Many of you also know that I am a Geek. It s true. The name of my bowling team is Geeks with Balls. An average conversation with friends can not go by without uttering words such as terabyte, micro processor or at least gadget. A typical evening out does not go by without the iphone coming out to verify some fact or another on the internet. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that I recently spent the coolest afternoon imaginable combining two things I love: golf and technology. At this year s annual EWGA conference I saw a demonstration of a swing analysis technology from TaylorMade that once only available to the pros is now available to the public. I figured I had to try this, and I figured with only 9 locations throughout the world I was going to have to refinance my house and plan my next vacation around getting it! Imagine the thrill when I found out that one of those 9 locations was here in the suburbs of Chicago, at Olympia Fields Country Club. I checked with our own Gwen Russell (who works at OFCC) and asked if she thought the high tech analysis was worth it for an average duffer like me. Gwen said It is well worth it for a serious golfer that wants to improve her game. April 4 th I went to the TaylorMade Performance Lab at Olympia Fields for the club fitting and swing analysis along with my husband John (you didn t think I could do this without the other household golf geek did you?). We were met by Manager and Master Club Fitter, Brad Syslo. The experience was fantastic for geeks and golfers alike. Brad placed a few reflective bands on my feet, knees, waist, wrists, arms and a stylish reflective vest and hat to top it all off. It was all very light and comfortable, and didn t interfere with my swing at all. Getting set up Then the magic began. Brad had me take a few swings with a reflector fitted 6 iron and a magic techno gizmo captured it all and turned it into a 3D image of me swinging my club. This is the same technology that is used in Hollywood for 3D animation. At TaylorMade they call it MATT (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade). MATT can capture every millisecond of your swing.

3 President Letter (continued) Page 3 MATT knows what the face angle of your club is relative to swing path at impact and so much more. In less technical terms, golfers at any skill level can finally for see themselves exactly what only their keen eyed golf pros could see up till now. As long as I ve been playing my pro has told me I swing outside in and that my club is open at impact. I finally know what that means! We left our sessions each with our own CD including a program to play all of the swings (and putts) captured for analysis. Swiiing batter batter... The CD also includes a recommendation for custom fittings for a full set of clubs. The club specs can be used to order any clubs at the store of your choosing. If you decide to order new clubs from TaylorMade they ll give you a discount as a result of your purchase of the swing analysis. Front view (from provided software) I highly recommend this for golfers of all levels. And for my fellow golf geeks well it s just about the most fun you can have outside of Interop moving to Pebble Beach. For information on the TaylorMade Performance Labs visit or call Brad Syslo at Make sure to mention that you are an EWGA member and Brad will give you a discount off the list price. Side view of the same swing, with swing path view switched on.

