1 CARNEGIE TIMES YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs ROTHERHAM TITANS SUNDAY RD DECEMBER THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE CHAMPIONSHIP PECKING ORDER UP FOR GRABS AT HALFWAY STAGE The Greene King IPA ionship reaches the halfway stage this weekend with three wins separating nine teams in a mid-table logjam. Last weekend, there were big wins for Ealing, Bristol and Bedford at the top while the basement battle went down to the final play in another dramatic weekend in the Greene King IPA ionship. Bedford produced a strong first-half display to ease past Hartpury - and consolidate their place in third in the Greene King IPA ionship. The Blues had three tries by half-time, courtesy of Camilo Parilli-Ocampo, Jarad Williams and Ed Taylor. Hartpury hit back through Iain Grieve but Rich Lane then showed quick feet to wrap up the bonus point for the home side. And there was still time for Jordan Burns to set up skipper Michael le Bourgeois for the final try of the evening. Bristol made it ten wins from ten with an eight-try, -,win over Nottingham. It was the Williams show from the home team, with diminutive fullback Jordan crossing early before namesake Rhodri chipped in with two more. Dan Thomas was another to cross twice, as did prop Jason Harris-Wright, back-row Joe Batley completing the scoring. Nottingham did manage three tries of their own, through Ben Brownlie, Darryl Veenendaal and Jordan Coghlan but came away from the game empty-handed. It was heartbreak for Rotherham who were denied a first victory of the season in the cruellest manner as Craig Holland crossed with the final play of the game for Scottish to seal a - win. The Titans had led by ten points at the break, Rhodri Davies crossing twice, with Isaac Miller having opened the scoring for the Exiles. From -, Scottish fought back with a second Miller try helping them to level the scores, and a Josh Sharp penalty put them in front. However, with seven minutes remaining Ben Foley was pulled back as he looked set to score, earning Charlie Ingall a yellow card and offering the Titans the lead. That looked set to clinch it until Holland s late intervention stunned the Titans. bounced back from last week s loss at Nottingham in fine style as they beat Doncaster -. Lewis Jones and Rayn Smid each crossed twice for the Trailfinders, who ran in eight tries in total at Vallis Way. Doncaster had actually led early thanks to a try from Charlie Foley who finished after a lovely Cam Cowell grubber. But from - it was one-way traffic, Alun Walker and then Kieran Murphy going over for the home side. James Cordy-Redden ran in the next before Jones secured the bonus point four minutes before half-time. It was more of the same in the secondhalf, Jones, Matt Cornish and Smid twice, all going over. Cowell went from provider to finisher for Doncaster but it was in vain. Yorkshire Carnegie climbed to sixth in the league with an impressive - win on the road at Jersey, prop Marc Thomas proving an unlikely hero. s good recent run came to an end at as Will Cargill finished with an -point haul in south-west London to secure a - win. Cargill had opened the scoring early with a penalty although hit back through Jono Woodward. A try from Cargill put Pirates back on the front foot only for he and Will Warden to be sin-binned. In his absence Laurence May slotted a penalty to give Pirates a - half-time lead. Dan Koster then crossed for a second Pirates try as they started to take control before Woodward went over for his second. However, Alex O Meara was able to run in a third for the Pirates which all but settled the game, Cargill finishing off the scoring with a conversion. With just one round to go until the halfway stage of the Greene King IPA championship season, Rhodri Williams of Bristol edged closer to Dean Adamson as the league s top try-scorer, as he crossed the whitewash twice against Nottingham at the weekend, bringing his total to nine for the season. The scrum-half is now just one score short of the Bedford man. Round saw tries and points scored, as well as the attendance for this season s competition surpass the, mark - in the fixture between and Hartpury College. INJURY NEWS Yorkshire Carnegie are without five players today through injury. Stevie McColl recently suffered a quad injury so has been ruled out of action for today s game. Alex Davies (wrist), Dan Sanderson (Back), Mike Cusack (Neck) and Calum Irvine (Ankle) are also still unavailable for selection. YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE BRING IN RISING STAR ATKINS FROM BATH Yorkshire Carnegie have signed -year-old full-back or winger Darren Atkins on dual registration from Aviva Premiership side Bath Rugby with immediate effect until at least the end of December. Atkins featured off the bench for Bath Rugby in their last two Aviva Premiership games and will be looking to make the most of his opportunity to play in the Greene King IPA ionship alongside fellow Bath dual registration signing Will Homer, who has made a big impression since moving to Emerald Headingley this season. Atkins was a key member of the England Under- squad this summer as they reached the Junior World ionship Final again having been part of the side that won the title in Manchester last year. He also played for England Under-s alongside Carnegie players Max Wright and Charlie Capps. Originally from Haywards Heath, he attended Millfield School and made his senior debut for Bath against Bristol last season. Commenting on the signing Head of Rugby Operations Chris Gibson said: We are pleased to have been able to bring in an exciting talent like