1 CARNEGIE TIMES THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE 14 INSIDE: CARNEGIE SEASON STATS CLUB NEWS OPPOSITION: EALING TRAILFINDERS SQUADS FOUR BEST SIDES GO HEAD TO HEAD IN SEMI-FINALS Y orkshire Carnegie Head Coach Bryan Redpath is predicting the toughest semi-final series yet in the Greene King IPA Championship ahead of the final round of regular season action. Last weekend s results confirmed the four sides that will compete in the two-legged semifinal, which begin in a fortnight, but this afternoon s results will decide where Ealing Trailfinders and Doncaster Knights will both end up. London Irish returned to winning ways last weekend in spectacular style by defeating Rotherham Titans at the Madejski Stadium. Table-toppers Irish, who were knocked out of the British & Irish Cup by Jersey Reds the previous weekend and also suffered their sole Greene King IPA Championship defeat of the season at the hands of the same opposition seven days previous, ran in 12 tries to rack up a thumping 82-3 success. Rotherham actually opened the scoring courtesy of Caolan Ryan s third-minute penalty, but from there on the visitors were blown away by an irrepressible green tide. Alex Lewington led the way with a hat-trick of tries while Fijian international Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Blair Cowan and Brendan McKibbin all helped themselves to doubles, with Ollie Hoskins, Theo Brophy-Clews and Tommy Bell all also crossing the whitewash. With the boot, Greig Tonks helped himself to seven conversions, with Brophy-Clews also successfully slotting between the posts as Irish put on a fearsome show of power ahead of the play-offs. Ealing Trailfinders booked their first-ever place in the Greene King IPA Championship play-offs in style with an 11-try triumph over London Scottish. A seventh-successive victory saw Ealing hammer their near neighbours and ensure a top-four finish in the second-flight for the first time in their history. Rory Clegg, who also notched up seven conversions, got the ball rolling with a first-half penalty, and the former England Saxons flyhalf also crossed the whitewash late on. Alun Walker, Miles Mantella, Arthur Ellis and Will Harries all scored two tries apiece, with Joe Munro and Josh Davies also dotting down. Yorkshire Carnegie Head Coach Bryan Redpath expects the play-offs to be tougher than ever this season Whilst a hat-trick from skipper Ryan Burrows secured a secondplaced finish in the Championship for Yorkshire Carnegie, Doncaster Knights ended Jersey Reds' hopes of a play-off spot following a win over the Islanders at Castle Park. Knights ended Jersey s 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions, and Richmond s victory over Cornish Pirates means that they will now fight it out with Ealing for thirdplace in the final round of the Championship this afternoon. The fact that all four teams are in such strong form shows how tough the play-offs will be. Yorkshire Carnegie Head Coach Redpath commented: I think the four best teams over the course of the season are now in the playoffs. Irish are clearly the favourites but all three of the other teams will fancy their chances at this stage. "Ealing Trailfinders have built a strong squad over the last two years and they are well coached. Doncaster had a tough start to the season but they have proved their quality as the year has gone on and will be looking to use their experience from last year in this campaign. Tickets for the Greene King Championship home semifinal play-off are on sale now. This match will take place at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Friday 5th May, kick-off 7.45pm, against either Ealing Trailfinders or Doncaster Knights. Gates for this match will open at 5.45pm. 4 CLUB NEWS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ACADEMY PLAYERS Academy stars Elliott Ward and Lewis Wilson both featured for England Under-19s against France at Stade Jules Ladoumègue, Massy. Wilson started at flanker and Ward came on from the bench, but they were unable to help the young England team to victory, who went down in the friendly fixture. Ward is a former pupil at QEGS and was part of their successful Natwest Cup runs, making it through to the finals of the competition in 2012 and The Pontefract-born player previously played for Sandal RUFC from minis to Under-14s under Darren Reynolds and Paul Wild and started his journey on the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy pathway with the Under-16s under head coach Danny Wild. He progressed from the Junior Development Squad to the Under-18 Junior Academy and continued through to the Senior Academy side. Wilson, a former Pocklington School pupil from York, was selected for the England Under-19 rugby squad, a year after making his debut for England Under-18s. The flanker is currently on loan to National League Two North team Wharfedale, making 14 appearances and scoring five tries for the Dalesmen so far this season. He returned to Carnegie to make his debut earlier this season in the British & Irish Cup games against the Dragons Premiership Select. Sean Houltham, Master i/c Rugby at Pocklington School, said: This is a significant step in Lewis rugby career progression and is a well-deserved reflection of his hard work, dedication and considerable talent. We re extremely proud of Lewis at Pocklington School and closely follow his progress. Jon Pendlebury, Yorkshire Carnegie Academy Manager, added: This was reward for Lewis efforts and performances this season, not just with Yorkshire Carnegie, but also the role Wharfedale have played in supporting and further progressing his development towards involvement at a senior level and England Under-19 level. The England Under-19 fixture is a step towards possible inclusion next season as an Under-20 and one target that I know Lewis will have next season. It is also reward for Pocklington RUFC along with Pocklington School who can take an awful lot of pride from this squad announcement. It s a great story for both club and school in supporting player progression in the county and shows how the club and school pathway to Academy partnership works. Credit to Lewis junior coaches Chris