Volume 2 April 2016 Nomad News Upcoming Games and Events Next Game HARTFIELD Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia Fr Editorial by Fred Meijer A point was raised by Captain Vaughan in last month s Captain s Corner about the aging Nomads membership at the South African Nationals. This made me look at our scenario in Perth with interesting results. Based on our current membership of 64, the average age of our members is years. At the top of the ladder is Gus Augustus at 83 and our youngest member is Matt Burt at 31. I wholeheartedly agree with Vaughan that we should be looking into a possible feeder system or mechanism to make a serious attempt at lowering the average age of our membership. Our proposed involvement with the Junior Golf Development Programme may result in us attracting a few players who may want to support Perth Nomads in our efforts to grow the Club. In addition, you as Perth Nomad members, also have a role to play by promoting the Club to both acquaintances, business connections, friends and family to join the Nomads family and what we stand for. In our efforts in getting involved with the WA Junior Golf Development Programme, we are in the process of arranging a number of Sausage Sizzles at various Masters and Bunnings Warehouse locations from Port Kennedy, Baldivis, Rockingham and Joondalup. The first of these will take place at Masters in Baldivis on Sunday, June 19 th and we hope that many of you will put your hands up to assist on the day. We are planning to display Nomads banners and have Nomads information pamphlets on hand. In addition, we will be calling on a few businesses to assist with either the donation or reduced prices on sausages, boerewors, condiments and drinks which will assist us in lowering the costs and to increase our profits. If any of you would be in a position to point us in the right direction or be able to donate towards this cause, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. * Upcoming Events Sausage Sizzle- Masters-Baldivis No man is an island entire of itself. Each man is a piece of the continent, a part of the Maine. Any man s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. Therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee. Until Next Month Happy Golfing
Captain s Corner 2016 NOMADS AUSTRALIA NATIONALS LAUNCH As your Nationals Coordinator for Perth, I am pleased to advise the Expressions of Interest for the 2016 Nationals have been opened. You would, by now, have received an Invitation to submit your expression of interest to attend our flagship annual event to be held at a brilliant venue, Hope Island Resort, Gold Coast, over the weekend, Friday 28 th October to, and including Sunday 30 th October Contacts Captain Vaughan Nothnagel Vice-Captain Ken Lloyd Junior Vice-Captain Hector West Secretary Robert Younghusband Treasurer Alastair Beattie Public Relations Officer / Sponsorship Officer / Editor Nomad News Fred Meijer Handicapper / Venue Coordinator/Match Secretary Neville Walker Membership Officer B Anderson Equipment Officer Garth Ellis Prize Officer Kevin Von Weichardt In the interest of tracking all submissions, may I please ask you to advise me once you have filled out and submitted your interest. It is pertinent to advise that Perth Nomads have been allocated 20 spots (maximum) for the event so it would be wise to get your submissions in early. Also, once you have submitted your Expression of Interest, please advise me directly in order for me to carry out my coordination role on your behalf. In the event of us not being able to fill our allocated 20 positions by 15 May 2016, the places not filled will be allocated to the Clubs that have over-subscribed to the event. The Charity Day is fast approaching and we are looking for sponsors in earnest. Should you or the organisation you work for or with are in a position to assist in this regard, please contact Ken Lloyd as our Charity Day co-ordinator. A reminder that the date for the event is 16 October (a Sunday) and we urge all Nomads to try and arrange a 4- ball for the day. It is an Ambrose event so it is not important to have brilliant golfers, just an opportunity to have fun and raise some money for charity. There is a new portfolio at the Natex level that we are proud to say contributed somewhat in the setup, that is the portfolio for Furtherment of Golf. The post is to be filled by Dave Twycross over east and will see Nomads as a whole focussing on golf development and growth in Australia. Good luck Dave and we look forward to putting the Perth Nomads initiatives in the limelight as first cab s off the rank. For the monthly Nomads Rounds, we have decided to tap people on the shoulder to assist us on the day by performing the fines session. This is a fun event that co-incidentally raises a few dollars that we will either use for the furtherment of the club or donate to charity. If tapped, please help us by having a think about some novel fines that you may be able to apply. Gents we would like to keep this above board too so please no political, religious or derogatory fines that may embarrass our members. That s All Folks, see you on the 1 st May at Hartfield..

