1 CARNEGIE TIMES YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs JERSEY REDS SATURDAY JANUARY THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE RUGBY UNION CLUB ISSUE ACADEMY GRADUATE BOYCE NAMED IN ENGLAND TEAM Former Yorkshire Carnegie Academy graduate Lewis Boyce has been called up by England coach Eddie Jones for the opening game of the RBS Six Nations against Italy. Boyce could become the ninth Academy graduate to go on to achieve full England international honours. The club has produced countless England Under- and Under- players over the years, with Boyce memorably forming an all Carnegie front row in the England Under-s a couple of years ago alongside Paul Hill and Jack Walker. He will be joined in the England squad by another former Academy graduate in Danny Care, his Harlequins club captain. Care is the most capped academy graduate of all time, with caps already before this year s Six Nations. Tom Palmer was the first in, followed by Care and Jordan Crane (), Rob Webber (), Luther Burrell (), Calum Clark (), Paul Hill () and Alex Lozowski (). Boyce joined Aviva Premiership side Harlequins this summer after nearly a decade at Yorkshire Carnegie. Since taking up the game at the age of with Acklam, a club based in his hometown of Middlesbrough, Biyce has been a player with outstanding talent. Boyce attended Prince Henry s Grammar School and was part of the AASE scheme at the school, as well as helping a new generation of players find their way on the Yorkshire Carnegie pathway and coached on the England Rugby Developing Player Programme (ERDPP). His professionalism since joining Carnegie impressed the Academy coaches and in he was given his debut against Rotherham. He spent three seasons in the first-team squad before leaving this summer. Speaking about Boyce s call-up, Ben Lazenby, Yorkshire Carnegie s Academy Manager, said: This is a fantastic achievement for Lewis and we are all very proud of him. Lewis came into our Academy from a young age and was part of the successful AASE team at Prince Henry s before making an impact in our Academy when he was named Player of the Season. He then went onto feature regularly for the firstteam and was part of the Under- s World Cup-winning squad in. This is a great success for our Academy and the set-up we have, which shows a clear pathway from junior rugby through to playing at an international level. On behalf of everyone at the club we would like to wish Lewis the best for the upcoming Six Nations with England. Loosehead Boyce is one of eight uncapped players initially named in the -man group and told The Yorkshire Post this week: There had been a few rumours going around I d be in it but I never really listened to them. I was never tipped off or anything like that so when I saw my name on that squad list I was just totally speechless really. It was only eight months ago that Boyce was playing for Carnegie in the Championship Final against London Irish, so his progress has certainly been rapid. That said, he is not the only player to emerge from the club s revered Academy and quickly climb the ladder. Fellow prop Paul Hill made his Test debut against Italy two years ago just months after leaving Headingley for Premiership Northampton Saints. It s a massive buzz for me to see my mates like Hilly and Jack Walker - who moved to Bath - doing so well, he said. I almost grew up with those lads in the Academy system at Carnegie. I actually scrummaged against Hilly the other week in the Big Game (at Twickenham) which was a weird feeling but a real honour at the same time. People like Andy Rock and Jon Pendlebury all played a big part in my development at Carnegie in the Academy and then there was some great physios too, who got me out on the pitch after a serious knee injury. 3 CLUB NEWS WELCOME FROM SCARBOROUGH RUGBY CLUB The Board of Directors and members of Scarborough Rugby Club are honoured to once again host one of Yorkshire Carnegie s On the Road British & Irish Cup matches. We are delighted to welcome Yorkshire Carnegie back with us today and we d also like to welcome Jersey Reds and their supporters. We wish both sides the best of luck in today s match and hope that everyone enjoys another action-packed afternoon of professional rugby. It s been another busy year for Scarborough Rugby Club and as you may have seen on your way in, work is currently underway to add to our great facilities with the construction of four new glass-backed squash courts and a new juice bar and cafe, both of which will be operational by the summer. On the rugby front, on Saturday th May we ll be hosting Yorkshire RFU when they take on Northumberland RFU in the Bill Beaumont Cup and this year we will also welcome Yorkshire and Northumberland Ladies, who will play their County Championship match as a curtain-raiser for the men s game. These high-profile events and others help to ensure that the club can continue to grow and develop and allows the club to fulfil its objective of encouraging and inspiring as many people as possible to play rugby union in a safe and financially secure environment. We hope that everyone enjoys our east coast hospitality. STUDENTS GET ENGLAND CALL-UP Xavier Valentine and winger Harry Robinson are two of six Leeds Beckett students named in the England Students training squad ahead of their double fixture with France Students in April. Valentine made his third appearance for Yorkshire Carnegie in last weekend s game at London Scottish, whilst Robinson made a try-scoring debut against the Dragons Premiership Select at Huddersfield YMCA. Valentine and Robinson are