Darren for the next few weeks. Stevie McColl suffered an injury at Jersey on Saturday that will rule him out for a couple of weeks and Chris Elder missed the win in the Channel Islands with an ankle injury so by bringing Darren in, it will give Jimmy more options with our backline. I would like to thank Bath Rugby once again for their help and we look forward to seeing how Darren can develop during his time with us. YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE TRIO MAKE MOST OF ENGLAND TRAINING CAMP OPPORTUNITY Yorkshire Carnegie Academy youngster Joe Carpenter was on familiar territory this week when he met up with the England Under- development squad for their training camp at West Park Leeds RUFC. The young full-back has played all his junior rugby since the age of six at The Sycamores and has progressed through the county ranks and into the Yorkshire Carnegie ERDPP set-up. Previously at Lawnswood School, he is now studying at Woodhouse Grove and this week was part of the national squad as they trained in Leeds. As well as familiar surroundings, he had a familiar face with him, as fellow Yorkshire Carnegie Academy member Ted Wainwright was also part of the camp. Wainwright attends Ripon Grammar School and last season captained the Yorkshire Under- rugby squad and led his school s Under- squad to the Yorkshire Cup Final. The Under-s were also joined by the Under- development squad which also included a Yorkshire Carnegie Academy player. Joe Gatus, who is Head Boy at QEGS in Wakefield, joined up with the national squad as he looks to follow in the long line of players the club has produced for the England Under- squad in recent years. There were some familiar names in the group with James Whitcombe, the son of former Leeds stalwart Martin, in the Under- group and Samson Ma asi, the son of former Carnegie hooker Vili, in the Under- group, which also included Bryan Redpath s son Cameron. 4 COMMUNITY UPDATE Today we welcome the Under- players from Selby RUFC who will be forming the Guard of Honour as the players run out and they will then take part in a training session at half-time. Our community team recently launched Project Rugby, an initiative from Premiership Rugby and England which aims to engage new audiences with rugby and stimulate a lifelong interest in the game. Project Rugby is designed to increase participation in the game by people from traditionally underrepresented groups: black, Asian and minority ethnic people, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people. The first stage of Project Rugby saw the Yorkshire Carnegie community team work in Pontefract and West Leeds to encourage more girls to get involved and this culminated in West Leeds RUFC creating their first women s team who competed in their first game last month. Following on from this success the community team will begin working with people with disabilities and they will be holding a mixed ability taster session on th December at Pontefract RUFC between.-pm. The session is open to people aged +. 7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: ROTHERHAM TITANS Following a summer of change, Rotherham Titans recruited a new coaching line-up which included former Yorkshire Carnegie Director of Rugby Andy Key as head coach, former Nottingham and London Irish second rower Nic Rouse as forwards coach and Moseley pair of Muaz Buaben (S&C) and Matt Harland (Analyst). This combined with new faces on the playing side, meant a period of time would be needed for the players to come-together and gel as a squad. This can be seen from Rotherham s tricky start to the ionship season, where the South Yorkshire side are still waiting for their first ionship victory after ten games. Among the new recruits, Titans strengthened their backline with the additions of centre Luke Peters from and scrum-half Rhodri Davies from Welsh side Llandovery, both of whom have made a significant impact for the Clifton Lane based side this term. Whilst in the pack notable additions are tight head prop Matt Shields from Premiership side Harlequins and currently serving British Army soldier and back rower, Ifereimi Boladau from London Scottish. Despite Rotherham s lack of ionship victories, they ve arguably had opportunities in the majority of their games to date, where on another day they may have run out the victors. Bad luck and indifferent decision making at times during the season has certainly played a part in their downfall. However, game on game there has generally been improvements in performance by this young Titans squad and there is a strong belief at Clifton Lane that their fortunes and results will change for the better sooner rather than later. Indeed Rotherham s recent break from the ionship saw them put in a very good display in the British & Irish Cup against Irish side Connacht Eagles. Trailing - at the break against a good Connacht outfit, Rotherham stormed back in the second-half to nil their opponents before running out worthy - winners. Rotherham arguably put in their best performance of the season against high-flying Ealing Trailfinders at Clifton Lane at the end of October. Despite losing the game -, the South Yorkshire side showed tremendous spirit and ability as they came close to causing one of the biggest upsets in the division this season. And last time out Rotherham came agonisingly close to registering their first league win of the season against, after putting in an impressive performance for much of the contest. However, in the final play of the game in the tenth minute of injurytime Scottish crossed the whitewash to break Titans hearts and secure an unlikely - win.
