1 CARNEGIE TIMES YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs RICHMOND RFC SUNDAY FEBRUARY THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE CAPTAIN MAYHEW KEEN TO SHOW AN -MINUTE PERFORMANCE IN BUILD UP TO THE END OF THE SEASON forward Richard Mayhew has enjoyed a smooth transition to captaincy this season with Yorkshire Carnegie, guiding the team to third place in the Greene King Championship games into the - campaign. Despite a recent good run of results for Carnegie, which has seen them win eight of their last nine games - including five straight wins in the league - the -year-old feels Carnegie are yet to put an -minute performance together. Commenting on his side s recent form, Mayhew said: The pleasing things are obviously we are winning games but we are still sort of frustrated. We are winning but we are not showing our full ability, we know we can fair a lot better, we are not quite playing the way we want to play. It s positive to be winning but we want a better performance collectively and hopefully this week with Richmond we can do that and be a bit more pleased with the result. I guess what we are looking for in the upcoming games, starting with Richmond, is what people talk about a lot, an -minute performance, to have a display we are happy with. We are winning games at the end but we are probably making life hard on ourselves, when really we should be sort of cruising, so that s the goal this weekend, it s to start strong and put a performance in and see it through to the end. With recent victories being decided by seven points or less, the Kiwi believes Carnegie are learning plenty of valuable lessons in the build up to the end of the season. He added: I m not too concerned with having to win games late because I think it shows the experience and maturity we have got in the team. We have got a lot of guys who have played top level rugby, so when we have been getting in those tight situations in games we have been able to grind out wins, which is always a good sign with any side. After picking up an injury after the Doncaster game, just three fixtures into his first season as captain, Mayhew has been able to grow into his new role at the club, building a strong culture and togetherness in the squad. I ve enjoyed my captaincy, it makes it a lot easier having some of the lads that I get on really well with and enjoy playing alongside, he said. For me I just want to play well and try and lead by example, I don t want to try and say too much. We have got plenty of guys that have lots of experience around me so that makes it easier, but I m really enjoying it, it s a great group of lads and management team as well. Obviously Jimmy Lowes and I get on really well so that s also made the transition easier. My goal as captain this year was to drive the sort of culture of any successful rugby team, where we spend a lot of time together, get on well, so in those close games we have seen a lot of this season there is a real togetherness. The boys are doing really well, we are enjoying ourselves, it is tough at times with the squad size we have got, but we are just cracking on and dealing with what is in front of us. With just four remaining home fixtures left in the season, Mayhew is keen to build on the recent good form with a strong performance against Richmond, who he won t be taking lightly this afternoon. Richmond are a good side, they have sort of gone under the radar a bit sitting in mid-table but they have actually picked up some good wins in the games they ve had and when they have lost, they have only lost narrowly so it s going to be a tough challenge, he explained. They like to play with the ball and they are also quite physical, so I think they ll give us the challenge that most Championship sides do these days and I m looking forward to it. 3 CLUB NEWS BOOT ROOM BOOST FOR CLUB COACHES AT EDUCATION SESSIONS ACADEMY UPDATE Yorkshire Carnegie s Under- s hosted Northampton Saints Under-s last Friday for a joint training session at West Park Leeds. The two teams trained together for some positional specific focuses before pitching against each other in some controlled game scenarios as part of the team s ongoing preparation for the Under- competitions on the th and th March, followed by the Wellington Festival between nd-th April. The Under-s play their final game of the season today against Sale Sharks. The team lost out - to league leaders Leicester Tigers in their last game, with Joe Gatus scoring Carnegie s only try and Dan Lancaster adding the conversion. Our Academy players have continued to get game time with their dual registration clubs over the last few weeks. Harry Davey has been playing with Huddersfield, Harry Dunne and Tom Mann at Wharfedale, Tom Bullough and Ben Smith at Otley and Oli Fox at Hull Ionians. Academy Player Performance Coach Scott Barrow said: The opportunity for our players to get regular game time is really valuable to their development, so we would like to thank all the clubs who support our dual registration system. Barrow also recently ran a coaching session with Huddersfield RUFC ahead of their National Two Rugby North game against Chester. I enjoyed taking the training session at Huddersfield, there was lots of energy and learning from the boys, added Barrow. The ERDPP sessions