1 CARNEGIE TIMES YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs LONDON SCOTTISH SATURDAY, APRIL 0 THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE BUSY WEEK AS PLANS FOR NEW CAMPAIGN TAKE SHAPE It has been a busy week behind the scenes at Yorkshire Carnegie ahead of the final game of the season this afternoon against London Scottish. Nine players have committed to new contracts with several more still in negotiation as we look to build on the progress made this season. s Marc Thomas and James Thraves are joined by hooker Joe Buckle (pictured) in committing their future to the club whilst longstanding squad members Matt Smith and Mike Myerscough have all agreed new contracts for the 0- season. Myerscough and Smith both joined Yorkshire Carnegie in 0 from Cornish Pirates and will start their seventh campaign with the club next season. Cornishman Myerscough has made appearances for the club whilst Smith, who is originally from Halifax, has now amassed appearances since 0 in all competitions. Director of Rugby Chris Stirling commented: A key part of our squad building for next season was to retain those players within our current squad who we believe can give us an edge next season in a very competitive Greene King IPA Championship. That is particularly true in our forwards. Having already announced new deals with Richard Mayhew and Richard Beck, we are delighted to have agreed new deals with all five of these players. Both Marc and Joe were highly sought after by other clubs and we are pleased that they are keen to continue the journey with Yorkshire Carnegie after their first season at Emerald Headingley. Mike Myerscough and Matt Smith are long-serving members of our squad and have shown all the attributes we are looking for, both on and off the pitch, for our group moving forward and it is pleasing that they will remain with us next season, added Stirling. In the backs, the talented quartet of Chris Wolfe-Elder, Pete Lucock, George Watkins and Andy Forsyth have all agreed new deals with Yorkshire Carnegie for next season s Greene King IPA Championship campaign. Wolfe-Elder is the club s leading try scorer this season with tries in appearances in all competitions. Lucock made his debut for Carnegie back in 0 and this season became only the sixth player ever in the club s history to make 00 league appearances for the club. Huddersfield-born Forsyth returned to the club back in 0 from Leicester Tigers having originally been developed in the Carnegie Academy. He is a virtual ever-present this season, missing just one game in the Greene King IPA Championship. George Watkins joined Yorkshire Carnegie this year from Jersey Reds and has impressed in his first campaign. Commenting on the new deals, Stirling said: We are delighted to have agreed new deals with all four players. We are looking to continue to play an attractive brand of rugby next season and all four of these players have shown how well they can perform within our system. There have been a host of new faces unveiled as well. Yorkshire Carnegie have bolstered their back line for next season with the signings of -year-old fly-half Brendan Cope from Greene King IPA Championship rivals Jersey Reds and scrum-half JB Bruzulier,, from French club Nevers. Welshman Bruzulier has experience in the Greene King IPA Championship having helped Worcester Warriors to promotion back in 0. He captained the Warriors in their British & Irish Cup triumph that season and played in both legs of the Championship Play-off Final win over Bristol. The club have also bolstered the pack with the signing of props Ewan McQuillin from London Scottish, Rowan Jenkins from Ospreys and Canadian Jake Inicki from Newcastle Falcons. 3 CLUB NEWS NEW DIRECTOR OF RUGBY SAYS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AT YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE IS IN A STRONG POSITION On Saturday st April Yorkshire Carnegie s Under- s represented the club for the first time in their development journey. The players, who competed in a festival at Silcoates School against Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons, had been identified from the ERDPP programme, through training and playing festivals, and had several training opportunities under their belts to be able to identify their team strengths, how they wished to be seen as a team and what they were going to measure success as. Chris Stirling, Director of Rugby for Yorkshire Carnegie, was present at the festival and enthused for the future of the club. It was a very enjoyable day attending the Under-s festival at Silcoates School, Stirling said. The young talent on display was of a very high standard and combined with the great work from the Academy staff and support from parents it is clear that youth development at the club is in a strong position. I very much look forward to watching this talent develop, come through and push for top level rugby at the club. The players had identified strengths of: supporting the player with the ball, decision making of how to move the ball to critical space, intensity, work rate on and off the ball and physicality at the contact area. From these strengths