2 FOOD Trends Last month I did a really interesting food safari in Cork, there are so many new places opening up with unique and interesting foods, but it s also great to visit some old favourites like the English Market. I was really hoping to get back to Ichigo Ichie but didn t manage to get a reservation, next time! This month i m looking at the mega trend of sustainability, the Mediterranean diet and will our hangovers be a thing of the past? Have a great month! Dr. Deirdre Moriarty Musgrave MarketPlace Trends Expert Sustainability key focus for foodservice operators Sustainability continues to be one of the key trends for 2019 in both retail and foodservice. Consumers are more focused than ever on sustainability and this is having a knock on effect to how many products are being sourced, produced, packaged and disposed of (check out Walkers new recycling programme for a good example of this!). We are also seeing increased focus by nation states on legislation to manage sustainability, a recent example of this is Bali s ban on single use plastics. Some foodservice operators are reviewing their menus and choosing to no longer serve non indigenous, on trend ingredients such as avocado because of the environmental impacts of shipping these products. We are also seeing a change in alcohol production with Budwiser in the UK now being brewed with 100% renewable electricity. Lots going on in this space, I will keep you posted over the coming months. Mediterranean diet voted best for 2019 If you re still trying to get your health and nutrition on track why not give the Mediterranean diet a go? It s been voted the best diet of 2019 by US News and World report. 41 eating plans were considered and the Mediterranean diet was found to be the easiest to follow and the best for plant-based diets. Will our hangovers be a thing of the past? Carlsberg UK have done a piece of research looking at the drinking habits of 2,000 people. 59% of respondents had tried a low or no alcohol beer with 52% agreeing that it was now more socially acceptable to drink a low or no alcohol drink when socialising. With a growing number of consumers being more conscious of what and how much they drink I m sure that we will see lots more low and no alcohol products hitting the market this year.
