I certainly appreciate the opportunity to serve the members of our Club in this capacity for the past two years. I have had an outstanding Board of Governors to work with during my tenure. Our Board and management have worked hard over the past couple of years to improve all facets of the Club s operations, all the while maintaining and hopefully improving the Club services for you as a member. We have been able to make some improvements in the financial operation of the Club during that period and, hopefully, you have seen member services improve as well. Bill Howard will be succeeding me in vember as President of the Board of Governors and will do an outstanding job in that capacity. Bill has served as a Board member, member of the Executive Committee, Vice-President of Finance and Executive Vice President of the Board over the past several years so he is very well experienced in the operation of the Club. I also believe that we have an outstanding management staff in place for Bill and the Board to continue to work with to make our Club a better and even more enjoyable experience for our membership. Bill will have four new Board members to be elected formally at our official meeting in vember. Those nominated to serve are Gary Hill, Bob Cox, James E. Mallette III and Lee Nichols. Stan Tomblin, Kenny Swindle, Mike Johnson, Marty Barnes and Jimmy Hughston will rotate off the Board in October. We all appreciate their willingness to serve the Club and their contributions to the governance of the Club during their tenure. Please express your thanks to them when you next see them. In closing I would like to encourage each of you to attend our annual membership meeting scheduled for Thursday night, vember 14, 2013 at 7:30 pm. This is an important meeting in that all committees give their annual reports and we review the Club s financials for the membership. I hope that you will take the time to attend this meeting. Again, it has been a pleasure and a great experience serving as your Club s President, and I look forward to enjoying our fine Club along with you for many years to come. See you at the Club!

2 TENNIS NEWS Mike Claiborne USPTA Tennis Professional MEN S LEAGUE IMPROVED The program I am most excited about is our Men s League-Thursday evenings. We have really worked hard to try and increase member participation and have succeeded. Mark and I are playing in each week, and we will have an overall men s league champion for the first time. We have a league scoreboard on hand and all games are recorded weekly. Additionally, three show points are awarded just for being there. The overall champion will be announced in early vember. MARK JOHNSON Mark has been our Assistant Professional for a little over six months. We appreciate all he has brought to the club during that time. He is already greatly valued here at Turtle Point and has attracted a strong lesson clientele. Originally from Plymouth, England, he became an official resident of Killen after he built his home nearby. Mark works on weekends and welcomes any calls. LADIES LEAGUE Thursday mornings look pretty good with a total of 26 ladies committed. For the first time, all ability levels are on the same morning. Additionally, the 2.5 group has finally developed enough that we have a group of 10 with a few rotating out on byes. Many are going down to lunch after play. Thursday mornings is a fun day of tennis. CARDIO TENNIS Our most consistent program over the past six months or so is Cardio Tennis. We offer this fast paced exercise class to music every Tuesday and Friday morning at nine o clock. We must be doing something right! Ladies who wear their cardio watch are burning around 600 calories in one hour. Awesome! Best of all, the games and drills are fun. Come join the action. LABOR DAY WINNERS TIPS ON TENNIS I think we have a terrific junior program with many up and coming juniors active in the sport. Many are playing tournaments on their own and have achieved a state ranking. Our number one goal as a team right now is to get our kids to come out on their own and simply spin the racquet and play a competitive match. Almost every junior I know only plays a match at a tournament. What about practice matches at home, on their own, between tournaments. 1ST PORTER MITCHELL, SUZANNA WYLIE AND MOLLY KALLIATH. 2ND KENDA RUSEVELYAN, SANDY RUDD, AND TONY KALLIATH. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED. WE HAD A FULL HOUSE. Mark s Tip of the Month: Since I have started working here, I have noticed a trend. Lots of the kids come out for lessons and groups, which is great and is making us have a great junior program, however, the kids do not come out and play matches among themselves. Everyone plays matches in USTA, Shoals Junior Circuit or school so in order to take your game to the next level, it s our goal as a team here at Turtle Point to play more matches. Take what you learn in a lesson or group and apply it in a practice match. 10 ADVANTAGES OF MATCH PLAY 1. Learn to assess your opponent s strengths and weaknesses.. 2. Be conscious of swings and changes in momentum during the match and change your game if necessary. 3. Determine what a big point is and how to play big on these points. 4. Play someone you consider weaker than yourself and take all that pressure and still win. 5. Learn from your losses. 6. Play more matches and be in tight situations. 7. Playing a lot of practice matches will help you identify what type of player you need to be in order to be successful (grinder, attacker, net rusher, etc). 8. Competitors like to compete. 9. Many players become overly nervous during tournaments. Practice matches will help you develop confidence. 10. You learn from experience, but you only get experience from playing and putting yourself in these match situations where you could feel the pressure; get nervous; and be more comfortable with it so you don t choke. 