have had support from Carnegie first-team players this month. Harry Newborn, Rian Hamilton, Louis Brown and James Thraves visited the East Under- ERDPP squad and helped out and passed on their knowledge at recent training sessions at Bishop Burton, while Elliott Ward and Pete Lucock led a session at Keighley RUFC. It has been a busy period for the ERDPP with assessments held at Wetherby RUFC for the Under-s. Alex Grieve, ERDPP Satellite Manager for Yorkshire Carnegie, said: I was very impressed by the standard on display at the assessments, there was some great talent on show throughout the day. I would like to say a massive thanks to the Wetherby RUFC for hosting and all the volunteers and staff that came to support. Yorkshire Carnegie s coach education programme is continuing to support school and community club coaches through its Boot Room coaching sessions. The latest session saw John Widdowson deliver a talk on his role as Match Officials Development Officer with England Rugby. John spoke to coaches to give an insight as to how referees are being developed in the game to underpin the principles of play. As a Level coach, he has taken some valuable lessons from the refereeing world and put them into practice in his coaching. Following this presentation John then spoke to the Junior Academy about how their increased knowledge of the laws of the game can make them better players. 5 RESPECT FOR REFEREES Respect for referees is at the heart of the game s core values and upholding rugby s values is everyone s responsibility. Recent high profile incidents of referee abuse have put the spotlight on rugby union s tradition of total respect for match officials. At home in England a toplevel coach was banned for his post-match TV comments about a referee and the club was threatened with a points deduction if his behaviour continued. He accepted the charge of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game. The chairman of the disciplinary panel hearing the case, Ian Unsworth QC, said that the coach s comments struck at the heart of the game s core values. The game is built upon respect. There must be respect for officials. With coaches and their players acting as role models, this case highlights a need to protect rugby s values throughout the game. At the top level respect, or the lack of it, is televised and broadcast as the face of rugby. At grassroots, respect of referees impacts playing numbers and is one reason parents choose rugby as a sport for youngsters. In the RFU s new Strategic Plan, Protect is a strategic priority for the first time. It is no longer a background assumption but placed at the forefront of how the sport will respond to the changing sports landscape and keep rugby ahead of the game. Protecting everything that makes rugby in England so special is a priority in the plan, with the intent to protect the spirit and values of the game and embrace and promote England Rugby s core values to inspire and lead success. There have certainly been cases of referees in other sports giving up because of abuse or a routine lack of respect. Rugby cannot afford to lose any of the current, referees or developers and educators. Michael Patz, RFU Match Official Development Manager, says that young players often respect the referee and are mortified when parents don t. I had a father yelling at me when I was officiating and an Under- player said I m really sorry about my dad sir. Sometimes it s the kids who educate parents who really ought to know better. Verbal abuse directed at the referee, the opposition or even their own kid s team is hugely detrimental and not the image the game needs. And it isn t only referees who need to control the playing environment, clubs also need to educate players and supporters to adopt a zero tolerance approach. RFU Head of Discipline David Barnes adds: When someone appears in front of a disciplinary panel matters have clearly gone too far. While emotions may run high and people are passionate about their team, we don t want this to negatively impact the image of the game. We are all responsible for that whether we are players, coaches or fans. Chris White, who leads the monitoring and recognition of values across the RFU s Professional Game Match Officials Team, says: Game values are discussed and reported on by the referees team and the referee coaches and observers after every single professional game. Indeed, values now form part of the official review form. Often I am delighted to say referees and observers report there were no game value issues or game values were excellent, which is what we would hope for. However, each week we raise awareness of the moments on and off field when values are challenged. We then discuss how we best respond in real time and discuss best practice as a team of officials. It should also be noted that the introduction to the laws - the spirit of the laws - talks about the responsibility lying with not one person but all coaches, players, captains and referees. One of England Rugby s professional referees, Wayne Barnes, who has been involved from the grassroots all the way through the elite level of the game says: The reason we all want to be involved in rugby, why we want our children to be involved in rugby and why sponsors want to be involved in rugby, is rugby s