4 FOOD & BEVERAGE Jim received his first experience in food and beverage at the age of 21 when he went to stay and work with his brother for a summer. His brother was the assistant to the Food and Beverage Director at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.. Jim was going to spend the summer doing whatever needed getting done for the food service in the gallery. His brother suggested he dress-up and wear a tie to work every day, as that would help determine where they placed him each day. It worked. He was fortunate enough to see the day-to-day workings of all six restaurants in the gallery as well as interact with all the personnel, from dishwashers to directors. Jim Edwards Food and Beverage Director When Jim returned to Tuscaloosa that fall (Roll Tide!), he was disinterested in school, and accepted his first full-time, permanent restaurant job as the manager of a small Chinese restaurant in town. He fell in love with the industry and now 30 years later is still passionate about people, service, and food (and craft beer). Along the way, he has worked for mom and pop restaurants, short-order establishments, Mexican restaurants, and eventually wound up at Logan s Roadhouse, where he spent approximately 10 years of his career (Florence, Huntsville, Decatur, San Antonio). In 2010 he was recruited by his friend who is the GM at the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa. He was happy to accept the position as Director of Restaurants for the hotel. He stayed with them until coming to Turtle Point. Jim also raised one daughter who now lives and works in San Francisco, CA. When He s not working you ll probably find him on one of the local bodies of water fishing from his kayak, or possibly walking around downtown taking pictures. Jim is genuinely excited to be part of the Turtle Point food and beverage team and looking forward to everything the future holds here. Kyle Ogden Executive Chef Hello everybody! As you start into a new year let s think about lifestyle habits to keep your brain healthy. Below are 8 tips to give your brain a boost from WELCOA.org: 1. Sleep Well. Studies suggest that sleep actually restores and repairs the brain and helps it function better. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Brief naps in the afternoon can help too. 2. Eat whole foods, plant-based diet. Research suggests that a whole foods, plant-based diet low in saturated fat and processed foods is best for your brain and overall health. 3. Exercise your body for brain health. Exercising on a regular basis can improve memory, learning ability, and prevent or delay mental decline that comes with aging. Research suggests that both aerobic exercise and resistance training performed regularly can help maintain your ability to think and remember as you age. 4. Combine healthy behaviors. Adopting one healthy habit is a good start to protect your brain. Combining multiple healthy behaviors like a healthy diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep does more for your brain than just one of these alone. 5. Stimulate the brain. Make time to play board games, do crossword puzzles, dance, read, and be social. Studies show that activities like these keep the brain stimulated, improve recall, and prevent age related memory loss. 6. Spend time in nature. Getting outdoors can benefit mood, health, and overall well-being. Studies show that too much time indoors can prevent you from enjoying the benefits of breathing fresh air and spending time in natural settings. Get outside for at least a few hours a week for a brisk walk, fresh air, and a quiet natural environment. 7. What to leave out. While there are many things you can do to keep your brain healthy, there are some things you should avoid. Don t smoke. Limit or avoid alcohol. Tobacco use and alcohol have both been linked to dementia and age-related memory loss. 8. See a doctor. Regular check-ups are important for mental and physical health. See a doctor to discuss preventive measures for brain health. Sources: Nature Review Neuroscience, National Sleep Foundation, Journal of Applied Physiology
6 CLUBHOUSE NEWS & EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Mark Grisham General Manager We just held our annual meeting and had each department go through their operation for the year with details of what went right and what didn t. This past year has been overall extremely positive in Club operations due in large to the great staff we have in each department. There seemed to be a concern that we were not paying down our debt in a timely manner so I wanted to share with all members our current financial status and show you how positive the club is operating. For those that were not able to attend the meeting I would like to give you a summary of the past year: Operating Summary Club Income 2018 Actual 2018 Budget Variance Member Dues 1,922,001 1,899,405 22,596 Capital Dues 324, ,900 51,045 Int. Fees Fines, Lockers 37,276 44,400-7,124 Total 2,284,222 2,217,705 66,517 Income was $66,517 better than budget, but we don t get to put that in the bank. Here is a list of Capital Expenditures we had as a Club for 2018: Golf Mats $4,648 Equipment Lift & Greens Roller $5,162 18th Hole Project $13,553 Funded with private donations Greens Fans Rebuild $14,259 Pump Repair #8 Pond $7,068 Clubhouse Roof $147,193 Funded with insurance claim Sunroom AC Unit $4,767 Washer & Dryer $1498 LED Lights for Parking Lot $9,855 Marina Pedestals $19,422 Total $227,428 Capital Obligations Loan Balances YTD This Month YTD Last Month 1 Month Change Term Loan - CB&S 943, , ,182 Operating LOC - CB&S 206, , ,027 Marina Loan - CB&S 170, , ,645 Cart Loan - CB&S 268, , ,485 Total Loan Balances 1,589, ,5593, ,285 Currrent September Year Change Term Loan - CB&S 943, ,122, ,734 Marina Loan - CB&S 170, , ,518 Total Loan Balances 1,113, ,322, ,253 Currrent September Year Change Term Loan - CB&S 943, ,749, ,248 Marina Loan - CB&S 170, , ,972 Total Loan Balances 1,113, ,062, ,219 As you can see, we have managed to pay down $949,219 on our loans over a 5 year period. This also takes into account we purchased golf carts last year instead of leasing them, and doing so added an additional $273,316 to our loan balance. This commitment by your Board of Directors to pay off debt has been steadfast and strong for the last few years and we are starting to see the results. Overall the Club is operating in a good place but we will have costly events in the upcoming year both expected and unexpected - that we need to be thinking and planning for. It can sometimes be a struggle to balance what we want, what we need, and what has to be done immediately, but being surrounded by such a great team of members and staff makes the challenge as enjoyable as possible. As always if there is anything I can do for you please don t hesitate to call.
7 FROM THE BRIDGE Harold Kimbrough Commodore We have had a great summer on the lake and look forward to next year even being greater. A lot of things are happening with the dock repairs and the possibility of enlarging the Quarter Deck. We will be having our Parade of Lights on December 15. We invite all boaters on the docks as well as those that are not, to be a part of the Parade. We have made a great deal of progress on some of the upgrades as well as repairs around the harbor area this year, but there are more items to deal with. If anyone knows of an issue that needs help, please let me, Rob or Mark aware of the need. To support the Clubs desire for a well organized and manicured environment, the recently revised Marina Bylaws requires the Club to perform increased, regular dock maintenance, and the boating members to keep their slip areas free of clutter. Regarding maintenance, Glen has just finished replacing almost all the damaged power pedestals, the rotting walkway boards, and the two dangerously rusting horizontal braces. A tour of the docks on Friday, Nov.9, found a few items needing additional maintenance, which will be done this winter. We will have some new members on the Bridge this year as we are trying to get a boater from each dock on the Bridge, so with that said any of you that are willing to serve let us know. As always any boater that would like to attend our Bridge meetings are always welcome. Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Bridge.