4 FOOD BEVERAGE James Crocitto Director of Food Beverage What a grand time everyone had at the Labor Day celebration. The band Rebel Yell was very well received, and we hope to have them back in the near future. Over 15 juniors participated in the Fishing Tournament with 3 lucky winners coveting the prized Nerf Blasters. The Biggest Fish, at 13.5 inches, went to Gavin King; the Smallest Fish at 4.25 inches went to Lauren Hamner, and the Ugliest Fish (with just one eye) went to Carolyn Johnson. Congratulations to all the winners and of course all the participants. I would also like to send out a special thanks to our staff member Clark Burns who made the fishing tournament a huge success. His kindness, patience and sense of humor made this event memorable. Thanks for your help Clark, and our prayers are with you. Looking forward, the Club will be celebrating OktoBEERfest throughout the month of October with imported beers at just $3.00+ all month long. We have brought in numerous specialty beers from around the world for your discerning palates to enjoy. We have also added beer tasting to the Meet the Artist Wine Taste event on Thursday, October 17th. While we are on a roll (wait for it) how about $2+ beers during the Speed Limit on October 24th as well. That brings us to vember and on Friday vember 8th Cajun Night is back. This popular event will feature all of your favorites from the Big Easy. And, of course what would vember be without the Thanksgiving on Thursday vember 28th. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. Many years back my mother was in the middle of some pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving afternoon when she was rushed to the hospital to welcome a bouncing baby boy to the family (me), so every 7 years my birthday falls on Thanksgiving Day. Can you guess how old I will be? Once again, we will be accepting reservations for Thanksgiving Day on the half hour from 10:30AM until 2:00PM. Reservations are limited to 50 guests per half hour, so call early for your preferred time. Best Regards, James Crocitto CCM CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PARTY BRIDGE WINNERS THIS MONTH 9/12/13! 6 HOUSE NEWS EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager Fall is a great time for golf, and I warmly welcome this cooler season. I have enjoyed seeing all of the activity around the club this summer! We have had successful golf tournaments, beautiful weddings, and fun family nights. The fun isn t ending though! We have many events already planned for this fall season. For the entire month of October, we will be celebrating OktoBEERfest with $3.00 Import Beer! Our Oktoberfest will be on October 11th. Also, October 17th October 20th we will be having some fantastic events: Art and Wine Weekend, Beer and Wine Taste, and Trunk Show. We are lucky to have such talented artists here in the Shoals! October 24th will be our monthly Speed Limit. You don t want to miss any of these amazing events that we have planned! When it comes to your social events, remember your club. We can take your stress away with planning the event and providing excellent service to you and your guests. We will also be having the Annual Membership meeting on Thursday, vember 14th at 7:30pm in the Room. Be sure to make your reservations now to join us for our traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner. I would like to extend a special thank you to our outgoing Board Members: Mike Johnson, Dr. Marty Barnes, Stan Tomblin, Dr. Kenny Swindle, and Jimmy Hughston. Also, a special thank you needs to go to Charles Crow for his term as President. We appreciate your years of service and dedication to TPYCC. Hope to see you at your club soon and often. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Fall is finally here and the weather has been really nice so far. The turfgrass growth has finally slowed down, and the tree leaves have started to fall. The grounds staff moves from mowers to blowers in their efforts to keep the course looking as nice as possible. Over the last month, we have overseeded all of the fescue areas on the golf course. We do this every year to improve our existing stand of turf. The practice tee has been overseeded with ryegrass, by doing this we should have nice green grass to hit off of all season long. Overall it s a great time to be on the golf course and when the leaves start to change colors, I expect the views to be spectacular. Glen Junkin, GCS Golf Course Superintendent The Green Committee requested that I talk about course set-up in the Voice this month. The hole locations are changed and tees are moved on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and s unless a storm or something has occurred that doesn t allow the crew to maintain their normal schedule. On the days that the hole locations are changed, we rotate between the 1, 2,and 3 pin positions. The hole locations will be in those positions on each green unless there is problem on a green that is preventing the pin to be in that location. If there is a problem with a certain area of a green, we will adjust the pin locations accordingly to protect the green. If you ever have any questions about course set up, please feel free to contact me at the club or by at glenj@tpycc.org. AS ALWAYS WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING GOLF AT THE I NEED YOUR HELP TO: 1. Fix your ball mark and one other. 2. Use the 90 degree rule and obey the cart signs 3. Fill your divots with the sand provided.

7 FROM THE BRIDGE Allan Neill Commodore Things were really busy in the month of August with the Turtle Point Boaters! We had three members make their way to Key West, FL with their boats in August. It is a fabulous trip. You can leave Turtle Point Marina and make your way to Key West and many other destinations. Key West has lots of history being the largest city in Florida in the late 1800's. Being a large port city at the time and one of multiple homes of Ernest Hemingway makes Key West a great stop. Knoxville for a UT ball game, Nashville for a Titans game or Tuscaloosa for a Bama game can all be destinations by water. Just take the time and enjoy. Looks like another great football season this year! Labor Day for our boats is all about tradition and the tradition lives on. Every Labor Day, Guntersville Yacht Club puts on a blowout party. They had a Tuxedos, Touchdowns and Tailgates party this year. Their club is just 100 miles by boat from our club. Six yachts and 28 Turtle Point members made their way to Guntersville for a great time of fun and fellowship. Guntersville has a member that has his own band and they put on a show to remember. Most of them joined us by boat for our M.A.S.H. party in July. We have enjoyed their fellowship and hospitality! I've enjoyed seeing the TP boaters continue the tradition of our relationships with Guntersville, Chattanooga, and Ft. Louden Yacht Clubs. Guntersville is where we all come together and it is always a good trip. It is always a trip to look forward to and then to remember fondly. It's been a fast year being Commodore, and time to let our next Commodore take over. Thank you for giving me this great opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing you on the water and around the club.
