1 June 2017 CLUBHOUSE GOLF SHOP owatonnacc.com We would like to send a belated Happy Mother s Day wish to all of those who we were not able to offer our wishes to on Mother s Day. We the honor of hosting and celebrating Mother s Day with nearly 350 members and their families this year. The culinary and service staff all provide an outstanding experience to all in attendance. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your very special day! The stormy season is upon us and it is a great time to remind everyone about our light prediction system, Thor Guard. Thor Guard continuously measures the ions in the atmosphere. When conditions are elevated to the point where lightning is eminent, the system will sound an alarm in the form of one long air horn blast. All clear is signaled by three short blasts. In addition, there are 3 yellow strobe lights that will remain activated while under red alert. There are two stations on the golf course located on holes 3 and 12 which have both air horns and strobe lights and there is a strobe light in the pool area. While under red alert and Thor sounds the alarm you should make your way to the clubhouse as quick as possible or enter the cabana if at the pool. The pool and snack shop will be opening on Saturday May 27 th which also means that the speed bump will be going back up. Please drive slowly in the parking lot and be extra alert as many of our smallest members will be coming out to have a great time at the pool. The pool hours will be weekends 11-8 and until school is out, weekdays 3-8. After school is out for the summer the pool hours will be 11-8 everyday! The weather and air temperature will determine if the pool will be open, please check our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts for information when the weather is questionable. The invites for the Spring Fling ladies social just went out. The night will begin with a 5 pm social hour followed by dinner at 5:30. The evening s entertainment will be provided by Laurie Matejcek from Acrylics and Corks. Come try your hand painting, you will be amazed at how good your masterpiece turns out under Laurie s guidance. This event is available to all of the club s ladies so call some friends and plan on a great night. You may have seen some activity on Lemond Road at the end of the club s driveway. I spoke with the project manager from the city and he stated that the contractor has not provided them with the start date for the Lemond Road construction project. Once complete the road will have curbs, gutters, storm sewer and a sidewalk. The city is aware that access to the club during the entirety of the project is imperative for both members and events. The city has committed to supplying the necessary signage when rerouting is needed. We will keep you updated as well on the website, Facebook, Twitter and blasts when routes to the club changes during construction. And finally a couple of reminders, the same individual can be your guest on course or at the pool three times per year and there are no guest privileges in our workout facility. Food and beverage minimums end on the last day of each month for members A-M and on the 15 th for members N-Z. Please contact the front office if you have questions concerning your minimum. See you at the club.
2 By AJ Lindenbaum Head Golf Professional As summer begins to ramp up, I want to share a few tips with you that I use in my game, which will hopefully take a few strokes off your rounds. 1. Play your shot! What I mean by that is, if you can hit a repeatable shot play it as often as you can. If you always hit a fade or slice, do not aim right and expect it to hook without proper practice. Vice versa could be said for those who draw or hook the ball. I try to play a fade on almost every shot. It is my most repeatable shot and offers me the best chance to have success. 2. Lay up to a distance you re comfortable with. I think we all can get in trouble sometimes trying to rip a 3 wood or hybrid on our second shots on par 5 s that we cannot reach in two. Even if you do hit it straight, ending up with a difficult 40 yard shot is often times worse than being 100 yards away. I would imagine we all have a club that we know will go around 100 yards. 3. Club up and swing easy. We often play in windy conditions at the OCC and learning how to flight your ball is invaluable. Taking less club, and swinging hard is more often than not the lower percentage play. Higher lofted clubs have increased spin and will balloon into the wind, even if hit well. Next time you are out playing, try to take more club than usual and use a ¾ swing. The increased control and lower spin, with the extra club, will fight through the wind much more efficiently. 4. Speed is more important than line. The correct combination of both is how we make putts, but none of us will likely ever make every single putt we have in a round of golf. If you have, I encourage you to share that with all of us golfers looking to make more! With that being said, in my practice strokes I like to look at the hole and feel out the stroke I believe will provide the proper pace to my upcoming putt. Correct speed will help in eliminating aggravating 3 putts and increase your chances of holing putts that are headed towards the edge of the cup. ALSO, WE HAVE SEVERAL UPCOMING EVENTS WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU PARTICIPATE IN, THEY INCLUDE; Junior golf camp begins June 12 th through the 16 th. We have a great group of instructors this year and it looks like so far, we have a great turnout. Parents ask me all the time if their son or daughter should sign up if they have no golf experience and the answer is YES! We have players of all skill levels and we try and divide kids by skill level and age. One Day Member Guest: The One Day Member Guest is a great way to bring friends or family out to the