With returning to the ionship following relegation from the Premiership, and Hartpury College the other new side after promotion from National League One, Melville is confident the competition, which has removed the end-of-season play-offs for the coming season, will be as competitive as ever. It s a balance, you want old veterans and you want your young players in there, it brings life to the competition because people want to watch these young guys play, Melville explained. Everyone likes to watch the future and the ionship is where the future is and I think that s a great opportunity. It s about development, evolving players for England, getting the young guys into the environment and the same for referees. It s a very competitive league and this year is going to be exciting. The RFU have confirmed that they have renewed their partnership with Greene King IPA to sponsor the league for a further three seasons. This is a very exciting time for the Greene King IPA ionship and we are delighted that Greene King IPA has committed to support the competition for three more seasons, said RFU CEO Ian Ritchie. Extending our relationship with Greene King IPA is another fantastic step forward on our mission to continue improving the league, and to have such an established brand like Greene King IPA invest in the competition is a real credit to the clubs and their continued efforts to drive this competition forward. George Johnston, marketing director of Greene King IPA, added: Greene King IPA has been a supporter of rugby from grassroots to world class levels for a number of years and community and hospitality are extremely important to us, so the work that the RFU has been doing to put the fans at the heart of the ionship is very much in-line with our own values. We are proud to extend our title partnership of this respected competition and we look forward to continuing to build a great relationship with the RFU, the clubs and all of the supporters over the seasons ahead. The ionship has also adopted a new strapline, Raising The Game, and a new website for the competition has been launched. It s an opportunity to get our product in front of our fans, to get them engaged with the website and involve them with the ionship rather than going through third parties, added Melville. I love this time of year, all the coaches are positive, the players are positive, no referee has had a bad game and it s all very exciting and this year it s very competitive. From our point of view the new look and feel we ve brought to the ionship, new teams and new faces, that s very exciting." The RFU has made a commitment to enhance its content, marketing and communications support for the competition throughout the 7- season and beyond. The new brand identity includes a new logo and look and feel and will be used across all marketing and communications channels and materials used to promote the Greene King IPA ionship. In addition, the RFU has committed to live stream up to games this season, which will be hosted on the new website along with the England Rugby social media channels. 3 CLUB NEWS DAVID PAYNE RIP It is with much sadness that we learned of the death of David Payne following a short illness. David was a great friend of the club and commentated on Carnegie games for many years with Leeds Hospital Radio. He was Secretary of the Association for a number of years and provided commentary on Carnegie as well as for Yorkshire and international cricket to the main Leeds Hospitals. He helped produce and present the weekly Sportscene programme every Friday evening from the studio in Leeds General Infirmary, covering his other major sporting interests, golf, Formula and MotoGP. He was a keen golfer, being a long-standing member of Otley Golf Club, having been both Captain and President. He rarely missed a day at The Open and frequenty enjoyed golfing holidays in Portugal. David will be sadly missed by all who knew and worked with him. From everyone at the club we would like to pass on our condolences to his family and friends. BATH WINGER DAVIES JOINS YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE ON LOAN Yorkshire Carnegie have signed Welsh winger Harry Davies on loan from Bath Rugby with immediate effect. Davies joined Bath Rugby ahead of the -7 season from Cardiff Blues and featured against Yorkshire in the pre-season game between the sides at Ilkley last season. The ft in player made a try-scoring debut for the Welsh region in November against Newcastle Falcons in the LV= Cup. Davies also scored nine tries in appearances for Welsh Premiership side Cardiff RFC. FANS MEETING AHEAD OF PIRATES GAME On Sunday st October Yorkshire Carnegie supporters are invited to a pre-match fans meeting in the Carnegie Café Bar from.pm to pm. Fans will hear from Chairman David Dockray, Executive President Sir Ian McGeechan and Non-Executive Director Jon Wright. The meeting will be hosted by John Bentley and will be an opportunity for supporters to meet the board and hear their vision for the club s future. There YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE S COMMUNITY PROGRAMME RECEIVES BOOST FROM NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH BERUGBY MAGAZINE Yorkshire Carnegie s community department are delighted to be forming a partnership with BeRugby magazine. The partnership will primarily support the Rugby Readers scheme but will also benefit the wider community programme. Affiliated clubs and schools will be able to subscribe to the magazine and those taking part in the Rugby Readers programme will receive copies for their school library. There will be competitions throughout the year and news from the Yorkshire Carnegie community team will appear in the magazine. Designed specifically for children, BeRugby aims to encourage them to read and learn with a sport that they love. will also be a Q&A opportunity at the end. This is a free event for everyone with match tickets and there is no need to register attendance beforehand. Lisa McCann, Yorkshire Carnegie Community Manager, commented: We are excited to be working with BeRugby Magazine. It is a fantastic concept and one which we are delighted to promote to our network. We are always looking to improve our programme and this will provide additional opportunities for our clubs and schools, particularly our reading programmes. Chris Fuller commented: Everyone at BeRugby kids magazine is really looking forward to working with Lisa and Yorkshire Carnegie. They are a fantastic club with a real passion for youth and grassroots rugby which echoes our own values. Their schools programme is excellent and shows how rugby can benefit children in all walks of life. 7 OPPOSITION PROFILE: DONCASTER KNIGHTS The Knights have made a bright start to the 7- campaign and arrive at Headingley Carnegie having won their opening two Greene King IPA ionship fixtures. Having successfully reached the end of season play-offs in each of the last two campaigns, Clive Griffiths charges will have the desire to compete at the very top of the division again this term. Today will be Doncaster s second Yorkshire derby of the fledging campaign, having dispatched Rotherham Titans - at Castle Park last weekend. In a six-try display, centre Andy Bulumakau top scored with a brace of tries with his brother, new signing Junior Bulumakau, also on the scoresheet. The Knights began the season with a trip to Jersey and, in a characteristically close battle between the two sides, prevailed -; aided in no small part by a perfect kicking display from stand-off Simon Humberstone. Player turnover was relatively low at Castle Park this summer with a total of ten new signings joining the side, many boasting plenty of ionship experience. Four of the new recruits, Ian Williams, Tom Hicks, Will Owen and Charlie Foley, made the switch from neighbours Rotherham Titans. Back row Jason Hill and scrumhalf Tom James signed from, with lock Morgan Eames also moving from Nottingham. Former Harlequins prop Owen Evans added a noticeable presence to the Knights front row along with hooker David Nelson, who made his time in Doncaster permanent having spent a spell on dual-registration from Newcastle Falcons last season. In addition to the new signings the Knights have been boosted by the development and progression of the club s Academy. Nine young prospects have taken part in pre-season training with the first-team, with five featuring in the club s pre-season schedule, including starts for flanker Sam Jones and centre Will Burden. The Knights played a total of four pre-season games with opposition ranging from the Premiership to London and South East Premier. Their first encounter involved a trip to Guernsey and in a useful exercise the Knights cantered to a - win over Guernsey Raiders. The second test of preseason was a little different, the first of two tests against Newcastle Falcons. A strong Falcons team pulled clear of the Knights in a clinical display to run out - victors. Doncaster avenged this defeat with a - win over Dean Richards side a fortnight later. Donny s one other pre-season run-out came against National Division One outfit Loughborough Students. The students proved a handful early on, but after taking the lead twice early doors the Knights showed their class to run in -unanswered points with braces from Tyson Lewis and Andy Bulumakau amongst seven second-half tries. «7»