the players had then come up with a number of key performance indicators on how to measure success. Yorkshire Carnegie player Ollie Fox, who has come through the club s Academy system and now coaches with the Academy was pleased with the players learning. It was great to see the lads finally match up against Falcons and Sharks, Fox said. This was a valuable learning experience for them in their first taste of Academy rugby. The format of the day was festival based where two -a-side teams from each Academy played the teams from the other Academies - in total four 0 minutes games were played by each team and overall the coaches were delighted with the performances of the players. Luke Pendlebury, Academy Coach for Yorkshire Carnegie, enthused: It was fantastic to see all the players put their aims and objectives into such fast, competitive rugby and come out on top in so many areas. There were also lots of great discussions and feedback given from the injured players on the day who acted as the team coaches. The Under-s group will now regroup, analyse the games against their measures of success, identify how they can grow their strengths ready for the RFU -a-side festival on Monday th May at Sheffield Hallam against other Academy teams. The highlights show the real potential of this talented group of players and we are looking forward to seeing this more over the next few years. 4 BECK SET TO JOIN ELITE 00 CLUB Yorkshire Carnegie forward Richard Beck is set to become only the seventh player in the club s history to make 00 league starts for the club when James Lowes side conclude their Greene King IPA Championship season on Saturday at Emerald Headingley against London Scottish. Beck follows on from team-mate Pete Lucock who reached the landmark achievement back in November at Ealing Trailfinders and follows in a rich tradition of club stalwarts. The previous six to make 00 league starts for the club are: MIKE SHELLEY () Leeds legend who became the longest-serving player ever in the history of Leeds having joined the club in from West Hartlepool. Mike had been the pack leader for a number of years but was given the added responsibility of captain for the season, a role he continued until the 00-0 season. The 00-0 campaign saw Mike surpass the 00 appearance mark for the Tykes and he experienced one of his proudest moments for the club when he lifted the Powergen Cup after the Tykes win over Bath at Twickenham. Mike was a loyal servant to the club and to many epitomised the Tykes. At the end of the 00-0 season, despite being due a well earned testimonial, Mike made the decision to retire after 0 years and appearances for the club in all competitions. TOM PALMER () Tom first came to Leeds to begin a University degree but was soon spotted by director of rugby Phil Davies, at his first game playing for the University. Tom made his debut against Blackheath on nd September. He was the club s first England international and became the club s youngest captain in 00. In the 00-0 season Tom s passion and commitment to the Tykes paid off when he collected his Powergen Cup winner s medal. Tom left the club at the end of a disappointing season for the club in 00 when the side were relegated from the Premiership. In total Tom played games for the club and scored 0 tries. He was still playing professionally in France up until last season. RYAN BURROWS (0) Former skipper Ryan Burrows left Yorkshire Carnegie last season to join Aviva Premiership side Newcastle Falcons. Ryan joined the club in 0 from Rotherham and twice won the Player of the Year award. Ryan was incredibly loyal to Yorkshire Carnegie during his time at the club, turning down a number of opportunities to play in the Premiership in the hope of leading the club to promotion. MARK LUFFMAN () Mark played first-team games for Leeds at hooker of which came in the starting line-up in the league. He scored a vital try in the win over Worcester that effectively sealed promotion to the Premiership. Mark is also noteworthy as the club s first ever try scorer in Europe, with his effort in Parma in 00. He made his debut in the - season against his former club Otley, when Leeds were competing in National and was part of the team s successful rise through the divisions. ROB RAWLINSON (0) The third front rower on the list, Rob played at Emerald Headingley for over a decade. In his ten years at the club he helped the team achieve promotion to the top-flight three times and was a Powergen Cup winner in 00. Rawly joined the club in early August from Orrell, and played under Phil Davies, Stuart Lancaster and Neil Back during his time at the club. He was the first ever player at the club to receive a testimonial. PETER LUCOCK (0 PRIOR TO LONDON SCOTTISH ON TH APRIL 0) Lucock holds a unique position in the club s history as the only player to ever come from the club s mini rugby section when it used to be run out of Chandos Park at the formation of the club. He agreed a new deal with the club this week and has been a virtual everpresent this season. A Leeds-lad, Lucock made his Carnegie debut against Rotherham in 0 having been promoted to the senior squad ahead of the Championship season.