joined by Leeds Beckett teammates Conrad Cade, James Elliot, Ryan Eveleigh and Dan Kelly in the -man squad. The callups for the half dozen Beckett students comes after an improved season for Kerry Wood s side. After a very tough season last year, Beckett would have been seeking a stronger campaign this time around and, so far, they are achieving their aim. With Beckett being points off second-placed Northumbria, whilst also having two games in hand, four teams could seriously be in with a shout of topping BUCS Super Rugby. England Students Head Coach Aaron James was impressed with the youngsters skill set and ability to bond as a team in a small amount of time, crediting the competition as ideal preparation for France. BUCS Super Rugby has resulted in a higher level of play, which will boost England Students chances against a French side boasting HARRY ROBINSON players of professional standards, he added. The competition has taken another step up this year, and the guys will benefit from that. The standard has to be very high to play France. We need to be at a National One standard or above. 4 CLUB NEWS STADIUM DEVELOPMENT PROGRESSING WELL The busy schedule of activity on both the South Stand and Main Stand continues at Emerald Headingley. The South Stand construction continues at pace, with the steel and pre-cast concrete sections slotting into place whilst drainage works continue both behind the stand and on pitch side. Preparations have now begun for the concrete concourse areas underneath the stand. High above those works, the roof safety measures are being completed in readiness for roof installation. Opposite the South Stand, keen viewers of the live SMUK.co.uk webcams will have spotted a great deal of preparation work still going on for the North Stand. With the stand sandwiched in between both playing surfaces, work on the stand s foundations are obviously a huge part of the project at this stage for such a large stand. Drainage works have continued and we have commenced preparations for the platform for the temporary stand and other temporary measures that will be in place for the new Leeds Rhinos season. The temporary stand will not be used for Yorkshire Carnegie s last three home games and we will continue to use just the Carnegie Stand for all games this season. Remember you can follow live updates on both construction sites with our live SMUK.co.uk webcams by visiting our YouTube channel. UNDER-s MISS OUT IN NAIL-BITING GAME AGAINST WORCESTER Yorkshire Carnegie s Under-s lost out to Warriors Under-s through a last-minute penalty in a close game in the Premiership Rugby Under- Academy League at Sixways. Carnegie opened the season with a win against Newcastle and looked like they were heading for a second victory after a strong performance saw them build a - lead, but for the second time in as many weeks, Warriors came back in the secondhalf to win in the dying moments. Carnegie were the first to strike through James Willis, driving over after a penalty was kicked to the corner, making the score -. Warriors response came when Noah Heward collected the ball on the -metre line and he evaded the Carnegie defenders before rounding the last line of defence to touchdown. With just minutes remaining in the first period, Warriors did gain the advantage as some slick handling down the left wing put White close, before Oli Thorneywork powered over from closerange to give Warriors a - advantage. Carnegie retook the lead, this time sending the ball wide and their offloads down the left flank found support runners as full-back Joe Carpenter crossed the tryline. Dan Lancaster s conversion was the last action of the first-half as Carnegie led -. In the second-half, Worcester had a man sent to the sin bin and Carnegie capitalised when Andre Robson cut a fantastic line from set-piece ball to score under the posts, with Lancaster converting. The Warriors found an extra gear when it mattered and Heward darted through several tackles before he was dragged down five metres out. After some quick phases and scramble defence from Carnegie, Heward himself finished his second, taking the score to -. Josh Phipps conversion put the Warriors two points behind and with the clock ticking down they earned a penalty, which Phipps slotted over to put his side ahead -. But before the hosts could celebrate, Carnegie were awarded a penalty just inside the Warriors half and Lancaster stepped up admirably, but could not find the distance with the clock already past minutes and time up. The Under-s were back in action today against Wasps and they will return to action in February against Northampton at Shaw Lane. 5 BRITISH & IRISH CUP SPOTS STILL UP FOR GRABS Today s sees the final round of games in the pool stages and four teams, including Yorkshire Carnegie, are still battling for the final two places in the quarterfinals. Our opponents today, Jersey Reds, and secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with their bonus-point wins last week. They, along with Pool winners Leinster A, are assured of a home game in the last eight following their penultimate games in the pool. notched up tries in a sensational home display as they surged into the quarter-finals with an emphatic victory over Connacht. Will Harries was the star of the show as he scored a hat-trick at Vallis Way, along with a double from Luke Carter to sweep aside their Irish opponents. Miles Mantella, Alun Walker, Joe Munro, Morgan Allen, Dan Temm, Rhys Lawrence and Lewis Jones also scored as Ealing secured their place in the last eight of the competition. Jersey Reds secured