1 PRIVATE CLUB MATTERS AUGUST 2013 NOTE FROM JIMMY TERRY, PGA GENERAL MANAGER It is with great enthusiasm that I write my initial communication to the membership at PGA Golf Club. My first 60 days here have been very exciting and I am thankful for the warm welcome so many of you have given me. Many new things are taking place at PGA Golf Club -- I hope that you have been keeping up with the golf course maintenance and staffing updates we have sent regularly via . Now, I want to take this opportunity to provide you with an update on some of the key enhancements we are looking to make as we move forward. Many of you have shared your thoughts and concerns with me regarding the progress of the Golf Club clubhouse expansion. I understand your comments and they are certainly fair. Although I have only been here a short while, it is clear there were mistakes made prior to my arrival regarding the clubhouse and timing. I believe it is important for you to know that The PGA of America is fully committed to the enhancement of, and addition to the current facility. We simply want to ensure we get the clubhouse expansion right. You can anticipate an announcement about our next steps in the near future. Additionally, when the leadership of The PGA spoke to the membership in March, they made it very clear that the organization is committed, not only to the expansion of the clubhouse, but to restoring PGA Golf Club and Country Club to a status commensurate with the PGA Brand. Since that meeting, we have prioritized and executed our plans in several ways. Of particular note, we have: Hired a new Golf Course Superintendent and improved golf course conditions Renovated the Country Club greens and practice area Hired a new General Manager Hired a new Club Manager/Director of Food and Beverage along with a new Director of Golf Operations for the Golf Club Received approval for a new fleet of turf equipment for all four courses Received approval for capital repairs and improvements for the Country Club and Golf Club CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 INSIDE THIS ISSUE NOTE FROM JIMMY TERRY, PGA AUGUST BIRTHDAYS STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH WANAMAKER TROPHY DISPLAY IN PGA GOLF CLUB GOLF SHOP COUNTRY CLUB GROW-IN ALOHA FRIDAY TWILIGHT TENNIS MONTHLY EVENTS AUGUST 2 TRIVIA NIGHT 6:30 PM PGA COUNTRY CLUB AUGUST 9 TRIVIA NIGHT 6:30 PM PGA COUNTRY CLUB AUGUST 16 SHRIMP NIGHT BY RESERVATION WANAMAKER ROOM AUGUST 23 PRIME RIB NIGHT BY RESERVATION PGA COUNTRY CLUB
2 PAGE 2 OF 6 NOTE FROM JIMMY TERRY, PGA CONTINUED Our leadership team is 100% committed to providing you a quality product and experience, and we genuinely appreciate your patience and support. I am confident it will be rewarded. We are also pleased to announce that PGA Golf Club is going green this year, which means that all member materials, including a Member Directory, Membership Handbook, Membership Plan, Rules and Regulations and Event Calendar (equipped with event registration) will be accessible for members online. Be watching for an coming soon with instructions on the new website! Should you require any help, please reach out to Ashley for assistance. Finally, as we look forward to a new season, stay on the lookout for our grand reopening party for the Country Club in October. It should be a great way to end summer and begin the fall season. Again, thanks for your help and support of PGA Golf Club. I will see you around the Club very soon. 4 PAGE 4 OF 6 GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH STAY CENTERED To hit long and straight golf shots over and over again, the fundamental of staying centered over the ball must be understood. At the beginning of your swing, I want you to start moving your upper body before your lower body. The swing starts with your left shoulder turning around your spine, and your shoulders need to swing in a circle. Maintaining a centered swing helps build and retain power by keeping you from swaying during your backswing and by keeping your swing in one place. This helps you return the clubface back to the same position it was in at address. At the beginning of your swing, move your upper body before your lower body The swing starts with your left shoulder turning around your spine Shoulders need to swing in a circle
5 PAGE 5 OF 6 COUNTRY CLUB MAINTENANCE UPDATE GROW-IN The greens renovation at the PGA Country Club is continuing on schedule, and we re well into grow-in, the final phase of the project. Just watching the grass grow, right? Well, there s actually a lot more going on than that. Crews take daily measurements, monitoring moisture and ph levels. Experienced eyes check for signs of harmful bacteria or fungus, and countermeasures are employed, if necessary. Mother Nature has been really helpful this summer providing a nice assist to our irrigation system, and while mostly beneficial, some of the heavier rains can cause minor erosion. Areas affected have been repaired, and now that the roots are really taking hold, the soil is more stabilized. These pictures show new growth on the practice putting green, which, just a few weeks ago, was bare dirt. This indicates a good grow-in rate, which is highly desirable during this kind of project. ALOHA FRIDAY TWILIGHT TENNIS Director of Tennis, John Koahou and our PGA Country Club Sports Members would like to invite members and guests for an evening of Hit & Giggle Tennis!
