2 TENNIS NEWS Mike Claiborne USPTA Tennis Professional FALL LADIES LEAGUE Our 10 week Thursday morning ladies league will start September 10th at 9 a.m. Everyone can sign up that would like to play on a regular basis. I will text weekly seeking a commitment for that week. How easy does it get! The cost is $30 for the full 10 week period. PARENT/CHILD MIXER This should be a fun and unique event. We have many juniors and their parents that both play tennis. A flighted Round Robin format will be used. Scheduled for afternoon, August 9th from 3-5 p.m. We are hoping everyone will go down to the pool afterwards for fun. $10 per team. SHOALS JUNIOR CIRCUIT FINALE The master s event for the top 4 in each age division will be held here at Turtle Point on August 15th. The circuit is a huge success. Many juniors from North Alabama compete on Saturday s throughout the area. Approximately 200 kids will have played in at least one event. TIPS ON TENNIS... THE SERVE The serve is the single most important stroke in tennis. It is also the only shot in tennis that you control completely; you put the ball in motion and only when you are ready. Jimmy Connors was one of the very best during his time. He consistently won the majority of points when it was his serve. Connors got a high percentage of first serves in and deep. His serve was not overpowering. His strategy was to place his opponent on the defensive and control most of the points. The average club player should emulate this style rather than going for the big booming serve. Constantly hitting your second serve, and especially under pressure (5-4) is difficult against a worthy opponent. I always use this example during lessons; a 1 is as soft as you can hit and a 10 is as hard as you can hit. You must find the number that will allow you to get 60 70% of your first serves in (most likely a 7 or an 8). The serve mechanics should be simple with focus on timing and rhythm. Keep your arm and wrist nice and relaxed at all times. The toss should be fairly low, slightly to the right and in front. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and your shoulders slightly sideways to the net. As you make contact with the ball your right leg should move forward into the court. Try to extend your arm as you reach for the ball, let your wrist snap and follow through down and to the left side of your body. Some spin is desirable. FUTURE TENNIS STARS JUNIOR CIRCUIT JULY 11TH, 2015 TURTLE POINT LABOR DAY MIXER Scheduled from 9 11:30 a.m. on the 7th. Men and Women of all levels are encouraged to sign up. Play with lots of different partners and opponents. FALL JUNIOR PROGRAM The fall 8-week program is one of our best, and is scheduled to start the week of August 31st September 4th. Flyers with all the details will be mailed in early August. Ruby Cunningham (2nd in Girls 12 s) & Martha Mitchener was 1st! Miss Peggy has recently decided to semi-retire, in order to spend more time with her husband Earnest, her 3 children and 5 grandchildren. 6 HOUSE NEWS & EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager Many of you have noticed the work that has begun on the 11th hole on the golf course. This major project has been initiated to enhance the stream located adjacent to the eleventh hole. PROBLEM: The stream located on the right side of #11 fairway has become unsightly due to erosion that has been occurring for a number of years. The bank of the stream towards the fairway is experiencing the most problems due to the large amount of surface runoff crossing #11 fairway during heavy rain events. Unless the frequency and amount of drainage crossing #11 s fairway can be reduced, this erosion problem will continue and likely damage any new features constructed along the stream as part of the proposed enhancement project. Engineers of the South (Robert Pride s firm) have proposed a small detention area to the left of # 11 green with effluent flow control and a piped discharge to address this situation. SOLUTION: Drainage from over 16 acres currently flows down the left side of #11 green and over #11 fairway. This drainage area includes the 12th hole, left of the 15th and some runoff from the right side of the 8th. Engineers of the South has laid out a storm water detention area on the left side of #11 green to slow these flows down and pipe them beneath #11 fairway. The detention area will be grassed with fescue just as it is now and will be free of water most of the time. During rain events, flows will accumulate in the detention area and drain at a slower rate through the effluent structures and underground piping. The pipe will discharge back into the stream on the lower end of #11 where the stream straightens out and heads towards #17. The system is designed to handle theoretical flows resulting from a once in 20 to 25 year storm event. Turtle Point member Scott Cross company Eagle Golf and Athletics began construction on the detention pond on July 13. Once the detention pond and drainage is installed, Eagle Golf and Athletics will begin the stream stabilization and enhancement phase of the project along the 11th fairway. The edges of the banks in the stream will be smoothed and softened. The banks will be formed to a more consistent width and depth. The turns will be left pretty much as is in order to make it look as natural as possible. Three or four weirs (dams) will be constructed along the stream. The waterfalls will be 1.5 to 2 deep each. Native stone will be used to veneer the dams, and the water will