Having a Birthday in September? If so, you are invited to our first monthly Birthday Social to be held on Tuesday September 17 th at 2:00pm. Provided will be birthday cake, iced tea and lemonade for all our members who have a birthday during the month. We have a fantastic Oktoberfest Dinner planned for September 28 th. Chef Brian has put together a wonderful German Style Dinner and you can listen to German tunes, played by D.J. T-Rex. The fun starts at 6pm, so be sure to reserve your spot. Remember, every Wednesday, tee off at 3:30 and join us for Twilight Dinner (Tavern menu available too). Play Trivia Challenge with us on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday night of each month. Friday A La Carte Dinner offers a variety of entrees, prepared by our talented Culinary Team, and is complimented with our Miles Grant wine list. Music can be enjoyed in the Tavern from 6-9 on Fridays. We have $ 1.00 off Happy Hour on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00pm 6:00pm. We have also adjusted all of our drink prices, so your favorite libations will be a great value at all times. Please excuse the dust while we work to repair and enhance our clubhouse during the summer months. We will be repairing and painting heavy traffic areas of the Clubhouse as well as reconfiguring some areas for improved workability and aesthetics. In closing I d like to mention that Chuck Hamilton, who was our first recipient of the Miles Grant Education Scholarship, has started his classes at IRSC and is very thankful for the support from the program. 3 Member Activities TAI CHI at Miles Grant Richard Tinker This year we are offering two 45-minute classes. The Yang Style class we have had for four years, and a new Sun Style class. The Sun Style class is really directed at beginners who want to experience Tai Chi and receive its health benefits, such as balance, concentration, and muscle control. It is easier to learn than the Yang Style and less complicated to practice, The Yang Style is directed at more experienced Tai Chi students and those wishing to get greater benefits through the learning and application of discipline. Its health benefits are much the same as those of the Sun Style, but it employs greater movement of the large muscles of the body, thus enhancing the aerobic effects of Tai Chi. 5 Food and Beverage From Chef Brian Burger I think it has been a great summer at Miles Grant Country Club. It seems to have gotten even hotter and its not raining that much right now, but that will all change soon enough. We all appreciate your support and attendance at our dinners and events. The end of summer is just around the corner, but we have some great dinners and events for September. The month of September we have Twilight Dinner every Wednesday night with Trivia on the first and third of each month. Trivia is a popular night to come for dinner and some friendly competition with your friends and neighbors. Every Friday is our Ala Carte Dinner in the Dining Room and with music and food in the Tavern. Every Sunday we have the Miles Grant Breakfast Buffet starting at 10:00. Saturday September 28 th is our Oktoberfest Dinner Dance. This is a great time to eat some German food, drink beer and dance to German music. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to stop by and see me at the clubhouse, call me at ext 106 or me at brian@milesgrant.net Reservation Policy Please remember to make reservations for dinners and events. Reservations help with planning, staffing and ordering food. Please remember these long standing rules for the Club as they apply to everyone: A ten dollar per person cancellation fee will be charged if a person cancels with less than 24 hours notice. If a person fails to cancel or attend, they will be charged the full amount of the dinner. No guarantees can be made for a specific table, but every effort will be made to accommodate special requests. Those without reservations will be seated on a first-come, first-serve basis. A non-member may be a guest of any member no more than twice in a month ALWAYS add your signature to your bill when you use any club facility. Failure to comply with the Club Rules & Regulations hurts everyone. We appreciate your assistance regarding this important matter Cooking Tips PLANNING A PARTY? 7 Golf News from the Pro Shop September already? Where did our fun summer go! Don t despair though, there are two months left in the summer program and we have Annual and Seasonal Memberships available for the winter. Stop in the pro shop or office for Membership information. Miles Grant has so much to offer, we hope you ll consider maintaining your affiliation with us!! We would love to have you!! Welcome back to our returning Annual Members! Stop by the pro shop and we will get you signed up for golf. Activity calendars are available in the Office. Notes from the Golf Course WOW! Things are popping at Miles Grant! August has been busy, busy, busy! The Chipco Choice and Curfew have been applied and the results are dramatic! Grass is lusher, a deep green and insect free at the moment. We have fertilized, had enough rain, and all the slits from the applications are completely healed. Mr. Foy, from the USGA, had to cancel his visit as his father had a stroke. His visit will be re-scheduled, but as of this date (8/15), we don t know when. We ve had some setbacks but, if every thing ran smoothly, it would take all the fun out of it, right Paul? Lightning took out one of the control boxes for 1 of our 2 pumps and a pump motor burned out. They MUST be fixed because running on one pump would be courting disaster! A couple of sturdy machines broke down and their repair costs were more than expected. Hopefully we ll recoup next month. by Susan McAllister We invite you to join us for our Labor Day Scramble & BBQ Saturday, August 31 st 8:30 Shotgun. The golf course will be OPEN Monday- Sept. 2 nd Labor Day 7:30-5pm.. The golf course opens Mondays for winter starting Sept. 23 Miles Grant s version of the Ryder Cup will be a scramble format this year. Oh, to have about 100 of them as Annual Members! Word is spreading that we do Birthday Parties, Church groups, Service Clubs and other group outings. Can Pony rides be far behind? Way to go Susan! Ellyn and I spent a delightful 2 week respite here around the first of August. Between Doctor visits we went to the Elliott Museum and recommend it highly to all Members and their guests. We played Trivia at the Club and had a wonderful going away dinner of Maryland Crab Soup and Broiled Scallops! Perfect! Under the heading of you can t win, when I arrived last October I was told the course was in perfect shape except it needed sand. When I arrived a couple of weeks ago, I was told that the course was perfect but the sand was too deep! 8 Golf Golf Course Maintenance The summer cultural practices have been moving along quite nicely and are now coming to a close. I m sure everyone will be happy to hear that the last core aeration of the greens will be on September 9 th. The last core aeration of the fairways, approaches and green slopes will be on September 16 th. All the work involved in the summer programs is paying off in the form of stronger, healthier turf grass throughout the golf course. We were able to treat more acreage this summer for pests such as mole crickets and nematodes than we have for several years past. We have also added 250 tons of new bunker sand to the greenside bunkers. The rainfall through most of the summer has been adequate to help keep us green and it helps flush the salt through the soil profile. The application of some gypsum and calcium with our fertilizer blends together with the rainfall has also helped to correct our soil PH. This helps greatly with nutrient availability. Our main challenges with the rainfall when it is heavy are to keep the weeds sprayed out and keeping up with much more frequent mowing. All together we have had a great summer working on the golf course. Thank you for your support and we hope you continue to enjoy playing MGCC golf course. Blue jeans, although quite fashionable, unfortunately, are not permitted in the clubhouse, golf course, Samuel Miles Tavern or dining room.
