1 CARNEGIE TIMES YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs EALING TRAILFINDERS TUESDAY APRIL 0 THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE BECK AGREES NEW DEAL WITH YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE Long-serving forward Richard Beck has agreed a new deal to keep him at the club and admitted the club s new Director of Rugby Chris Stirling had a big part in helping him decide to pledge his future to the club. Beck is set to become only the seventh player in the club s history to make 00 league appearances if he features in both the remaining games this season following in the footsteps of Pete Lucock earlier this season. He was due to be out of contract this summer but has now signed a new one-year deal. He revealed: I have been really impressed with Chris Stirling since he has arrived. Having met with him, I was very excited about the future and can see how he is going to take the club forward. He has massive experience from the Hurricanes in New Zealand and I asked him why he had come to Yorkshire Carnegie and was impressed by what he was wants to achieve with us and his vision for the club. He sees it as a challenge and he has a lot of drive. He has left his family in New Zealand to lead our rugby operation and wants it to be a success. That is exciting as a player to hear. We are keeping the same coaching staff which is good to build some continuity from this year and now we can add to that with Chris ideas and build on the progress we have made this year, added the -year-old. Carnegie face high flying Ealing Trailfinders tonight at Emerald Headingley and Beck says the Yorkshire players know the size of the task in front of them. He added: They will be very good as they always are. It will be tough up front and we need to make sure we sort our scrum and line out out as that is where they are strong. It will be a good test for us and we will be up for that come kick-off. We were definitely in the game for long periods down at Ealing but some sloppy mistakes from us gave them the chance to attack and they will always take advantage of that, said Beck. Yorkshire looked like they would come into the game after a morale boosting derby win at Rotherham after an hour at Clifton Lane on Saturday. However, relegated Rotherham then mounted a remarkable fight-back to snatch victory. Beck says he and his team-mates have had to put that result to bed quickly to focus on tonight s challenge. He added: It was a tough defeat to take in the end. We got ourselves points in front so to lose that is very disappointing. We showed good fight in the end to come back and we gave ourselves a chance to win it at the death, that is something we can take into Tuesday s game. Once they get on a roll it is hard to stop. The crowd get behind them and you tend to find that when a side has the momentum, decisions tend to go their way because they are on the front foot. It is really tricky to stop but it should have been in the bag when we got points in front and we were frustrated that we allowed them a way back into the game. We wanted to finish third and that was our goal going into the last three games of the season. We are back at Emerald Headingley tonight and it is good that we have a short turnaround from the game against Ealing. We want to finish the season with two wins at home for all the guys who are leaving in the summer and we want to end on a positive. After the game Jimmy told us to be disappointed but as soon as we leave the dressing room, all our focus needs to be on Ealing and turning things around on Tuesday. There is not enough time for us to be moping around and feeling sorry for ourselves. We are straight back into it and we can not afford to have any hangover from Saturday tonight. 3 CLUB NEWS WEEKLY MIXED ABILITY SESSIONS AT PONTEFRACT RUFC Yorkshire Carnegie s community department are running weekly mixed ability sessions at Pontefract RUFC every Thursday between 0am -.0noon. The open training sessions are free to attend and are open to players of all abilities and those who have never played the game before. The sessions are followed by a chance to socialise with other players. The sessions follow work by the Yorkshire Carnegie community team over the past few months in providing accessible rugby sessions to traditionally under-represented groups. The aim is to then transition new players and volunteers into Pontefract RUFC, one of Yorkshire s grassroots rugby clubs. The delivery is part of Project Rugby, an initiative from Premiership Rugby, which aims to engage new audiences with rugby and stimulate a lifelong interest in the game. Project Rugby is designed to increase participation in the game by people from traditionally underrepresented groups: black, Asian and minority ethnic people, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and people with disabilities. For more information on the Mixed Ability sessions community@ yorkshirecarnegie. com or call Sam Kerry on 0 WEST JOINS EALING This week it was announced that Ben West has signed for Ealing Trailfinders for the 0- season. The second-rower has made Yorkshire Carnegie appearances since arriving in 0, joining mid-way through the 0- season from London Welsh, and has since been virtually ever-present The -year-old played over 0 times for Welsh and helped them win promotion in the 0- season as well as lift the British & Irish Cup in 0. THE NEW LOOK YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE AND LEEDS RHINOS SUPPORTERS BOARD IS RECRUITING! In February 0, the Leeds Rugby Fans Forum was launched, with the aim of shaping a positive future for the club and its dedicated fans. The Leeds Rugby Fans Forum has now been in operation for nearly six years and, based on feedback and ideas from the fans, has influenced several changes within the club. This year we have decided that the Fans Forum would benefit from a re-fresh. We have had a change of name to one which we feel better represents the purpose of the group and are planning the future direction of the group to provide more presence and solutions in and around the club. The meetings will now be scheduled as individual code meetings with one annual Christmas joint meeting for both Yorkshire Carnegie and Leeds Rhinos. With these changes, we are looking to recruit new members to join the groups and plan the future actions of the Supporters Boards. As a board member, you would be required to attend scheduled meetings at Emerald Headingley Stadium to discuss feedback from fans and yourself. It is a great way to meet fellow passionate supporters and hear from all sides of the club! You will need to commit to act as an advisory role to the club which will require communication and potential consultations outside the arranged Supporters Board meetings. We are looking for enthusiastic Leeds Rugby Fans, be it Yorkshire Carnegie or Leeds Rhinos or both, who are motivated to shape the future of your club. Representatives on the Supporters Boards will be volunteers who want to improve the