3 From the President Individual recognition goes out to North East High School sophomore standout Alec Hite, for earning a medal at the PIAA state golf competition. As we usher out the 2016 golf season, let me take a moment to recognize some individual and team accomplishments of some of our members, staff, and patrons of Lake View. And finally, congratulations to Ryan Hathaway as an all-star selection to the junior team that advanced to the PGA National regional finals in Massachusetts. Congratulations to the Mercyhurst University men s golf team, coached by Ron Coleman, for their successful fall golf campaign. They won the Mercyhurst Invitational here at Lake View and the Gannon Invitational held at Whispering Woods with Chris Kupniewski winning the individual title. Junior PGA Little League All Stars, Ryan Hathaway, 2nd row, far right Lake View is proud to recognize these teams and individuals for their outstanding efforts this past year. With the holiday season upon us, let us all be sure to give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon us. Tis the season to enjoy family, friends, and merriment, so be sure to do so. The Mercyhurst Prep girl s team, coached by Kathy Lynch, managed a third place finish at the PIAA state championship tournament. The willow tree on the right side of hole #9 went down in the wind. 6 From the Pro Shop Steve Crane, Golf Professional RULES QUESTION A player s ball lies in the rough. He finds a ball, but because of the way the ball sits, he cannot identify it as his. He has an identification mark on both sides of the ball. Can he mark and lift the ball to identify it? ANSWER: The responsibility for playing the proper ball rest solely with the player. If the player believes a ball may be his but he cannot identify it, the player may lift the ball for identification, without penalty. Before lifting the ball, the player must announce his intention to his opponent, marker, or fellow competitor and mark the ball. He may then lift the ball, and identify it, provided that he gives his opponent, marker, or fellow competitor an opportunity to observe the lifting and replacement. The ball must not be cleaned beyong the extent for identification. If the ball is the player s ball and he fails to comply with all or any part of this procedure, or if he lifts the ball without good reason to do so, he incurs the penalty of one stroke. CRANE S TIP Over the winter months, you can practice your putting. Do you consistently miss your putts to the right or left? The problem could simply be your ball position at address. If you miss to the right, there is a good chance your putter is open. Consider playing the ball more forward, closer to your left foot. This will give you more time to square the putter at impact. If you consistently miss to the left, play the ball farther back in your stance. Find the spot that works best for you. MOST IMPROVED The USGA has a recommended method for determining a golf club s most improved player at the end of the season. The formula is based on the assumption that it is more difficult for a low handicap player to improve a large number of strokes than it is for a higher handicap player. The formula determines the player with the highest improvement factor is the most improved. Formula available in the pro shop.
