To the many that made financial contributions to help us restore our greens last year, thank you. 6 From the Pro Shop Steve Crane, Golf Professional CRANE S TIP If you are traveling south or west this winter, you will encounter different grass and conditions. Some examples: Bermuda grass has grain that affects the line of your putts much more than up here. There are two ways to help determine grain: look at the grass around the hole, if one side of the cup is brown or dead, that is the direction of the grain. The roots were cut off when setting the hole. Play more break in this direction or if you are putting into the grain, the putt will be slower, with the grain faster. Also, if you are putting with the grain, the grass will look shiny, into the grain it will appear a darker green. A couple of other things to consider: 1) when you are playing closer to sea level, the ball will not travel as far, you may have to use more club. 2) chipping off Bermuda grass can be more difficult. Your club may stick in the ground. Try using a club with more bounce such as your Gap or Sand wedge, and 3) the ball may sit down in long grass surrounding the greens. If so, use your sand wedge and play it more like a bunker shot. Open the club face, land the club slightly behind the ball, and follow through. RULES QUESTION A player generally is penalized one stroke when he, his partner, or their caddies cause the ball in play to move. The ball must be replaced. In some circumstances, the player is not penalized if he accidentally causes his ball to move: What are they? ANSWER: 1). In searching for a ball covered by sand, in the replacement of loose impediments moved in a hazard while finding or identifying a ball, in probing for a ball lying in a water hazard or in searching for a ball in an obstruction or an abnormal ground condition. 2) in repairing a hole plug or ball mark, 3) in measuring, 4) in lifting a ball under a rule, 5) in placing or replacing a ball under a rule, 6) in removing a loose impediment on the green, and 7) in removing movable obstructions. MOST IMPROVED The GHIN System ranks players based on a formula that assumes it is more difficult for a low handicap player to improve a large number of strokes than it is for a higher handicap player. The USGA recommends the following formula: Add 12 to the player s index at the start of the season (value A). Add 12 to the player s index at the end of the season (value B). Divide value A by value B. Calculate to three decimal points. This is the improvement factor. The player with the highest improvement factor is the most improved. For example, a player that begins the year with a 7 handicap and improves to a 6, (1.055) improves more than a player that begins with a 33 handicap and finishes with a 31 (1.046).