core values. We all therefore have a role to play in upholding those values, whether as a player reminding a team-mate, a fan reminding a fellow fan or a coach reminding a colleague; we must all play our part in keeping hold of those core values that we hold so dear. Those core values are currently being stressed at all academies and all Premiership and Championship clubs. Referees are doing their part by reinforcing that message too. Referees always aim to make the right decisions during a match but, like players and coaches, we will make mistakes too. Some referee societies, like Dorset and Wilts and North Midlands have annual Whistler Awards, recognising clubs where referees enjoy officiating because of the warm welcome and the way they are hosted. The North Midlands Referees Society has, for more than years, asked members to nominate clubs for the Society s Club of the Year Award, based on: how they were contacted by the club, prior to the game; clear directions, kick-off times; how they were greeted; the changing facilities and pitch markings and the level of respect shown by players and coaches, both during and after the game. Out of the clubs in the North Midlands referees usually nominate at least, from which a winner is selected by a points system, referees selecting their first, second and third choices. Previous winners include: Camp Hill Old Edwardians, Birmingham Exiles and Droitwich. Dorset & Wilts award the Bob Stock Trophy every year to the club most supportive of match officials. Says Vicky Muir: It s important to welcome the referee. A friendly face, small talk and a bit of support is a great thing. Our recent award winners have included: Royal Wootton Bassett, Wheatsheaf and Puddletown. Is your club somewhere that referees feel respected, valued and welcomed? Rugby Football Union. The RFU Rose and the words England Rugby are official registered trademarks of the Rugby Football Union and are subject to extensive trademark registration worldwide.

7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: RICHMOND RFC Last season was a tough one, and was more about survival for both the men s and the women s st XV sides. For both sections, this season is about consolidating themselves to their new surroundings, the men in the Championship and the women in the new Tyrrell s Premier s. The toughest pre-seasons to date - under the guidance of new S&C team, Arete Performance, which is headed by England s Tom Farrow and former Wasp Ian Taplin - ensured that Richmond were ready to hit the ground running, and a handful of new faces helped to strengthen the squad for a second crack at the Championship. Carnegie - a win that proved Richmond were here to make a statement. The British & Irish Cup somewhat stalled the season s momentum, and Nottingham took full advantage of a rusty Richmond in late October, but the two weeks that followed reignited the season. The season did not get off to the start Richmond would have hoped for, but defeats to Bedford, Ealing and Bristol had to be viewed in context - these three were all going to be near the top come the end of the Championship season, so to even take a losing bonus point against Ealing was a sign of progress. Finally, the endeavour paid off and it was fantastic to get the season started in round four this time, having gone eight games without a win in -. A - victory over Jersey was just reward for a huge defensive performance, and it was duly followed up by an away win over Rotherham Titans, then a huge victory over high-flying Yorkshire First, Doncaster were put away - on an epic Friday night, with Will Goodrick-Clarke s late try sealing victory against a side that have top-four ambitions. Then a trip to Hartpury saw Richmond win on a sodden day, with two close-range tries setting the platform and an th-minute penalty sealing the deal. A - defeat to Cornish Pirates almost came as a shock after the form Richmond had been showing in previous weeks, but thankfully the boys picked themselves up for the big derby with London Scottish when the Sky cameras came to town. Three tries were enough to see off the old enemy, Leon Brown with Jono Woodward s late length-of-the-field break sure to live long in the memory. An incredibly tough Christmas period saw defeats to the league s top two sides in Ealing and Bristol, but Richmond put in huge performances to come away with four trybonus points from both games. With the British & Irish Cup action giving Hill a chance to blood new faces, and rest injured players, the side returned to league action refreshed and ready for a big second half to the season. A losing bonus point at Jersey, and a tight victory over Rotherham, have put the side up to seventh in the league, and the side have set themselves some big targets for the remainder of the season. Richmond s seven wins to date has already surpassed last season s tally of five victories, but the side won t be resting on their laurels anytime soon. Whilst the Richmond ethos remains, and the set-up is largely unchanged since National, the modest ambitions of their first season at this level have altered, with Richmond viewing their time in the Championship as less of an experiment. Instead, it s where they want to be, hope to stay and plan to continue to compete and improve upon last year s achievements.
