. Broadway east, navigating through the open space and along the Marcy Gulch drainage. Pipe installation is estimated to be complete by mid-august. The soft-surface portion of the Marcy Gulch Trail, from Gateway Drive to S. Broadway, will remain closed until the trail has been fully restored; the trail is estimated to reopen in late July. The concrete trail east of Gateway Drive is intended to remain open throughout construction with the use of occasional detours. Centennial Water staff understands the impacts this project has posed on vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the vicinity of the project, and they appreciate the ongoing cooperation of the community as this project will have a significant benefit on the potable water delivery system throughout Highlands Ranch. Project updates can be found at centennialwater.org. Central Park development update Progress continues on Central Park, a community park that will be the centerpiece of the Central Park mixed-use development south of Plaza Drive and east of Lucent Boulevard. The park is being built and designed in partnership with Shea Properties, the Metro District, and Douglas County. After construction is complete, the park will be conveyed to the Metro District. The 3-acre park will include an entry water feature, three shelters, restrooms, a grand staircase, a garden maze, a large group picnic site and slackline poles. It will also feature a central sculpture tower that will serve double duty as a communications tower for the Douglas County Sheriff s Office. Construction is scheduled to begin this month. Project updates will be posted to highlandsranch.org. Protecting landscape from Japanese beetles Avid gardeners are always on the lookout for landscape pests that can establish themselves in gardens and yards. In recent years a growing number of gardeners have had to deal with Japanese beetles, which can cause damage to many varieties of plants including trees, turf, flowers and shrubs. The adult beetles chew on many commonly grown plants and leave behind skeletonized leaves as evidence. According to the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Japanese beetles were originally detected in Colorado in 1995 and have been difficult to eradicate along the Front Range. Metro District staff members have been trained to look for signs of Japanese beetles throughout our extensive parks, parkways and open space systems. As long as the beetle s presence remains limited, the Metro District will proceed as it normally would using best management practices to sustain plant health including spot treatments of insecticides as necessary. Responsible irrigation, appropriate fertilization, timely aeration and strategic mowing and trimming practices are the best line of defense for keeping this beetle and other pests at manageable levels. For helpful links to state resources and more information about managing Japanese beetles on your property, please visit highlandsranch.org/osic. 22 Chatfield Storage Reallocation Project Get connected with the Chatfield Storage Reallocation Project. A new website debuted in May at chatfieldreallocation.org providing more information, an interactive map, a new educational video and more. In addition, the company overseeing the project, the Chatfield Reservoir Mitigation Company, launched Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts to communicate project updates and share information. Once complete, the project will result in an additional 20,600 acre feet of water storage space in Chatfield Reservoir that can be used by municipal water providers and agricultural organizations. This change will raise water levels in the reservoir an additional 12 feet during non-flooding periods. The project impacts recreational and environmental features at the reservoir and has resulted in numerous mitigation measures to lessen and compensate for these impacts. Construction will begin in the fall of 2017 along Plum Creek. The project will have no impact to Chatfield State Park visitors during summer Keep up to date as the project proceeds: Instagram #ChatfieldReallocation Park and trail improvement projects With 25 parks and more than 70 miles of trails in Highlands Ranch, it is a daily job to make sure they are well maintained and ready for visitors. This year several projects will enhance our parks and trails system. Northridge Park The second phase of the Northridge Park renewal, following last year s restroom upgrade, will create a more updated and inviting park for residents. The existing basketball court will be converted into a halfcourt with extra space for a free throw shooting area. The picnic area will be renovated to be ADA compliant and will feature picnic tables, grills and additional amenities adding versatility to the area. Sturdier and more attractive retaining walls will replace the deteriorating timber walls. Other updates include regrading the largest field to improve drainage, renovating the irrigation system to be more efficient, and widening the park s interior trails to 8 feet. Construction is expected to begin in late August or early September and is planned to be completed by the end of the year, weather dependent. The playground and other ballfields will remain open to visitors during construction. Redstone Park playground The playground at Redstone Park is scheduled for replacement late this fall. The Metro District schedules playground replacements during the time of year with the fewest visitors and when the irrigation is turned off. The playground design will be developed with vendors to promote inclusive play for all abilities with updated equipment. The five elements of inclusive play include social, physical, sensory, communication and cognitive. Redstone Skate Park Renovation of the street skating area of Redstone Skate Park brings a new, durable design for skateboarders and riders at a variety of skill levels. Originally built in 2001, the skate park is a 22,000-square-foot fenced concrete facility that is a popular destination throughout the year. The street skating area previously featured ramp boxes that degraded in the elements. The new street skate plaza features a variety of rails along with concrete banks, ledges, and stairs that flow into the existing quarter pipes. Replacing fences along our parkways During October through December of this year, approximately 6,000 feet of Metro District-owned fence is scheduled to be replaced. This project will be followed by the replacement of another 10,400 feet of fence between January and April of 2018, weather permitting. During this process, the original cedar wood fence will be replaced with a more durable composite material called Trex, which is made of recycled plastic and reclaimed sawdust. The fence replacement schedule is typically set at the end of each calendar year. The following sections are scheduled to be replaced: 2017 Along Broadway between Northridge Road and Dad Clark Drive (1,200 ft.) On the east side of Quebec Street from Timberline Road to the open space north of Chestnut Hill Street (4,800 ft.) 2018 Along both sides of Lincoln Avenue from Quebec Street east to the end of Metro District property (6,100 ft.) On the west side of University Boulevard from Dad Clark Drive to Venneford Ranch Road (2,500 ft.) Along University Boulevard from the East Vista Trail to Colorado Boulevard (1,800 ft.) The fence replacement program is funded through the Metro District s Major Repair Fund. This fund was established in 2004 to provide a longterm source of funding to replace or repair maturing infrastructure such as fire stations, park facilities, and Metro District buildings. The most significant projected expense in the fund is for the fence replacement program. If you have questions about the Metro District s fence program, visit highlandsranch.org/fence or send an to info@highlandsranch.org. The Metro District owns 42 miles of parkway fence along major two-, four- and six-lane roads in Highlands Ranch. For a list of Metro District-owned fence, visit {highlandsranch.org/fence. 23 { Highlands Ranch Outdoors RECREATION GUIDE