5 CARNEGIE S PROJECT RUGBY DELIVERY HELPS BREAK DOWN BARRIERS AND IMPROVE CONFIDENCE As part of the Project Rugby initiative, Yorkshire Carnegie s community team have been delivering Mixed Ability rugby across the county since May 0. to every session. I feel that rugby has helped me build my confidence enough so that I feel able to come out of my shell and be myself around other people and not be worried about what other people think. I have also found that it has helped me meet new people and make new friends. Mixed Ability rugby encourages able-bodied and disabled athletes to participate together in full contact rugby, regardless of their disability. The aim is for individuals to develop their rugby skills and also to break down barriers that a disability can cause. One of the clubs Yorkshire Carnegie have been working with is Leeds Corinthians. The club along with International Mixed Ability Sports have supported individuals in their development and their integration into the club. One person who has benefited from the support is Lee Robbins, who has Autism and learning difficulties, and is one of the founding members of the Leeds Corinthians Mixed Ability Team. Lee attended the very first Yorkshire Carnegie Mixed Ability training session at Leeds Corinthians and since then his love for the sport has grown and is the driving force behind the creation of the team. Lee has progressed from the beginners training sessions to the development group and to the club training sessions. Speaking to Lee about why he plays rugby, he said: I really love rugby and being part of a team, I look forward The person that has seen the most development in Lee is his mother Janet who brings him to every session. When asked how Mixed Ability Rugby has had an impact on Lee, she said: I think that Mixed Ability Rugby has really helped Lee find his feet. Over the past year I have seen a new side to Lee, he has become more confident and started to come out of his shell. It is a fantastic environment full of caring and patient individuals helping him to get fit, make new friends and play the sport he now loves. Sam Kerry, Community Coach for Yorkshire Carnegie, added: When Lee first started his confidence and self-esteem was very low, he barely wanted to get involved and was quite a shy individual. As the sessions passed his confidence grew and so did the smile on his face. With this he started to engage more within the sessions. Having attended every session since the start he has become very passionate about the sport, even to the extent that he wants to now start contributing to the coaching of the side. Project Rugby is a grassroots project run by the RFU and Premiership Rugby to increase participation and opportunities for communities. Project Rugby aims to reach more than,000 participants by providing accessible opportunities to play rugby in 00 community locations across England, transitioning new players and volunteers into local grassroots rugby clubs. 7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: LONDON SCOTTISH It has been a tough season for the Scots at the Richmond Athletic Ground. It all began with an exciting summer for supporters and players alike. This positive feeling was further amplified when Yorkshire Carnegie visited the RAG on the opening day of the season. It was a glorious sunny day and the Scots were firing on all cylinders. They came away with their first victory of the season and did so in convincing fashion, completely out playing the talented Yorkshire side. However, unfortunately things did not carry on with the same amount of positive consistency after that respectable win. Scottish faced a tough run of games and could not rekindle the fine form they exhibited on the opening day. A very resounding loss to Ealing Trailfinders, live on Sky Sports, was a particular low point in the season. However, the Scots found themselves very unlucky on numerous occasions narrowly losing to Nottingham at home -and losing to Hartpury with the final play of the game, a game they had controlled throughout. However, when Cornish Pirates came to the RAG in late November for the first Friday night lights of the season, Scottish got their season somewhat back on track. A bumper crowd of,00 supporters descended onto the RAG for a great evening of rugby and entertainment. Scottish put in a fine performance on the field and successfully achieved their second win of the season. They followed this result up with another strong win against bottom of the table side Rotherham Titans. Things were suddenly starting to look up for the Scots. As Christmas approached, Bedford were welcomed to town. All supporters who came down to that game were treated to an attacking spectacle. The game finished - with both sides playing some sumptuous rugby, a real Christmas delight. An impressive result against a team who were third in the league at the time. Just after the festive period the Scots managed to grab their fourth win of the season and their first win away from The Athletic Ground. The squad headed to inform Nottingham just before the turn of the New Year and on a wet and windy day at Lady Bay had to dig in to beat the Green and Whites - to end 0 on a high note. 0 has not been prosperous for the Scots with heavy losses to champions Bristol, Jersey Reds and the Cornish Pirates compounded with some tight losses to Hartpury and Ealing Trailfinders all amounting to Scottish sitting in th place behind the rest of the pack. Yet, as the season began to come to a close and the weather started to improve, London Scottish s form experienced an exponential upturn. They dispatched Rotherham at the RAG - with a clinical display that would have challenged any side in the league. The following week was the South West London derby. Richmond were the hosts and Scottish had a score to settle after losing in the final play, yet again, to their rivals via an interception try. This time round it was a hard-fought derby, as to be expected. With both sides desperate to own the bragging rights until next season. A last minute Jake Sharp penalty snatched victory for the Scots, a monumental win, 0- to Scottish, a deserved result for a side who have been short on luck this season. Heading into the final week of the season and an away trip to Yorkshire Carnegie, a team they have beaten twice already this year, Scottish can still finish ninth in the Championship table, a better standing than last season.