club to play. The format is 2 best balls of 4 and starts at 1:00. You can either bring 1 or 3 guests and you are welcome to pair up with whomever you would like. The cost is $55 per person and includes golf, cart, dinner and prizes. Be sure to sign up in the golf shop. The event will begin at 1:00 on June 2nd. Father/ Child: The Father/Child tournament is a great way to bring you kids out to play on Father s day. We will block off times from 1 3pm on June 18th, however if you would like to play early that is OK too. The events will vary based on the children s age. Be sure to call the pro shop for a tee time. Ladies 9 Hole Guest Day: This is a great chance to bring a friend or three out to the club to play in a fun and casual event. The 9- hole guest day is designed to be a fun night with a dinner after golf. We will have events and prizes for the night. The Guest Day will be held on June 22nd at 5:30. Call the golf shop to sign up. Couples Golf: This is the second Couples Golf event of the year. These are fun and casual events. The event will be held on June 16th at 5:30. You can sign up as a two-some and we will pair you up or sign up as a full group of 4. We will also provide child care for those of you looking to play and need a safe place for your children. The child care is only $10 per child and includes dinner. 4 th of July Flag Day: (OCC Point Tournament) The OCC Flag tournament may be the most unique at the club. Here is how it works. Each player that tees off will receive a flag with their name on it. You will play until you hit 71 shots (par for the course) plus your handicap strokes and drop the flag, once you have reached your limit. The cost is $5 per player and you can make your own tee time. Call the golf shop to sign up. This event will be held on July 4 th! For more tips and advice, please talk with me in the shop or contact me via (AJL@owatonncc.com) to schedule a time. I would be happy to help you out with your game!

5 It is that time of year again where I begin asking for help when it comes to upkeep on the course. We are now in good grass growing weather so please take a little more time and try to keep the course in good shape. Whether it is replacing divots on fairways, sanding divots on tees or replacing rakes IN bunkers. On tees I would like to see divots filled flush with the sand/seed mix that is provided and then pressed down firmly with your foot. On fairways I recommend replacing any salvageable piece of turf that you can back into the divot. Any divot that you can replace turf to will greatly assist the healing process. The sand/seed mixture should only be used when filling gaps around a replaced divot or when your divot has exploded and there is no useable turf to salvage. Whether replacing turf or using the pre-mixed bottles, please remember to press down firmly with your foot. Remembering this step will give your turf a much better chance of survival - rather than the alternative of doing nothing and having a lesser quality hitting surfaces later in the season. Another thing that we are going to be working on this season a little more diligently is thistle control in the native areas. We have begun treating areas, but with the amount we have, it will be a constant fight throughout the season. This does mean that we must chemically treat these areas more often which will result in having to mow them down multiple times throughout the season. I don t think many of you will mind this, but please help us out as well and keep carts out of these areas. Just because these areas may not be as wild or tall as they have been in years past, that doesn t mean we want people driving through them. As I stated before, this will be an ongoing fight throughout the season and one that we will never completely win because of our rivers variability with flooding as well as all the agriculture around us. Please know that we are working on the thistle out there and we hope to limit the amount that impedes people s golf game. Thank you again for being patient with the ongoing fight and we will see you out on the course. By Robert Brown Executive Chef We ve got some amazing things going on in the OCC kitchens. On the 7th, 16th and 21st we have Off the Grill. Seafood night will be on the 9th followed by BBQ night on the 30th. Don t forget, every Thursday is $13 Thursday menu with some great options. The Snack Shop is now open with some great new menu selections, so be sure to come out to the pool and check them out. With all of the countless things that we have coming up, we look forward to seeing you in our dining facilities. Another month come and gone. We will be busy here at the Club with Graduation parties galore! We feel so privileged to be a part of so many young lives, along with their families. It is our pleasure to celebrate their By Julia Seykora graduation accomplishment with them all! Ladies, please mark your calendars for the Ladies Social on June 8th! As in the past, there will be food, spirits, and comradery! Tell you friends, and be sure to reserve your spot for the evening, entertainment will be provided! BINGO with Steve will take place in the Bar on June 15th. Be sure to make a reservation! We are fortunate to have weddings every weekend in June, so again, we thank you for sharing your Club with the lucky Couples and their guests! The restaurant can be such a fun place to bring your families! It seems like every week we get to experience or create a fun moment with our very special members! Pictured are two such moments! We recently had the OHS Jazz band perform for a member event in our ballroom, but not before we acquisitioned them to sing Happy Birthday to our very own Bud Freheit who turned 91! Happy Birthday young man! Dessert can be an experience, especially if you are these cuties! Wear it with pride! Looking forward to making more memories so come on out!