future of Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie. Each representative will be a representative on the Supporters Board for the minimum of a year, with the power to step down at any time after the initial year. We are looking to bring the supporters experience at Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie to the next level. We aim to establish a voice for all our supporters, to give you an input along with explanations behind decisions made at the club. We want to maintain the success Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie has had over previous years working with fans. Please note that the board members only work towards activity off the field, not activity on the field. The application deadline is pm on Friday th May 0. Pick up an application form from the Club Shop at Emerald Headingley Stadium or alternatively please download from or For any further information of queries please contact Jessica Ives on 0 0 or jessica. ives@leedrugby.com. 5 NEW WARRIORS HELP GAME S STRONG GROWTH The next wave of England Rugby s Inner Warrior campaign launched this month, after a successful series of Warrior Camps in 0 and January 0 gave a huge boost to grassroots women s rugby participation. The new season of Warrior Camps kicked off on th April and runs until th April with 00 rugby taster sessions taking place at clubs across the country. The current campaign coincides with the rugby sevens tournament at the Commonwealth Games, where women took part for the first time ever and England secured a bronze medal. The RFU have recently announced that there are now 0,000 registered female rugby players playing regularly. The Inner Warrior campaign is encouraging new women to get active outdoors this spring and challenge themselves to take up a new sport. England Sevens captain Abbie Brown commented: We re excited about the opportunity to play at the Commonwealth Games for the first time and will be looking to make the country proud. The Inner Warrior campaign gives women the chance to try rugby, often for the first time, and it s fantastic to see so many women getting involved - we hope our performances in Australia can inspire more to get outdoors and try our sport. Since its initial launch, over,00 women have attended Warrior Camps nationwide; and of those women,,00 had never picked up a rugby ball before. The number of camps available to women has continued to grow to meet demand and the influx of players saw new female contact rugby club teams established in 0. Steve Grainger, RFU Rugby Development Director, said: Female participation in rugby has seen unparalleled levels of growth in recent years, and we were delighted to announce, on International Women s Day, that there are now 0,000 women and girls playing regularly. Rugby is one of the fastest growing team sports for women in England. As part of the 0- funding agreement with Sport England and our Women and Girls Action Plan, the RFU is looking to significantly expand the number of women and girls participating in grassroots rugby across England, and the Warrior Camps are instrumental in supporting this growth. The Inner Warrior campaign aims to encourage more women and girls to play contact rugby, teaching participants key introductory skills and drills for rugby within a non-committal, social and fun environment. The April Warrior Camps launched with a digital campaign and continuation of the 0 brand creative that shows everyday women from various walks of life, bursting out of their work uniforms into their rugby training kit, metaphorically freeing their inner warrior. 7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: EALING TRAILFINDERS Ealing Trailfinders have had an excellent season as they continue to build as a club towards an exciting future. Ben Ward s side have confirmed that they will finish second in the Greene King IPA Championship with wins from their 0 league matches. The West Londoners will be looking to finish the season as strongly as possible with the chance of silverware courtesy of the British & Irish Cup as well as looking to close the gap on promoted Bristol. The campaign began at home against Cornish Pirates on the first weekend of September, where a nailbiting - win ensured that they started the season with a victory. Wins over Richmond and Bedford followed before meeting London Scottish in front of the Sky Sports cameras, and a strong attacking display resulted in a - win. A trip to Ashton Gate followed to take on league-leaders Bristol, and a last gasp try denied the Trailfinders a famous victory as Pat Lam s side edged out a thriller -. Jersey, Rotherham and Yorkshire Carnegie were put to the sword before a slip up at Nottingham saw a five-match winning streak come to an end, as a last minute Tiff Eden penalty gave Ian Costello s team a - win. Since that defeat in mid- November the Trailfinders have been in great form and saved some of their best rugby for the festive period. Wins over Doncaster and Hartpury got them back on track before a hard-fought victory against Richmond on rd December made it a happy Christmas for the supporters. They then made the trip to Goldington Road to face Bedford Blues, and in one of the games of the season so far, they came from -0 down to record a memorable - win in the final match of 0. With just 0 minutes remaining and an -point deficit to overturn it looked like a step too far, but tries from Luke Carter, Barney Maddison and a penalty try meant they left with the narrowest of wins. 0 started positively for the Trailfinders, a -try win over Connacht in the B&I Cup secured a place in the quarter-finals, and a -0 victory against Richmond at the Athletic Ground rounded off the pool stages in style. The Championship returned with a - win over London Scottish, before the big top of the table showdown with Bristol at Vallis Way. Despite a late rally in a monstrous performance they eventually fell - as Bristol left with the narrowest of victories. The Trailfinders got back to winning ways in Jersey with a win that was described by Head Coach Alex Codling as the best victory of the season. Four tries ensured a - triumph on the Channel Island just six days after the Bristol match. A sensational comeback followed, which saw them come from - down against Rotherham to register a - win thanks to an st-minute penalty from Luke Daniels. They then beat Nottingham - 0 at Vallis Way, a six-try performance putting Ian Costello s men to the sword. A slip up in their last away match saw Doncaster prevail at Castle Park, but they got back to winning ways on Saturday with a dominant nine try win over Hartpury, where they had the try bonus point secured within the first minutes. The West Londoners have also qualified for the knockout stages of the British & Irish Cup. Six wins from six in the pool against Richmond, Connacht and Rotherham meant that the Green and Whites were top seeds, and after a home quarter-final victory over Cornish Pirates last weekend, they welcome Bedford Blues for the semifinal on Saturday.
