Rod Cabato Director of Tennis Cesar Hinojosa Catering Director Presidents Message Board of Governors News Thanks to the MGA, WGA and SMGA and special thanks to Scott Huegele for setting yard markers on all Nine Courses. There is a 50 yard marker on each hole and we ask that carts do not go beyond that marker. Please check the club s calendar for events during the month, reservations are strongly recommended. We continue to see improvements at the club. Food and beverage service has vastly improved and the chef is doing a great job. We try to provide as much information as possible. If you are not receiving s or you are getting to many, please let us know. The Board of Governors serves in an advisory capacity to the Management of the Pecan Grove Plantation CC. Please seek out one of our board members if you have questions or would like to get more involved! 3 Managers Corner I once read that there are 12 seasons in Texas: Winter, Fool s Spring, Actual Spring, Spring of Deception, Second Winter, Actual Spring, Summer, Still Summer, False Fall, Summer the Sequel, Actual Fall and Summer part 3. Right now, I believe we are just leaving Second Winter. The grass just doesn t know what to do. We have greened up nicely since we fertilized the golf course a few weeks ago, but we have not started actively growing due to the fluctuations in temperature. Here are answers to some of the questions I hear are floating around. What is the deal with the Poa Annua on the greens? Poa Annua is a winter weed here in Texas. The problem we have, like many other golf courses, is that over the years it has built up a tolerance to the few preemergent herbicides labeled for greens and the post emergent ones as well. The one thing we can look forward to is that it will die out once we warm up. When will the ropes come off of Plantation #2? We will take them down once we start actively growing, that way the grass will recover faster and can tolerate the wear and tear of all the cart traffic. Last week we sprayed the greens for the nematodes. We will be slicing the fairways here in the month of May. Greens aeration starts the Tuesday after Memorial Day and consecutive Mondays after that. See you on the course! Daniel Wenzl Golf Course Superintendent

4 SMGA NEWS Pecan Grove Seniors Crush Field To Win Weston Lakes Interclub Tournament Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club seniors won the interclub tournament with a rout of the other seven competing golf clubs at the April 19 West Side Interclub Golf Association event. The Pecan Grove Senior Men s Golf Association team bested its Stableford quota by 15 points. The Weston Lakes CC team came in second beating its quota by 8.5 points. Third place Falcon Point CC beat its quota by 4 points. The victory puts Pecan Grove in a tie for second place with Falcon Point in WSIGA standings after the first two interclub events of the year. Quail Valley is in first place. The SMGA team consisted of Steve Gant, Wyman Hopkins, Greg Mantei, Ike Massey, Don McIntyre, Bob Nunnery, Jim Purtell, and Jim Yaccino. Top five scorers were McIntyre (38.5 points), Yaccino (38.5), Gant (36.5), Nunnery (36.5), Purtell (36.5). The next West Side Interclub event is scheduled for May 17 at Sweetwater Country Club. James Aaron Scores An Ace SMGA vice president James Aaron aced the Grove 3 hole at Pecan Grove Plantation CC on March 13, This was the regular Tuesday SMGA tournament and Aaron s threesome started on Grove 3. Aaron was first to hit from the tee and his first golf swing of the day ended up in the front hole location. This was Aaron s third hole-in-one. Head PGPCC golf pro David Esch lead a champagne toast to Aaron after the golf round. Bob Nunnery Makes First Hole-In-One SMGA golfer Bob Nunnery got his first ever hole-in-one on April 27, 2018 at Pecan Grove Plantation CC. Because of glare from the early morning sun on the Grove 3 green, no one in the foursome could see where Nunnery s tee shot ended up. After getting to the green and not seeing his ball on it, players began scanning the rough past the green. Then one of the golfers walked over to the hole and shouted at Nunnery, Here it is, while pointing at the pin. Nunnery s first hole-in-one came 26 years after he started playing golf. Lucky Charm? Senior golfers yearning for a hole-in-one may be lining up to play with Ike Massey. Massey was a witness to James Aaron s hole-in-one in March and was a witness to Bob Nunnery s ace in April.

5 MGA NEWS What a test!! The course set up, the competition and ultimately the weather all played a part in another successful conclusion to the "Tournament Unlike Any Other" the PGPCC Masters!! The participants fought through light mist, heavy winds, falling temperatures and pimento cheese to post the best scores they could under the conditions. The Masters Horseman version!! And they're off!! The Horse Race at the conclusion of The Masters was eventful as always with 8 Flight winners, or their designated next in line, vying for the coveted crown of Masters Horseman. Let's be honest - we could only muster up the 8 folks who went back out in that weather. Play began on Grove 1 with Cruickshank, Huber, Lowery, Hooper, Kappes, Gregory, Benton and Mullennix participating and Mike Wood capturing the action as MGA Staff Photographer. The gallery watched closely as Cruickshank, Lowery, Mullennix were eliminated after a chip-off. Grove 9 saw some struggles off the tee, but valiant efforts to catch Huber, who somehow got his tee ball through the trees and made birdie 3 on the hole, didn't fare well as Benton and Hooper were eliminated with play moving to Plantation 1. The weather played havoc with tee shots once again and with an opportunity to move to the final hole, a chip off for Gregory, Huber and Kappes was required as Gregory just missed his bogey putt on the green with it's treacherous pin location. Some interesting attempts to see who could chip worse ensued. Gregory went all T-Boone on us and sent the final two to the final hole. Huber and Kappes teed off and found the fairway on Plantation 9. Kappes smartly scuttled a second shot to the intermediate cut, err, earth mounds about 100 yards from the green. After fielding questions about things that shouldn't mentioned here, and faced with a smooth 192 to get home in two, Huber finally sacked up and hit an excellent hybrid/wood something or other and found the green about 30 feet above the pin. Kappes' approach went just over the back of the green setting up his stellar pitch to 6 feet with an opportunity for a 5 net 4. Huber let his purse get in the way of his first putt, leaving his eagle attempt about 4 feet shy of the cup. Once Kappes narrowly missed, Huber sank his second birdie of the Horse Race to take the crown! Your 2018 Masters Horseman is Craig Huber!!! Congrats to all the Horserace participants and special thanks to Brian in the Pro Shop for enduring the weather and stellar play. Jeff Kappes, MGA