. RULES CORNER by Neville Walker SAND Sand is normally everywhere on the golf course, but is most commonly found in the bunkers. Try this quiz courtesy of Barry Rhodes You can follow his blog on the Rules of Golf at Q1: Sand that spills over the margin of a bunker forms part of that bunker. True or False? Q2: Sand on a player s line of play may be removed from the putting green, but not from anywhere else on the course. True or False? Q3: In frustration, a player swings their club through the sand in a bunker after a stroke that only moved their ball onto the grass bank immediately in front of the bunker. If their ball subsequently rolls back into the bunker they incur a penalty of two strokes in a stroke play competition. True or False? Q4: When making a stroke from a bunker a player may kick loose sand down from the side, so as to raise the level of their left foot to the same as that of their right. True or False? Q5: On a short par 3, while waiting for the green to clear, a player uses sand to fill divots on the teeing ground. If they then take their stance on the area that they have just repaired, they incur a penalty of two strokes. True or False? Q6: A player may, without penalty, touch or move sand from anywhere on the course to find and identify their ball that they believe may be covered by the sand. True or False? A1: False - Decision 13/1. A2: True - Definition of Loose Impediments. A3: False. - Decision 13-4/35.5. The club was not touching the sand when the ball re-entered the bunker. A4: False - Decision 13-3/3. This action would constitute building a stance. A5: False - Rule A player may create or eliminate \ irregularities on the teeing ground of the hole being played. A6: True - Rule 12-1a.
Handicapper s Rantings By Neville Walker Draw Sheet and Special Requests 1. Each month there is a random draw of the members, prospective members, and guests who are registered. The names are drawn using a lottery cage similarly to that used in the Meat Raffle. 2. The only time you will get to play with someone in your special request is when that someone is your guest or your partner in the Knock-Out. Asking to play with someone outside of this will not be accommodated. 3. In the case of Prospective Members they are drawn with a member of the Committee whenever this is possible as this forms part of the new member ratification process. 4. The 12 venues for the monthly games each year are loosely based on securing 4 games south of the river, 4 games north of the river, and 4 games more centrally located. There is another proviso that summer games are played near the coast. 5. From the list of courses submitted a number are not available for several reasons. Our field is too big for a Sunday morning, the club doesn t take outside groups and so on. 6. While it would be ideal to award late tee times for those in the south playing games in the north and vice versa this is not always possible. The draw then becomes contrived and departs from the Nomads philosophy that everyone must be prepared to play with anyone wherever they are placed in the field. 7. I realise that there is some car-pooling and I try to position these players within 2 or 3 tee times when the game is a considerable travelling distance away. 8. You may request and early or late start, but such a request is difficult to accommodate. You can ask, but there is no guarantee that your request will be met. 9. If you register late your position in the field is how you find it. I am always willing to listen to suggestions, but bear in mind that as we are playing mostly on private courses on a weekend morning, we have very little bargaining power.
Ellie Honeybone - Sound Telegraph on March 30, 2016, 11:00 am INTO THE LOOKING GLASS Handover of Tip Truck to Volunteer Task Force co-funded by Nomads Golf Club Perth More photos on VTF adviser Andy Harold, Nomads Golf Club Captain, Vaughan Nothnagel and Les Harry of Carramar Coastal Nurseries with the brand new tip truck. Picture: Ellie Honeybone Volunteer Task Force celebrated the launch of its new Water Wise tipper truck on Friday. The customised 7.5 tonne Isuzu vehicle was co-funded by Nomads Golf Club - Perth and will be a major asset for the ongoing success of the VTF Water Wise program. Established in 2012 and based in Shoalwater, the VTF Water Wise project has completed more than 270 remodels, spreading more than 10,000 square metres of mulch and planting over 1466 plants throughout the Perth Metro area. VTF gardening and special projects adviser Andy Harold pioneered the program and said the garden remodels were based on sustainable gardening principles. We consultant with our clients and industry experts to reduce the amount of water used in our gardens and aim to create a natural attractive outdoor area, he said. Previously we hired a truck that wasn t really suited for this work but the new truck will allow us to separate loads and also store the plants to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition. VTF s Water Wise Project has achieved accreditation by Water Corporation and the Landscape Industries Association of WA. The new truck arrives in time for the Water Wise season that runs during the winter months between April and September. Water wise gardens are easy to maintain and look amazing, Mr Harold said. They help save money and eliminate the need for regular maintenance while attracting an abundance of birds and native wildlife. Many of our clients have had neighbours knock on the door or spark up impromptu conversations and this encourages people to head outside and enjoy the space more often.
