2 2018 All-American Sponsors Recreation Sponsors help support our recreation programs by funding shirts and equipment needed for each activity. If interested in learning the benefits of becoming a sponsor, contact the Parks and Recreation office at ! 2018 All-Star Sponsors Managing Emerald Ash Borer What is Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)? EAB (Agrilus plannipennis Fairmaire) is a non-native invasive species originally from Asia EAB was first detected in 2002 in the state of Michigian, and since its detection, has spread to 30 states including the state of Colorado (detected in the City of Boulder in 2013) EAB only infests ash trees (Fraxinus spp.), and is responsible for killing more than 100 million ash trees throughout the United States, making itself the most destructive insect to ever hit North America EAB in Colorado? Currently, EAB has only been positively identified within Boulder County (Cities of: Boulder, Longmont, Gunbarrel, Lafayette) Within the Town limits of Berthoud, there are more than 3,500 public area trees, with 30% of all total trees being ash (whereas most municipalities contain roughly 15%) Considering EAB is a federally regulated pest, a quarantine has been place in the County of Boulder, along with additional portions of Weld and Jefferson Counties As of now, EAB has NOT been detected within the Town of Berthoud limits What Should You Do? 1) Determine if you have an ash tree 2) Assess the overall condition and measure the diameter at breast height (DBH) of the tree 3) Determine the importance/value of the ash (e.g., ecological, economical, social) 4) Begin to monitor for signs/symptoms of EAB (e.g., canopy thinning/die-back, epicormic sprouts/shoots, D-shaped exit holes, S-shaped galleries, vertical bark splitting, increased wood-pecker activity) Additional Information Visit the Town of Berthoud s Forestry Webpage at: parks-recreation/forestry If you believe you have EAB, please contact the Town Forester at: Parks & Recreation Hiring!!