top spot in Pool with an emphatic victory over a young Dragons side. An early penalty try was followed by hooker Nick Selway dotting down twice, both from the back of a driving maul, to open up a - lead at the break. And after flanker Taine Basham was sin-binned for the Dragons, the Reds asserted their dominance as Jason Worrall steamed over before replacement prop Roy Godfrey followed suit. Lock Jerry Sexton finished a fine move to complete the rout and make it five wins from five for the Reds. The other English team guaranteed to qualify is Bedford Blues, although they will need to win at home to Nottingham this weekend to secure top spot in their pool ahead of rivals Munster A, who face the winless Ospreys at home. Regardless of this weekend s results both teams will progress to the knockout stages, having won four of their five games so far. Doncaster Knights could have secured their spot last weekend but a high-scoring loss at home to Bristol means they have a tough task on their hands as they travel to Dublin to face Leinster A in their final pool game. If they gain nothing from their trip to the Irish capital that will open the door for Cornish Pirates and Yorkshire Carnegie, who are level with the Knights on points after five rounds, and Connacht Eagles who are on two points but face Rotherham at home. Cornish Pirates are still in with a chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the competition but lost ground on Pool leaders Ulster at Shaw s Bridge. Alex O Meara was the only one to dot down for the Pirates three minutes after half-time as braces from Rob Lyttle and captain Rob Andrew, and a dot down from Zack McCall, secured the bonus-point victory for the hosts. The sides had been level pegging heading into the huge contest but Ulster A now sit five points clear of the Pirates. The Greene King IPA Championship side host Hartpury RFC in their final match needing victory to give themselves any chance of progressing to the last eight. London Scottish came from behind to stun fellow Greene King IPA Championship side Yorkshire Carnegie -. Captain Isaac Miller led the charge for Scottish as he notched up two tries with Joe Luca- Smith and Nick Also rumbling over to secure victory. Carnegie will feel they missed out on a crucial victory as they dotted down three times through Mike Myerscough, Josh Bainbridge and Andy Forsyth. The result leaves London Scottish three points behind Carnegie with one match to play in Pool. REGULATION RE QUALIFIERS.. 7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: JERSEY REDS Jersey Reds headed into looking to improve their standing in the Greene King IPA Championship, as well as making their mark in the British & Irish Cup, writes Tom Innes. The Championship season kicked off at the start of September against Doncaster Knights, the Reds conceding two late penalties to go down to a - home defeat. Successive wins over league new boys Hartpury and old rivals the Pirates put a spring back in the Jersey step, but the league campaign then faltered with four successive defeats. Narrow reverses at Richmond and at home to Bedford were followed by more one-sided matches against the top two sides in the table, Ealing and Bristol. November began with a long-awaited league win, a narrow - home success over Scottish, with Jersey overturning a six-point half-time deficit to claim the points, and a record Championship points margin in victory at Rotherham by -. There was disappointment with a - home defeat eat by Yorkshire Carnegie, but since that reverse in late November the Reds have been undefeated. That run has stretched to six games, including three close-fought ought Championship outings: a draw at Nottingham, a home win over Hartpury and most recently a - success in Penzance against the Pirates on New Year s Eve. The Reds are currently eighth in the Championship table, having actually picked Leon Brown up more league points () on their travels than on home turf () so far this season, but know that the top half of the table is within reach. Although he s on record as saying that the Championship is his team s top priority, as the primary means of measuring success, Head Coach Harvey Biljon also has a glint in his eye at the prospect of silverware in the British & Irish Cup. The South African, who marks four years in the post this month, won the trophy during his time as Assistant Coach at Cornish Pirates and would like to get his hands on it again. The Reds reached the knockout stages in both - and last season, finally missing out courtesy of two agonising one-point defeats: - at Emerald Headingley in a semi-final against Carnegie back in March, and - last April against Munster A at Irish Independent Park in Cork. The Island side made a positive start to this year s B&I campaign, with maximum points from October games against Carnegie and the Dragons Select, and then a comprehensive - win over Scottish at Stade Santander International in round three, in which the hosts outscored the Exiles by seven tries to one. The return match in Richmond began as a much closer affair. The Reds led the Scots by just a point at half-time, but then added points in the second-half to win -. And Jersey made it five-from-five last weekend with a - win over the visiting Dragons. The Reds winning cup run so far has already guaranteed a home quarter-final to be played over the Easter weekend, but they ll be looking to extend the run in order to secure the highestpossible seeding which could mean another home tie in the last four - although this is far from assured and of course demands a quarter-final win.
