Make plans to come out and enjoy these great parties with your family and friends. We are happy to welcome several new members to our Club and would love to introduce even more to all that Turtle Point has to offer. 4 FOOD & BEVERAGE James Crocitto Director of Food & Beverage I would like to take this opportunity to tell everyone about an event on the horizon that will surely place Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in the community limelight. The event I am speaking of is Gourmets on the Greens sponsored by Shoal s Scholar Dollars. Monday s, September 29th, golfing and tennis event will include the area s best restaurants positioned on each hole serving their respective signature dishes. The players will judge the offerings and proclaim a winner who will be awarded a trophy which they will proudly display in their place of business. This event is very limited (just 80 golfers and 30 tennis players). Sign up is easy by going to the Shoals Scholar Dollars website, shoalsscholardollars.com. This event will surely become a grand tradition, and your participation will certainly help the deserving young students we have here in the Shoals. The 3rd Annual Wine Extravaganza is scheduled for Thursday, August 14th, at 6pm. We have confirmed that Ann-Taylor from International Wines and Kara from Rush Wines will be on hand with over 40 different wines for you to experience along with Chef Mark s indulgent appetizer spread. This is your opportunity to stock up your cellar or tackle some of that Christmas shopping early. You will be able to order wines that night only at the ridiculous price of just 10% over cost. With just 80 spots available, this event will sell out fast. Reservations are required, and the 48 hour cancellation policy is in effect. 5 TURTLE POINT S SUMMER FUN! LOTS OF SUMMER FUN IS HAPPENING AT THE TPYCC POOL! Vicki Rikard s Birthday! Peter Justinious Birthday! Chip Rasch s Birthday! Slip-N-Slide Fun!!! Parents and children loved the Family Fun Day on Saturday of Independence Day Weekend. We had a greased watermelon relay, polo, and lots of water balloon games. Congrats to all the winning teams from Family Fun Day!
6 HOUSE NEWS & EVENTS FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager What a great summer we have had at Turtle Point! It has been a pleasure seeing so many members enjoying the Club and all the events and amenities here at TPYCC. From the monthly themed events at the newly renovated Quarterdeck to the sailing camps and kids camp and the always popular golf and tennis clinics, TPYCC has been full of summer fun. More fun events are planned for you and your family. TPYCC Team Trivia and Family Buffet on Friday, August 22nd, will be a fun night for all, challenging your wit and memory while satisfying your palate. Trivia questions will feature Turtle Point facts and history. Start organizing your team now! Join us Saturday, August 23rd, 6-9pm for Hot August Nights on the Quarterdeck with music by the Shakedown Kings. We will be serving TP s world famous Fried Chicken! The cost is $18.00 including tax. Our annual Labor Day Picnic will be held, August 31st. Join us for our traditional BBQ picnic. Also, the pool officially closes on Labor Day. Swim at your own risk will last until late September weather permitting. The safety of our children is obviously a top priority at Turtle Point. The deep water and hazards at the docks can make for a dangerous situation for unsupervised children. All children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times at the Marina and Quarterdeck. We thank you for your cooperation. Your membership is growing! We appreciate all that have invited their friends and associates to join the Club. Please continue to refer your friends to us. It is exciting to see new faces around the Club. Thank you all for your support. I hope to see you soon and often. Have a great Summer! As a c ourte to all, sy pleas remem e to put ber y cell ph our on on sil es ent when in dinin g area s. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT It s hard to believe that summer is almost over and fall is on its way. The golf course is doing great and completely healed from the harsh winter that we had, and we will be starting to work on replacing broken cart paths as soon as we are able. Along with cart path work we also plan on replacing the rest area at #12. The new design will be a much more user friendly design that will provide shelter from storms as well as one stop shop for refreshments. Glen Junkin, GCS Golf Course Superintendent On other items of interest, September is the month that we overseed the driving range tee and our fescue areas. This year the driving range really suffered from the overseeding and the harsh winter. This is something that is to be expected from time to time when you overseed. Overseeding can really have a harsh effect on the bermudagrass transition if it is coupled with a harsh winter like the one that we had this year. This year the ryegrass died around the first week of June because we had about 10 days of rain in a row, and the tee stayed saturated. The ryegrass died much earlier than we would have liked. However, when we decided to start overseeding the driving range we knew these things could happen, but we felt that it was worth the risk to have a surface to hit off of during the winter in addition to the mats. When we made this decision we expanded the tee by 35%, filling in all of the swales in front of the tee and the one that was on the right side allowing us to have more teeing space. By doing this the tee doesn t drain as well as it did before if we have large amounts of rain. We are looking at the cartpath issue on #6. Last year we let carts out on #6, and this spring we had a lot of winter kill on that hole so we went back to cartpath only until the grass had completely healed. Now everything is healed in nicely, and we will once again allow 90 degree on #6.
7 FROM THE BRIDGE Phil Lyons Commodore Greetings from the Yacht Club: June and July have been great weather this year to enjoy the lake. The 4th of July festivities at the Club were superb. The fireworks all around the lake were the best show in years. We watched the fireworks from our boat along with several other boaters. It was a perfect evening. Let s all start making plans for our annual Labor Day trip to Guntersville Yacht Club. The dates are August Also remember there are rooms available for those who choose to drive their cars. We are so glad the Quarterdeck is being enjoyed by so many. Mark your calendars for the next Quarterdeck party on August 23rd. We want to extend our sympathies to the families of two of our boating members, Greg Lewis and Bobby Brown who passed away in July. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Boaters Weekend was lots of fun this year. We want to give a special Thank you to James and his staff for making this a special weekend for everyone.