Ingle and Andrew Richardson along with school coach Sean Houltham who we have worked with him very Elliott Ward and Lewis Wilson closely over the past three seasons in all the time and effort they have put in with Lewis. Ward, who is currently on dual registration with National 1 side Wharfedale and this season played in six Academy League fixtures for Yorkshire Carnegie, has been involved previously in the England Under-18 camps, but made his first appearance against France. Speaking about his achievement Pendlebury added: Elliot has worked hard to gain the opportunity of representing England and it was well deserved following a transition from Under-18 schoolboy to playing regularly in National 2 with Wharfedale RUFC. "Elliot began at Sandal with Paul Wild and Darren Reynolds as his coaches and more recently supported well by Ian Wolfenden and Trevor Barker of QEGS, where Elliot has had some significant highs during cup runs and being losing finalists. This has been a long season for Elliot and one that has been important for a young player in his position to have a balance of challenging opportunities and experiences making the jump from Under-18 to senior level." Ollie Fox has also been called up to the England Under-18 side and was named in the teams to play Canada and Ireland Under-19s in the Under-18 International Series and will be hoping to play a role in the final game against Scotland on Sunday 16th April. Max Wright enjoyed success with the England Under-20s who won the recent Six Nations and Dan Preston-Routledge played for England Students in their draw against Ireland Universities. Pendlebury added: Congratulations to all our Academy players who have won international selection, the whole club are proud of your achievements. BURROWS NOMINATED FOR GREENE KING IPA CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to our captain Ryan Burrows, who has been nominated for the Greene King IPA Championship Player of the Year award. The Championship Player of the Year is voted for by all Championship club captains and Burrows joins Ealing Trailfinders Mark Bright and London Irish s James Marshall on the list of contenders. Speaking about being short listed for the honour Burrows said: I m extremely honoured to have my name put forward and recognised as one of the top three players in the Championship this season. It s a great feeling and I must thank the club captains for their kind recognition. The winner will be announced at the RPA Players Awards, in association with England Rugby, on Wednesday 10th May at Battersea Evolution, London. Burrows, Bright and Marshall have consistently proven themselves as the standout performers in the second tier of English rugby this season, and were integral to their respective teams earning play-off spots. It s a really nice feeling to know that all the club captains have voted and recommended me for this award, said Bright. Especially at my age, it s great to know guys still think I have an impact on the pitch. And London Irish flyhalf Marshall added: It s a very humbling feeling to be nominated for this award, when I was told I was pretty surprised but I am stoked to be shortlisted alongside two other fantastic players. To book your place at the RPA Players Awards 2017, in association with England Rugby, and to rub shoulders with the past and present heroes of the game please call or Martin Olima on molima@therpa.co.uk. 4

7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: Ealing Trailfinders Ealing Trailfinders take on Yorkshire Carnegie for the fourth time this season, following one win and two defeats in the Greene King IPA Championship and British & Irish Cup. The team travel to Headingley Carnegie a week on from an 11-try win over London Scottish that booked their place in the play-offs for the first time. It has been a huge turnaround from last season where they guaranteed their place in the Championship with a win over Jersey Reds in their penultimate match of the campaign. In fact, Ben Ward s team enjoyed their first win of the current term against the Channel Islanders after they had opened with a defeat to Carnegie and a draw with Cornish Pirates. Doncaster Knights, London Welsh and Bedford Blues have also lost in the league in west London, and when Carnegie visited in the cup in October the team ran in 50 points that did wonders for their confidence. In the autumn Ealing suffered two Friday night losses on the road to Nottingham and London Scottish, but did beat London Welsh and kept up their unbeaten run in the cup with home and away matches against Bedford Blues. They wobbled on Christmas Eve when Pirates won at Vallis Way, but recovered on New Year s Day with a win away to Jersey Reds. A win over Dragons and a loss in Scarborough guaranteed the Trailfinders' place in the cup quarter-finals and they carried that on to the semis with an 84-7 win against the Scarlets Premiership Select. The cup run came to an end a fortnight ago in Cork where Munster A won the semifinal Despite that the team are unbeaten in the league in The run included maiden victories away to Doncaster Knights, Rotherham Titans and Bedford Blues, while Nottingham and Richmond were defeated at Vallis Way. Most of the comings and goings were finalised by the time pre-season began and in total 16 new players arrived in west London and 18 left. Long-time London Scottish captain and Championship XV regular Mark Bright was the highest-profile arrival when he brought his experience and try-scoring nous across Kew Bridge. Argentina international Ignacio Nacho Lancuba was another of the new faces through the door, while scrumhalf Alex Walker was named club captain, a fitting reward for his performances in his two seasons with Ealing Trailfinders, and he has responded with some inspired performances. Since then the squad has been reinforced by the signings of Glen Townson and Rayn Smid from Bristol, Kieran Murphy and Barney Maddison from London Welsh and Rory Clegg from Glasgow Warriors. Alex Codling joined the coaching staff as head coach and brought vast experience that featured an England cap, stints with Premiership and Top 14 clubs and coaching roles in the Championship and Wales. 7