fall over and around native boulders. At key points along the stream, boulders will be planted in the walls of the stream to create rock outcroppings. The main focus in construction will be to control erosion, add waterfalls at irregular intervals and enhance the water feature while keeping it looking as natural as possible. In order to have water running through the stream and over the waterfalls, we will pump water from the river to #8 lake during the times that golfers are normally on the course. This extensive project is being funded by a group of members led by Terry Wylie and Cliff Darby. This major improvement to the course is being done in memory of Cliff s dad, long time TP member and supporter Mr. RG Darby who passed away last year. This commemorative tribute to Mr. RG Darby is another example of the pride and dedication that Turtle Point members have for their golf course, their club, and its legacy. If anyone would like to donate to the project fund, please let me know. We need a little assistance from our members. We are in a constant mode of improving food service paying special attention to expedient service. Members making reservations for dining (especially evening dining) helps tremendously. We look at reservations in order to staff appropriately. Our kitchen can only prepare so much food in an allotted time. When we receive reservations, we attempt to ensure that the kitchen and wait staff can keep up by timing our tables as best we can. For those of you who make reservations, thank you so much, and please continue to do so! For those who make a last minute decision to dine with us, please give us a call on your way to the club. Even these few minutes of time can help us tremendously! Our goal is to make your evening relaxing and enjoyable while dining on the fine cuisine so masterfully prepared by Chef Mark and his culinary staff. Thank you for all your cooperation as we continue to strive to make your club the best it can be! I hope to see you at your Club soon & often!
7 FROM THE BRIDGE BRIDGE OFFICERS ERNIE RIVARD Commodore PHIL LYONS Past Commodore GARRY BARNES Vice Commodore LANCE BRETHERICK Rear Commodore DR. GREG BEER Fleet Surgeon JOHN MOODY Yeoman BRAD LARD Harbor Master HAROLD KIMBROUGH Fleet Captain TIM ROBERSON Port Captain Glen Junkin, GCS Golf Course Superintendent Patrick Brown Ernest Rivard Commodore Greetings from the Yacht Club: The 4th of July Club festivities were great as always and enjoyed by all. Although Mother Nature re-arranged some time schedules, the fireworks around the lake were some of the best especially when watched by boat and definitely worth the delayed schedules. The Quarterdeck continues to be enjoyed by many and attendance at the monthly events continues to break last year's attendance (and we thank you all for that!). A special thanks to James and his staff for the outstanding food and services that we all look forward to every month. Improvements to the serving line are planned and will be implemented soon to make this great facility even better for everyone's enjoyment. June and July are great months to enjoy the lake and the Club. The Marina is certainly full on the weekend in spite of the hot weather. When I wrote back in April that I was looking forward to the first good hot day on the lake I certainly was not thinking this hot! One of those "Winter Precipitation Warnings" we got used to would certainly be welcome! Boaters' Weekend was lots of fun this year and the "Down Home BBQ" boaters theme was a hit for all. Special thanks to Bill and James for all the events/food/entertainment that makes this such a great event. Speaking of boating events, I hope everyone is planning to attend the annual cruise to Lake Guntersville Yacht club over the Labor Day weekend. This is a fun trip and the events/parties are outstanding! Please let myself or Bill know if you plan to attend, even if you plan to drive. We plan to make it a two day cruise with a stop in Decatur like last year. Of course if you have a "go fast" boat we will catch up! See you at the next Quarterdeck event and on our beautiful lake! SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT August is here again and when I think of August I think about the start of football season and that cooler weather is just around the corner. This summer has been your typical hot Alabama summer but the greens have continued to do well despite the heat. When we dryjected the greens on July 13, 2015, I really think it was a huge benefit to the health of the putting surfaces and it should be the last Aerification of the year. We have the project on #11 well underway and you can read more about this project in Bill s article on the previous page. In September we will be doing our annual over seeding on the driving range and fescue areas. This year we plan to expand our fescue areas in several places that are too shady to grow Bermuda grass. There are many places on the golf course that we sod every year. Most of these places are near trees and other fescue areas, so we will just extend the existing fescue to cover these areas and it should solve some of our problems that we experience each spring. We have hired a new assistant superintendent, his name is Patrick Brown. Patrick has been in and out of the golf business for a number of years. He is an Auburn graduate with a degree in Turf grass management and we are glad to have him on staff. If you see Patrick around the Club, please introduce yourself to him he would be glad to meet you.