4 Page 4 A Heartfelt Thank You To Our EWGA Chicago Metro Sponsors In these challenging economic times, we value each other's partnership more than ever and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many companies and people who reached out to sponsor our organization during this 2009 season. For our Kick-off event last month, many of these sponsors took the time to come out and set up a table to meet and talk to our members who attended the event. We really appreciate their commitment to supporting our organization and the events we hold for our members. They want to help our members learn, play and enjoy the game of golf with the products and services they offer. Listed below are the sponsors who are supporting EWGA Chicago Metro this coming year through donations both cash and in-kind. We use these donations to provide our members with prizes throughout the season in addition to the Kick-off event where many sponsor really came up with some outstanding donations for the I want That! drawing. We honor our sponsors back by displaying signage and print media at our events whenever possible. I encourage you to support the EWGA Chicago Metro Chapter sponsors whenever the opportunity arises. You will see some of them at other events throughout the year, please take the time to thank them for their support. Please use these companies' products and services when possible to show your appreciation. Their financial commitment has provided the dollars for us to give our members more benefits for their membership. All sponsors are shown on our ewgachicago.org website with links to their own company sites. There are also Sponsor Offers and Discounts listed for EWGA Members. Take a look, there may be an opportunity to save money! PAHR Golf sponsors our chapter by giving us 20% of the retail priced purchases made by EWGA Chicago members, please use the code EWGACHI during checkout for us to be credited for your purchases. Visit their site to see the merchandise they offer. We are always looking for sponsors so if you know members, friends, or companies who would be interested in supporting our organization, please let me know. Have a great Golf Season! 6 Membership May 2009 Laurie Anderson Membership Chair Page 6 EWGA has been very busy this past month. Golfsmith & Golf Galaxy both held Women Night Out events. EWGA had representatives at most of the stores for both events. I was at the Schaumburg Golfsmith event and it was fun. Two members of the Chicago Chapter won prizes (putting contest and evening drawing) and that was pretty cool. It s always a pleasure being asked by both of these retailers to have EWGA participate. Golf Galaxy went out of their way to make sure EWGA was prominently mentioned. Don t forget, we get a discount at Golf Galaxy. If you ever have an issue, contact myself or Dena Lamb (President) & we ll do our best to get the issue corrected. June 7 th is the big MEMBER-GUEST event. I m really excited as this year it is being held at the Cranes Landing Golf Course at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort. As always, we promise lots of fun and excitement and prizes for all. It is a scramble golfing event with a 1:00 p.m modified shotgun start. The cost is $89.00 and that includes golf (with a cart) and dinner! This is the one event where Non-EWGA members are encouraged to participate. Men are also welcome to attend! If anyone is interested in spending Saturday night at the resort, please send me an (laurietaylor@yahoo.com). I m currently working with the resort about getting group pricing for rooms. The resort has a theatre and 25 th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be playing the weekend of our event. Visit the website WWW. EWGACHICAGO.ORG and click on the EVENTS tab to register now! Visit the website WWW. EWGACHICAGO.ORG and click on the EVENTS tab to register now! I received this neat little article from EWGA Headquarters that I thought I d sharing with all of you: EWGA Benefit of the Week: Special ClubCorp Offer EWGA members can be a Member for a Day at any of the ClubCorp Country Clubs or Business & Sports Clubs. EWGA members will receive a complimentary lunch or round of golf when accompanied by one paying guest. Check clubcorp.com to find a Club near you. I ve followed up with Clubcorp & there are no golf courses in Illinois. However, there are two restaurants located at downtown Chicago that reciprocate: the Metropolitan Club and the Mid-American club. If you want to take advantage of the complimentary lunch, you will need to call this phone number and they will book your restaurant reservation. If you have any difficulty; contact me at my address laurietaylor@yahoo.com.

9 Golf Etiquette Is About More Than Good Manners Page 9 The rules of golf etiquette have been established to help ensure the safety of golfers, regulate the pace of play (making the game enjoyable for everyone) and maintain the quality of the golf course. It is an essential part of the game. So the following is a refresher for all of us as we enter the 2007 season. Safety Players taking a practice swing, should not swing in another player s direction (pebbles, grass, dirt or twigs could fly up and injure your playing partner). Players should not hit their ball until the group ahead is out of range. If you hit your ball in the direction of another player and there is a danger of hitting her/him, give a warning by yelling fore! Players should follow safety suggestions posted by the golf course and drive safely. Pace of Play Be prepared to hit your shot when it s your turn to keep your round moving at a good pace. The player who is farthest away from the hole plays first. However, this rule may be ignored in friendly matches if all players agree to play ready golf prior to teeing off at the first tee. When two players in a cart hit to opposite sides of a hole, drive to the first ball and drop that player off with her club selection, then drive to the second ball. After you both have hit, meet up farther down the hole. A player walking from her cart to her ball should take an extra club, if uncertain of her distance or lie. If a player believes her ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. When playing on or near the putting green, leave your bag or cart in an area that enables you to make a quick exit towards the next tee. Always try to keep pace with the group in front of you. If space opens in front of you, invite the group behind to play through. Care of the Course Observe all cart rules. Repair your divot holes and ball marks on the green. Always rake your footprints and any damage to the sand trap after you hit your shot. Repair any golf shoe damage to the putting green upon completion of the hole by all players in your group. Additional Etiquette Tips Always show consideration for fellow players by not moving, talking or making any unnecessary noise during their play. Players should not stand directly behind the ball or directly behind the hole, when a player is about to play. On the putting green, avoid walking or standing on another player s line of putt. On or around the putting green, stand in a location that does not cast a shadow over a fellow player s line of putt. Players should remain on or close to the putting green until all other players in the group have holed out. If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they d starve to death Sam Snead
