1 News from THE TURTLE POINT YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB AUGUST 2012 Wine Extravaganza 2012 Thursday, August 9th 6 pm - 8 pm SPECIAL EVENTS PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS EARLY, Space is Limited! Your chance to taste over 40 different wines, talk with vendors in person and order wine that night only for 10% over cost! Details on page 4! Farewell TO SUMMER Teen Luau AUGUST 10TH 7:00-9:30 PM 6TH TO 9TH GRADERS ONLY! $16 PER PERSON, MEMBERS MAY INVITE FRIENDS! Non-Members will pay cash at the gate. MUSIC, FOOD & FUN! Lifeguards will be on duty for those that would like to swim! FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager Summer is winding down, but many activities are planned for the month of August at Turtle Point. On August 9, we are having our first Wine Extravaganza. This wine tasting will feature as many as forty different wines and tasty hors-d oeuvres prepared by Chef Mark. On Friday evening, August 10, we will have our Farewell to Summer Luau for middle school children. The party will be for 6th graders through 9th graders at the pool from 7:00 9:30 PM. Music and fun will be provided; lifeguards will be on hand until 9:30 for those who would like to swim. Our tennis players are sure to enjoy the Men s and Ladies Leagues and our Fall Junior Program. Save the date for the Labor Day Mixer on Monday, September 3rd. Tennis Professional Mike Claiborne and his staff love to work with players of all ages and skill levels; I hope that you can participate in our well-run programs. For our golfers of any skill level, on Saturday, August 11, we will have our Celebrate Turtle Point two-person Shamble. Ask your favorite member to play with you in this fun, one-day, friendly competition. Details for all of these events are in the Voice. We have a wonderful championship golf course at Turtle Point. This is due to a well-thought out design and construction, a piece of land that is unsurpassed for its terrain and drainage, and a hardworking, knowledgeable staff led by our Golf Course Superintendent Glen Junkin. We have a membership that is dedicated to the club. The challenges that the golf course has are shade, cart traffic and bentgrass putting surfaces. Due to shade issues on holes 4 and 6, carts are limited to the cart paths. Carts are also restricted to the paths on our par-three holes as well. We are very fortunate that the fairways drain well compared to courses across the South. During our prime golf season, rarely are carts limited to the cart paths on the whole course. It is important that carts remain on the paths on 4, 6 and the par threes. Your cooperation is appreciated. Please repair those ballmarks too! Please take advantage of our childcare every Friday night. Kids Zone is held from 5 9 pm at the club. This is the convenient way for couples and grandparents to dine at the club while we watch your children. It is a great outlet for the young people to have fun and meet others. Our sitter is Kelsey Smith. She is a graduate of Central High School and is a sophomore at Shoals Community College. Kelsey has been working Kids Zone since November 2011, she is a very responsible young lady and the children love her. I would like for everyone to take advantage of this program. As always, reservations for Kids Zone and dining are greatly appreciated! Thank you for supporting your club. I hope to see you soon and often.

2 TENNIS NEWS LADIES LEAGUE The first Thursday of play will be September 6th. Call to sign up. JUNIOR PROGRAM Junior Program: The 8-week fall program will begin in early September. Detailed flyers will be mailed by mid August. Mike Claiborne USPTA Tennis Professional LABOR DAY MIXER This is our last big holiday mixer of the year. Adults of all levels will be in the morning from 9-11:30 and juniors will be from 1-3 that afternoon. Call or stop by to sign up. MEN S LEAGUE This area of the club has become my biggest challenge. I find it truly incredible and amazing that at one time I had 50 men in an organized league here at Turtle Point. Texting people and just letting them come whenever simply is not working. When I had 50 it was on a Tuesday night and it was flighted. The courts were full and you knew the tennis would be at your ability level. We will be getting back to this for the fall. The first Tuesday of play will be September 11th. My goal is 10 men per flight with two rotating out as substitutes. Show points will be used in the following manner and added to your total games won that night. +3 for being there and playing; 0 when you cannot play and find your own sub and -3 when you cannot play and want us to find you a sub. Upon completion of the league, there will be a winner and runner-up in each flight. This format will make men committed to league night and competitive as well. Zack and I will be aggressively calling everyone in mid to late August to get you signed up. TOPS L TRIP I will now start collecting deposits for our trip scheduled for October Early indications are very positive at this time. The deadline for signing up is September 15th. Bill Gates Life Lessons: I look through my files this time of year for anything related to juniors. Here is one of my favorites dated October 2003 regarding a speech the late Bill Gates gave to a high school about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. In my opinion, if you have children this is mandatory reading. Rule 1: Life is not fair-get used to it. Rule 2: The world won t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will not make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won t be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping- they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it s not your parents fault, so don t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So, before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn t bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is not real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are, you ll end up working for one. 7 MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT Glen Junkin, GCS Golf Course Superintendent The golf course has held up very well so far this summer. However, August is always a difficult month for the greens. This is the time of year that we really have to keep a close watch on the greens to make sure they stay cool and the turf is disease free. My staff and I are continually checking greens to see if something is starting to appear on the greens that needs attention. If we feel that things are starting to change and the turf is not responding to syringing the way that it should, we may vent the greens (punch holes), and spray a fungicide on the spur of a moment. This procedure helps to keep oxygen to the root system and the fungicide is sprayed to make sure any disease activity is suppressed. We are here to produce the best conditions we can, however Mother Nature sometimes makes it a challenge. On or around mid-august, we will apply a pre-emergent herbicide for the control of winter weeds. I know it sounds early but, our winter weeds typically begin to germinate in late August. The product we use will last about 150 days which runs through December. By late December it is usually too cold for weed seed to germinate. I would like to thank everyone that has helped keep the golf course in great condition following the cart rules. Please be considerate of the golf course and follow the rules on Holes 4 and 6, and make sure the carts are on path around every tee and green. When everyone does this, it helps to keep the wear and tear on the golf course to a minimum. The ball marks are still an issue on some of the holes that you use a short iron on the approach shot. Please remember to fix your ball marks. Thank you again for your support on these issues; with your help we can continue to have a great well maintained club. PARTY BRIDGE!
